As Year 2 of the Mike Lonergan era is set to begin in Foggy Bottom this November, a new look George Washington men’s basketball team began to take shape inside the Charles E. Smith Center and halfway around the world this past August. Coach Lonergan and his 13-player roster spent 10 days practicing ahead of 11 days in Italy this summer seeking to form a new identity and put the 2011-12 season in the rear-view mirror. GW went 4-1 during its tour, posting a 28-point margin of victory while averaging nearly 84 points. Based on player performances, it’s conceivable that the Colonials could start four newcomers in 2012-13. Three of GW’s top four scorers during the tour will make their debut in the Buff and Blue this season – freshmen Patricio Garino (12.0 ppg in Italy) and Joe McDonald (10.0 ppg) and Villanova transfer Isaiah Armwood (10.4). Coupled with talented 6-foot-10 freshman post Kevin Larsen, who averaged 7.6 points in Italy, the Colonials are poised to chart a new path The Leaning Tower of Pisa was just one of many sites visited as GW Men’s Basketball toured Italy for 11 days in August. to success for this season and the near future. “Our newcomers have meshed well with our returners and looked solid during our five games in Italy,” said Coach Lonergan. “We needed to replace some talent we graduated and increase our talent level. I think we’ve accomplished that with these five freshmen and transfer Isaiah Armwood.” Coach Lonergan’s first incoming class at GW has reestablished what has proven to be a recipe for success for the Colonials in recent history – mining the best players from the local DC metro area, as well as international talent. All six new Colonials – Armwood, Garino, Larsen, McDonald, and freshmen Paris Maragkos and Kethan Savage – have either international or DC metro ties. The Colonials won’t solely rely on the influx of talent though as three starters and seven letterwinners return to the lineup, highlighted by leading returning scorer senior Lasan Kromah. Kromah did a little bit of everything for GW last season, finishing second on the team in scoring (11.1 ppg), rebounds (5.1 rpg), assists (2.5 apg) and blocks (0.6 bpg), while pacing the squad in steals (1.7 spg). GW enjoyed success in Italy despite playing without senior forward David Pellom, who underwent surgery on his left wrist in July. As a junior, Pellom averaged career-best numbers of 10.4 points and a team-leading 6.1 rebounds in 27 games played, mainly off the bench. His .685 field goal percentage (122-178), aided by a team-high 38 dunks, set a new GW single-season program record. If his four-to-five month rehab timetable stays on schedule, Pellom could return to action in time for the Colonials’ season-opener against Youngstown State on Nov. 10. “David came on extremely strong at the end of last season with five double-doubles in our last six games, so his missed practice time and potential missed games will have a big impact,” said Coach Lonergan. “However, once he returns to full strength, I think he’s going to make our frontcourt our team’s biggest strength.” Second-year head coach Mike Lonergan Even without Pellom, the Colonials will have a much-improved frontcourt presence with
the addition of a pair of Montrose Christian Academy products in Armwood and Larsen. Armwood is an active rebounder and defender who is expanding his offensive range. He’ll need to shoulder a larger scoring load under Coach Lonergan after averaging 2.4 points in 61 games at Villanova, but has used the year layoff to improve his offensive skill set and is ready to embrace the challenge. Larsen, a member of the Danish Youth National Team, played alongside a star-studded cast at Montrose Christian in nearby Rockville, Md. Primarily a back-to-the-basket post presence, Larsen will prove to be a load for opponents in the paint this season with his blend of sheer size, great hands, and court vision. Returning starters Dwayne Smith and John Kopriva add depth to the front line after combining for 34 starts last winter. Smith got the bulk of his starts late in his junior season as he evolved into a reliable scorer around the rim, while Kopriva was thrust into a starting role to begin his freshman season. Smith will likely be counted on for even more starts as a senior, especially if Pellom’s return is delayed. Sophomore forward Jonathan Davis and Maragkos provide additional frontcourt options for Coach Lonergan. A native of Amarousi, Greece, Maragkos played in Greece’s Youth National program and brought the typical European offensive arsenal – a variety of post moves and shooting range – to the Blue Ridge School in southern Virginia last year.
