ACKNOWLEDGMENT This book is a collaborative effort of the ESP 103 teaching team Dr. Kerri Cissna, Dr. Greg Dern, David Eyman, Dr. Molly Holinger, Jim Johnson, Beth Troy, and Geoff Zoeckler - and the First Year Integrated Core (FYIC) Director, Dr. Rebecca Crews. The process of making this book is unique to the FYIC and Entrepreneurship (ESP) Department, derived from seven years of teaching thousands of students the principles of creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurial thinking. The philosophy of always improving will lead to ongoing revisions of this text. Our team would like to, first and foremost, thank our generous donor, Diane Drewery. Without her generous support, this book would not have been possible. We are excited to bring an updated, Farmer School of Business creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurial thinking model to our students, and Diane helped us meet this goal. Our team would also like to thank all of their families who offered their support throughout this process. Our team would like to thank the Dean of the Farmer School of Business, Dr. Jenny Darroch, and the Chair of the ESP Department, Dr. Tim R. Holcomb. We are grateful for your unwavering support. Finally, we would like to thank all of our students. We are honored to work with you. You are the inspiration to continue to improve this course and the program.

introduction Welcome to the First Year Integrated Core (FYIC) and ESP 103: Creativity, Innovation, and Entrepreneurial Thinking! Entrepreneurship is best learned through experiential methods, and creativity is something you must have experience with, through practice. You can’t learn to swim from a textbook, and it's the same for entrepreneurship! The word “entrepreneur” originates from the French verb, entreprendre, which means “to do something,” “to take on risk,” “to initiate/start/begin.” Over time, the word entrepreneur has become a noun, referring to someone who undertakes a project and creates something new, bearing most of the risks and enjoying most of the rewards. An entrepreneur is commonly seen as an innovator, a change agent, a source of new ideas, goods, services, and/or businesses. Entrepreneurship is the process of discovering new ways to combine resources in order to solve a unique problem. The content and activities in this book supplement the course content you’ve been reading, by allowing you to fully engage with creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurial thinking in a meaningful way. This solidifies the learning and allows you to transfer its application to real life scenarios. Creativity is a habit that you can strengthen by being in action. Just like you would go to the gym to build muscles that make you stronger, cultivating creativity takes commitment, time, and focus. Once you strengthen these creative muscles through the creative problem solving process, you can apply them to all areas of your life to create more meaning and purpose for your family, work, community, volunteer organizations, and society at large.
