Performance Notes: All metronome markings are intended merely as guidelines, and can be adjusted slightly in order to produce a clean performance; in fact, the metronome marking of 112 should be considered the absolute fastest that this piece should be played. In m. 34, a dead stroke is asked for, and is notated with an “X” going through the note-stem, this dead stroke is produced by not lifting the mallets from the bars after the pitches have been struck, as would normally be done. As this piece makes use of the entire range of the instrument, gradually moving from the lowest end to the highest end, mallets selected must be usable throughout the instrument’s range.
Program Notes: In New Mexican folklore, we are warned to make sure all windows are closed at night during a thunderstorm. The fear is that a snake-like bolt of lightning, called la culebría, will sneak in through the open window. I snake my way through tonal patterns, play with rhythm, and make use of sudden dynamic shifts in order to illustrate the uneasiness of a thunderstorm as well as the slithering motions of a snake. The piece is cast in an A-B-A form, starting in the lowest range of the marimba and progressing higher and higher until the piece ends on the highest note the instrument provides. The A-sections feature a play of rhythms with either increasing or decreasing amounts of space between pitches, separated by sudden flashes of sound. The B-section plays with whole-tone, chromatic, and octatonic collections interspersed with staggering and uneven arpeggiation figures that can’t seem to catch their balance or find a familiar pattern. The closing A-section also has moments from material from the B-section makes brief returns, but makes use primarily of expanding or diminishing spaces between notes separated by sudden bursts of energy.
