1. Cité/Mon-repos It is around the Cité hill, sculpted by the Flon and Louve rivers, that the mediaeval town grew. Its cobble-stoned pedestrian streets as well as its monuments bear witness to that. Then, as soon as you cross the Bessières Bridge, the scenery changes completely. The Caroline district possesses a shopping mall, many bars, restaurants and boutiques. A bit further to the east, the Mon-Repos Park offers a green and tranquil haven, interrupted from time to time by the twittering of birds in its aviary. re Bar la

Lausanne Cathedral

Musée historique mudac Located in the Maison de Lausanne

Rues Cité-Devant and Cité-Derrière

The cathedral, considered one of the most beautiful Gothic buildings in Switzerland, was consecrated in 1275. Don’t miss the rose window, the painted portal, the 13th-century choir stalls, the ancient and modern stainedglass windows and the great organs. The bravest will admire the panoramic view from the belfry (entrance fee) after climbing the 224 stairs. Open tours of the Cathedral and free guided tours during the summer.

Within the walls of the Old Bishop’s Palace, this Lausanne historical museum speaks of the town’s rich past and features a famous model that offers an exceptional view of the 17th-century Cité. Temporary exhibitions, inspired by the research conducted on its collections, explore the thousand facets of this heritage. Reopening autumn 2017 after renovation.

These two parallel streets running across the Cité district owe their names (meaning “City in front” and “City behind”) to their position relative to the town until the 19th century. Rue Cité-Derrière was at the outermost point and looked out onto the ramparts, whilst Rue CitéDevant opened out onto the rest of the town to the east. Since then, many artisans, shopkeepers and restaurants have taken up residence there.

Gaudard that encompasses several mediaeval dwellings and a tower with a pointed roof, this space is dedicated to design and contemporary applied arts. You set off on an intense and surprising journey where antique Egyptian and Asian art stands side by side with current designers’ latest creations. The museum organises encounters and themed guided tours, and regularly welcomes performing arts such as dance, music and other types of performances.

Château Saint-Maire Ancienne (Castle Saint-Maire) Académie This building erected during the 14th century is one of the major fortification works dating from the late Middle Ages in the area. It has successively served as a residence for bishops, the seat of authority of Bernese bailiffs and the current headquarters for the canton of Vaud’s government. Renovated by the end of 2017, it nevertheless remains closed to the public. On the Castle Square, take a look at the statue of Major Davel, a hero of Vaud history who rebelled against the Bernese occupying forces in 1723.

(Old Academy) Constructed between 1579 and 1587 on the Cité’s perimeter wall, this building is a rare example of a European Protestant school complex from that period, designed as an Academy, and the first Frenchspeaking one. Educational venue for the reformed intellectual elite, it became Lausanne University in 1890; since 1987, it houses the Cité cantonal secondary school.

7

Escaliers du Marché (Market Staircase) A direct but abrupt route between the Cathedral and the town centre, this wooden stairway first mentioned during the 13th century exists in its present form since the beginning of the 18th century: roofed and winding, with a very steep cobbled street running alongside. An integral part of Lausanne’s popular iconography, it is lined on the west with a picturesque row of boutiques and cafés.

(Charles) Bessières Bridge

Mon-Repos Park

Built from 1908 to 1910 and one of the three bridges overlooking the Flon Valley, it connects the Cité hill to the Caroline neighbourhood. Eugène Jost, its architect, was the designer of the area’s grand hotels, amongst which the Montreux Palace. The view on the Cité is splendid, while looking down you can see the m2 metro line.

Open to the public, it’s one of the most popular parks for Lausanne inhabitants of all ages, with its huge lawns, aviaries of exotic birds, playgrounds and ephemeral sculptures. Stroll down its various alleys to catch a glimpse of an orangery as well as a neo-Gothic tower overlooking a cave and a waterfall.

10

Tribunal fédéral

(Federal Law Courts) In a neo-classical style, this building, made up of two massive wings and a colossal portico featuring four columns overhung by a gable, houses the highest judicial authority in Switzerland. The edifice was built between 1922 and 1927 by architect Alphonse Laverrière, who designed the most important structures in Lausanne in the first half of the 20th century, such as the Chauderon Bridge, the railway station, the Bel-Air tower block and the Bois-de-Vaux cemetery. Palais de Rumine

Bel-Air tower block and Métropole hall

Erected at the end of the 19th century on the Place de la Riponne, this Italianate-style building houses a host of treasures in its various museums of art and science, such as the largest naturalised great white shark, as well as a library valued by the town students.

Under the first skyscraper in Switzerland, erected in 1931, is the newly renovated Métropole hall that hosts shows of all kinds. The nearby esplanade, with a view over the Flon district on one side and the Cathedral on the other, is a favoured meeting place for city dwellers. Make the most of the 360° panorama for your selfies!

