1.1 Object The above image showing the process of the digital making, i used intersurfacecurve to create the steel wire inside. For the lef bottom picture, it shows my measurement of the paper lantern i bought, i asked my friend to hold the lantern, so i just use ruler to measure the size. It was not 100% accurate, but i tried for several time, and finally i get the average number.

1.2 Object + System Analyse Paper lantern can be analysed by an skin and bone system. The basic concept it followed is thje helix inside. By enhace the helix inside in order to leg up the ouside surface to achieve the complete shape of paper lantern. The left picture showing the basic form of helix in planform and perspective view. The right picture showing the circular shape of steel wire in paper lantern. This picture inspired me for one of my further design.

1.3 Sketch Design Proposal Below sketches are all design process for my first two model making.

1.3 Sketch Design Proposal --Pysical Model The idea of the design: 1: basic concept: skin and bones 2: singel panels are skin while the steel wire is bone 3: through the two-piece constructio assures volume. Using the different trangular shape and form them together with different shape to make teh volumn of sleeping. Cap is moveble which can fit for the user’s needs.

2.1 Design Development Introduction Due to module 2 was an group work. During the process of design, we looked though all the group menber’s module 1 work and slected what kinds of idea we were going to use. We inspired from the picture of Issey Miyske Cloth, and take one precedent from previous students’ work. Also, we desided to place our model on the desk which means we just consider the upper part of the human body. Our final decision is design a sleeping pod with corrugated card and also fabric in order to achieve our purposes in terms of privacy, security and high comfrotable level.
13
2.2 Digitization + Design proposal Basic idea: - Fit for the upper part of the human body -Ensure the privacy and security (By manipulating the size of weaves, it become gragual bigger from top to bottom.
14
2.3 Precedent Reaserch
Expandable, Privacy, Layers, Protection, Cocoon-like structure
We use the concept as the presedent that is weaves. For the sleepsuit is made of EVA Foam; a flexible material with a soft and cushion-y texture, enabling the user to feel more comfortable inside. The foam is cut into individual sections and then combined together to form a weave-like pattern with gaps in between when the suit is pulled down. The gaps between each section allows the user to see and feel the external environment, however the people outside can only see small segments of the user’s body, because of the wavy pattern created when the sections are attached. Thus, the sleepsuit excels in terms of comfort, sense of security and privacy. The picture on top showing the changing of the waeves based on our own design.

2.4 Design Proposal v.2 For first two crosswise pictures, we desided to use the shape that fit for the human body when people, at rhino, we tied to make the 2d first to find the baisc shape and then using panelling tools to create the texture- the weaves in our design.
For below pictures, due to our physcial mdel is based on the digital mode, we have trided paneling tools to see what kin dof shape we can make and tried to get soem inspiration from it.
16
2.5 Prototype v.1 + Testing Effects We took pictures for different angles of this model to test and see how it looks like and how it effects users in different direction This effect will allow more privacy for the user as people on the outside can look through these sections but cannot clearly distinguish the inside. e user’s identity through the folds. This creates a sense of mystery and disguise, a potential indication for bystanders to leave the person sleeping in peace.

3.1 Fabrication Introduction After we finished module 2, we realised due to the characteristics of fabric, it is really hard to trailor and hard to make teh connection with panel material, so we cannot keeping using it. Aso, for the consideration that the model should be stable by itself, we desided to use transparent palasic card to replace the fabric. Also, for second model, the MDF is too heavy for fabric, so it cannot be stable, we decided to use boxboard to take place it. After we use laser cut to form the shape of each panel, we painted them for good looking for seeking a better appearance.

3.2 Design Development & Fabrication of Prototype v.2
This first three model made with popyproperlene, inside are reansparebt pieces, connected them with clips.
20
This oen was made with fabric and also polyproperlene. But it does not flexible and also did no contain good looks.
This prototype was found to be much more time-efficient as it saves a lot of our time connecting each weave, and also produced a really appealing and effective panelling system when it is expanded open.

4.0 Reflection
During the whole semester, i have learnt so much on these subject, not only in the part of the model making, but also the self adjusting when we face model failure and cooperation between group work. Due to module 1 was an individual work, and in that time, I’m not very familiar with the using of rhino and photoshop theses softwares, so i feel very stressful and struggling with all the work and i didn’t expect that we will have lots of work to do at this subject. However, just because the first one was an individual work, i have to do all the research and drawings, they did offer me lots of ideas that i contributed in or group’s further design. Also, it provides a chance to have my own understanding of the paper lantern. After we finished module 1, we start to think what kind of model we want and what requirements we suppose to achieve. In that time, we put functionality as the priority. All of our design is based on the thinking that how to make people have a comfortable feeling in our design and how this design fit for the human body. Also, we want the design to be special and refreshing. According to these requirements, we decided to use fabric and corrugated card. We first start with the digital model, cause our physical model should be based on it. During this process, Ningxiao and i really think we have leant so much, these kind of digital making experience is useful for our further study. Because of the shape of our design, Maybe due to the quality of the fabric, when we were making model, we face lots of problem. For example, the margin of the fabric doesn’t smooth which makes the physcial model looks ugly. Like teh reading mentioned, it takes lots of making physical and digital mode, but we really rely on it. Also, next time, for making a good outcome, we should finish every step in advance, cuase in the process of model making, lots of new problems will come out. We should save time to fix these problems.
