Welcome! Facing the Alps, on the shores of Lake Geneva, Lausanne is the fourth town in Switzerland. Growing and changing, it maintains its human dimension, respectful of its natural setting. Olympic Capital, city of culture, a major training and research hub, abounding in rich historical heritage, Lausanne is an urban centre that radiates far and wide. Our walks, original and varied, showcase these characteristics. Surrounded by green landscapes, welcoming towards the countryside and vineyards that flank it, open towards neighbouring France and only half an hour by boat from Evian, Lausanne is well worth a visit. Completely relaxed, with plenty to please your eye, allow yourself to be guided in Lausanne’s streets and parks. Its contrasting relief will appeal as much to the athletic as to the contemplative: in Lausanne, each to his rhythm. Every one of our suggested walks – Olympic, on the lakeshores, in the mediaeval city or in the vineyards – is tailored to your interest and desires. Steeve Pasche, Director

Old Town Walk
Delve into the historic centre The Cité hill, crowned by the Cathedral at a height of 542 metres, gives Lausanne its unique character. From the Old Academy, first French-speaking faculty of Reformed theology, to the Château Saint-Maire, the town’s open-air architecture bears witness to its mediaeval past. Go-to restaurants, small cafés, a scattering of boutiques and three antique bookshops enliven the neighbourhood. Step down the picturesque Escaliers du Marché to reach the Place de la Palud. In front of the Town Hall, you’ll join the milling crowds on market days – a century-old tradition. Access (public transport): Starting point: Arrival point: Duration: On the way:
Bus N° 16, “Barre” stop; m2 metro, “Bessières” station Place du Château Saint-Maire (under repair) Tour de l’Ale, close to Place Chauderon. Buses N° 4, 6, 9, 16, 17, “Chauderon” stop Approximately 2 hours Wednesdays and Saturdays, from 8am to 2pm, produce from the surrounding countryside is on sale at the street markets. Save your high heels for the evening. Meanwhile, wear comfortable shoes to wander the Cité’s pedestrian streets.

Both a residence and a donjon, topped with Italian-style bricks, the Castle now houses the Cantonal authorities’ headquarters. Its massive sandstone walls are soft to the touch. (Closed to the public and under repair) This former faculty of theology created by the Bernese as from 1537 became the first Frenchspeaking Reformed academy in Europe. Today, it still serves as a place of learning for students aged 16 to 19.
6
→ Escaliers du Marché
7
→ Place de la Palud
→ Cathédrale (Cathedral)
A majestic edifice turned towards the lake and mountains. Constructed between 1170 and 1275, the Cathedral is considered the most beautiful Gothic building in Switzerland. As of old, a night watch calls out the hours between 10pm and 2am from the top of the belfry.
→ Ancien Evêché (Bishop’s Palace)
8
This entirely wooden and covered stairway is a compulsory passage. A direct link between the upper and lower part of the Cité, its steepness will reward you by whetting your appetite or helping your digestion. This is the age-old mercantile heart of Lausanne. Standing on the steps of the Fountain of Justice, in front of the famous clock that displays animated scenes every hour, take in the beautiful perspective on the adornments of the 18th-century residences’ façades.
→ Hôtel de Ville (Town Hall)
Although imposing, this 18th-century building is welcoming. Its roof recalls the opulent homes of wealthy landowners from the Swiss countryside. Closed to the public; however, its ancient covered market is an exhibition space.
This complex of buildings that make up the former Bishop’s Palace was the seat of the bishops’ power in the Middle Ages. Undergoing renovation and closed until September 2017, this place of memory is an appropriate home for the Historical Museum.
9
→ Église Saint-Laurent (Church of Saint-Laurent)
→ mudac
10
→ Tour de l’Ale
This dwelling, named after bailiff Gaudard, is a place of contrast since its thick walls house the “mudac” museum, a forum for exchanges and encounters between designers, stylists, architects and artists. Decorative and fine arts are displayed there.
This baroque church also serves as a seating place for passers-by enjoying a rest or picnicking on its steps. Its elegance gives character to the popular square that bears its name. About fifty towers and gates defended Lausanne. Only one still stands: the Tour de l’Ale, saved by a people’s movement unconvinced that all should be sacrificed to car traffic.

