EXHIBITION TOUR OF
ITALY
In March 2009, the Colonials women’s soccer team took advantage of the opportunity to travel to Northern Italy to compete against some of the country’s top amateur soccer teams. The Colonials faced CFC Como, CMC Dinamo Ravenna and Bardolino, a top professional team and Serie A Champion. The team raised $72,000 for the trip by conducting camps, clinics and tournaments. They also sold t-shirts and raffle tickets to help fund the trip. "The experience was amazing,” said coach Tanya Vogel. “Our team is a family. To have the opportunity to travel together overseas, to experience the culture and history of another country, and to play against fantastic international players, is something each and every one of us will treasure for the rest of our lives.” The Colonials mixed in some time for sight-seeing, visiting the Northern Italian cities of Florence, Siena, San Marino, Venice, Lake Como and Milan. “I had a similar experience when I was a GW student-athlete and the stories from that trip are still shared at reunions across the country,” Vogel added. “I am extremely happy that the 2008-09 team was able to share this experience with one another.” Photos courtesy of Karen Ercole, Academic Coordinator
G W S O C C E R I N WA S H I N G T O N D C WASHINGTON, DC — THE U.S. SOCCER CAPITAL The soccer atmosphere in Washington, DC is electric and the fans are as passionate as any in the country. Whether watching the U.S. National Team qualify for the World Cup, DC United winning a Major League Soccer championship, or a college team vying for a league championship, Washington, DC has first-rate action for everyone. RFK Stadium, located a short Metro ride from campus, hosted eight matches of the 2003 Women’s World Cup, including the United States’ 3-1 win versus Sweden in its opening-round contest. In 1999, nearby FedEx Field played host to six 1999 Women’s World Cup matches. RFK also hosted six World Cup matches in 1994 and nine Olympic matches in 1996, each filling the venue to its capacity of 56,000. Both the men’s and women’s national teams like to call Washington, DC home. The city hosted the men’s U.S. Cup three times (1993, 1995 and 1996) with the U.S. winning all but one match. The women’s team competed in the 1995 U.S. Cup at RFK Stadium. Both teams play “friendlies” against other nations, as well as World Cup qualifying matches, in the nation’s capital. Washington also has been the home to professional soccer teams for more than two decades. Today, four-time Major League Soccer (MLS) champion DC United calls RFK Stadium home. Over the last three years, the U.S. Men’s National Team, DC United and the Washington Freedom of the WPS (Women’s Professional Soccer) have all trained at GW’s impressive home field. On the collegiate level, GW is one of six nationally recognized NCAA Division I teams in the area. The Mid-Atlantic region, in which GW competes, is considered one of the nation’s premier college soccer regions. Participation in youth soccer in Washington makes DC one of the strongest soccer markets in the country. According to research conducted by the Soccer Industry Council of America in 1997, the Washington/Baltimore area ranked third in the U.S. in average soccer participation, with more than 636,000 players.
just 2-5 at Mount Vernon in 2005, registering shutouts in both wins, but losing four of the five matches by one goal. 2006 saw the Buff and Blue win six of their nine matches at home. In the 2007 season, the Colonials improved to 5-3 on its home field, while last season GW matched the previous season with five wins but tallied another loss to go 5-4 in 2008. GW women’s soccer is 37-23-4 in eight seasons at the Mount Vernon Field.

2009 SEASON PREVIEW The George Washington women’s soccer team comes into the 2009 season on a mission to return to a place of prominence in the Atlantic 10 Conference. With five starters among 17 returning letterwinners and one of the Mid-Atlantic region’s top recruiting classes, the 2009 Colonials have the lineup to accomplish their goal. The experience and maturity of 12 upperclassmen combined with incoming freshmen who have competed for, and won, USYSA Regional and National Championships will help bolster this year’s team. “After graduating one of the best senior classes, we have a strong group of returnees,” said head coach Tanya Vogel, who enters her 10th season at GW. “The work that our 18 returnees put into our spring season, including our trip to Italy, will pay off this fall as we take on a strong non-conference schedule in preparation for conference play.”
