Autumn Issue

Autumn is here and I can feel the air getting chillier, the crisp leaves under my feet and a whole lot more… mud! We had a very hot summer this year, so the wet weather is rather welcome.

I get so excited for the change of seasons and what this new chapter of the year brings. We’ve got our autumn menu in the restaurant, so expect to see more warming dishes compared to the light ciabattas and salads we served in summer.

As it’s our 20th anniversary this year, I have published a book about how we transformed from a pig farm to the wildlife park you see today! It’s been a bumpy ride, but even during the lows I have never regretted it. e book is coming out very soon, in October, and you can buy a copy from e Farm Shop!

One thing I am so happy about is that our Su olk Punches are back! Annie and Annabelle both had their foals at the Su olk Punch Trust in Woodbridge where they were looked a er round the clock. Now the foals are older and stronger, they are back and enjoying meeting everyone. Why not pay us a visit and meet these majestic, rare breeds?

Our sta are getting ready preparing for Halloween, and we’ll have talks on such as ‘Meet the Spooky Bugs’ and our favourite sheep Pebbles (don’t tell the others!) will don her spooky wings and greet everyone.

We can’t wait to share this autumn season with you on our farm and wildlife park, and I hope you join me for this wonderful season. Grab your mac and boots, and come and share the good life!

Alice and Arthur, our domesticated Bactrian camels who have been at Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park for a few years now, have become parents to a gorgeous calf, Audrey.

Domesticated Bactrian camels’ wild counterparts are the only truly wild camels le on the planet, and are classed as ‘Critically Endangered’ on the IUCN Red List of reatened Species.

Commenting on Audrey’s arrival, General Manager Stevie Sheppard (pictured with one of our beautiful Su olk Punches) says: “It was a very worrying time at the start when Alice was in pain and we had to step in to feed the calf. I’m so glad Alice recovered quickly and stepped into the role of mum like a natural. It’s a joy to watch them play as a family when I drive into work!”

This striking mammal has two humps, which it uses to store fat that can be turned into energy when it has to go without water or food, unlike a Dromedary camel which has just one hump.

IN NUMBERS

They can drink as much as 57 litres in one go – being in the hot desert is thirsty work!

In the wild, there are thought to be between only 600 and 1,000 Bactrian camels left –they can be found in Central Asia, Mongolia, and China in deserts with rocky surfaces.

They can live up to 40 to 50 years.

Bactrian camels are on average 7 ft (2.13 m) tall with their head and body length ranging between 7.3-11.3 ft (2.25-3.45 m).

These camels can walk for 25 to 30 miles each day, but Dromedaries can notch up 100 miles!

We have a wonderful new pig enclosure in the woods!

e woodland provides the perfect, enriching environment for piggies as they have space to roam and forage. ey also help the ecosystem by clearing the undergrowth for plants to grow and thrive. Our pigs have had piglets too so make sure you visit and see their cheeky faces.

About me: Born and raised in Essex, I have been an avid filmmaker and have had a love for animals my whole life.

How I became a content creator: I studied filmmaking at both college and university level, and after my degree I chose to pursue a career in the business.

Why I love my job: I get to work every day in a profession I love and feel like my skills develop further because of it, plus working alongside the animals is just a massive bonus!

Favourite animal/s at the park: I absolutely love the capybara – I had never seen one in person until I started working here!

About me: I’m originally a Suffolk girl; I moved away while I studied at university, but now I’ve finished, I moved back home. I can focus on my career as a photographer and content creator.

How I became a content creator: I started through my passion of photography, but I’ve always found myself on social media and knew that I wanted to learn more. However, I ended up with a desk job in London, but after a few months I realised that it wasn’t for me – that I need to be more active and creative, and Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park gives me the opportunity to do that.

Why I love my job: I always find myself scrolling on Instagram or TikTok, and I’ve always had a passion for animals. When I was younger, I wanted to be a zookeeper but only to sit and cuddle all the animals! I love to capture every moment I can and share it – with my job now I can do all the above.

Favourite animal/s at the park: A bit of a strange one, but I love alpacas – but since working here and having the chance to see the little piglets, they may have changed my mind.

It’s been one hell of a journey!’

This year sees the 20th anniversary of Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park, which started out as a farm for rare breed pigs in 2002. Tales from Jimmy’s Farm celebrates the journey that Jimmy and his family have found themselves on over the years, and the many animals that now call the farm home.