Family Walk
In Lausanne, there’s always something to do For families, Lausanne offers a multitude of activities for all ages and the town is dotted with playgrounds and parks. The more athletic tackle the town’s sloping topography: on foot, mountainbike, roller-skates or cross-country skis, Lausanne is a dream come true for active visitors. And when the rain comes – or just a longing for culture – museum doors are open. Nourishment for the mind and body. Access (public transport): Starting point: Arrival point:
Is it too far? Had enough pushing? Public transport to the rescue. t-l.ch/en More information on www.lausanne-tourisme.ch/family

Children and adults alike delight in this spot, with its lake, geese, restaurant and terrace. In the surrounding forest, the wooden Sauvabelin Tower offers a unique panorama over Lausanne from its 35-metre height – or 302 steps! Ten minutes on foot from the town, the leafy, romantic park contains many varied species of trees, the most famous of which is the weeping beech with its interwoven, sinuous branches that conjure up a fairy tale house. The museum is worth a visit in its own right. Located in the town centre, this Florentine Renaissance building houses the cantonal museums of archaeology, fine arts, geology and zoology. A green haven of tranquillity in the heart of the town, this park harbours a 19th-century landscaped garden and a popular aviary. The ideal place for a timeless moment while the children run around.
→ Place de Milan
A patch of countryside in the midst of the town, the Place de Milan has something for everyone. A lawn for a lazy siesta, a playground, a huge sand pit and, nearby, the Botanical Garden.
10
9
Extending the Olympic Museum’s gardens, this magnificent park slopes down gently towards the Ouchy quays. In addition to featuring the Thai pavilion (a royal gift), it is a superb testimony to the Lausanne countryside of long ago. In Lausanne, all roads lead to Ouchy, its landing pier and terraces that call to mind the Riviera. A holiday atmosphere seems to pervade, both by the lakeside and in the playgrounds. Since 1937, Lausanne citizens take refuge at the Bellerive-Plage swimming pool on hot summer days. Diving, idling and swimming extend the summer against a backdrop of lake and mountains. A unique experience. Sports reign in Vidy, with its two stadiums: Pierre-de-Coubertin and Juan-Antonio-Samaranch. You can play football, hockey, beach-volley, skate bowl and basketball, as well as enjoy street sports, a “Vita” fitness trail and the educational Sports Track.

→ Post 1. Gare de Lausanne (Lausanne train station)
2
→ Post 2. “Belle-Époque” residences
When it was built in 1850, Lausanne train station was surrounded by vineyards. Today, it is part of the town and 120,000 people use it every day. A piece of advice: look carefully at the monumental clock. This small square, with its green benches surrounded by pine trees, is a privileged post to observe the neighbourhood. On the other side of the street, can you spot the group of houses dating from the beginning of the last century? Look carefully at the roofs.

5

7
→ Post 7. Les anneaux olympiques
The Olympic Museum first opened in 1993. Pierre de Coubertin, father of the modern Olympic Games, came up with the idea as early as 1915. Two statues of colourful football players are catching your eye. (the Olympic rings)
From the Délices station, you can see the train station. Watch the landscape behind. Just so you know, this automatic metro line was inaugurated in 2008 and was the first in Switzerland. From one station to another, here you are at Jordils. The now underground metro line isn’t new. An open trench was dug in 1877 for the old metro known as “La Ficelle” (“The String”). Have you noted the presence of an unusual building in the area?
Lausanne is a green town. A few metres from the Beau-Rivage Palace, the enigma focuses on four conifers of the same family. Allow the Mediterrean atmosphere to envelop you and the answer will come readily.
At a turn in the path in the Olympic Park, you’ll see three cyclists immortalised by a sculptor. Take a closer look at their mounts and count the wheels carefully. 8
→ Post 8. Murets gravés sur le quai (wall engravings on the lakeside)
A long time ago, the lake water came up to the other side of the road. Read the inscriptions engraved on the wall that delimits the quay, dating back to 1901. How many are there? That’s it, you’ve reached the last post. Now you just need to read the completed mystery sentence to find the treasure on foot. That’s where you’ll be able to answer the enigma!

Writer Georges Simenon bought 200 pipes and purchased his special Dunhill blend there. Every week, the father of Inspector Maigret entrusted to the shop 12 pipes to be cleaned that he then smoked while writing. On September 15 1766, a young pianist aged 10 and a half gave a resounding concert in the Town Hall’s council chambers. That prodigy, at the time on a great European tour, was no other than Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. (Closed to the public.) This hotel has always enjoyed the graces of aristocrats from all over the world. The King of Thailand spent his youthful years there. The Spanish royal family was faithful to it for a long time, electing it as one of its privileged retreats.
In the peaceful atmosphere of the Beau-Rivage Palace, a few words written in the establishment’s guest book attest to how Lausanne attracts the most diverse personalities: Ayrton Senna, Coco Chanel and Phil Collins’s words echo yet older visits: Victor Hugo or Gary Cooper. In 1816, the very romantic Lord Byron, then aged 28, stayed on the shores of Lake Geneva. His writings inaugurated the golden age of tourism in the area. In Ouchy, he lived on the water edge, at the Angleterre Hotel. In 1964, visitors of the Swiss national exhibition dived in the waters of Lake Geneva aboard the Mesoscaphe, the world’s first tourist submarine. It was invented by oceanographer Jacques Piccard, father of balloon pilot Bertrand.

