SEASON OUTLOOK

T

he Colonials had a solid fall and look to continue their success in the spring. “With the goal of finishing in the top five at every tournament we play in, we actually came very close with a 7th, 6th, two 5th, and two 2nd-place finishes,” said second-year coach Terry Shaffer. In 2008-09 the Colonials used several different lineups and many players received valuable tournament experience. Shaffer has instituted an objective point system whereby each player has the opportunity to compete in a tournament based on points earned during the week’s practice rounds. Having several experienced players competing for starting spots each week will ensure that five players will bring their “A” game to each event. The top returnees are senior co-captain Cole Turner and junior Brendan Barrack. Turner’s five-under-par 67 was the best score of the Turning Stone tournament on a course in upstate New York that has a higher difficulty rating than U.S. Open Course Bethpage Black. Turner’s 66 at the ODU Seascape Invitational tied the school record-low round score, and his 74.5 career rounds (76.3 scoring avg.) is most among the returnees. The Colonials’ next most experienced player is Barrack. He has been a workhorse for GW, leading the team in rounds played in both his freshman and sophomore seasons. He has had the lowest scoring average of any Colonial last year, averaging 74.7 in 30 rounds. As a freshman, Barrack was a six-time Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week selection — the most in the history of the league. He averaged a steady 75.5 in 11 rounds this past fall and was the runner-up at Delaware’s Scotty Duncan Memorial in October. In addition to Barrack, GW will have two other talented juniors in the mix each week as well. Max Hamm and Tyler Wendelken should compete for starting spots thoughout the spring. Hamm averaged 78.7 stokes in nine rounds in the fall with a low round of 73 at the Navy Fall Classic. Shaffer calls Hamm “the heart of the team.” Wendelken led the Colonials in the fall with a 75.4 stroke average. Team captains Turner, Barrack and Hamm finished the fall portion of the schedule with a combined 766-315 record while Wendelken posted a 182-65 head-to-head record. Senior Michael Perlmutter figures to contribute this spring. He is physically the strongest on the team. Amazingly for someone so strong and long with his shots, he can still handle a good short game. He is a valuable teammate who, over the years, has made some significant contributions to the Colonials. Fellow senior Sebastian Palomares really came into his own in the last two years. ‘SeaBass,’ as he is known to his teammates, fired a round of 67 at Louisville last

2009-10 Colonials Golf

A junior champion out of Hong Kong, Martin Liu averaged 76.9 strokes in six tournament in the Fall. year that proved he has the capability to score low. The sophomore class is led by Hong Kong’s junior champion Martin Liu and Brandon Rukin. Liu is one of the most intense players on the team. There really is no weakness in his game. He played in all six tournaments in the Fall and averaged 76.9 strokes with a low of 70 at the Navy Fall Classic. Along with Liu and Rukin among the sophomores is transfer Taylor Fuqua. Rukin has been a fiesty competitor since the first day he started with the team. His performance last year at Bear Trap Dunes proved that he can score as low as anyone on the team. Fuqua brings the right work ethic with him as a transfer from the University of Charleston. He has played seven rounds as a Colonial in the fall of 2009. In addition to all of the talent returning, GW has added a pair of talented freshmen. Manny Tulumaris and Brennan Wallman will give the Colonials a pair of talented rookies who figure to be in the mix for starting spots each week. The 2009-10 schedule has the Colonials playing in some of the top local tournaments including events at Navy and Princeton. However, it’s the ‘out-of-region’ schedule that is the most impressive. GW traveled to three events that were hosted by Missouri at the Turning Stone Intercollegiate, Seton Hall’s Lincoln Mercury Intercollegiate and will travel to Indiana’s Hoosier Classic in the spring. “Our real success will be determined by our performance in the A-10 Championship,” Shaffer said. “Having the A-10s back at the Mission Inn in Orlando should prove well for the team. We really feel we can accomplish great things in early May.”

