GW Gymnastics 2010 We are 12 individuals with the power to captivate. Our trust in each other ensures our success. With purpose and consistency we prove our excellence; with conviction we will establish our presence. It is our strength, our heart and our attitude that will demand attention. We are one entity.
WELCOME TO GW GYMNASTICS
“A team is a small number of people with complementary skills who committed to a common purpose, set of performance goals, and approach, for they hold themselves mutually accountable.” “Our goals can only be reached through a vehicle of plan, in which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to success.” - Stephen A. Brennan
“Truly great people in any field devote many hours to deliberate practice. Deliberate practice is an activity that goes beyond repetition. It is consistent practice where the goal is to continually improve performance, reaching beyond your current capabilities, and seeking feedback on results.” - Dr. Rob Gilbert
“When you’ve got something to prove there is no greater opportunity than in the face of a challenge. And there is no greater challenge than having someone you care about relying upon you: but no greater satisfaction than to indicate their expectation.”
“On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone else around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch, because we know when we add up all those inches, that’s gonna make the difference between winning and losing, between living and dying. I’ll tell you this, in any fight, it’s the guy who is willing to die. That’s gonna win that inch!” www.GWsports.com

SEASON OUTLOOK Colonials see promise in new year The George Washington Women’s Gymnastics team ended 2009 with a lot of uncertainty, but the upcoming season features a quintet of freshmen, full of potential, along with the seven returning performers, and head coach Margie Foster-Cunningham sees 2010 as a year filled with considerable promise for the Colonials. “We had a lot of rotation last season, with a lot of girls filling a variety of roles,” Foster-Cunningham said. “This season we should have a tremendous amount of stability with four to five girls in the all-around, and others filling defined roles to balance our team. It always is and will be our goal to qualify for NCAA Regional competition as a team, and I feel we have a young and talented group getting ready for the 2010 season.” Gone are the leadership and stellar performances of Gillian Coleman, Kristen Simpson, Erin Quigg and Bree Plotsker, but many returning Colonials are looking to step into expanded leadership roles. Senior Lindsay Tom returns this season from ankle surgery to team up with senior Megan Quinn as team captains for the upcoming 2010 campaign. They will join 2009 standouts Amanda Murphy and Leslie Delima, both of whom qualified for NCAA Regional competition last season. Senior Danielle Parretti and sophomore Brittany Burnham complete the returning squad, bolstered by five incoming freshmen. Redshirt freshman Monique Blount, who sat out last

Murphy immediately made her presence felt during her first season in Washington, DC, as the freshman from The Woodlands, TX, competed in every meet and also was a NCAA Southeastern Regional individual qualifier. She had 13 routines that were scored a 9.700 or better. She will look to take on an even larger role as one of the mainstays for George Washington gymnastics in the 2010 season. Tom, Parretti and Burnham will also play key roles this season for the squad and will be counted on for contributions. Parretti is set to take on a load that includes all the events, with the exception of uneven bars, after only competing on beam twice last season. Tom will be a beam specialist after sitting out last season and will look to further boost the Colonials in that event. Burnham stepped in last season when injuries hit George Washington toward the end of the season on beam and will add an uneven bar routine for 2010. The remaining three freshmen, Allison Mitchell, Brittany Garcia and Nefertiti Roy, will push the Colonials all season as they look to reach their goal of being a team qualifier to

NCAA Regional competition. “There is a lot of great energy in practice, and everyone is very excited,” Foster-Cunningham said. “There is great chemistry with this team, and everyone is ready to step up and take the next step this season. We will look for a higher finish in the final standing when we go to New Hampshire for the EAGL Championship meet and will look to progress as a unit and work hard every day.” Those challenges will not come easily, though, for the Colonials, as the team faces a tough 2010 schedule. There are eight scheduled road meets and four home meets at the Charles E. Smith Center. The road trips are to West Virginia, NC State, Kent State, Maryland, and Pittsburgh, as well as Southeastern Conference competitor Kentucky. The Colonials also will take on the University of Pittsburgh in two meets and will host the Lindsey Ferris Invite on Sunday, Jan. 17. The home dates include a visit by NC State on Sunday, Feb. 14, William & Mary and New Hampshire on Sunday, March 7, and a “senior night” meet against Towson on Wednesday, March 17. This meet will honor the three departing seniors, Lindsay Tom, Megan Quinn and Danielle Parretti.
Senior co-captain Megan Quinn will compete in the all-around for the first time in her GW career.

