10 reasons
to choose Lausanne for your event
Easy access
Diversity of hospitality infrastructures
As Switzerland’s fourth-biggest city and capital of the Canton of Vaud, Lausanne enjoys a privileged geographical location at the centre of Europe. It is easily accessible by train, car, boat and aeroplane, being situated near Geneva International Airport (40 minutes) and Zurich Airport (2 hours 30 minutes).
Different venues make it possible to host any type of congress or event, ranging from a new modular congress centre – the only one of its kind in the world – to a seminar room in a palace, not to mention less traditional places such as a château, a concert hall, a boat or a museum.
Research and excellence
Efficiency of public transport
Lausanne is known for its internationally renowned institutions of higher education (University, Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, IMD, Lausanne Hotel Management School, etc.) and centres of medical research, not to mention the presence of numerous multinationals. The region thus offers an ideal environment for the organisation of international conferences, medical conventions and business meetings.
With a compact bus network and two metro lines, journeys in Lausanne are quick and easy. What’s more, every hotel guest is given a Transport Card entitling the holder to free public transport throughout his or her stay.
Olympic Capital The International Olympic Committee, the Olympic Museum and more than 40 international sports federations and organisations have chosen to be based in the Olympic Capital, the only title of its kind in the world. A variety of prestigious events featuring the world’s elite athletes are staged every year.
Idyllic setting Situated by Lake Geneva, the biggest lake in western Europe, and surrounded by vineyards, countryside and forests, Lausanne benefits from an enchanting backdrop with spectacular views of the Alps. It makes an ideal point of departure for excursions lasting several hours or longer.
Sustainable development
A tradition of hospitality
Sustainable development represents one of the most important targets of political development in Lausanne. Soft mobility, energy management, waste sorting and ecotourism are environmentally friendly schemes that you will be able to incorporate into your event.
Lausanne’s hotel sector offers countless options, ranging from boutique hotels to a palace, as well as hotels full of charm and an international hotel chain. In terms of gastronomy, Lausanne is one of the wealthiest regions on the continent and boasts a record number of award-winning chefs.
City of culture and leisure
Swiss reliability and security
The sheer variety of attractions makes it easy to organise diverse social activities and team-building exercises. Not to mention the hundreds of cultural and recreational events that feature on Lausanne’s calendar.
Like other Swiss towns, Lausanne benefits from a stable political environment and a climate of safety much appreciated by business travellers. Performance and reliability, Swiss values par excellence, characterise its different infrastructures.

Lausanne, the guarantee of a successful event Lausanne boasts numerous assets, which its urban marketing campaign has brought together under four beacons of excellence: education and research, sport, culture and sustainable development. Close to Geneva International Airport, the city also benefits from modern amenities that make it one of the top-ranking destinations with expertise in staging congresses and events. The statistics bear this out: two out of three tourists come to Lausanne on business, whether individually or to attend an organised event. The Olympic Capital has been able to profit from the presence of colleges and internationally renowned centres of medical research, from forty or so international sports organisations and federations, and from the establishment of numerous multinationals to develop its business tourism. The latter now benefits from a stimulating intellectual, scientific and economic environment. The organisation of professional gatherings is facilitated by efficient infrastructures, including congress venues, a diverse range of hotels providing over 5,000 beds, an efficient public transport network and attractive programmes for accompanying persons. In addition, the Convention Office attached to Lausanne Tourisme benefits from a team of specialists capable of organising all or part of your project to cater for your individual requirements. The city of Lausanne makes good use of its capacity for innovation and enterprise by continuously improving provision so as to meet the expectations of the most discerning event organisers and business tourists. Its hotel capacity will increase substantially by 2015 due to the enlargement of some establishments and the opening of new hotels. The congress and exhibition centre operated by MCH Beaulieu Lausanne has been completely renovated and the Swiss Tech Convention Center (due to open in April 2014) built on the campus of the Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne is a world first in terms of its completely modular construction. Not to mention the improvements planned for public transport services. Welcome to Lausanne, the ideal destination for your event!

L
ausanne chalks up over one million overnight stays in hotels every year thanks not only to
the diversity and manageable size of its hotels, but also to the development of its business tourism. This is why substantial financial investment is allocated to enhance existing provision and to develop it by opening new, ultra-modern establishments. The 1,000 extra beds planned for 2015 will enable the growing needs of business tourism to be met, bearing in mind that this currently accounts for two overnight stays out of every three.

Lausanne Tourisme took care of all the hotel room bookings and were responsible for organising our conference dinner. We were particularly impressed at their willingness to listen to our needs and to adapt according to our suggestions. Together, we pioneered a new concept for an evening experience at the medieval Château de Chillon, something that we can warmly recommend for other conferences in the future.