Senior guard Lasan Kromah
The Colonials will also have the luxury of depth on the perimeter where Kromah will be joined by newcomers Garino, McDonald and Savage, and returners Bryan Bynes and Nemanja Mikic. Mentored by NBA All-Star Manu Ginobili and a member of the Argentinean Youth National Team, Garino is an efficient scorer and tenacious defender who will make immediate contributions to the Colonials. McDonald, the Atlantic 10’s lone incoming PARADE All-American at Landon School in Bethesda, Md., appears set to assume the starting point guard role following the graduation of last year’s leading scorer Tony Taylor, while Bynes will serve as back-up at the point and another option on the wing. Sharp-shooting junior forward Mikic spent the offseason transforming his body as he continues to transition his role into a more complete all-around player. The sleeker Mikic, who has shed nearly 15 pounds since last season, could very well prove to be a multi-dimensional scorer for the Colonials this season. “The addition of these six talented newcomers to our seven returners really translates into one huge quality for our team that we were lacking last year, and that’s depth,” said Coach Lonergan. “We will be able to go two deep at nearly every position and I expect to consistently go 10- or 11-players deep during games this season.” Along with McDonald, Coach Lonergan can also look to another Washington Post All-Met freshman in the backcourt in Savage, an explosive athlete known for his highlight reel dunks at Episcopal High School in nearby Alexandria, Va.
Senior forward David Pellom
The competition in the new-look Atlantic 10 Conference promises to be much stiffer than in Italy with the addition of recent NCAA Final Four participants Butler and VCU to the league’s membership. However, if GW’s newcomers can adjust to the college game as quickly as they gelled with the returners to find success in Italy, the Colonials could find themselves in the thick of things at the A-10 Championship in the new Barclays Center in Brooklyn come March.
Mike Lonergan is in his second season as head coach for men’s basketball at the George Washington University. Despite a 1021 overall record in his first season in Foggy Bottom in 2011-12, Lonergan has reestablished a recruiting pipeline in the fertile DC metro area, as well as on the international scene, both of which are expected to pay big dividends for the Colonials during his tenure. Born and raised in the DC metro area, Lonergan returned to the nation’s capital in May 2011 after a successful six seasons as head coach at the University of Vermont. He enters his 20th season as a collegiate head coach in 2012-13 just 13 wins shy of 400 career victories (387-177). “The opportunity to return to my roots in the Washington, DC, area and build a program at an exceptional school like George Washington was too good to pass up. The combination of GW’s strong academics, commitment to excellence and athletics tradition make it an ideal position. I am committed to supporting and developing our student-athletes and building a program that will make GW proud,” said Lonergan. MIKE LONERGAN Head Coach | 2nd Year
Among Lonergan’s 19 years experience as a college head coach are 15 winning seasons, 13 NCAA Tournament victories including a NCAA Division III National Championship, 13 postseason appearances, 12 regular season conference titles, 12 years of 20 or more victories, 10 NCAA Tournament qualifications and six conference tournament championships. He was named the 2001 Division III National Coach of the Year and America East Coach of the Year in 2007 and 2011. Deeply committed to academic success for studentathletes, Lonergan has achieved a 100 percent graduation rate as head coach. Lonergan came to GW after six seasons as the head coach at Vermont, where he led one of the most successful mid-major programs in the nation. Under his leadership, Vermont achieved a 126-68 overall record and 69-27 conference record, both the best in the America East Conference. Vermont captured three America East regular season championships, in 2007, 2009 and 2011, and appeared in three America East Championship games, in 2006, 2007 and 2010, winning the title in 2010. He guided the Catamounts to the 2010 NCAA Tournament and twice to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), in 2007 and 2011. At Vermont, Lonergan also served as Director of the Vermont Basketball Camp, holding two sold out sessions each summer. Prior to his service at Vermont, Lonergan served from 2004-05 as assistant coach at the University of Maryland under head men’s basketball coach Gary Williams. At Maryland, he was involved in every aspect of a top Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) program including recruiting, scouting, practice and game preparation, off season workouts and community service events. He helped lead the team to a season sweep of top ranked Duke and a semifinal appearance in the 2005 NIT. From 1992-2004, Lonergan served as head coach for The Catholic University of America’s men’s basketball program and associate athletic director. At Catholic, Lonergan was the winningest coach in the program’s 100-year history, with an overall record of 251-88. He led the team to nine of the 13 NCAA Tournament appearances in the history of the program, including the first since 1964. Under his leadership, Catholic won the Division III national title in 2001 and Lonergan was named the 2001 Division III consensus National Coach of the Year. A native of Bowie, MD, Lonergan is a 1984 graduate of Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington, DC, where he was class salutatorian. He is a 1988 graduate of Catholic University, where he was a starting point guard and captain of the men’s basketball team. He also holds a Master of Science degree from American International College. Lonergan and his wife Maggie have five children: Jack, Margaret, Michael Jr., Robert (Moe) and Regina

