WELCOME TO GW VOLLEYBALL

Welcome to George Washington Volleyball. We are committed to achieving our goals of becoming wellrounded individuals, exemplary students and outstanding athletes through constant hard work, open communication and selflessness. Over the years, GW volleyball has been one of the most successful volleyball programs in the Atlantic 10 Conference and the northeast region. George Washington also has a set a standard of excellence in the classroom. Our program has been recognized each of the last two years by the NCAA for its 99 percent graduation rate. In fact, all GW student-athletes have graduated at a 96 percent rate during that period. At GW, our student-athletes are provided a unique and competitive environment by blending the intimate energy of our Foggy Bottom campus with the national and

international presence of all that Washington, DC has to offer. Moreover, our strong curriculum, specialized fields of study and the interconnection between scholarly theory and real life experiences are critical to the intellectual and character development of our student-athletes. The George Washington University and the volleyball program are committed to excellence. The home of GW Volleyball, Charles E. Smith Center, is in the midst of a major three-year, multi-million dollar renovation that has resulted in a new playing surface, improved lighting, a new volleyball-only locker room and a new academic support suite complete with computer lab in time for the 2009 season. The coaches, administration, support staff and student-athletes here are determined to continue this level of excellence. — Head Coach Jojit Coronel

HEAD COACH JOJIT CORONEL Jojit Coronel is in his 11th year with the George Washington volleyball program and 10th year as the head coach. After serving as the assistant coach in 1999, Coronel was elevated to head coach in August 2000. In 10 years under Coronel, GW volleyball has advanced to the Atlantic 10 Tournament four times. GW won the A-10 title in 2000, capturing the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Under extremely difficult circumstances that year, Coronel kept his senior-laden squad focused on the season ahead and guided the players to a 25-6 record, the conference title and the team’s first NCAA berth since 1995. Accordingly, he was named the conference’s Coach of the Year and was selected as one of eight regional Coaches of the Year by the AVCA. In 2003, he guided the Colonials to a school-record 10-0 start en route to a 21-11 record and the No. 3 seed in the 2003 A-10 Tournament. Coronel came to GW after spending four seasons as the assistant coach for the men’s volleyball program at the University of the Pacific, one of the top collegiate men’s volleyball programs in the country. As the Colonials’ assistant, Coronel served as the recruiting coordinator and was involved with every aspect of the GW program. Aside from his recruiting duties, he assisted in all phases of skill development, scouting and match preparation, as well as team travel. Coronel’s responsibilities while at Pacific included recruiting, oncourt training and other administrative duties. A 1993 graduate of the University of California, Santa Cruz with a bachelor of arts degree in political science, Coronel served as the Banana Slugs’ head coach from 1993-95. He also has been involved with various junior club programs (Team Santa Cruz, Nike Pacific Volleyball Club and DC Juniors) that compete in the Junior National Championships, Southern California Boys Classic and the Volleyball Festival. In addition to his club experience, Coronel continues his involvement with the USA National Volleyball program. He was a volunteer coach for the men’s team at the 1995 USA World University Games (WUG) and

G W AT H L E T I C H A L L O F FA M E The George Washington University Athletic Hall of Fame, founded in 1959 with an inaugural class of seven Colonials standouts, including the late legendary NBA coach Red Auerbach, now numbers a membership of 131. To see a complete list of GW Athletic Hall of Fame members and for more information on this prestigious group, see the GW Athletics’ Web site (www.GWsports.com) and click on “Athletic Hall of Fame.” Nominations are welcomed annually. For deadlines and answers to other questions or to request a nomination form, contact Ed McKee of GW Athletics at edmckee@gwu.edu or (202) 994-5778.

SVETLANA VTYURINA, INDUCTED 2003 Svetlana Vtyurina, GW volleyball’s only All-American, was inducted into the GW Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003. She owns both the NCAA record for kills in a career (3,043) and match (56). Vtyurina, a 6-foot-4 outside hitter, is one of the most dominant offensive players in collegiate volleyball history. Academically, Vtyurina’s 3.67 GPA in finance twice earned her GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. She is the only student-athlete in Atlantic 10 history to be named Player of the Year as a freshman — an award she also garnered as a senior. She holds 14 GW volleyball records and was named the 1996 Lynn George Outstanding Senior Woman Athlete award winner for academic and athletic excellence. An AVCA National Player of the Week, Vtyurina has been featured in USA Today, Volleyball Magazine, Volleyball Monthly, ServiceLine, GW Magazine and The Washington Post. Vtyurina earned her MBA at GW in 1998 and was a prestigious Presidential Fellow post-graduate student. She is employed by the International Monetary Fund as an economist in the Central Asia and Middle East Department.