FOR WARDS Despite graduating starting forwards Keara Mehlert and Meg Pyle, the Colonials return a great quartet of proven goal scorers in senior Dara Rosen, junior Cynthia Gamboa and sophomores Brittany Schornstein and Taryn Dietrich. All four forwards scored goals for the Colonials in ’08, but Rosen, with her smart positioning on the field and Gamboa’s quickness with the ball, both need to help lead the Colonials in scoring as Schornstein and Dietrich gain even more experience at the college level. Additionally, freshmen Adriana Moya (Chile) and Sofia Caceres (Paraguay) each have international experience with their youth national teams and bring an added flare to the front line. Kayley Sullivan, from nearby Alexandria, VA, will be a force off the bench with her blend of speed, size and finishing.
redshirt freshmen Janine Rotsides and preseason Atlantic 10 All-Rookie selections Molly Bruh and Samie Cloutier. Bruh, besides helping her Alberson Fury to four New York State Cup championships, attended the prestigious adidas ESP Camp and was a member of Region I Olympic Development Program team, that competed in Costa Rica and Florida. Cloutier guided Foothill High to a 21-1-0 overall record and a final ranking in ESPN’s Rise Fab 50 rankings of the Fall 2008 season.
GOALKEEPERS Sophomore Lindsey Rowe returns after a banner freshmen season in which she earned A-10 All-Rookie Team honors after leading the league with 104 saves. Rowe, a quick and fearless netminder, recorded five shutouts last season, the most for a GW freshman goalkeeper since 1987 and third all-time for a rookie in program history. Sophomore Bridget Mahon and junior Molly Jensen will compete for time behind Rowe.
MIDFIELDERS
SCHEDULE
Senior Brittany Eger and juniors Kristen Slack and Ashley Starks are three of the most athletic members of the GW squad and will be responsible for running the flanks, getting into the attacking third and creating goal-scoring opportunities for the Colonials. Junior Libby Osher and incoming freshmen Alycia Lee and Clare Roche also will be competing for time as flank midfielders. With the graduation of starting center midfielders Kerry Philbin and Erica Wright, Vogel looks to senior Misa Eiritz, who tied a career high scoring four goals in ’08, and sophomore Sierra Smidinger to fill the role. “Misa is a fantastic ball handler with outstanding vision,” said Vogel. “Sierra excels in the air, and they are both excellent distributors and are threats to score from outside the box.”
The Colonials will mix up their non-conference slate in 2009 with five new opponents on the schedule. New to this year’s schedule are rival Georgetown, Towson and UMBC. Robert Morris and Mount St. Mary’s have yet to face GW before this season. The home opener on Aug. 24 against Towson will have Hillin face off against her younger sister in a family battle. The sisters played against one another this past spring in an exhibition match at GW that ended in a tie. GW will host 10 opponents, matching a high in 2006, with six home matches during the Atlantic 10 Conference season, including matches against Dayton, St. Bonaventure and Duquesne. Georgetown and Old Dominion are coming off stellar ’08 seasons, both going deep into their conference tournaments. The Colonials open the conference season at Xavier late in September before hosting four conference matches at the Mount Vernon Soccer Field. Charlotte, last season’s regular-season and A-10 Tournament champion, will host the 2009 Atlantic 10 Conference Championship on Nov. 5-8, featuring the league’s top six teams.