he Colonials have a golf history that dates back to the 1920s. GW won its first intercollegiate tournament in 1938 and by the 1940s the team was one of the nation’s best. They played in the 1946 NCAA Championship, finishing 12th with Bill Brownrigg taking eighth individually. In 1947, GW sent individuals Bill Griffen and Jay Wolfe to the NCAAs. In the 1950s, the Colonials won three straight Southern Conference Championships. There are five GW golfers in the GW Athletic Hall of Fame, and two who are currently playing professionally. TAD LINDNER (1948-52) Lindner was one of GW’s most durable players as he was a regular starter on five teams. He was the Colonials second-best finisher in the 1948 Southern Conference Championship and his 75 on 4/26/50 led GW to a victory at Western Maryland. Lindner was inducted into the GW Athletic Hall of Fame in 1973.

JAY RANDOLPH (1953 & 1957-58) Randolph is tied with four others for the lowest round in school history (66) and holds the record for lowest scoring average (72.86 over 33 recorded rounds) and match play victories (amassing a 21-5-1 record). The son of longtime West Virginia Senator Jennings Randolph, Jay won the Washington Metropolitan Amateur and the Egyptian Open during his college years. In 1957, he shot 70 in a GW victory over Maryland and then fired a 66 as the Colonials came from seven shots behind to beat Furman and win their first Southern Conference Championship. Randolph has served as a play-by-play broadcaster for the Florida Marlins, St. Louis Cardinals and Dallas Cowboys. He has been a veteran sportscaster for many years, working for NBC, ESPN and the Golf Channel covering golf, college basketball, baseball and a variety of Olympic sports. Randolph was inducted into the GW Athletic Hall of Fame in 1978. PAT TALLENT (1972 & 1975-76) Tallent, a native of Langley, KY, is better known at GW for his basketball skills. Tallent led the basketball team in scoring three times and is fourth on the alltime scoring list for Colonials. On the golf course, Tallent finished second at the 1975 DC III Championship for GW and is presently one of the top amateur golfers in the country. He has been the club champion at Caves Valley and Congressional CC and has played in several USGA events, including the 2000 and 2004 U.S. Amateurs. In 2005 he was the low amateur at the U.S. Senior Open and his hole-in-one earned him a segment on ESPN’s SportsCenter. In 2007 Tallent won the Virginia Amateur Championship. He was inducted into the GW Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997.

SCOTT LUTZ (1992-96) From Malvern, PA, Lutz posted three Top-5 finishes in his first four events, including a career-low 72 to tie him for third at the 1992 Western Maryland Invitational and most importantly, a 76 that placed him fourth at the ECAC Southern Region Championship. That finish made him the first Colonial to qualify for the ECAC Championships. Named to the 1996 Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference team, Lutz graduated as the team leader in starts with 76. Lutz was inducted into the GW Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004. THOMAS BLANKVOORT (1998-2002) From The Hague, Netherlands, Blankvoort transferred to GW from Florida. He shares the school record for low round (66) and is third all time in top-5 finishes and rounds played. Blankvoort earned national recognition as a contestant on The Golf Channel’s The Big Break IV, where he advanced to the final four before being eliminated. He currently plays on the Hooters Tour and is attempting to qualify for the PGA Tour. BRIAN CARROLL (2002-06) Carroll graduated from GW in 2006 as the school record-holder in Top-5 finishes with 16, including 10 seconds and two firsts. He’s second in rounds started with 118, third in scoring average with 74.8. He holds school records for 36- and 54-hole totals. He’s a two-time Academic All-American and three-time Academic All-Conference. Carroll played in the 2004 and 2005 U.S. Amateurs. He advanced to match play in 2005. He played in the 2005 and 2006 U.S. Amateur Public Links, advancing to match play in 2006. In 2005, Carroll finished second in the stroke play portion of the Western Amateur and won the Chicago District Amateur Championship. In 2006, he advanced to the quarterfinals of the North-South Amateur and (like fellow alums Lutz and Blankvoort) was honored as the University’s J. Dallas Shirley Senior Male Athlete of the Year. SCOTT ALLEN (1990-93; COACH 1995-2007) Allen won three letters in men’s golf at GW from 1990-93 and was named head coach in March, 2005. Allen led the Colonials to their first NCAA tournament appearance in 50 years when GW received and at-large berth in the NCAA Regionals in 2006. The winningest coach in the history of GW golf, his 1,270 career victories are the benchmark. Allen coached the Colonials to 13 tournament victories and 41 top-three finishes. Allen is a 1993 graduate of GW with a degree in political science, adding a master’s degree in international affairs in 2000. He is a Class A Member of the PGA of America and served as Director of Instruction for Fairfax National Golf Club and The First Tee of Washington, DC. Allen was inducted into the GW Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010.