CHERYL (FARLEY) DODDS, INDUCTED 2001 Cheryl A. (Farley) Dodds was an outstanding volleyball player at GW for four seasons (1985-88). Playing during a transitional time at GW (for two coaches in four seasons — Pat Sullivan and Cindy Laughlin), Dodds earned All-Atlantic 10 Conference first-team honors in successive years, 1987 and 1988, as well as team MVP and co-captain in ’88. The four teams on which she played rolled up an impressive cumulative record of 97-51. A 5-foot-11 middle blocker-hitter who won the Lynn George Outstanding Senior Woman Athlete award in 1989, Dodds dots the GW volleyball record book 10 times in eight categories some 19 seasons after her graduation. Dodds gained her bachelor’s degree in travel and tourism at GW in 1989. A 1985 graduate of Dracut (MA) High School, she now resides in Springfield, VA, with her husband, Blair Dodds, and their daughter, Sydney (9), and son, Patrick (6).

ANNA (McWHIR TER) BUSH, INDUCTED 2000 Anna (McWhirter) Bush, Class of 1987, was a four-year letterwinner in volleyball (1983-86) and co-captain of the 1986 squad. A talented hitter for the Colonials, she was a first-team All-Atlantic 10 pick in ’86 after gaining second-team allconference honors in ’85. A native of Atlanta, GA, where she starred in volleyball at Chamblee High School, she was an excellent “team” player at GW, helping her teammates achieve a four-year record of 107-46 (.700). She also is listed in five individual career leader categories: attack percentage (second), service aces (third), digs (eighth), kills (ninth) and total attempts (13th). She has been head girls volleyball coach at Marist School in Atlanta since 2005, after serving as assistant there for several years, and in 2006 won the Georgia AAAA state volleyball title. Earning a bachelor’s degree in marketing at GW in ’87, she is married to Phil Bush. They live in Atlanta with their daughter, Cory (13).

CORINNE (HENSLEY) THOMPSON, INDUCTED 1999 Corinne (Hensley) Thompson was a four-year letterwinner in volleyball (1983-86) and co-captain of the squad in 1986. A three-year starter and standout setter for the Colonials, she was selected to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference team and the A-10 All-Tournament second team in 1986. She still ranks among the GW all-time single-season leaders in assists and attack percentage. She also ranks among GW’s career leaders in assists and solo blocks. GW posted a combined four-year record of 107-46 (.700). She is also one of three GW volleyball players to make the NCAA All-Northeast Region team. Born in Brooklyn, NY, Thompson has run in several marathons, including the U.S. Marine Corps Marathon in 1996. Thompson, who resides in Warrenton, VA, is married to Kelly Thompson and together they have four children: Hannah (11), Sam (10), Julia (8) and Tyler (7).

G W AT H L E T I C H A L L O F FA M E SUSAN M. (ENGLISH) BARKLEY, INDUCTED 1998 Susan M. (English) Barkley was a four-year letterwinner in volleyball (1980-83) and captain of her squad in both 1982 and 1983. A left-side hitter for the Colonials, she was selected to the Atlantic 10 Conference All-Tournament team in ’83 and was her team’s MVP that season. Barkley played at GW during a “transitional” time for women’s sports in America. Her first two college seasons were as an AIAW program and her final two were as a member of the NCAA. Though she played more than 20 years ago, she still is listed in the Colonials’ single-season records for service aces (first), kills per game average (seventh), and total kill attempts (ninth). A native of Hermosa Beach, CA, where she starred in volleyball at Bishop Montgomery High School, Barkley brought a very strong playing background to GW from California. In addition to her individual skills, she was an excellent team player, helping her teammates achieve a four-year record of 139-66 (.680). In addition, she was selected to the East team for the 1981 U.S. Olympic Festival. Barkley also earned an MBA at GW in 1986. While in graduate school at GW, she served as volleyball coach at Marymount University in Arlington, VA, for three seasons (’85-87). She is married to David Barkley, former head volleyball coach at Villanova (’88-91), and the couple has three daughters, Ellyn (18), Emma (15) and Mara (13). Barkley also is manager of national database development at USA Volleyball. She and her family reside in Colorado Springs, CO.