Jimmy, tell us what your new book is about!

In my new book, I’ll talk you through how my childhood dream of owning a wildlife park became a reality. In the 20 years since I bought the once derelict farm, we’ve had some highs and lows, but the main thing is we’ve managed to have a laugh throughout it all. From pink tractors to escaping meerkats, guinea pig village and rowdy reindeers. It’s been one hell of a journey and the craziness continues every day!

How did you nd the experience of writing it? What were the best and worst parts for you?

It was a very nostalgic experience as you can imagine, re ecting on the years gone by and thinking of my standout memories. It’s all gone so, so quick – the years just y past. It’s also excited me, looking forward to what the future will bring.

What main thing would you like people to take from the book? is book is a story of development and I really hope it inspires people to live out their dreams. It’s better to try something, and it fail, than never try at all. Nine times out of ten, if you are passionate about something you will succeed because you have that re in your belly to keep going despite all the setbacks.

I also want people to take away the stories of the animals, and the people, that are featured along the way because everyone has shaped our journey and played a part.

Do you have a favourite animal that features in the book? Steve McQueen, the escaping meerkat, has to be a favourite of mine. He kept escaping his enclosure and we all couldn’t believe how o en he got out – hence the name Steve McQueen! He’s thankfully got a brand-new enclosure now that’s escape proof!

Just a er I nished writing the book, Alice and Arthur, our Bactrian camels, had a baby – Audrey. It’s hard to tell if a camel was pregnant, so although we had our suspicions, we weren’t entirely sure. Audrey is just incredible to watch and knowing Alice was pregnant during writing the book is lovely to think.

A ense adventureof

As latest research highlights the positive mental health bene ts for children of playing adventurously, it’s more important than ever to get outside!

Children who spend more time playing adventurously have lower symptoms of anxiety and depression, and were happier over the rst Covid-19 lockdown, according to new research.

A study led by the University of Exeter asked parents how o en their children engaged in play that was ‘thrilling and exciting’, where they might experience some fear and uncertainty.

e study, published in the Child Psychiatry and Human Development international scienti c journal, comes at a time when today’s children have fewer opportunities for adventurous play out of sight of adults, such as climbing trees, riding bikes, jumping from high surfaces or playing somewhere where they are not seen.

e research sought to test theories that adventurous play o ers learning opportunities that help build resilience in children, thereby helping to prevent mental health problems.

Outdoors

Examples of adventurous activities that don't cost anything are:

• Going for a torch walk in the dark

• Exploring woods

• Camping out overnight

• Paddling in a river or lake

• Jumping from a swing

• Trying out new skills on a skateboard, rollerskates or cycling

• Creating obstacle courses inside or outside

Outdoors

With funding from a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship, the research team surveyed nearly 2,500 parents of children aged 5-11 years. Parents completed questions about their child’s play, their general mental health (pre-Covid) and their mood during the rst Covid-19 lockdown.

e research was carried out with two groups of parents: a group of 427 parents living in Northern Ireland and a nationally representative group of 1,919 parents living in Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland).

Researchers found that children who spend more time playing outside had fewer ‘internalising problems’ – characterised as anxiety and depression. ose children were also more positive during the rst lockdown.

e e ects were relatively small, as would be expected given the range of factors that a ect children’s mental health. However, results were consistent even a er researchers factored in a wide range of demographic variables including child sex, age, parent employment status, and parent mental health. e study in the Great Britain group also found that the e ect was more pronounced in children from lower income families than those growing up in higher income households.

Helen Dodd, Professor of Child Psychology at the of the University of Exeter, who led the study, comments: “We’re more concerned than ever about children’s mental health, and our ndings highlight that we might be able to help protect children’s mental health by ensuring they have plentiful opportunities for adventurous play. is is really positive because play is free, instinctive and rewarding for children, available to everyone, and doesn’t require special skills. We now urgently need to invest in and protect natural spaces, welldesigned parks and adventure playgrounds, to support the mental health of our children.”

Dan Paskins, Director of UK Impact at Save the Children, adds: “Every child needs and deserves opportunities to play. is important research shows that this is even more vital to help children thrive a er all they have missed out on during the Covid-19 restrictions. More play means more happiness and less anxiety and depression.”

What are your earliest memories as a child of experiencing nature?