The “Attitude is Everything” Award The “Attitude is Everything” award was established in 2006 to honor the memory of GW gymnast Lindsey Ferris. To a GW gymnast, attitude is everything. We realize the impact of attitude on life and know that we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. Lindsey truly believed in the power of attitude and applied these concepts to every facet of her life: academic, professional, athletic and personal. This award is presented to the gymnast who most exemplifies Lindsey’s vibrant spirit for life, sincere passion for her sport and selfless dedication to her team. In memory of one of our most determined and passionate alumni, Lindsey Ferris, we would like to present the 2010 “Attitude is Everything” award to Kristen Simpson

“I am so fortunate to have had the opportunity to continue my education at GW. The knowledge I have gained will undoubtedly prepare me for life after graduation. My experiences as a GW athlete are what have taught me my most valuable lesson — there is nothing better than the way you feel when you are doing something that you love. The combination of academic and athletics programs at GW has enlightened me in ways that will prepare me both for future success and happiness. My teammates are important to me because of the bond we share as a result of the combined passion for our sport.”

“I believe that the combination of a chemistry degree from GW and being a GW athlete for the gymnastics team is a perfect combination for a clandestine operations officer for the CIA, which is what I am thinking of pursuing in the future. My gymnastics team is like my family. I can share everything with the girls. I feel as if my family has just expanded this freshman year, as I have gained 11 new sisters. I know that they will always be there for me, just as I will always be there for them.”
“My degree and my experience as a student-athlete at GW will have a positive impact on my future success because of my education here, the experience I will have contrived and the opportunities I will be offered. I will learn a great deal about self-motivation, perseverance and attitude, and the opportunities provided to me by GW will give me the outlets to use those skills to achieve success. A team is there no matter what, and they can push you when you feel you can’t go any farther. A team also requires every member to give the entity their all. But once a team has been melded together, once it has formed its strong bond, a team is unbreakable and can achieve things impossible by individuals. I’m proud to belong to a team like that here.”

G W A N D WA S H I N G T O N , D C GW: Something Happens here The exceptional opportunities, resources and experiences of The George Washington University await you — in the classroom, on campus and in the city. As an institution of higher learning and academic research, we have the “added attributes” of offering students an academic and social life in the world-class city of Washington, DC. As a result, we attract an exciting mix of students and faculty to GW. We create and support a unique, fun and competitive atmosphere for talented students and faculty from across the globe. We are able to capitalize on the energy and excitement of a national and international city and match it to the opportunities we offer on our campus and in our classrooms. Washington, DC, is perhaps the most livable major city in the country. With more than 40 colleges and universities and nearly 400,000 students, student life is a major aspect of the nation’s capital. GW’s two DC campuses are perfectly situated to make the most of that student life scene. Our Foggy Bottom Campus has well-defined and recognizable gateways (our 18 city blocks, bricked courtyards, plazas, bronze busts of George Washington, and memorial parks) and our Mount Vernon Campus offers a green suburban oasis complete with athletics fields, an outdoor pool, tennis courts, superb outdoor intramural and recreational facilities, and low-ropes outdoor challenge course. GW prides itself on the nearly seamless fit between both cam-

A three-level building covering nearly an entire city block, Smith Center serves the University as well as the Foggy Bottom community. In addition to the main arena, the facility includes two auxiliary gymnasiums, which are used for gymnastics and baseball practice as well as basketball, volleyball, badminton, indoor soccer and many other activities.