DEFENDERS Seniors Emily Gower and Liz Hillin and junior Jillian Morgan return to a back line that stymied opponents in 2008. Both bring maturity and strong communication and organizational skills to the Colonials’ defense. The remaining defender positions will be filled by junior Michelle Aueron,

H E A D C O A C H TA N YA V O G E L Tanya Vogel reaches another milestone in her soccer career as she begins her 10th season as head coach at George Washington University in 2009, after a four-year standout career as a Colonial in the mid-90s. Last season, the Vogel-led squad finished the 2008 season at 8-11-0, earning conference wins over Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Duquesne and Saint Joseph’s. With underclassmen between the pipes, GW allowed only one more goal than they scored and made six fewer saves than their opponents. Vogel, became the first women’s soccer player to be inducted into GW’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002. Vogel took over a program that had won just three games in 1999 and has since added 70 victories, including back-toback 10-plus win seasons in 2002 and 2003. Vogel has mentored 10 allconference performers in nine years, including 2002 Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year, Kim Warner. Her players also achieve off the field, with 14 Colonials making the A-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll in both the fall and spring semesters last year, each earning a 3.5 GPA or better. She gained coaching experience after serving one year as the assistant women’s soccer coach at Cornell University and two seasons as an assistant at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. At Cornell and IUP, Vogel assisted in recruiting and fund-raising, among other duties. As part of the 1999 Cornell coaching staff, she helped lead the squad to its first winning season in four years (9-8-1) and a postseason bid to the ECAC Tournament. As a player at GW, Vogel was part of the school’s most successful season, 1996, when the Colonials (10-7-4) earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament. She ranks sixth all-time at GW in scoring with 52 points (21 goals, 10 assists). Vogel served as team captain her junior and senior seasons and was named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year in 1996, as well as a member of the Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team. She also was named to the Academic All-Conference squad. Vogel garnered third-team All-America honors from Soccer Buzz Magazine and firstteam Regional All-America accolades from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) that same year.

Tanya Vogel, in her 10th season as Colonials head coach, was the first women’s soccer player to be inducted into GW’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
In addition to her work at GW, Vogel continues to develop young soccer players in the DC Metro area through her work at various camps and clinics. She currently serves as the head coach of two U-14 squads, the Bethesda Freedom and Bethesda Threat. Vogel also serves on the NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Committee and chairs the NCAA Women’s Soccer Mid-Atlantic Regional Advisory Committee. Vogel completed her W-League playing career in 2004 as a member of the Cleveland Internationals. During her career in the W-League, she was a starter for the Rochester Ravens, Maryland Pride, Northern Virginia Majestics and Cleveland Internationals. She also participated on the United States Soccer Festival squad in 1999 and 2003, leading the Region I team to the national championship in 2003. A native of Penfield, NY, Vogel was a two-time high school AllAmerican at Penfield High and still holds the New York state record for career assists with 90. She was inducted into the Penfield High School Hall of Fame in 2003. Vogel holds both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in exercise and sports science from GW and completed her MBA at GW in 2006. G W AT H L E T I C H A L L O F FA M E The George Washington University Athletic Hall of Fame, founded in 1959 with an inaugural class of seven Colonials standouts, including legendary NBA coach Red Auerbach, now has a membership of 131. To see a complete list of GW Athletic Hall of Fame members and for more information on this prestigious group, see the GW Athletics’ Web site (www.GWsports.com) and click on “Traditions.” Nominations are welcomed annually. For deadlines and answers to other questions, or to request a nomination form, contact Ed McKee of GW Athletics at edmckee@gwu.edu or (202) 994-5778. TANYA VOGEL Tanya Vogel, the first women’s soccer player to be inducted into the GW Athletic Hall of Fame, ranks sixth all-time at the University with 52 points (21 goals, 10 assists). Vogel, a two-time team captain, led the Colonials to their first trip to the NCAA Tournament in 1996, garnering first team All-Conference and Atlantic 10 Player of the Year honors in the process. She was also tabbed a first team Regional All-American by the NSCAA. SHANNON HIGGINS-CIROVSKI Shannon Higgins-Cirovski was elected to the GW Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003 as a coach. Higgins-Cirovski was the head coach for the Colonials women’s soccer program from 1991-1997 and led the team to a 69-59-11 record. CHEMAR SMITH Chemar Smith, GW’s all-time leader in points (108) and goals (45), was inducted into the GW Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006. A national top-20 recruit coming out of high school, Smith lived up to the hype, scoring 10 goals in her first 10 matches. She was a four-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference first-team slection, including the A-10 Rookie of the Year in 1994, and ranks second all-time at GW in assists (13).
