SEASON OUTLOOK ead coach Kim Staehle and the Colonials are ready to kick off the 2010 season. A two-year process creating this season’s schedule, Staehle, in her fourth season at the helm of the Colonials, has set up a tough test early for her program. “We are excited to start this spring,” Staehle said. “We are anxious to test our freshmen and returnees with some great competition early on.” GW faces teams from the Big Ten, ACC, Big East and the Patriot League in early non-conference play. The Colonials begin their season at the UVa Cavalier Classic, facing first-time opponents Notre Dame and Ohio, along with Lehigh and tournament host, Virginia. The Buff and Blue travel to the state of Florida to take on Florida The 2010 Colonials roster consists of three seniors, two juniors, seven sophomores International and Michigan State. and seven freshmen. “We know we need to play well early in the spring against these schools,” Staehle said. “If Penna picked up where Clauss left off, getting valuable we work hard and stay healthy, we welcome to the opporexperience in and out of conference play. She tossed 59.2 tunity to get back to the Atlantic 10 Conference innings in 15 appearances, with a 5-4 win over Mount St. Tournament in May.” Mary’s on May 31. “Heidi did a great job stepping up for us and has made tremendous improvements this fall,” Staehle said. PITCHERS Both Clauss and Penna will compete for the number GW has five hurlers to begin the season, with senior two spot in the pitching rotation. standout Amanda Gabriel as the ace of the staff. Nescio brings experionce again with her preparation for her final season and ence from playing with a strong high school, Spalding look forward to see how she prepares for the postseason.” High, and her traveling team, the Severna Park Hornets. Sophomores Kara Clauss and Heidi Penna should continue to have a big impact in the circle for GW this season. Clauss started strong in 2009, earning two extraCATCHERS inning wins in the South Florida Under Armor Showcase. Jillian Stanley was named the starter in her first season After injuring her shoulder mid-season, Clauss found playas a Colonial. She is the leader “Kara has returned in amazing shape and we look to of a young group behind the plate with freshmen keep her healthy. She has a great pitcher’s mindset and Tara Fogarty, from East Northport, NY; Sandi Moynihan, can match up with anyone, as she showed last spring with from Sugar Land, TX; and walk-on Kristi Saporito from wins over South Florida and LIU Brooklyn,” Staehle said. SEASON OUTLOOK push Stanley for playing time. “Our hopes are to develop each of them to share in the backstop duties and push each other to improve each day,” Staehle said. Fifth-year senior, Elisa Van Kirk will move to the designated player spot and see limited time at third base as she continues to deal with shoulder and knee injuries.
INFIELD Junior co-captain Katie Terrazas will anchor the infield for the Colonials this season, moving from third base to shortstop. Terrazas wields a potent bat along with her solid glove on the left side of the infield. She led GW with a .260 batting average and slugged for .418 with 12 hits for extra bases including five home runs last season. “Defensively and offensively, Katie is our most consistent performer,” Staehle said. “She prepares herself for each game and is a true team player as she returns to shortstop for us again this season.” A nucleus of sophomores and freshmen will round out the infield with some much-needed depth. Sophomore Jordyn O’Donnell, an Irving, TX native, will play second base and perhaps see additional time at first-base, after logging time at nearly every position last season. Freshman walk-on Julie Orlandi, from Owings, MD, should see significant playing time on the infield. “Julie led off for us this fall and is a great spark-plug,” Staehle said. Gabriel and Clauss will play first base when not in the circle, while Moynihan will push the returners for playing
time. She brings a potent bat and is a vocal teammate. Nescio has worked some at second base this fall and could see action when not in the circle.
OUTFIELD Senior co-captain Amanda Holst will once again direct the outfield for GW from centerfield. Holst led the Colonials in drawing 16 walks from opposing pitchers. “Amanda is ready for an exciting senior campaign and we are excited for her progress offensively,” Staehle said. “Once again her outstanding work ethic is a great example for our young outfield.” There will be competition for the corner spots in the outfield. Gabriel and Clauss could see time in left field when not in the circle as well as sophomore Lauren Wilson, who saw action in 46 games and smacked a team-leading eight doubles. Jamie Yaniga played in 31 games, and Ali Waterman, who saw playing time in 30 games and hit a big home run against UMass, also will compete for time. Freshman Autumn Taylor, a Severna Park, MD, native, has a potent bat and will certainly push for a starting role. “Autumn has tremendous strength and speed and we are excited to see her in action this spring,” Staehle said. Walk-on sophomore, Amanda Zakeri, from Toledo, OH, is a speedy addition to our roster and will certainly assist in pinch running and may see action in the outfield.