Quartier du Flon (Flon district)

It’s the town’s architectural success: this district of former warehouses that begins at the Place de l’Europe was rehabilitated as a living area with a wide array of restaurants, bars, clubs, boutiques, cinema and exhibition spaces. A must is to enjoy a drink on one of the rooftop terraces. In the winter, you can enjoy the ice-rink and in the summer the sandy beach.

Montbenon Esplanade

Grand-Pont and Chauderon Bridges

Collection de l’Art Brut

Built in 1844, the Grand-Pont originally possessed two levels of arches under which the River Flon flowed. Three decades later, the lower level was buried when the Flon Valley was filled. Imagined at the beginning of the 19th century by a team of architects and engineers – amongst which Alphonse Laverrière – the Chauderon Bridge is characterised by its Art Nouveau style. It connects, on the one side, the Montbenon district with, on the other side, that of Beaulieu. These two structures offer remarkable points of view on the Cité, the Flon district and, in the distance, the Jura range.

The town created this museum unique in the world in 1976 in exchange for the legacy of 5,300 works of outsider art belonging to artist Jean Dubuffet. Located opposite the Beaulieu Palace, this institution owns today over 60,000 works, 700 of which are displayed permanently, and exports its exhibitions all over the world.

Making the most of one of the town’s most beautiful openings on Lake Geneva and the Alps, you can lounge on the lawns in front of the District Court or enjoy a meal on a terrace. If it’s raining, you might like to visit the Swiss Film Archive in the Casino de Montbenon.

3. Train station/ouchy The neighbourhoods located between the Ouchy quays, by the lakeside, and the Lausanne train station invite you to a stroll. They unveil several green oases, elegant Belle Epoque dwellings bordering broad avenues and two internationally renowned museums. Since 2008, the rubber-tired m2 metro has replaced the “Ficelle” (the “String”), which was in 1877 one of the first metropolitan railways in the world. B

Lausanne train station

Boulevard de Grancy

The current station, built between 1911 and 1916, replaced the original one dating from 1856. The main train station in the Canton of Vaud, it is characterised by the prominent Olympic rings that identify Lausanne as Olympic Capital, a grand awning of metal and glass covering the platforms, as well as a huge hall that serves as a meeting point. Transformations are under way and a refurbishment project is planned for the Place de la Gare.

The boulevard de Grancy, the only one in Lausanne, attracted families of the great bourgeoisie as from the end of the 19th century. It became a very lively street with cafés, market stalls and boutiques of all kinds. You can still see some traces of the past at the Château de Grancy, a former mansion with several turrets. On the wall opposite, rusty rings are a reminder that there still were a thousand horses in the town a century ago.

3

4

Crêt de Montriond Promenade and place de la Ficelle (The Ficelle walk) de Milan With its vast lawns, football fields, playgrounds, fountain and shady alleys, this square inaugurated at the end of the 19th century drew families at all seasons. Reach the Crêt de Montriond by a winding path to discover a 360° panorama of the town, Lavaux vineyards, Lake Geneva and Alps.

Also called Coulée verte, the Ficelle walk, named for the former metro line of which it follows the track, forms a unique, gently sloping link between the train station and the lake. The construction of the m2 metro enabled the creation of this exceptional green area, entirely pedestrian and accessible with a pushchair. You begin the walk at the boulevard de Grancy and finish on the shores of the lake.

Denantou Park Initially privately held then open to the public in 1928, this park was laid out during the 19th century in the English fashion by a banker. Allow your children to caper about in the wild meadows surrounded by copses, flower bed displays and statues, or to play with the water from the pond. Since 2007, a Thai pavilion with a golden roof adorns this green area; it was given to the town by His Majesty the late King of Thailand in thanks for the years he spent in Lausanne between 1933 and 1951.

6

Elysée Museum and gardens This thirty-year-old museum, one of the first to be entirely dedicated to photography, gained its international aura thanks to the quality and originality of its exhibitions in Lausanne, then exported all over the world, as well as the dozen complete collections and archives, amongst which those of Charlie Chaplin, Nicolas Bouvier and Ella Maillart. Don’t miss its new discovery space, The Studio, dedicated to young visitors and families. The beautiful mansion, that welcomed Mme de Staël in 1807, is surrounded by a French formal garden laid out in terraces with a spectacular view over the Alps and Lake Geneva.

7

Olympic Museum and Park Unique in the world, The Olympic Museum forms Lausanne’s main cultural attraction. Each of its three levels is dedicated to a particular aspect of modern Olympism, largely featuring new interactive communication media. You may need several visits to explore everything. In any case, a pause at the Tom Café is welcome, with its terrace on the uppermost floor that offers a splendid view on Lake Geneva and the Alps. In the park, admire the collection of sculptures and test your speed on a proper running track. Strolling through the landscaped terraces, you’ll reach the monumental fountain on the shores of the lake.

