Founded in 2013, Jeffery Phang Architect is an architecture firm based in Miri, Sarawak, that specializes in design planning and design research. Currently there are 9 people working in the office, including Ar. Phang Siaw Foong, Jeffery, as well as 2 interns.

As part of the team, I get the opportunity to produce working drawings, design buildings, meet clients and have site visits. Sem 5.5 is an approximately 7 weeks internship course that is compulsory. The internship is aimed at introducing us to the requirements, activities and operations involved in working in architectural practices. Our working hour starts from 8am and ends at 5pm, with an hour lunch break in between from Monday to Friday.

On the first day at Jeffery Phang Architect, I read some architecture books and product catalogues. On the second day, I was assigned to produce working drawings in AutoCAD for the proposed petrol filling station on Lot 170, Marudi town district. Despite taken measured drawings course before, there are yet many new drawing details to learn from. I managed to finish working on the elevations while referring to the sketchup model built by my colleague. Then, I was assigned with another task, which is to propose a design for a single storey detached house located in Batu Niah, a small town 110 km away from Miri. I started off with some site analysis before coming out with some conceptual sketches. I also read and noted down some crucial requirements to follow in Sarawak from the book ‘Laws of Sarawak : Buildings Ordinance, 1994’.

On the second week, I continued to amend the detached house floor plan after getting feedback from the client regarding the arrangement of spaces. On Tuesday, I followed one of my colleagues to have site visit at a wood furniture factory. We went to check on the mock up furniture for bloomberg trade required for a project in Curtin University. I observed how my colleague examined the appropriateness of the materials used and the dimensions of every details to make sure it works properly. After finishing with the working drawings for the proposed petrol filling station on Lot 170, Marudi town district, I also helped to amend the ground floor plan of Transframe Lutong Office based on my colleague's on site observation, as there were changes made during construction. I found out that on-site changes were common in order to suit the client’s needs best.

On the third week, I continued in developing the 3D model of the detached house while still familiarising myself with Sketchup. On Monday, I had a meet up with the client of the detached house, Mr Tan in the office, accompanied by one of my colleagues. We had some discussions about the feng shui principles he wanted for his house. It was an eye-opener to me as I didn’t know there were so many principles of feng shui to follow in a house. After the discussion with Mr Tan, I started incorporating the feng shui principles into 3D design as well as amending the floor plan again. The client requested to have a specific dimension of the front door, avoid directly aligned doors, place kitchen stove facing East. To make sure the plan works, I also read some references online to get more knowledge about furniture layout in feng shui before designing windows. I then went to seek some advice from my supervisor after finishing my first model. I followed his guidance and continued to amend the drawings before sending for client’s approval.

On the fourth week, I continued to build my 3D model by exploring with different facade materials to design a grand, welcoming front facade. I then proceeded to rendering stage by using Lumion and Photoshop. I got to learn more new rendering and editing skills. On Thursday morning, I followed one of my colleagues to Bomba site inspection at Sing Karaoke & Bistro in Taman Tunku. I learnt that to apply for Operation Permit (OP), bomba approval is one the pre-requirements to get. There were 3 things the bomba officers came to check if properly installed - keluar sign, emergency light and fire extinguisher. I was then assigned to trace out a double storey terrace house ground floor plan for corner and intermediate lot which will be used for a future development project. I also made some amendments on the spaces arrangement based on my supervisor’s advice.

After the CNY break, I continued on the single storey detached house project. The client came and made some minor changes on the floor plan. I continued playing with different materials and designs on the facade to provide the client some options to choose from. After receiving client’s feedback, I amended the 3D model again. On Thursday, I followed my colleague to Curtin University to see the construction progress of an extension building designed for bloomberg trade. My colleague checked on every details to see whether the works executed were according to the drawings. I realised that it is important to inspect site as many changes had to be made real site construction

On the last week, I was asked to trace the site plan of Lawas Hospital, it is needed for planning approval submission. I was also requested to draw detail section of gutter and downpipe. Other than that, I got to read some tender documents and development control standard manual. Tender documents are prepared for contractors which offers for the supply of goods or services. whereas development control standard manual serves as a guide for designing parking, building setbacks, access roads etc. On Wednesday, the client came and finalise everything one last time before I proceeded to produce working drawings for engineers to calculate the RC columns and beams.

4.0 CONCLUSION
In conclusion, I have learnt a lot during the internship course at Jeffery Phang Architect. Throughout this whole internship, I have been exposed to different projects from working drawings, site visits, tender documents and designing. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude towards Jeffery Phang Architect as well as Ar. Lee Sze Ee for the encouragement and guidance given during my 7-week internship. Under their guidance, I have gained much new knowledge and experience. All knowledge and experience learnt will be very useful to me in the future. I once again thank them for the valuable experience in my academic journey.