xplore the possibility of your future at The George Washington University. GW is a landmark institution of higher learning and academic research in the world-class city of Washington, DC. At GW, we create a unique, fun and competitive atmosphere for talented students from across the globe by blending the intimate energy of our campus and classrooms with all the excitement of a national and international city — Washington, DC. Washington is perhaps the most livable urban area in the country. With 44 colleges and universities and almost 400,000 students, student life is a major aspect of the capital scene. GW’s two campuses are perfectly situated allowing students to make the most of this dynamic, eclectic city. Our Foggy Bottom neighborhood campus has definition (the 18 city blocks, bricked courtyards and memorial parks become apparent after a short pass through campus) and our Mount Vernon campus offers a more traditional, green suburban setting complete with athletic fields and outdoor recreational facilities. The University prides itself on the seamless fit between both campuses and the city. GW offers the proximity of all that is best about DC: from the White House to the shores of the Potomac; Rock Creek Park to the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts; and from the Foxhall embassies to the Washington National Cathedral.
GW is Washington; Washington is GW Many of those picture-postcard views mentioned earlier are visible from campus (local ordinances forbid any building higher than 12 stories — the height of the Capitol Building dome) and what you’ll begin to notice about them is how they change, depending upon the season of the year. The always-visible Washington Monument is transformed from a tourist destination into a friendly presence; the White House becomes a neighborhood landmark and orientation point; the Potomac River, a place for strolling, sailing, bike riding and sunbathing. Under the tutelage of the Community Living & Learning Center, more than half of the entire undergraduate student body lives in the University’s 31 residence halls, 25 situated in Foggy Bottom and six on the Mount Vernon campus. GW residence halls offer close-knit communities that share the challenges and fun of college life. In recent years, our Residence Hall Association has been named the “School of the Year” by the National Association of College and University Residence Halls for the group’s commitment to the involve-

ment of on-campus students in extra-curricular activities. GW also offers 26 Living and Learning Communities. Special interest floors are available for students interested in the performing arts, foreign languages, world cultures, healthy living, politics and business leadership, among others. Most residential halls offer high-speed data, voice and cable TV connectivity. GW’s Lerner Health & Wellness Center has all the benefits of a large fitness center including free weights, wellness and cardiovascular fitness areas, a suspended indoor track, squash and racquetball courts, and an indoor 25-yard lap pool. The center is a popular destination among the GW community and enhances the quality of student life supporting students’ interests in intramural sports, club sports, and other recreational and wellness activities. Categorized as a one-of-a-kind opportunity that is so typically GW, the School of Media and Public Affairs state-of-the-art broadcasting facilities is a popular venue for prominent journalists to meet and work with students. GW’s own “J Street” offers a selection of special eateries on the first floor of the Marvin Center and recently underwent a multi-million dollar renovation. Colonial Cash, the declining balance flexible spending program, is used to purchase food on- and off-campus. Colonial Cash is administered through GWorld identification cards and also can be used to do laundry in the residence halls, purchase items from the GW bookstore and serves as an access card for campus buildings. GW students constantly benefit from the latest, state-of-the-art facilities covering the campus. Completed and current projects include a new hospital, the Elliott School of International Affairs classroom and residential complex, the School of Business, and the spectacular 400-room Ivory Tower residence hall, which opened in fall 2005. The Student Activities Center, based in the Marvin Center, offers programming to educate and excite students throughout the year, sponsoring events and concerts featuring headlining celebrities, comedians and musicians and a variety of programs including Midnight Breakfast, Welcome Week, Spring Fling and Greek Week. ACADEMIC SUPPORT
The GW Academic Support Staff (L-R): Maya Glover, Ellen Carter Woodbridge, Karen Ercole, Carla Tamagni, Danya Ellman.
The GW Department of Athletics employs five fulltime academic support staff members and 30-40 tutors to help 400-plus student-athletes. Because of the unique challenges created by the transition to both college academic and athletic competition, the academic coordinators — along with student-athlete peers —
offer an orientation for freshmen to discuss issues such as time management, campus resources, study strategies and adjustment to the college experience. In 2007, the GW Softball team won the GW Women’s Team Academic Excellence Award earning a team GPA of 3.45, highest among GW’s varsity women’s teams.