Ouchy quays

Place de la Navigation and Ouchy port

Cruises on a Belle Époque or solar boat

Inaugurated in 1993, this concourse has pools to refresh you during the hottest summer days and a countdown clock marking time until the next Olympic Games. A market is held every Sunday from April to September. Children can have fun on the acrobatic course and merry-go-round, while adults play chess on the giant chessboards painted on the ground. The Ouchy marina, dominated by a mobile sculpture, adjoins the landing pier for the boats of the Compagnie Générale de Navigation.

It’s impossible to leave Lausanne without having sailed on Lake Geneva aboard one of the Compagnie Générale de Navigation’s vessels. In addition to crossing the lake to the French shore, its Belle Époque fleet – the largest in the world – takes you on board for a gourmet cruise. From May to September, you can sail closer to the coastline on board the solar-powered boats Les Aquarels du Léman, to observe the fauna and flora noiselessly.

It’s one of Lausanne citizens’ and visitors’ favourite Sunday walks. Whether you are on foot, riding a bicycle or sporting wheels, come and stroll along the quays inaugurated in 1901, richly adorned with trees and flowers. From the false ruin of the Haldimand Tower to the Château d’Ouchy – now a luxury hotel – to the landing pier, Ouchy port and Bellerive swimming pool, this path runs alongside three parks. The walk can be continued to the east towards Lutry and to the west up to Saint-Sulpice.

Bois-de-Vaux Cemetery

Vallée de la Jeunesse

It’s one of the most beautiful cemeteries in Switzerland, imagined by Alphonse Laverrière in a neo-classical style and perfectly maintained since its completion in 1946. It’s not rare to meet walkers dawdling by its rows of trees and by the side of one of its pools, or who come to visit the graves of famous figures such as Coco Chanel or Pierre de Coubertin.

This place of cultural and creative awakening, offering entertaining and varied activities for young and old, is a legacy of the 1964 National Exhibition. It includes a gently sloping path, a terraced rose garden, an ingenious playground, a course for skateboarding and rollerblading, as well as a centre focused on the discovery of science and technology.

Signal de Sauvabelin

Sauvabelin park and lake

Sauvabelin tower

A former funicular terminus, the Signal de Sauvabelin offers a lovely glimpse of the town and enables you to identify summits on the horizon thanks to an orientation table. In the Middle Ages, people were posted there day and night to maintain a lookout and raise the alarm in case of enemy attack. A pile of wood was ready to be burned to give warning.

Created in 1888 in the heart of an oak forest, the Sauvabelin lake rapidly became a soughtafter strolling area for Lausanne people. You can rent a small boat during the summer or walk along its shores. The surrounding park is very popular with children, who discover unusual animals such as woolly pigs, grey cows, booted goats and mirror sheep.

This tower built of solid, local wood in a spirit of environmental respect is one of the many destinations for a hike above the town since 2003. Enjoy the 360° view from a height of 35 metres after climbing the 151 steps of its double spiral staircase. Free access.

LUTRY

Dominated by the vineyards listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, this mediaeval village still bears traces of its past in its picturesque lanes: a castle, churches, towers, etc. During the summer, many terraces on the quays invite you to relax, as do the vast lawns on the lakeside. 1

Lutry Temple The Lutry Church is the successor to an 11th-century Benedictine convent. Only the vault of the entrance porch remains of the original Romanesque style. Dating back to 1577, the painted

inside vault constitutes a curiosity of national interest thanks to its splendour and the fact that it is one of the rare examples of painting in the Italian Renaissance style executed after the Reformation. www.lutry.ch

Did you know? In 1984, during the construction of a car park west of the old village, 24 standing stones originating from the end of the Neolithic age (about 2,500 years BC) were discovered.

57

Pully

The town is comprised of three sectors. Les Monts-de-Pully and Pully Nord extend down to the Chantemerle Church area. The town-centre is structured around the Prieuré Church and buildings. In the south is the Pully Port sector where, on summer days, a miniature train runs. Nearby, the Pully-Plage swimming pool, a favourite destination for families, offers a spectacular view on the lake, mountains and neighbouring France. 2

ArchéoLab Located in the centre of Pully town, the ArcheoLab is an interactive and recreational hub to discover archaeology through experimentation. Geared mainly towards children and families, this space unique in

Switzerland lets them become archaeologists and travel through time. In the heart of the remains of a Roman villa, you’ll experience in a lively and entertaining way the daily life of people in past times. www.pully.ch

Did you know? “ Swiss writer Charles Ferdinand Ramuz” lived part of his life in Pully; he died in 1947 and rests in the town cemetery.

