TurNing Tower Urban Hoursiing Design Sep.2014- Dec.2014 New York, NY, US University of Pennsylvania Studio III: ARCH 601, Fall 2014 Instructor: Jonas Coersmeier

The TurNing Tower is a 94m buildings with 12 duplex stories. It stands between Highline Park and 10th Ave, looking at the entire super block ”London terrace”.

The First TurN Urban strategy - Connection N Tower-Bridge Design Through the public space at the ground level of the tower and the semi-open gallery at the highline, the architecture is able to blend into highline park, creating a smooth connection not only to bring people from the park, but also prevent them from entering the neighborhood along the 10th Ave. Meanwhile, the fluctuation of the bridge helps to eliminate the drop from the highline to the site. The bridge was able to form the ground landscape between the 24th St.and 23rd St. as well as the space under the rail, introducing people to the site through the landscape. The node on bridge is also the set-back of the block, acting as the coutyard of the entire project.

The Second TurN Unit aggregation - Hierarchy N Two types of mutually independent units share a public workshop space, creating three housing types. By interlocking with each other as one integral unit, they are able to start aggregating. The open and private balconies are set in diversity. They link with the open and private circulation cores as major entraces, in substitution of traditional horizontal stacking floor slabs. The third TurN Structure - Nesting and weaving N Three kinds of structures interweave and nest together: the primary structure is the solid concrete with metal wraps. Metal railings and window frames are the secondary structures. Finally, soft metal wires are fabricated together and becomes the tertiary structures.

Have adults interact with children. children physically turn “hard” gradually during growth while adults mentally turn soft when they participate children’s activities.

OVERCOMING HARDNESS WITH SOFTNESS The Health Center design Jan.9.- April.2013 Philadelphia.PA.USA University of Pennsylvania Studio II: ARCH 502,Fall 2013 Instructor: Catherine Bonier

The growth of a child is actually a process when their social skills and physical conditions gradually become stronger and harder. Children’s health care and education are also developed aiming at the growing process. Furthermore, we are eager to be rejuvenated in adults’ mentality with the growth of ages since the soft simplicity of children are becoming the treasure of a society in people’s growth. Strong adults are present at the place where there might not be children in it, but guards and leaders could follow children, start to be involved in children’s life. In my project, children is the starting point as they will be the major service objects. Meanwhile, they will also be the core to center all the related programs so as to expand the programs to the adults. The intention is to soften all the adults mentality when they are taking care of the children.

DANCE WITH SHACKLES The performance place design Nov.8.- Dec. 2012 University of Pennsylvania Studio I: ARCH 501,Fall 2012 Instructor: Josh Freese

We are all born with shackles. At first, we are limited by too many factors: the rigid rules, the old habit, the idol ... Then, we try to struggle in our life, facing our limitation and develop our potential, we follow the signal and decode the fate. “ ... man is something that must be surpassed. —That man is a bridge and not a goal...” (Thus Spake Zarathustra) Finally, Dionysus is calling, he throws the cloak of dream and inebriation around us which keep us from being ruined by the truth. We begin to create the future of our own, we sing as we want and dance as we want. Now, we break through the gate, leaving the twilight of the idol behind and welcome the dawning of the freedom.

We choose “protection” out of two considerations: one is the mercy upon the protected; the other is the guiltiness about human’s selfishness. Chuang-Tzu:Nature has spectacular beauty but never boasts. Bird is the sign of the forest, and there’s no better place than the forest for them to live in.

7

Thus, it is not my priority to seek a certain form or its function. Just like a sculpture at a certain place, I make a nest for anyone who’d like to live in.out of consideration of nature concervation and humanism, following Master Hong Yi,who created the painting album Protection of Life,I name it “Nest Protecting Life” to let people cultivate their compassion and mercy upon life.