«
I am very much impressed with all the possibilities Lausanne and surroundings have to offer. I was also impressed with the service hotels are offering with regard for instance to the free public transportation they offer to their guests. And the free wifi in different places in town. You can really sense that Lausanne welcomes its guests, which gives a great feeling.

Hotels in the pipeline In order to cater for the growing number of events and conventions being held in Lausanne and for the increasingly exacting requirements of the organisers, substantial investment has been made in recent years with a view to improving and expanding what Lausanne offers in terms of infrastructures for conventions, transport and hotel capacity. Several hoteliers, for instance, have recently modernised and enlarged their establishments. Various projects for new hotels are also in progress. By 2015, the hotel sector in Lausanne will see the number of available beds increase by more than 25% compared with 2012.

Conference venue provision at a
ÂŤ
In order to highlight the assets of Lausanne and the surrounding region, an event organiser must be able to rely on a team of professionals who combine expertise, local knowledge and experience: Lausanne Tourisme had a good grasp of the objectives I was pursuing and was able to give me the sort of effective advice and support I needed to ensure that the organisation of the Forum was a success.

CE0212 Station 1 1015 Lausanne Tel. +41 21 693 42 68 Fax +41 21 693 21 24 nathaly.bauer@epfl.ch www.tstcc.ch In 2014, the Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne will open the world’s first fully automated congress centre. The Swiss Tech Convention Center has seating capacity for a total of 3,000 people and comprises a large 2,205-seat auditorium, a 795-seat balcony and fifteen or so break-out rooms on the ground floor, all of them fully modular. With futuristic technology for events that are an effortless combination of flexibility, modularity, openness and simultaneity, this centre showcases what the convention industry demands today and tomorrow. It is endowed with revolutionary patented technology, allowing seating to be retracted at the touch of a button. Swallowed up by an intelligent floor, the seating thus gives way to a flat surface. Unforgettable evenings
Enterta Did you know that Lausanne is home to more than twenty museums, thirty or so theatres, several dance companies, an opera house, a ďŹ lm archive, festivals and hundreds of events throughout the year?
39
S
teeped in history, the Lausanne region offers a wide choice of medieval castles,
manor houses and other exceptional sites in a rural or vineyard setting. These places, most of them listed national heritage sites, lend a unique ambiance to your event and will leave a lasting memory. Some of them offer to combine gastronomy with their speciality: museums, schools, boats, a salt mine, a covered market and a high-altitude restaurant will organise your

ine is inextricably linked with the history of the Pays de Vaud and its four wineproducing regions, two of which surround the city of Lausanne: Lavaux, a UNESCO
World Heritage Site, and La Côte. The City of Lausanne is the biggest public vineyard owner in Switzerland and has five estates. Its wines have been auctioned off in December every year since 1803 and are served at numerous tables in the canton and its capital. Lovers of good vintages will also enjoy visiting the wine bars in the city or sampling them in the cellars of the region’s winemakers.