In the extension of the Flon, in a former industrial wasteland, the Théâtre Sévelin 36 and the Arsenic constitute the hot spot of choreography in all its contemporary forms. A glance at their programming would allow you to end your walk with a show. Well-known companies and associations also keep dancing alive and growing there. During the 1930s, music hall had found a home in the Métropole Hall, at the base of Switzerland’s first skyscraper. Threatened by ruin, it was brought back to life in 1992 when the Béjart Ballet Lausanne chose that venue for its first performances outside the Beaulieu Theatre. The Beau-Rivage Palace is one of the sponsors of the Prix de Lausanne. Great names in dance have walked its marble floors. The most famous are showcased in a photo gallery inspired by the signatures in the establishment’s guest book. A great Ukrainian dancer and choreographer, Serge Lifar died in Lausanne in 1986. On the Quai Delamuraz in Ouchy, a metal sculpture immortalises Icarus’s flight, in memory of the eponymous ballet that established Lifar as the first leading dancer of the Paris Opera, during the 1930s.
In the trendy district of the Flon, you can dance until the early hours. With its four dance floors, the 10 → IMD park MAD – elected best Swiss club in 2014 – has been the temple of electronic music for the past 20 years. Along the Avenue de Rhodanie, south of the IMD business school, a plaque pays tribute to Serge Diaghilev. Olympic Walk
The not-to-be-missed spots in the Olympic Capital Not for nothing is Lausanne Olympic Capital. On Lake Geneva’s shores, baron Pierre de Coubertin found a neutral and idyllic setting to defend the restoration of the Olympic ideal. Close to 300,000 visitors come every year to the Olympic Museum, a marble building that blends into the landscape. Beyond that, the whole town resonates with the legacy of the Games. In competitive sport, the starting signal is given at zero. The clock that counts down the time remaining until the next Olympic Games, in its setting of Jura limestone, is a reminder that Lausanne is headquarters to the IOC since 1915 and Olympic Capital since 1994. It is within these ancient walls and overlooking the lake that the first conference of the Universal Pedagogical Union, created by Pierre de Coubertin in 1925, was held in 1926. The Olympic spirit blows on the lake. The recently renovated museum is a journey through the Olympic movement’s history, from antiquity to the present day. It also pays tribute to great champions and houses the world Olympic documentation centre.

Architecture Walk
Discover Lausanne’s architectural heritage and future look In Lausanne, the built heritage offers an architectural panorama from the Middle Ages to the noughties. From the end of the 19th century to this day, building has been in phase with modernity’s key stages. Thus, ten monuments bear witness in a spectacular manner to the town’s cultural ambitions and the image it has of itself. Each of these objects characterises the urban landscape or will characterise it in the decades to come. Although some are at the project stage, their architectural impact is nonetheless significant. With its emblematic skyscraper, this urban complex was built between 1929 and 1932 by architect Alphonse Laverrière. Worth discovering: La Miroiterie, Les Pépinières, Les Cubes, L’Arbre et ses raciness and, as from the summer 2017, the refurbished garages for artists and craftsmen. Inaugurated in 1909 and newly renovated, this luxury hotel that seems to come straight out of a fairy tale is worth the trip, particularly to contemplate its monumental mosaic frescoes and imposing Belle Époque façade. An essential part of Olympism, the Maison du Sport International is an icon of modern architecture in Lausanne. Designed by Bernese architects, this building adds a sculptural dimension to the Vidy landscape. Erected in place of a former factory, Geopolis serves as a landmark for Lausanne University’s campus, as well as a link with EPFL; yet it is also a remarkable symbol of the southern entrance to the town of Lausanne. With its invisible pillars and gentle undulations, this building, signed by Japanese architectural bureau SANAA, functions both as a laboratory for learning and a library with 500,000 volumes. Long and narrow, this recently opened building is the work of Japanese architect Kengo Kuma. Accessible to the public, it encourages visitors to immerse themselves completely in the concerts of the Montreux Jazz Festival before relaxing at the Montreux Jazz Café at EPFL. At the other end of the building is an exhibition devoted to big data. Amongst the most modern and best equipped convention centres in the world, this building shows both technological and architectural audacity, confirming EPFL’s decisive role in the urban landscape.

