GARDEN NO GARDEN - GRDEN DESIGN
Feb.- Mar.2012 University of Pennsylvania LARP 502,Spring 2012 Project Location: Bridesburg.Philadelphia.PA.USA Instructor: Karen M’Closkey Designer: Jie Xu Tasks: Free Hand Rendering, Physical Modeling,Montage
This is a garden lying at a fork in the road. The zigzag path runs through the meadow slope with undulating X and W-shape. Meadow grows in sparsity, blurring your eyes: She is glistening yet shaded, she is enchanting yet gloomy; Meadow sprawls, obscuring the path: She has brushed past but is yet to come, she has arrived but has already gone. What you see is invisible, what you pass is not a road. No matter how you choose to depart, There was ever a garden, here, there was never a garden, here.
N Plan 1"=40' N
This is a garden lying at a fork in the road. At the confluence of X and W-shape meadow slope, is where you fall in deeper and deeper. The ground under your feet is gradually above and hide you away; You come with the light while flee away in seeking the light. No matter how you choose to depart, there was ever a garden, here, there was never a garden, here.
This is a garden lying at a fork in the road. No matter which way you take, there are two paths to leave: One exit is called remember, another is called forgetting. No matter how you choose to depart, there was ever a garden, here, there was never a garden, here.
MONTAGE WORK- LOST
THE REGION WAS KNOW IN COLONIAL TIME AS POINT- NO-POINT,DUE TO THE DECEPTIVE APPEARANCE OF THE BLUNT CAPE AT THE MOUTH OF THE CREEK.WHEN FIRST SEEN GOING NORTHWARD IT APPEARED TO BE A POINT,BOLDLY JUTTING OUT INTO THE STREAM AND UPON COMING NEARER,IT LOST ITS CHARACTER AND SEEMED TO BE AN ORDINARY PORTION OF THE RIGHT BANK; ON FURTHER APPOACH IT SEEMED TO AGAIN JUT OUT INTO A POINT.

DANCE WITH SHACKLES - THE PERFORMANCE PLACE DESIGN Nov.8.- Dec.2012 University of Pennsylvania ARCH 501,Fall 2012
Instructor: Josh Freese Designer: Jie Xu
We are all born with shackles. At first, we are limited by too many factors: the rigid rules, the old habit, the idol ... Then, we try to struggle in our life, facing our limitation and develop our potential, we follow the signal and decode the fate. “ ... man is something that must be surpassed. —That man is a bridge and not a goal...” (Thus Spake Zarathustra) Finally, Dionysus is calling, he throws the cloak of dream and inebriation around us which keep us from being ruined by the truth. We begin to create the future of our own, we sing as we want and dance as we want. Now, we break through the gate, leaving the twilight of the idol behind and welcome the dawning of the freedom.

THE CHARM OF ZEN - SCULPTURE
Dec.2008 Excellent work prize of the 3rd student birdhouse competition 2008 Project Location: Shanghai,China Instructor: Hui Li Designer: Jie Xu Tasks: Free Hand Rendering, sculpture
Working Process
Phase 1
The Charm of Zen Relevant Conception: Taoism’s freedom & Buddhism’s Mercy We choose “protection” out of two considerations: one is the mercy upon the protected; the other is the guiltiness about human’s selfishness.
Phase 2
Chuang-Tzu*: Nature has spectacular beauty but never boasts. Bird is the sign of the forest, and there’s no better place than the forest for them to live in. Thus, it is not my priority to seek a certain form or its function. Just like a sculpture at a certain place, I make a nest for anyone who’d like to live in. out of consideration of nature concervation and humanism, following Master Hong Yi*, who created the painting album Protection of Life, I name it “Nest Protecting Life” to let people cultivate their compassion and mercy upon life.
Phase 3
*Chuang-Tzu A famous anciant chinese taoist philosopher. He greatly influenced the history of China. *Protection of Life The painting album of cartoon series, produced by Master Hong Yi, a famous Buddhist in the early 20th century, and his student Feng Zikai, whose gist is to publicize benevolence of Buddha Dharma and the thoughts of stoping killing and protecting life.

Rorschach (born Walter Joseph Kovacs) is a fictional character and an antihero of the acclaimed 1986 DC Comics miniseries Watchmen. His mask displays a constantly morphing inkblot that is based on the ambiguous designs used in Rorschach inkblot tests.

COLORFUL DAY - PANTING MACHINE DESIGN - ANIMATION
PART 1
Sep - Nov. 2012 University of Pennsylvania Visual Study,Fall 2012
MODEL In part 1, I was interested in the different rotation derived of composed gears .Based on the mechanism of Ferris Wheel and Planing Machine,I created this painting machine. Although a lot of gears could offer various rotation, but it also has the limitation of the direction of rotation and it seems antiquated and heavy.

In part 2 in order to make the machine clean, light and flexible while enlarge the painting area driven by the rotation from the whole body. I used the structure of Rubic’s cube to replace the gears. And array the unit to make it organic.