rom the Charles E. Smith Center’s state-of-the-art weight and fitness rooms to a wide variety of golf courses, the George Washington golf team enjoys many first-class facilities.

EAST POTOMAC PARK East Potomac Park Golf Course (also known as Haines Point) is a one-of-a-kind golf facility. East Potomac opened in 1920 and the 6,600-yard “Blue Course” hosted the 1923 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, the USGA’s third-oldest Championship. Then-President Warren Harding donated the trophy for the event. Located just a few blocks from the Jefferson Memorial on a peninsula on the Potomac River, EPP offers 36 holes of golf, a three-hole practice course and a 100plus station double-deck driving range. The lower level on the range provides the Colonials one of the top yearround practice facilities in the nation. In the enclosed/heated stations, GW golfers are able to hit balls outdoors even in the coldest conditions. The top level provides some spectacular views of the National Mall and DC’s monuments. Not only does the range give GW access to a yearround practice facility, the practice course allows the Colonials to work on the scoring game, including the abil- At East Potomac Park Golf ity to hit 50-yard wedge Course, golfers can use the shots or 60-yard bunker Washington Monument to shots onto real greens. line up shots on several holes. LAUREL HILL GOLF COURSE The Colonials have been very fortunate to make use of the Bill Love-designed Laurel Hill Golf Course since it opened in October of 2005. The beautiful land on which Laurel Hill sits was ground once covered by the Lorton Federal Penitentiary. The par-71 layout can play long at more than 7,000 yards, but with five sets of tees the Colonials can tailor the length of the course to almost any course the team will face in competition. To score at Laurel Hill, a player is forced to hit all of the shots. There are two par 4s that play longer than 480 yards. However, there are also three reachable par 5s and a risk-reward par 4 that some of the longer-hitting Colonials attempt to reach off the tee. The course and especially the greens are in immaculate shape all year long, giving GW a terrific practice facility for the entire golf season.

In addition to these courses GW is fortunate to have access to several other local facilities. In recent years, GW has held practices at Bethesda Country Club, Columbia Country Club, Chevy Chase Country Club, Evergreen Country Club, Reston National Golf Course, the Naval Academy Golf Course, Washington Golf and Country Club and Woodmont Country Club.

No. 10 at Laurel Hill Golf Clut in suburban Lorton, VA. SMITH CENTER Charles E. Smith Center has served as the Department of Athletics and Recreation’s home since 1975. A three-level building covering nearly an entire city block, Smith Center serves the University as well as the neighboring Foggy Bottom community. Due to the recent magnanimous gift by the Robert H. Smith and Charles E. Smith Family Foundations and the Robert P. and Arlene R. Kogod families, Charles E. Smith Center will undergo a transformational renovation over the three years. The interior upgrades feature an academic center for student-athletes, improved general admission and club seating in the basketball arena, new locker rooms, remodeled office space to centralize athletic operations including those currently located elsewhere on campus, enhanced athletic training and weight room facilities, and a renovated natatorium. The exterior concepts include a dynamic new main entrance along 22nd Street, which will present a revitalized box office and concession concourse, and a new VIP entrance along F Street. The project is consistent with the 2007 Foggy Bottom Campus Plan and reinforces 22nd Street as the core of the campus. The first two phases of the renovation project are complete with phase III expected to be finished by 2011, during which time the building will remain open without interruption of planned events. In addition to the main arena, the facility includes two auxiliary gymnasiums, which are used for gymnastics and baseball practice as well as basketball and volleyball. The facility includes an eight-lane, 25-yard pool, which is also the home of the Colonials swimming and water polo teams.