Savage, a 6-foot-3-inch guard from Fairfax, Va., averaged 19.7 points, 5.8 rebounds and 4.2 assists as a senior to lead Episcopal High School to a 24-4 record and an appearance in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) state championship game. The 53rd-rated shooting guard prospect in the country according to ESPN, Savage was also a two-time First Team All-IAC and First Team All-VISAA honoree. Savage tallied 17.8 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game for Episcopal in 2011 on his way to Second Team All-Met honors and First Team All-Virginia recognition. The combo guard also led his squad to a 25-3 record and the 2011 Interstate Athletic Conference Championship. “Kethan is a terrific athlete who can score in many ways,” said Coach Lonergan. “He is capable of becoming a lock-down defender. He is known for his highlight reel dunks, but I think he is a great all-around player.” #11 KETHAN SAVAGE G | 6-3 | Fr. | Fairfax, VA
Garino, a 6-foot-5-inch guard/forward from Mar del Plata, Argentina, guided Montverde (Fla.) Academy to a 23-4 overall record and a No. 9 ranking in the final ESPNHS Powerade Fab 50 in 2011-12. He helped the Eagles to the championship game of the prestigious ESPN National High School Invitational, scoring 20 points and grabbing seven rebounds against Nevada’s Findlay Prep in the title contest. Garino hails from the same school that produced former GW big man Joseph Katuka and previously played for Colonials’ assistant coach Kevin Sutton at Montverde. The Argentine competed for his native country’s National Team in the 2011 U-19 World Championships, where he averaged 9.4 and 4.2 rebounds in nine games during the tournament for a team that reached the bronze medal game. Garino’s international experience was highlighted by a 21-point effort for Argentina in an 81-76 victory over Croatia. He will be looked on to play both shooting guard and small forward at GW. #13 PATRICIO GARINO G/F | 6-5 | Fr. Mar del Plata, Argentina
“Patricio is a stat-sheet stuffer,” said Coach Lonergan. “He can have a great affect on the game without scoring a lot of points. He can guard several positions and has a great feel for the game.” Larsen, a native of Copenhagen, Denmark, is a 6-foot-10-inch forward who played at Montrose Christian the past two seasons. He helped the Mustangs to a 21-3 record and No. 14 national ranking in the final 2011-12 ESPNHS Powerade Fab 50 poll, averaging 8.2 points and 7.6 rebounds as a senior. Larsen’s Montrose team reached the semifinals of the ESPN National High School Invitational last month where it was defeated by Montverde Academy and fellow GW signee Patricio Garino. Also a member of Denmark’s Under-18 National Team, Larsen participated in both the 2010 and 2011 U18 European Championship Division B tournaments. He averaged 10.6 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists in seven games at the event in 2011. “Kevin has the size and strength to be an inside presence on both ends of the court,” said Coach Lonergan. “He is a great passer and a very unselfish player. He is fundamentally sound and should have an immediate impact on our program.”
#21 KEVIN LARSEN F | 6-10 | Fr. Copenhagen, Denmark
McDonald, a 6-foot-1-inch guard from Lorton, Va., starred at the Landon School in Bethesda, Md., where he earned First Team All-Met honors from The Washington Post in both 2011 and 2012. The 43rd-rated point guard prospect in the nation according to ESPN, McDonald averaged 22.7 points, 10.9 rebounds, four assists, four steals and one block as a senior in 2012, highlighted by 49-point, 18-rebound effort against conference rival Episcopal. He was a finalist for the 2012 ESPNHS Gatorade Maryland Player of the Year award, and was a three-time First Team All-Interstate Athletic Conference (IAC) selection. “Joe is a winner,” said Coach Lonergan. “He is a fierce competitor with a high basketball IQ. Joe will have the opportunity to come in as a freshman and compete to be our starting point guard. I love his physical and mental toughness.”
#22 JOE MCDONALD G | 6-1 | Fr. | Lorton, VA
Maragkos, a 6-foot-9-inch forward from Amarousi, Greece, helped the Blue Ridge School in St. George, Va., to a 20-7 overall record and a VISAA state semifinals appearance in 2012, averaging 10.9 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.3 blocks for the Barons. Maragkos has been rated as one of the top under-18 players from Europe. Sporting a 7’0” wingspan on his 6’9” frame, he averaged 9.7 points and 4.3 rebounds for his U-18 Greece team that competed in the European championships in Poland in 2011. Having arrived stateside from Greece in September 2011, Maragkos quickly garnered significant attention from other top collegiate programs before signing with George Washington. “Paris is a skilled post player who will contribute immediately,” said Coach Lonergan. “He is a good shooter with threepoint range, but also has good post moves. He is a physical player who will help us improve our rebounding.” #33 PARIS MARAGKOS F | 6-9 | Fr. | Amarousi, Greece