MICHELLE KNOX ZALOOM, INDUCTED 1996 Michelle Knox Zaloom, a two-time U.S. Olympian, was the first woman athlete to be inducted into the GW Hall of Fame. A 1986 graduate of GW, she received seven varsity letters, four in volleyball and three as a member of the varsity rowing team. Playing middle blocker on the volleyball team, Knox Zaloom was named MVP in 1985 and also was a member of the Atlantic 10 All-Conference team in ’84 and ’85. From 1984-86, she was named to the All-Atlantic 10 team for varsity rowing. In her senior year, she finished fourth at Nationals in a GW Four. After graduation, she rowed on the ’91 and ’93 National teams, earning gold and bronze medals, respectively, and in 1992 she competed in the Summer Olympic Games at Barcelona. Knox Zaloom competed in women’s double sculls (rowing) at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. She is married to Charlie Zaloom, also a GW rowing alumnus. The couple has a son, Charlie (11), and a daughter, Kathryn (9), and they reside in Mattituck, NY.

DR. PAT SULLIVAN, INDUCTED 1995 Dr. Pat Sullivan served as the women’s volleyball coach from 1978 to 1986. In nine seasons at GW, her teams were 289-140 (.674) including more than 40 victories in both 1980 and ’81. In addition, she served as head coach in the Sports Festival (now the U.S. Olympic Festival). Her final Colonials team in 1986 was 31-9 and she earned Atlantic 10 Conference Volleyball Coach of the Year. Dr. Sullivan earned her bachelor’s degree from SUNY-Cortland in 1969 and four years later gained a master’s degree at Smith College. Retiring as Colonials’ volleyball coach in 1987, she refocused on academia and received her doctoral degree in higher education from GW in 1989. After 29 years at the university, Dr. Sullivan retired in 2007 and retained the title of Emeritus Faculty in GW’s Department of Exercise Science, where she also served as the department’s vicechair and as the director of the undergraduate major in public health. She now resides in Stamford, VT.

GW’s 1993 NCAA team was the first Colonials volleyball team to earn a berth in the NCAA Volleyball Tournament. G W A N D WA S H I N G T O N , D C GW: SOMETHING HAPPENS HERE The exceptional opportunities, resources, and experiences of The George Washington University await you—in the classroom, on campus, and in the city. As an institution of higher learning and academic research, we have the “added attributes” of offering students an academic and social life in the world-class city of Washington, DC. As a result, we attract an exciting mix of students and faculty to GW. We create and support a unique, fun, and competitive atmosphere for talented students and faculty from across the globe. We are able to capitalize on the energy and excitement of a national and international city and match it to the opportunities we offer on our campus and in our classrooms.

Washington is perhaps the most livable major city in the country. With over 40 colleges and universities and nearly 400,000 students, student life is a major aspect of the nation’s capital. GW’s two DC campuses are perfectly situated to make the most of that student life scene. Our Foggy Bottom Campus has well-defined and recognizable gateways and our Mount Vernon Campus offers a green suburban oasis. GW prides itself on the nearly seamless fit between both campuses and the city. But living here also means living in a “luxe” GW residence hall according to MSNBC. Under the expert care of GW Housing Programs, about 8,000 students live in the University’s 32 residence halls, 26 situated in Foggy Bottom and six on our Mount Vernon Campus. GW has multiple Living and Learning

Kogan Plaza is located in the heart of GW’s main campus.

Cohorts that are available for students interested in the performing arts, foreign languages, world cultures, healthy living, politics, and business leadership, among others. Our residence halls offer data, voice, and cable TV connectivity. Since GW recognizes the connections between a sound body and mind, the Lerner Health and Wellness Center is a showcase of fitness and wellness opportunities. With its 100-station cardio-exercise area, free weights, indoor track, squash and racquetball courts, and 25-yard lap indoor pool, GW enhances the quality of student life and supports students’ interests in intramural sports, club sports, and other recreational and wellness activities. GW students also have the opportunity to take “The Vern Express” to Mount Vernon for more recreational fun on our NCAA regulation softball, soccer, and lacrosse fields as well as enjoy our outdoor pool and tennis facilities, superb outdoor intramural and recreational facilities, and a low-ropes outdoor challenge course. When it comes to dining, GW’s own J Street, WOW Wingery, Ivory Tower, Gelman Library Starbucks, and Ames Dining Room are where you’ll find convenient campus meals! Combined they offer vegetarian and kosher options, as well as hot meals, grabn-go, all you care to eat, brand favorites, salads, specialty cof-

fee, groceries, and other specialty food and ethnic meal choices. You can dine on campus and in the city by using our declining balance and flexible spending program known as Colonial Cash, which is managed online and administered through our GWorld card program. Colonial Cash can also be used for a variety of retail, convenience, beauty, mail and residence hall laundry services, and GW Bookstore purchases. GW student life is also about honoring school traditions and starting new ones. In addition to more than 350 student-run organizations, the Student Activities Center, based in the Marvin Center, offers programming to educate and excite students throughout the year, from Midnight Breakfast to Stress Free Zone. Other programs include AIDS Awareness Week, International Week, Welcome Week and Greek Week! School spirit and Colonials varsity athletics are a huge part of GW student life. If you include the 22 NCAA Division I GW sports teams and the 50 club and intramural teams with the local professional sport attractions including the Capitals, Redskins, Nationals, Mystics, United, and Wizards, you will find a city full of collegiate and professional sports enthusiasts. So, you can see why we proudly say, Something Happens Here in the Classroom, Campus, and City!