My parents have always been keen environmentalists and passionate gardeners. I used to love helping Mum and Dad with all sorts of jobs in our garden at the weekends, and I have very strong memories of regularly collecting handfuls of worms! I used to spend ages deciding which member of the worm family was which and naming each one.

Did you always dream of becoming a TV presenter and what was your first big break?

I absolutely did, yes. When I was about nine years old, I had to write about my ambitions for my English homework.

I stated in it that I either wanted to be a children’s television presenter or a dancer, so I have been very fortunate to have landed my dream job.

You’ve worked non-stop in children’s TV since 1999 – what do you love most about it?

Being a children's television presenter is a true privilege and a position that comes with great responsibility – it’s something I have never taken for granted or taken lightly. I really hope that some of what I do provides inspiration, as well as entertainment, for our young viewers. It would make me really happy to know that I might have encouraged a young person to challenge themselves by trying out a new activity, one that perhaps takes them out of their comfort zone and brings some new excitement and joy into their lives.

Presenting children’s television is so much fun, it has given me the opportunity to travel to the most wonderful places, meet the most incredible people and I really pinch

myself when I think about all the unbelievable things that I can now say that I have experienced.

You’ve made many programmes over the years – what’s your proudest project or moment?

Making four series of the programme

‘Naomi’s Nightmares of Nature’ for CBBC really tested me to my limits; the production team challenged me to face some life-long fears and threw me in at the deep end, often literally, in almost every episode. I am happy to say that I didn’t turn down a single challenge that they set for me, but I am most proud of the fact that this programme gave me the opportunity to conquer my enormous fear of sharks. From being a young girl who was too fearful to step toe inside an aquarium, to becoming a woman who has been swimming with

seven different species of shark, all over the globe, without a cage… I give myself a pretty big pat on the back for that!

You must be incredibly busy – how do you like to spend your spare time? One of my favourite things to do is to tap dance; I’ve danced since I was about three, so singing and dancing is in my blood. I love surfing, but sadly I don't get to go as often as I would like… I am not especially good at it, but I just love being in the waves; it is, without doubt, my happy place. I can regularly be found bingeing on a good box set, I am a massive fan of going to watch a musical at the theatre, and I can while away many a happy hour bee and bird watching in my garden.

You’re involved with several charities, most notably as the long-standing president of the Young People’s Trust for the Environment (YPTE) – what are its aims and what would you like your legacy to be? The YPTE is a charity that encourages young people’s understanding of the environment. It aims to give young people clear and balanced information on a wide range of environmental issues, including climate change, plastic pollution, deforestation, and endangered species. This enables them to make informed decisions about how to live their lives in a way that gives greater priority to the preservation of the natural world.

And as for my legacy, woah that’s a tough one. One of my favourite quotes, and one that has always stuck with me, is from Senegalese forest engineer Baba Dioum. He said, “In the end, we will conserve only what we love, we will love only what we understand, and we will understand only what we are taught.” So, if my work allows me to guide and encourage any child to understand, and in turn, love and conserve the beautiful wildlife that we are lucky enough to share this planet with, then it will all feel worthwhile.

environmental knowledge and making my jaw hit the floor when presenting shockingly sad statistics back in 2001, when I first attended YPTE events, but yes, young people have absolutely become more and more clued up as the years have gone by. It’s pretty hard to ignore young, passionate environmentalists when they lay out their research in the form of an impressive, engaging and persuasive school project.

What are some of the easiest ways children can get involved in doing something for the environment? Encourage any children that you know to sign their school up to Surfers Against Sewage’s ‘Plastic Free Schools’ campaign. When you look into the amount of plastic that just one school can produce in an average week, it’s easy to see how each school making some relatively straightforward changes can really make a difference. Perhaps your children would like to take part in a local litter pick or beach clean to play their part in

preventing more plastic from ending up in our oceans. And then seeking out plastic-free and natural swaps around your home can do great things to help reduce the amount of waste we are all producing, and at the same time it helps to eliminate all sorts of unnecessary and harmful chemicals from your life, which in my opinion can only be a good thing for yours and your children’s health.

What projects are coming up for you that you’re particularly excited about?

I have just finished filming Series 2 of the drama series ‘Princess Mirror-Belle’, the TV adaptation of Julia Donaldson’s magical stories, so that will be shown on CBBC later this year. I’ll be in panto this Christmas playing Belle in Beauty and the Beast in Redditch (come and see us if you are in the area) and keep a look out for our Frozen Planet II BBC Live Lesson where your children will be able to join us live from their classrooms this September.

