SECTION (WHEN COMPLETELY ROTATED) / Scale 1:2

My chosen object was a paper fan, because of the material paper, it`s really fragile, therefore, photocopying seems is not the best way to draw it. I took a picture of it and arrange the printed picture exactly followed the scale 1:2, and then I can easily trace the picture and get my elevation drawing.

These are three sections` picture I took when the paperfan was in different conditions, different angles of rotating and folding will provide diverse sections.

1. when fully folded (vertically)

2. when half roatated

3. when fully folded (horizontally)

3

Analysis The shaded area stands for the area that been sticked together. Before the two pieces of segments sticked together, the paper was still two-dimensional, after been sticked together, with stretching and dragging, the ses two will be able to make volume.

The paper fan contains 36 same segments, in order to complete the whole fan, the outside should be sticked together for connecting with the next part.

until it been turned to 180

Works as pivot as well, a point to obtain all rotations and in terms of three dimentions, this works as invisible roller

Panel & fold (In terms of paper fan) : - Flexible - Repetitive patterns make volume by folding and sticking - Complex outlook simple mechanism

As the solid line shows on each picture, It`s obvious that the bigger angle the paper fan been turned to, the shorter the height is, and as for the dash line which interprets the width, the bigger the angle is, the narrower the shape turns to.

The shape of elevation changes with the angle changes. And the bigger angle we turns into, the more layers we are able to see in birdview paln.

1. As the fan is an object that contains several identical elements, we can form the whole thing from doing one single element.

Plan

1. In order to reconfigure the object, and also create the volume, for a panel and fold system, twist is an efficient way to do it. However, the original of the fan shape is quite limited, therefore, I cut the connection part of the fan, and change that to a long flat panel first.

2. Instead of simply twisting it, the panel and folding`s flexibility is high, therefore, its possible to form a shape while doing the twist.

I used the right half to form a circular cone and the left side to twist, let the panel to form volume as large as possible.

Sketch Design #1 Twist / Restricted / Connection / Wide coverage What is your idea? [Maximum 5 key words] Inspiration: We sometimes do have situations that need us to be strict and restricted, such as you really wanted force yourself to be quite and study, but without some external restriction, it is hard for us to do that.

Implementation: Arms, eyes and legs are the most basic and also useful parts of the human body system. In terms of personal space, these might be the three elements that requires least personal space since we use these the most to communicate and feel the external world.

Prototype

How does this respond to your personal space? A twisted folding panel paeries to limit several of the most important parts of human body. The wearer will be able to restrict the body`s moving regions, othe words, it`s like set boundaries of human`s acting. This is used in order to narrow the body volume and restrict the actions range when necassary.

Sketch Design #2 Defensive / Extendable / Pivot / Flexible What is your idea? [Maximum 5 key words] Inspiration: From exploring the paper fan, it`s obvious that the position of the pivot point is quite important. Instead of just a single pivot in planar surface, setting more pivots are more possible to create volume.

pivot point

The personal surface of the back requires more than the front.

Back Implementation: The pivots make the sytem more flexible and are able to follow the body`s shape , it also increase the boday volume simultaeneoudly. For example, it`s quite useful to use this when u walking in crowded.

How does this respond to your personal space? As for human is hard to predict the situations behind the back, a series of sharp pointy objects especially for the back is able to be defensive and get rid of sudden attack.

Sketch Design #3 Protective / Thick / Tight / Changeable What is your idea? [Maximum 5 key words] Inspiration: If we analyse the tree, the outlook is like a fan as well. But detaily. the thick tree skin which protects the inner system of tree and the leaves and the branches move when wind blows and sunshine. Therefore, why cannot we create thicker outfit for protecting our inner bidy as well?

Implementation: It`s especially works for female. The middle part which only covers the parts that need to be protected, and the upper part can also be like folding shape to block sunshine or some other instances.

Prototype

How does this respond to your personal space?

A folded panel that can help to protect the private inner body. Thew wearer will be able to control the shape in different situations. Even it is big panel, but it doesn`t look offensive since the panel are designed to tight fit the body.
