2009-10 MEN’S SEASON OUTLOOK

MEN’S ATLANTIC 10 TITLES

WOMEN’S ATLANTIC 10 TITLES

Sprint This season could potentially see some of the fastest sprinting in GW program history. The sprint group will be led by senior Rick Rogers and sophomore Marshall Seedorff. They will be joined by freshmen Paolo De Luca, Alexander Etz, Niklas Glenesk, Sean Malinoski, and Luke Quimby. “We are so excited about the direction that our sprint program has taken. These men have the ability to put GW relays back on the medal podium,” head coach Dan Rhinehart said. Middle/Distance The middle distance and distance programs will experience a complete transformation this season with the addition of freshmen Duncan Galler, Stephen Nelson, Mitch Reed, De Luca and Glenesk, while sophomore Davin Harding will round out the group. Backstroke Senior Cascade Tuholske will add some experience to the young group of backstrokers, which includes Jim Coleman, Stephan Franke, Zach Peart, Etz and Malinoski. Breaststroke Junior captain Andrew Maguire and Rogers will pace the GW breaststrokers along with sophomore Dan Krizan and De Luca. “Our returnees are extremely hard workers and I know that they will all push each other to get better every single day,” Rhinehart said. Butterfly Harding will return to again make a push for an Atlantic 10 title as he was the highest-placing freshman last year in the 100-yard fly. He also had a fourth-place finish in the 200. Maguire, along with Tuholske and Etz, will also be in the mix. Individual Medley Double event finalist Tuholske will lead Konrad Kopczynski, De Luca, Franke, and Peart. Tuholske was able to post a 6th-place finish in the 400 IM and an eighth-place finish in the 200-yard IM. The Colonials have dominated the IM events, winning both the 200 and 400 Atlantic 10 Championship title for the last four consecutive years.

Sprint The Colonials return one for the fastest sprinters in the Conference in Paola Leor. In 2009, Leor posted the Atlantic 10’s second-fastest time in the 100-yard freestyle and the seventh best time in the 50-yard freestyle. Leor is joined by freshman Jordan Liedholm, sophomore Isabel Tawney, and senior captain Katrina Timlin as the Colonials will attempt to top the record-setting performances of last season’s 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays. Middle/Distance Sophomores Kayla Jensen and Sarah Richards join senior Cissy Ye in the distance events. Liedholm will add some much needed depth in the 200- and the 800-yard freestyle relays. Backstroke Senior Emily Leik and Tawney will lead the Colonials in the backstroke events. Last season, Tawney consistently posted some of the A-10’s fastest 100-yard backstroke times, despite being injured for the majority of the season. She threatened to break Maggie Moss’s 100-yard backstroke record on several occasions. Breaststroke GW has enjoyed a strong tradition of producing some of the most talented breaststrokers in the Atlantic 10. Despite graduating school recordholder Ariana Berdini and fellow classmate and finalist Lauren Fuchs, the Colonials are looking to Timlin and senior Jen Cohn to turn in fast times in the breaststroke events. Butterfly The 2009-10 season features a deep corps of butterflyers. Juniors Sarah Beggs and Leor were both ranked among the top-16 in the 100-yard fly last season and the two are looking to break Ruth Dubyel’s seven-year-old school record. Joining them are freshmen Paige Dingess, Christine O’Connell and Liedholm “We are very excited about our butterfly group this year. The freshmen are joining us mostly as 100-yard specialists; however, I am excited to see how they will develop in the 200-yard fly alongside junior veteran Noelle Miesfeld,” Rhinehart said. Individual Medley Returnees Leik and Leor are both coming off career-best performances at the 2009 Atlantic 10 Championships. Leor posted a 200-yard IM time in the top eight. “Our IM group is small, but extremely capable,” Rhinehart said. “I have no doubt that this season will see more best times and our women back on the top of the conference ladder.”

In 2009 the Colonials will practice and compete in a newly renovated pool as part of the multi-million dollar renovation of Charles E. Smith Center. The GW pool has added new chair-back seating for spectators that allows for more space on the deck, as well as greatly improved lighting, a new audio system and a new ventilation system.

MITCH DALTON / ASSISTANT COACH

Head Coach Dan Rhinehart is in his 12th year at the helm of the GW Men's and Women's Swimming program. During the past 11 seasons, the Colonials have rewritten both the university and Conference record book by establishing 54 school records and 17 Atlantic 10 records. Since joining GW in 1995, Rhinehart has erased every single school record bar except two (men’s 1000 freestyle and women’s 200 breaststroke.) Rhinehart has coached a total of 71 Atlantic 10 Champions, eight Conference Swimmers of the Year, and has produced four athletes with Division I NCAA Championship consideration times; the most recent being David Zenk in 2009. Three of these athletes continued on to compete in the NCAA Championships In addition to these historic performances GW swimmers have seen success in the classroom. Last season, the CSCAA awarded Rhinehart’s Colonials for having the 6th-best GPA in the country. The 2009 saw the fourth consecutive season that a GW swimmer had been named to the Atlantic 10 All-Academic squad. Prior to becoming head coach at GW, Rhinehart served as the assistant coach for the Colonials for three seasons. Rhinehart has been involved with swimming and coaching since 1976, working with a wide variety of athletes including Olympic and world-ranked swimmers. He came to the Washington D.C. area from San Diego where he was the head swim coach at Mount Carmel High School for five years. Under his direction, several of his swimmers qualified for high school All-America status and his boys’ team was ranked nationally in 1993. While in San Diego, Rhinehart also served as the founder, head coach and president of the PQ Aquatics Corporation, a United States Swim program, from 1991-95. Before moving to San Diego, Rhinehart was an assistant swim coach in the Ivy League at Brown University from 1984-90. In addition to his duties at Brown, he coached the Little Rhody Aquatic Club, where he developed nationally and internationally ranked swimmers. Rhinehart resides in Rockville, MD, with his wife, Jenny, and their 16-year-old son, Sean.

Assistant Coach Mitch Dalton is in his second season with the Colonials. A native of Australia, Dalton will again assist head coach Dan Rhinehart in all aspects of the GW program. Dalton will continue to lead the recruitment of future Colonials. The 2009-10 freshman class is one of the largest classes the program has signed. When asked about the upcoming season Dalton said, “GW Swimming is entering a new era and I feel so lucky to be part of the program during this exciting time. I truly believe that this school and athletic department are one of the finest in the country. I look forward to seeing GW swimming get to the top of the Atlantic 10.” In his first season with GW, Dalton and Rhinehart guided the team to three Atlantic 10 records, 12 school records, an NCAA “B” cut, and the Atlantic 10 Swimmer of the Year in David Zenk. Prior to GW, Dalton was an assistant coach at his alma mater, James Madison University. While coaching at JMU, his athletes broke nine school records, had an average team GPA of 3.1 and improved their overall W-L record from 1-9 to 8-4. A four-year letterwinner and a team captain at James Madison, Dalton made a name for himself in the Colonial Athletic Association by swimming the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke, as well as the 200IM and 400IM. He was a four-event finalist and scored every year of his eligibility. As a senior, Dalton led the Dukes to a third-place finish, just 20 points shy of the CAA Championship. He still holds top-10 school records in four events.