Outings on the water
Experience a multitude of nautical and aquatic pleasures Lausanne is also a port town. On the pleasant Ouchy quay, built in 1901, step aboard one of the Belle Époque fleet vessels belonging to the Compagnie générale de navigation (CGN). Along the Swiss or French coasts, Lausanne is never far away and it’s a pleasure to return there on the way back from one of the leisure or gourmet cruises offered by the CGN. Other aquatic trips are possible: on an Aquarel solar-powered boat or on La Vaudoise, a lateen sail boat. Lakeside Walk
Wonderful relaxation on the shores of Lake Geneva Two thousand years ago, Lausanne settled on the waterfront. Today, its well-preserved green shores are still delightfully attractive. Whether developed or wild, the lakeside puts on a show of the town's best offerings: sports, nature, history and leisure. From St-Sulpice to Lutry, a footpath hugs the coastline almost without interruption. On a small pebble beach or on the busy Ouchy quays, Lake Geneva makes Lausanne a home port.
Access (public transport): Starting point: Arrival point: Distance: Duration: On the way:
m1 metro, “UNIL-Sorge” station Port des Pierrettes, bus N° 701 from Bourdonnette, “Champagne” stop Lutry, bus N° 9, “Voisinand” stop 10 km Approximately 2 hours and a half Never losing sight of the lake, take the time to stroll whatever the season, in fair or stormy weather, in this magnificent landscape.

With its fishermen's huts and small holiday cottages, this port invites you to escape. All the lake birds cohabit peacefully here.
Around 15 B.C., Romans stopped in the area. Deciding it was a promising location, they settled here, creating the city of Lousonna. In the 4th century, the Teutons migrated to the Cité, moving the heart of the town away from the shores.

8 EMBOUCHURE DE LA VUACHÈRE
Previously, this romantic tower built in 1823 was located on a island. Today, this sentinel marks the end of the Ouchy quays. The walk continues on a footpath along the waterfront towards Pully. (Mouth of the Vuachère river)
The only Lausanne river that remains close to its natural state, the Vuachère flows into Lake Geneva. A small wild paradise on the edge of the town. Pully, all aboard! At the marina, old freshwater sailors rub shoulders with young racers and famous yachtsmen. If you'd rather stay on firm ground, you can enjoy a ride on the miniature train.
In Lutry, the mediaeval village was the first stage on the route to the Alps. Its old rooftops contemplate the lake serenely. From the beach – a hugely popular spot in the summer – you'll enjoy a beautiful view on the Alps.
Lausanne to port, the Alps to starboard. Yet some are hard at work here, with boats dredging the shallows and transporting building materials, perpetuating an ancient tradition.
FONTAINE OLYMPIQUE
A striking monument facing Lake Geneva and the Alps, this fountain indicates the presence of the Olympic Museum, invisible from the lakeside. Tourists enjoy having their picture taken, eyes aglow with the beauty of the view.

Built in 1901, Ouchy quays have long been a beloved spot for Lausanne inhabitants. In summer as in winter, people come here for a family walk, a romantic stroll, to enjoy an ice cream or a typical cheese fondue.

The great Lavaux Trail UNESCO World Heritage vineyards
From the Olympic Museum to Chillon Castle, the 32-km long walking trail offers a wealth of sensations. Starting with the walk, eight and a half hours through Lavaux and its terraced vineyards, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in the category “Cultural Landscapes”. To the satisfaction of the physical exertion is added that of discovery. From village to village and through vineyards, an educational itinerary reveals the region’s eight designations of origin, with wines that are gaining an international reputation. Along the way, grape varieties and the notion of “terroir” (set of special characteristics linked to the geography, geology and climate of the area) become more familiar. Following the seasons, walkers can observe the work carried out in the vineyards. For those who wish to discover Lavaux in stages, each designation has set up a circuit and a secondary itinerary. Adventurers setting off on the great trail follow the signposts with the GT abbreviation. Located in strategic spots such as train stations and landing piers, these signs and other indications are supplemented with blue vineyard trail signs. www.lavaux.ch/fr/parcours.htm

Along the way, in a mediaeval setting, comic-strip fans will understand why Corto Maltese, Hugo Pratt’s hero, has his own statue in a winegrowers’ village, gazing out on the lake and mountains. Hugo Pratt, a giant of comic strips, fell under the spell of this winegrowers’ village where he lived surrounded by books. Through his famous character Corto Maltese, a statue and wine cellar pay him a panoramic tribute.
The Lavaux vineyard was landscaped in terraces, with close to 450 kilometres of walls in total. The stones, coming from screes, give the region its unique character.