The “Route du Vignoble” (vineyard route) rally
In the heart of the old town of Vevey beside Lake Geneva, the Alimentarium is the only museum in the world devoted exclusively to the human diet. You will have the opportunity to take part in interactive cookery workshops to test your senses and learn the different ways in which meals have been prepared down the centuries in various cultures. The café-restaurant can be hired for cocktails.
A vintner will introduce you to a range of wines from a wine-producing estate and pair them with other local products or tasty morsels in the form of an informal workshop. Pairings are possible with chocolate, cheese, tapas, sushi, risotto, sorbets and a variety of gourmet delights.
Treasure hunt in Lavaux
This orienteering competition takes you among the vines to search for clues that will help you to discover the secret location where an aperitif of the local wines will be served.
Different service providers and restaurants offer you an opportunity to participate in cookery workshops, which generally involve producing a full menu with several recipes. Menu themes vary depending on the season and the event organisers.
The Route du Vignoble (vineyard route) offers you a unique, lively and prestigious evening that allows you to play on real casino tables turned into gaming and tasting tables. To round off the event, you participate in a fictional auction and use the tokens you have won to buy a number of lots put together by your host vintner.
A demonstration of the traditional art of chocolate making in a laboratory and tasting of cocoa from a variety of sources. Making their own chocolates will enable participants to learn about the different techniques used to create chocolate moulds and pralines.
Working in teams, participants discover the region and solve riddles off the beaten path in a wine-themed treasure hunt. It is possible to liven up the “produits du terroir” (local products) clues with different clues of a more sporty nature, or to organise a gourmet walk during which the meal is eaten at the different stages of the event.
Competition on the art of winemaking Set in the winemaker’s museum in the La Côte vineyard, you will take part in a fun competition in which you have to identify all sorts of tools and objects related to the cultivation of vines and wine production. Prizes awarded to the 3 winners.
Teambuilding “SEWA Beats” percussionists
Percussion instruments are increasingly being used to enliven conferences, personnel development courses and team-building exercises. Inhibitions melt away as participants allow themselves to be carried away by the music to create a collective synergy.
Vini Challenge
Held in the form of a competition, these mini-Olympics combine several activities requiring agility and concentration on the subject of winemaking.
Lausanne Safari
This treasure hunt gives teams the opportunity to enjoy an unusual walk discovering the treasures of Lausanne. Riddles are used as an appealing and original approach to subjects including history, architecture, art, prominent people with links to the region, customs, the art of living, gastronomy and unusual features. The programme concludes with the preparation and presentation of exploration notebooks in which the participants report on what impressed them and what they experienced together. Option of refreshments or gourmet break.
Olympics of the 5 senses
The programme is a “trendy” stroll from workshop to workshop as we rediscover our 5 senses. Divided into teams, the participants have to identify original smells, aromas, materials and brief and varied sounds without falling into the trap of visual illusions.
City discovery
Fun and educational treasure hunts organised in teams will allow you to discover various aspects of Lausanne: animals, history, sustainable development, sport, arts and sciences, etc.
Theme park Parc Aventure
In a parkland setting, the different sites of Parc Aventure are particularly suitable for group outings. Equipped with a safety harness, you will swing through the trees in absolute safety. Various challenges provide an exciting experience for participants. It is possible to eat on-site. Open from April to October.
FunPlanet
The only one of its kind in Switzerland, this indoor 10,000 m2 complex situated at the end of Lake Geneva in the direction of Valais offers you a multitude of activities: bowling, karting, billiards and video games as well as Switzerland’s first Race Café (simulators) and Goolfy (mini-golf).
Labyrinth Adventure
This is the biggest permanent maze in the world. Having found your way through 18,000 thuja trees along a route measuring 3 km, why not let yourself be swept away by a giant slide more than 30 m high? Various attractions such as a climbing wall, tunnel, treasure hunt and orienteering competition make this expedition the ideal outing for groups and incentive trips. Open from March to November.
Aquaparc
Open all year round, this water park is a truly tropical oasis beside Lake Geneva. Over 1,000 m of slides converge in the pools, which are heated to 29 °C. In summer, the park provides special access to a sandy beach, the only one on the shores of Lake Geneva.

Introduction to curling
Team members are given a brief explanation of how a sailing boat works and what happens in a regatta. Once on board the boats, each team member will take part in the manoeuvres on the orders of a professional skipper. This is an activity in which each person assumes responsibility and interacts with teammates to attain a common goal.
Treat yourself to a flight in a two-seater paraglider on the Riviera and Lake Geneva. Fully qualified professional pilots will enable you to experience the pleasure of flying in complete peace and safety.
Activities on Glacier 3000
Not only during the winter, but also during the summer, Glacier 3000 offers a large variety of activities in a spectacular setting of the eternal snow. Besides hiking and skiing, the experience of the unique snow bus taking you on a ride over the glacier and a dog sled ride can be organized, also as teambuilding experience. The more adventurous may have a ride on the Alpine Coaster - the world’s highest bobsleigh track.
Water sports
Several group activities are organised on various bodies of water. River rafting is a feasible option for anyone, whilst wakeboarding and water skiing on Lake Geneva make for an invigorating outing!
Beside a stretch of water, the teams must organise themselves to take on a double timed challenge: construct a raft from limited resources in the fastest possible time, then board the raft as a full team and row along a marked route as quickly as possible. The activity is accompanied by a guide and a rescue boat.
The World Cycling Centre caters not only for the world of sport, but also for companies, associations, clubs and organisations seeking an original and unique venue in which to combine work, sport or recreational activities, introductions, cocktails, meals, guided tours and teambuilding exercises. This is an opportunity to discover track cycling or BMX under the guidance of qualified instructors and in the company of champions.
Golf
The Lake Geneva region has four golf courses that are easily accessible from Lausanne. Imagine a course in a dream setting with views of the Alps and Lake Geneva. As you follow the trajectory of the little white ball, your gaze will be lost in breathtaking scenery.
In this type of boat, which is of Chinese origin, the paddlers sit side by side in pairs and face the direction of travel. At the front of the boat, the drummer beats the drum to set the pace. The helmsman, in the rear, keeps the team on course. The teams must cover a short distance several times.
Learn how to play this traditional team game under the watchful eye of an expert. To succeed, you need to be smart and have some technical understanding of the sport and, above all, a sense of fair play and good team spirit.
Skis, luge and snowshoes
There are 100 km of ski slopes with access to three valleys and a glacier in the Villars area. Torch-lit descents can be arranged. Other winter activities can be enjoyed here, including snowshoe walks with or without a guide and a downhill ride of over 7 km on a luge (also available at night after sharing a fondue).
Other activities Cultural, technical and professional visits can also be arranged in various museums, schools and industries. Please contact us for more information!
