2009 Men’s Outlook Coming off an up-and-down season in which they finished 11th out of 14, the George Washington men’s team expects its experienced group of seven upperclassmen to lead the Colonials to a stronger finish in 2009. Junior Zach Borenstein and senior Dan Cartica will lead the Colonials in 2009. Due to injury, Borenstein only raced once last season, but has progressed since the end of last season and is expected to lead the Colonials at the Atlantic 10 Championships. Cartica, a transfer from Clemson University, was one of the top high school prospects in the Northeast Region four years ago. After arriving in Foggy Bottom last fall, Cartica hopes to have a breakout season in 2009 and make a push for all-conference standing in the Atlantic 10. Senior Rob Lockhart and senior Andrew Coleman also are expected to be in the top five this season for the Colonials. Lockhart ran in three races in 2008 and had his best performance at the A-10 Championship when he placed 70th after running a 26:25. Coleman provides the squad with senior leadership and was among the top five in 2007. Sophomores Dan Kane and Scott Garrett return to George Washington looking to build off their freshman campaigns and compete for spots in the top seven. The team will also have upperclassmen Andrew Zahornacky and Stephen Rutgers to add depth to the Colonials in 2009 and compete for spots in the top seven. Alex Dadds is the lone newcomer to the squad and Beil said he expects him to “push for a top-five spot right away.” Dadds is originally from Louisville, KY, and aims to crack the top-five in his inaugural season in Foggy Bottom.

The GW men’s team looks for its experienced group of seven upperclassmen to lead the Colonials to a stronger finish in 2009. 2009 Women’s Outlook The Colonials enter the 2009 season led by Megan Hogan, who returns for her second year after a record-setting first campaign. Hogan led George Washington in every race she ran in 2008 and expects to build on her standout seasons in both cross country and track and field

The GW women's team hopes to build off 2008 and to continue progressing in 2009. from a year ago. The Ballston Spa, NY, native became the first Colonials runner to qualify for the NCAA National Championships after finishing second in the 2008 Atlantic 10 Championships. Hogan’s accomplishments last season put her in a strong position to lead the Colonials to big things in 2009. The Colonials also welcome back senior Meaghan Smith and junior Jessica Stern to complement Hogan in the upper half of the top five. Smith’s season-best from a year ago was her finish at the A-10 Championship. Stern looks to improve on a sophomore season in which she finished 18th at the Atlantic 10 Conference meet. Juliana Stern and Heather Stevens are two of the seven newcomers who are expected to make an immediate impact for the Colonials in 2009. Beil believes that the two “will round out the top five and will provide much-needed depth at the front of every race.” Stern, the younger sister of GW runner Jessica Stern, was a three-time all-state runner in Florida and will try to continue her success when she arrives in Washington, DC. Stevens, a newcomer out of Hinsdale, IL, was also an all-state runner in Illinois and ran at the 2006 Nike Team Nationals. Freshmen Erin Crawford and Julia Weir are another duo that Beil anticipates will have an immediate impact for the Colonials in 2009. Beil indicated that the two athletes “should step in and push for places in the top seven right away.” Weir was an All-State runner from Florham Park, NJ, and Crawford was a standout from East Aurora, NY, where she was part of the four-time New York State Girls Cross Country championship team. Sophomores Emily Foster and Kyla Sommers return to GW looking to build on their freshman campaigns and compete for spots in the top seven. The team also welcomes three more newcomers in Maura Welch, Nora Barnicle and Alexandra Smargiassi. They are all expected to add depth for the Colonials this season and will compete for spots in the top seven. Returners Estelle Faulkner and Kelly Wills also are expected to provide valuable depth as the women’s squad builds on the progress achieved during the strong 2008 season. The Colonials have the depth, experience and talent to continue to make strides in 2009 and become one of the contenders in the A-10 Conference. The top five will need, once again, to avoid injuries in order for the team to be successful, but with the talented newcomers and the established returners, the George Washington women’s cross country team should continue to make progress toward Beil’s vision of achieving an A-10 Conference title.

T H E G E O R G E WA S H I N G T O N U N I V E R S I T Y BRIAN BEIL / HEAD COACH

JENNI SCHAPPERT / ASST. COACH

Brian Beil enters his sixth season as head men’s and women’s cross country coach at The George Washington University. Beil returned to GW in 2004 to lead the program after serving as an assistant on the Colonials’ staff from 2001-02. In his five seasons at the helm, Beil’s leadership has been seen not only on the running trails throughout DC, but in the classroom as well. While at GW, Beil’s squads have combined for seven first-place team finishes, and 29 athletes have combined for 53 commissioner’s honor roll certificates. Additionally, Beil has helped two runners earn Academic All-Conference honors. In his fourth season, Beil sent Megan Hogan, the first GW cross country runner, to the NCAA Nationals where she raced against the nation’s 250 best runners. Hogan also finished second out of 139 runners at the A-10 Championships to tie the George Washington record for highest finish at the conference meet. Beil also guided Hogan to a 19th-place finish at the Mid-Atlantic Regionals. During his third season, a pair of long-standing GW records were set under Beil’s guidance. In a first place team finish at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational, Audrey Noonan won the individual title in a GW record, 18:14.8. The following week Noonan finished seventh at the Atlantic 10 Championship with a school-record 18:19.2. Under Beil’s direction, Noonan became the first All-Conference performer at GW since 1996 and she also received Academic All-Conference honors. The following season, Noonan, then a junior, became the program’s first two-time allconference performer. While an assistant at GW, Beil helped lead the men’s team to consecutive top five finishes at the Atlantic 10 Championship, their highest finishes since 1994. Beil’s athletes also excelled in the classroom as eight members of the men’s team and 20 members of the women’s team combined to earn 40 A-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll accolades during his two-year stint. Before joining the Colonials’ staff, Beil served as an assistant coach for East Carolina’s men’s and women’s cross country/track teams during the 2000-01 campaign. His efforts produced a qualifier for the NCAA Championships, while one of his athletes earned NCAA AllEast Region accolades on the track. In addition, he implemented strength-training programs, coordinated academic progress of the student athletes, planned weekly workouts and developed course layouts for several cross country meets while with the Pirates. As an athlete, Beil was a four-year letter-winner in cross country and track at East Carolina and was a member of three record-setting relay teams. He served as the cross country team captain in his senior season and was voted team MVP. Beil was also presented with the 1999 ECU Men’s Cross Country Prestigious Pirate Award for outstanding achievements in the classroom and on the playing field. In his first year at East Carolina, he was voted the team’s most outstanding freshman. Beil earned his Bachelor of Science degree in health and human performance from ECU in 2000. He resides in Arlington, VA.

Jenni Schappert enters her second season as an assistant coach in the cross country program. In her first season, Schappert helped guide Megan Hogan to the NCAA Nationals, when she became the first GW runner in the history of the program to do so. Schappert also helped guide Hogan to a second-place finish at the A-10 championships, which tied for the best finish by a GW runner in the program’s history. A native of North East, MD, Schappert assists Beil in all aspects of the program with primary emphasis directing the Colonials’ recruiting efforts. Schappert, a four-year letterwinner at Lehigh where she served as team captain, was named Lehigh University Graduating Scholar-Athlete of the Year. A three-time team MVP and two-time NCAA Academic AllAmerica selection, Schappert was Lehigh’s first cross country runner to qualify for the NCAA Division I Women’s Cross Country Championship. She graduated from Lehigh in 2006. She current resides in Arlington, VA.