Jimmy’s on a (spring) roll!

Jimmy Doherty has been unwrapping some oriental culinary secrets in Channel 4’s latest series of Food Unwrapped.

In ‘Jimmy’s Asian Adventures’, he visited China to nd out how soy sauce is made, and what makes the di erence between light and dark varieties.

Travelling to ailand, Jimmy unrolled the mystery behind how spring rolls are created and discovered what makes sticky rice so, well, sticky.

On a visit to India, Jimmy uncovered why turmeric is in a lot more of your food than you realise. And nally, in Sri Lanka, Jimmy cracked the case of what makes coconuts so popular.

After delaying their wedding date by a year due to the pandemic, Camilla and Matt finally tied the knot with a ceremony and celebration that was hugely personal to them –surrounded by family, friends and our fabulous park animals!

Tell us about the proposal; was it expected, discussed or entirely spontaneous?

It was very much a surprise a er being together for 10 years. Matt took me away to one of my favourite places, Brighton. He proposed on Brighton Pier, placing the ring very dangerously on top of the chocolate ake on my ice cream!

What made you choose Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park for your big day?

It ticked all our boxes. It had a lovely, relaxed country vibe, a beautiful barn, the option to have a BBQ for our wedding breakfast and, best of all, a tour of the animals!

When did you start to plan your wedding, was your partner involved in the planning or did you both instinctively know what type of wedding you wanted?

We started to plan about six months a er getting engaged – summer 2019; we both had similar ideas of what we would like and were very much looking for an informal day with lots of music and colour.

How was planning your wedding during the pandemic? Did you have to move date and did you get support?

We had to postpone the wedding by a year in the end; it should have been October 2020. It was disappointing and frustrating not knowing when we could start planning again. All of our suppliers and Jimmy’s were very supportive and exible throughout. Everyone was in the same boat and didn’t know what was going to happen next. I’m glad we were nally able to have the wedding we had planned with all our friends and family around us.

Tell us about your ceremony – was anything special to you as a couple incorporated?

We wanted a fun, engaging and personal ceremony and our celebrant was fantastic! We wanted a couple of our favourite songs to get everyone involved and sing along to, and the suggestion from Michelle to create an ‘anniversary box’ during the ceremony made it extra special. We placed our favourite bottle of wine and a love letter to each other in the box, and plan to open it and read the letters on our first anniversary.

How was your wedding breakfast? What was on the menu?

We wanted a full-on BBQ feast as we love having these at home. Steak burgers, ribs and the utterly delicious pulled pork doughnuts went down a treat with our guests!

What did you do to make your wedding personal to you both?

We personalised it through music. We sang two of our favourite songs during the ceremony. Our first dance song was in no way a traditional wedding song, but it’s a song/band that we both love, so we chose it anyway (My Chemical Romance – Welcome to the Black Parade). We also found an amazing indie rock band to play all our favourite music in the evening.

What was your most memorable part of the day? Dancing with friends and family to our favourite tunes all evening!

Where did you have your evening reception and what entertainment did you have? Evening reception was in the barn. We had a DJ to kick off the dancing followed by The Indie Killers band who rocked the night away.

Where did you go on honeymoon or what do you plan to do?

We stayed at Seckford Hall Hotel & Spa for a few days to relax and plan to go to Iceland for our belated honeymoon later this year.

What was your favourite wedding purchase?

My dress! It was so much fun finding the right one and I’m so glad I went with my gut and wore something colourful!

How to Plan the Perfect Event

Lucy Pembroke, our new Weddings & Events Manager, joined at the beginning of July

bringing over 30 years’ experience organising events. She is very excited about the potential of the Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park site and is planning to develop a varied annual events programme, which she will be sharing in the Spring 2023 edition.

Here she shares some of her top tips...

1. Do your research

Start your research well in advance and take your time – if you are theming an event, don’t be afraid to allow your idea to evolve. There are lots of free online resources available; Pinterest.com is a great resource in creating a theme or finding a central idea you can work around. Canva.com also has amazing free templates for invitations and posters.

2. Stick to your budget

Once you have created your budget, you must stick to it. If you are set on spending more in one area, shave a little off some of the other areas to increase the spend in that area. Regularly review your budget –that way you won’t make any brash last-minute decisions.