58

Saint-Sulpice

On the shores of Lake Geneva and close to the university campus, this village is bordered by the Venoge and Chamberonne rivers. A residential area, it offers the walker beautiful lawns and areas suitable for bathing.

3

Saint-Sulpice Church This Romanesque church by the lakeside was built in two stages by Cluny monks during the 11th and 12th centuries. The nave was destroyed during the 18th century, but the chevet with its

three Romanesque apses remains. Admire the chancel decorated with magnificent frescoes dating back to the 15th century. Classical music concerts are regularly organised there. www.st-sulpice.ch

Did you know? The inhabitants of Saint-Sulpice are called the Serpelious.

59

Bussigny

Located west of Lausanne, this municipality offers two facets with, on the one hand, the heart of the village made of prettily renovated rural buildings and, on the other, a bustling retail and artisanal activity nearby. Walk up to the Protestant church’s esplanade: the view from this hillock lets you appreciate how close you are to the countryside and forest. 4

Venoge river With the Sorge, it’s one of the rivers bordering the territory. A pleasant walk begins below the train station and allows you to complete a 30-minute loop along the Venoge, then a

canal. Would you prefer a longer trail? Walking downhill, follow the waterway’s peaceful meanders right down to where it flows into Lake Geneva at Saint-Sulpice. You can picnic on one of the many little beaches along the way. www.bussigny.ch

Did you know? Bronze medallist at the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, judoka Sergei Aschwanden grew up in Bussigny.

60

Chavannes-près-Renens Part of the university buildings and two renowned strategic economic poles are located in Chavannes. Resolutely turned towards the future, the town has recently undertaken planning projects that ensure respect for the environment and improve the quality of life. 5

Sports centre The sports centre is one of the largest in Lausanne. It is equipped with the facilities necessary to host competitions at all levels.

It includes football, rugby, baseball and American football fields. www.chavannes.ch

Did you know? It’s in this town, between 1924 and 1974, that the Villars-Perrier chocolate factory produced the famous “Têtes au choco” (chocolate-covered soft-peak meringues). Nowadays, this building houses a real cauldron of artists and artisans.

61

CRISSIER

West of Lausanne, this town is mainly known by Lausanne people for its shopping area. That should not make us forget the pretty village of Crissier set in a bucolic landscape with vineyards, old buildings, a castle that hosts every year a festival of blues music, a belfry and a world-famous restaurant. 6

Restaurant de l’Hôtel de Ville Crissier In the middle of the village stands a world-renowned temple of gastronomy with more than 40 years of history. Legendary chefs have followed one another in its kitchens: Fredy Girardet crowned Chef of the century in 1989,

Philippe Rochat who obtained three Michelin stars in 1998 and Benoît Violier, named Chef of the year when he took the reins of the restaurant in 2012. Franck Giovannini took over from the latter after his tragic death in 2016. www.crissier.ch

Did you know? The Restaurant de l’Hôtel de Ville Crissier was designated best restaurant in the world in 2015 by “The List”.

62

Ecublens

Its motto – “Ecublens, town and countryside” – suits it perfectly. The old Motty village, built on a moraine of the old Rhone Glacier and enjoying a panoramic view of its surroundings, is made of renovated farmhouses. Yet the opening of two new hotels since 2013 shows the vitality of this municipality that welcomes, since 1970, the Lausanne Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) and a large part of the Lausanne University buildings. 7

Motty Church Erected on the Place du Motty, the Reformed church overlooks the whole territory of Ecublens. According to the specialists of the Canton of Vaud architectural census, the first construction of this

building can be traced back to the mediaeval era. Altered many times, the edifice has retained a window from 1532. In all likelihood, the belfry and its two bells go back to the mid 19th century. www.ecublens.ch

Did you know? The free SportCity Tour app enables you to discover various trails in Ecublens while exercising.

Romanel-sur-Lausanne Of its rural past, there remain ancient farmhouses in the heart of the village, as well as a number of agricultural, market produce and arboricultural holdings outside Romanel-sur-Lausanne’s territory. The latter also welcomes several commercial areas, industries and companies that settled there in the 1970s and 1980s, attracted by the proximity to Lausanne and the low price of the land. 8

Lausanne–Echallens–Bercher railway (LEB) Since 1874, the Romanel station is one of the stops along the Lausanne–Echallens–Bercher railway line that connects the town with the countryside. The LEB was the first Swiss metric railway (i.e. narrow and unique track). Nicknamed

“la Brouette” (the wheelbarrow), this train soon to be transformed into a regional rapid transit system takes you to the countryside from the town centre four times an hour. www.romanel-sur-lausanne.ch

Did you know? After the product was dropped in 1990, the Romanette lemonade, made with water from the local Providence source, was launched on the market again in 2014.