Architectural concept rendering of the renovated Charles E. Smith Center, the home of George Washington Volleyball.

CHARLES E. SMITH CENTER Charles E. Smith Center has served as the Department of Athletics and Recreation’s home since 1975. A three-level building covering nearly an entire city block, Smith Center serves the University as well as the neighboring Foggy Bottom community. Due to the recent magnanimous gift by the Robert H. Smith and Charles E. Smith Family Foundations and the Robert P. and Arlene R. Kogod families, Charles E. Smith Center is in the midst of a major threephase, three-year multi-million dollar renovation. The interior upgrades will feature an academic center for student-athletes, improved general admission and club seating in the basketball arena, new locker rooms, remodeled office space to centralize athletic operations including those currently located elsewhere on campus, enhanced athletic training and weight room facilities, and a renovated natatorium (pool area). The exterior concepts include a dynamic new main entrance along 22nd Street, which will present a revitalized box office and concession concourse, and a new VIP entrance along F Street. The project is consistent with the 2007 Foggy Bottom Campus Plan and reinforces 22nd Street as the core of the campus. The renovation project is expected to be completed by early 2011, during which time the building will remain open without interruption of planned events. Located at 600 22nd Street, NW, the main arena of Smith Center seats 5,000 spectators and is the home of GW volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, and gymnastics. Also, many special events are held in Smith Center, including annual commencement ceremonies for several of GW’s schools, as well as musical and comedic performances. Recent appearances have been made by Billy Crystal, Ray Charles, the Beach Boys, Bill Cosby, Jerry Seinfeld and Robin Williams. In addition to the main arena, the facility includes two auxiliary gymnasiums, which are used for gymnastics and baseball practice as well as basketball, volleyball, badminton, indoor soccer and many other activities. The facility includes an eight-lane, 25-yard pool, which is also the home of the Colonials swimming and water polo teams. The pool features an aquatics scoreboard manufactured by Colorado Time Systems with an eight-lane display as well as a new records board, both installed in 2004. In addition to recreational swimming, the pool is used for scuba diving classes. In 1995, both upper baseline seating areas were renovated and feature chair-back seating. The arena has hosted a USA vs. Cuba volleyball match and the USA women’s basketball national team. Smith Center underwent a multi-phase renovation in 1996 to further accommodate the needs of GW athletics and special events. The renovations allowed for an expanded fitness center, more space and larger locker rooms for varsity athletics. Smith Center features a scoreboard system installed in September, 2004. The state-of-the-art BARCO system includes a center-hung scoreboard with four high-resolution video screens, two auxiliary scoreboards, two LED displays as well as basketball shot clocks, locker room clocks and time-of-day clocks. In

September, 2005, the lower season ticket holders section was renovated with new chairback seating.

LERNER HEALTH & WELLNESS CENTER Opened on August 29, 2001, the four-level, multi-million dollar Lerner Health & Wellness Center across 23rd Street from Smith Center affords students a state-of-the-art recreational facility. The building houses four basketball courts; four racquetball courts; six international squash courts; free weights and cardio equipment; a jogging track; a three-lane, 25-yard lap pool; locker rooms; steam and sauna rooms; Recreational Sports offices and meeting rooms, as well as underground parking for 110 vehicles. For individual fitness, aerobics classes are held as well as clinics ranging from weight training to therapeutic massage techniques. Exercise bikes and a running track circling the upper level are available as are free weights and Lifefitness weight machines for circuit training.

MOUNT VERNON ATHLETICS FACILITY The GW-Mount Vernon Athletic Facility is home to Colonials soccer, lacrosse, tennis and softball. The facility includes a synthetic turf field for soccer and lacrosse, a softball diamond, a six-lane, 25-yard outdoor pool, 11 hard courts for tennis and a small gymnasium. The facility also includes newly-renovated coaches offices, locker rooms and support areas for these teams.

ACADEMIC SUPPOR T SER VICES The GW Department of Athletics employs five full-time academic support staff members, 30-40 tutors to help 400-plus student-athletes. Because of the unique challenges created by the transition to both college academic and athletic competition, the academic coordinators — along with student-athlete peers — provide ’Welcome’ activities for freshmen as well as other opportunities to discuss issues such as time management, campus resources, study strategies and adjustment to the college experience.
