2010 SEASON OUTLOOK After earning the top seed in the Atlantic 10 Championship in back-toback seasons, The George Washington men’s tennis team wants to bring the title home in 2010. The men’s team returns a core group of players that know what it takes to get to the top. Last season, the Colonials swept all seven A-10 opponents in the regular season, including shutout victories over Duquesne, Richmond and Dayton. The Colonials rolled into the A-10 Championship on a six-match winning streak, and defeated Saint Joseph’s in the first round. GW fell to St. Bonaventure in the second round, but bounced back to win the third-place match over Saint Louis. Juniors Erik Hannah, Yan Levinski and Chris Kushma, all named to 2009 A-10 All-Conference teams, return with more experience and confidence from the fall 2009 slate. Kushma closed the fall with an 11-2 record, bringing home titles from the UVa Invitational and Georgetown Classic. Last season’s team MVP, sophomore Ugur Atalay had a great freshman season as A-10 coaches tabbed him the 2009 Most Outstanding Rookie. It was a repeat award for GW as Levinski earned the honor in 2008. Atalay won all of his No. 2 singles matches in the conference tournament to finish 15-6 overall. Sophomores Richard Blumenfeld, Andy Erickson, and junior Arya Vayghan all challenged and motivated each other to keep bringing their best play to the court. Blumenfeld had great success as a freshman at the No. 1 doubles position. Erickson’s season was shortened due to injuries, but he was undefeated last season. Vayghan started and ended the season strong, after overcoming illness in the middle of the year. Freshman Ken Mkrtchian and walk-on Garrett Lockhart paired up in the fall at the Navy Invitational and took a share of the title, dropping only one match. Mkrtchian has the power and the skills to challenge anyone on the squad for a starting spot this year. This season’s schedule has the Colonials matched up against more ranked teams and individuals, including William & Mary, Columbia and Radford. Splitting the schedule between Montclair Country Club and the Mount Vernon Campus, the Colonials’ home matches include area rivals Georgetown and Howard. The 2010 Atlantic 10 Men’s Tennis Championship will be held April 16-18 at Club4Life in Monroeville, PA. Chris Kushma

GEORGE WASHINGTON FACILITIES
Greg Munoz is in his fourth season as the head coach for men’s tennis at The George Washington University. He is responsible for all aspects of the Colonials men’s tennis program. In 2009, Munoz coached the Colonials to their second-straight No. 1 seed at the Atlantic 10 Championship, sweeping seven A-10 opponents during the season. Also in back-to-back seasons, a GW player, Ugur Atalay, was named Most Outstanding Rookie Performer under Munoz’s tutelage. Yan Levinski and Erik Hannah were repeat members of the All-Conference teams, along with Chris Kushma, who had a breakout year. Prior to GW, the New Jersey native was the volunteer assistant coach for Johns Hopkins University while pursuing his master’s in finance and marketing in 1993. Munoz was the assistant coach for men’s tennis at Johns Hopkins in 1993-94. He also was the head girls tennis coach at Washington’s Georgetown Visitation Prep School from 2000-01 and has worked with GW’s men’s tennis program in 1999. A 1992 graduate of Binghamton University, Munoz was the East Regional Senior Player of the Year and an NCAA singles qualifier from 1990-92. He was the Rolex East Doubles champion in 1991. Munoz resides in Falls Church, VA, with his wife, Ariska-Citra, and two daughters Alexandria and Ariana.
The George Washington University women’s (men's) tennis team splits its home matches at the Montclair Country Club located in Montclair, VA, and at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex on the GW-Mount Vernon Campus, located at 2100 Foxhall Road, NW. The Complex underwent minor renovations which were completed in the Spring of 2009 that included new coaches offices, a coaches lounge, as well as a new weight room for student-athletes.
SEAN HOLCOMB-JONES / ASSISTANT COACH Sean Holcomb-Jones is in his second year as an assistant coach for the Colonials. Before coming to GW, Holcomb-Jones created, and is the director of the Baltimore Fitness and Tennis where he coached 10 nationally ranked and two internationally ranked players. He coordinates and oversees all player development for the organization. He has also coached a national team for Tennis Europe in 2006-07, and was an assistant coach at Coppin State University for the 2005-07 seasons. Holcomb-Jones also coached the Kuwaiti and Puerto Rican junior national teams in 200001. He is USPTA and USTA certified. The Schenectady, NY, native graduated from Towson University as a three-year letterwinner on the men’s tennis team in 2005 and is currently pursuing a master’s in philosophy at GW.
ACADEMIC SUPPORT Established in 1983, the Academic Support Services Program was initially designed to provide support services to a small group of students. The program has been expanded and includes services for all of GW’s student-athletes, with an emphasis on individual responsibility and pride in academic accomplishments. The Department of Athletics employs five full-time staff members and 30-40 tutors to assist the 400-plus student-athletes. The Academic Support Program works with student-athletes to help them develop career interests, explore employment opportunities and become familiar with the GW Career and Cooperative Education Center.
SPORTS MEDICINE Student-athletes receive medical treatment from an experienced staff of certified athletic trainers as well as a staff of student athletic trainers who provide on-site medical care before, during and after all practices and games. GW’s primary team physician, along with a dentist and an eyecare specialist, also are available throughout the year. The training room is fully equipped with the modern apparatuses required for treatment and rehabilitation of all types of sports-related injuries. Espousing a philosophy based on preventive medicine, the training room works with student-athletes to keep them in playing shape, return them to competition and maintain their level of conditioning throughout the year.