In February 2006, Chemar Smith (’98, center) joined current head coach Tanya Vogel (’96, left) and former coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski (right) in the GW Athletic Hall of Fame.
Chemar Smith (’98), a 2006 inductee of the GW Athletic Hall of Fame, remains the women’s soccer program’s career points and career goals leader 11 years after graduating from GW.

Washington is perhaps the most livable major city in the country. With over 40 colleges and universities and nearly 400,000 students, student life is a major aspect of the nation’s capital. GW’s two DC campuses are perfectly situated to make the most of that student life scene. Our Foggy Bottom Campus has well-defined and recognizable gateways and our Mount Vernon Campus offers a green suburban oasis. GW prides itself on the nearly seamless fit between both campuses and the city. But living here also means living in a “luxe” GW residence hall according to MSNBC. Under the expert care of GW Housing Programs, about 8,000 students live in the University’s 32 residence halls, 26 situated in Foggy Bottom and six on our Mount Vernon Campus. GW has multiple Living and Learning

Cohorts that are available for students interested in the performing arts, foreign languages, world cultures, healthy living, politics, and business leadership, among others. Our residence halls offer data, voice, and cable TV connectivity. Since GW recognizes the connections between a sound body and mind, the Lerner Health and Wellness Center is a showcase of fitness and wellness opportunities. With its 100-station cardio-exercise area, free weights, indoor track, squash and racquetball courts, and 25-yard lap indoor pool, GW enhances the quality of student life and supports students’ interests in intramural sports, club sports, and other recreational and wellness activities. GW students also have the opportunity to take “The Vern Express” to Mount Vernon for more recreational fun on our NCAA regulation softball, soccer, and lacrosse fields as well as enjoy our outdoor pool and tennis facilities, superb outdoor intramural and recreational facilities, and a low-ropes outdoor challenge course. When it comes to dining, GW’s own J Street, WOW Wingery, Ivory Tower, Gelman Library Starbucks, and Ames Dining Room are where you’ll find convenient campus meals! Combined they offer vegetarian and kosher options, as well as hot meals, grabn-go, all you care to eat, brand favorites, salads, specialty cof-
fee, groceries, and other specialty food and ethnic meal choices. You can dine on campus and in the city by using our declining balance and flexible spending program known as Colonial Cash, which is managed online and administered through our GWorld card program. Colonial Cash can also be used for a variety of retail, convenience, beauty, mail and residence hall laundry services, and GW Bookstore purchases. GW student life is also about honoring school traditions and starting new ones. In addition to more than 350 student-run organizations, the Student Activities Center, based in the Marvin Center, offers programming to educate and excite students throughout the year, from Midnight Breakfast to Stress Free Zone. Other programs include AIDS Awareness Week, International Week, Welcome Week and Greek Week! School spirit and Colonials varsity athletics are a huge part of GW student life. If you include the 22 NCAA Division I GW sports teams and the 50 club and intramural teams with the local professional sport attractions including the Capitals, Redskins, Nationals, Mystics, United, and Wizards, you will find a city full of collegiate and professional sports enthusiasts. So, you can see why we proudly say, Something Happens Here in the Classroom, Campus, and City! www.GWsports.com

Architectural concept rendering of the renovated Charles E. Smith Center, the home of George Washington Volleyball.
CHARLES E. SMITH CENTER Charles E. Smith Center has served as the Department of Athletics and Recreation’s home since 1975. A three-level building covering nearly an entire city block, Smith Center serves the University as well as the neighboring Foggy Bottom community. Due to the recent magnanimous gift by the Robert H. Smith and Charles E. Smith Family Foundations and the Robert P. and Arlene R. Kogod families, Charles E. Smith Center is in the midst of a major threephase, three-year multi-million dollar renovation. The interior upgrades will feature an academic center for student-athletes, improved general admission and club seating in the basketball arena, new locker rooms, remodeled office space to centralize athletic operations including those currently located elsewhere on campus, enhanced athletic training and weight room facilities, and a renovated natatorium (pool area). The exterior concepts include a dynamic new main entrance along 22nd Street, which will present a revitalized box office and concession concourse, and a new VIP entrance along F Street. The project is consistent with the 2007 Foggy Bottom Campus Plan and reinforces 22nd Street as the core of the campus. The renovation project is expected to be completed by early 2011, during which time the building will remain open without interruption of planned events. Located at 600 22nd Street, NW, the main arena of Smith Center seats 5,000 spectators and is the home of GW volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, and gymnastics. Also, many special events are held in Smith Center, including annual commencement ceremonies for several of GW’s schools, as well as musical and comedic performances. Recent appearances have been made by Billy Crystal, Ray Charles, the Beach Boys, Bill Cosby, Jerry Seinfeld and Robin Williams. In addition to the main arena, the facility includes two auxiliary gymnasiums, which are used for gymnastics and baseball practice as well as basketball, volleyball, badminton, indoor soccer and many other activities. The facility includes an eight-lane, 25-yard pool, which is also the home of the Colonials swimming and water polo teams. The pool features an aquatics scoreboard manufactured by Colorado Time Systems with an eight-lane display as well as a new records board, both installed in 2004. In addition to recreational swimming, the pool is used for scuba diving classes. In 1995, both upper baseline seating areas were renovated and feature chair-back seating. The arena has hosted a USA vs. Cuba volleyball match and the USA women’s basketball national team. Smith Center underwent a multi-phase renovation in 1996 to further accommodate the needs of GW athletics and special events. The renovations allowed for an expanded fitness center, more space and larger locker rooms for varsity athletics. Smith Center features a scoreboard system installed in September, 2004. The state-of-the-art BARCO system includes a center-hung scoreboard with four high-resolution video screens, two auxiliary scoreboards, two LED displays as well as basketball shot clocks, locker room clocks and time-of-day clocks. LERNER HEALTH & WELLNESS CENTER Opened on August 29, 2001, the four-level, multi-million dollar Lerner Health & Wellness Center across 23rd Street from Smith Center affords students a state-of-the-art recreational facility. The building houses four basketball courts; four racquetball courts; six international squash courts; free weights and cardio equipment; a jogging track; a three-lane, 25-yard lap pool; locker rooms; steam and sauna rooms; Recreational Sports offices and meeting rooms, as well as underground parking for 110 vehicles. For individual fitness, aerobics classes are held as well as clinics ranging from weight training to therapeutic massage techniques. Exercise bikes and a running track circling the upper level are available as are free weights and Lifefitness weight machines for circuit training.
MOUNT VERNON ATHLETICS FACILITY The GW-Mount Vernon Athletic Facility is home to Colonials soccer, lacrosse, tennis and softball. The facility includes a synthetic turf field for soccer and lacrosse, a softball diamond, a six-lane, 25-yard outdoor pool, 11 hard courts for tennis and a small gymnasium. The facility also includes newly-renovated coaches offices, locker rooms and support areas for these teams.
ACADEMIC SUPPOR T SER VICES The GW Department of Athletics employs five full-time academic support staff members, 30-40 tutors to help 400-plus student-athletes. Because of the unique challenges created by the transition to both college academic and athletic competition, the academic coordinators — along with student-athlete peers — provide ’Welcome’ activities for freshmen as well as other opportunities to discuss issues such as time management, campus resources, study strategies and adjustment to the college experience.