3. List the pros and cons

Sometimes it is difficult to make a direct comparison, whether it be a theme or a venue, especially as every venue is different. By creating a list of pros and cons, you will be able to decide on which venue or idea meets your requirements.

4. Forward planning

An event plan (and if needed, a timeline) is a great way to plan. Use it as a working document, not only for yourself but also as a way of communicating your requirements and expectations to those involved. When everyone has a full understanding of their role and responsibilities, if something unexpected happens, you can deal with the situation quickly.

5. Contact with suppliers

Maintaining contact with your suppliers is very important; as you get nearer to the event, call them (not an email or message) to confirm they have all the information they need. People do forget, and this way, you have peace of mind, and can focus on other areas.

6. Evaluation and feedback

Evaluation and feedback are both really important. Ask your suppliers, staff and attendees for their feedback; I call it ‘the good, the bad and the ugly’. Don’t take negative feedback personally – you can always improve an event.

[General Manager] Stevie and the team are doing a great job of nurturing the animals and it’s nice to see the tools being put to good use around the farm. However, last year we went one step further and provided a financial contribution to the build of their brand-new monkey enclosure – which if you’ve had a chance to visit and seen the cheeky monkeys in their new habitat, I think you’ll agree was a wise donation. Why wouldn’t you want to nurture nature? Also, the Ryobi team are animal lovers!

You are innovators in cordless battery – what’s hot in the world of power tools and what are some of your most popular products?

Well, the question alludes to what’s hot, and that’s cordless battery power tools. We see market data and every year cordless power tools are growing, and traditional corded (AC) and petrol-powered products are reducing in market share. The convenience of cordless, the affordability and the much-improved power output due to battery technology innovation means they’ve become accessible to all.

whilst our 18V ONE+ fans have recently flown out the door due to the extended tropical spell, but sometimes you just can’t beat an everyday use and great value tool such as the 18V ONE+ combi drill with multiple batteries for all your DIY jobs at a cracking price.

What top tips would you give before starting any DIY project – inside or out? Assess you’ve got the right tool for the job! What’s the application? Are you drilling into wood, then a drill driver is all you need, but if you’re drilling into brick then you need a combi drill. Is your garden one tennis court size? Then a modest sized lawnmower is fine – if you’ve got an estate to mow, then think bigger.

Seems obvious, but a lot of discussions we have with end users which end up in disappointment is because they have the wrong tool for the job. If you own cordless battery tools, then consider the size of battery which has a direct impact on your runtime. The bigger the job, the bigger the battery and/or requirement for multiple batteries. Also, invest in the right accessory for the job (if applicable). So often, we hear people blaming the tool for not being up to the job, but actually it’s the incorrect accessory or just a cheap version which can totally diminish the tool.

Finally, before you do any part of your project, always get the tool running before starting. For example, get the drill fully rotating before applying to brickwork or a chainsaw fully rotating before chopping to avoid stalling the tool or damaging the motor or electronics over a prolonged period. uk.ryobitools.eu

Precious Pumpkin

Nothing says autumn more than pumpkins... Caroline Hind, Nutritional Therapist (mBANT & CNHC) for Vitaminology, puts this colourful winter squash in the spotlight.

Pumpkins were one of the staple foods for the early European settlers of America. Versatile to cook with and providing a splash of warm colour as autumn leaves start to fall, this bright orange vegetable is full of nutrients to get us through the colder months.

Low-carb

If you’re looking to reduce the sugar in your diet by moderating your carbohydrate intake, roast pumpkin is a healthy alternative to potato and sweet potato wedges. Chop pumpkin flesh into chunks or wedges, drizzle

with olive oil, season with salt and smoked paprika, and roast in the oven.

Packed with polyphenols

Polyphenols are natural plant compounds found in fruits and vegetables with the deepest colours –whether red, orange, yellow, purple or blue. Research has found that polyphenols have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects on the human body, protecting our cells from damage and supporting immunity.

Bursting with beta carotene

While carrots are commonly known to be good for eyesight, pumpkin is often forgotten as a rich source of the vitamin A precursor, beta carotene, which supports healthy eyes. The bright orange colour is a sure sign that beta carotene is in there – serve pumpkin with some healthy fat such as olive oil, butter or coconut milk (in a curry, for example) to help absorption of this important nutrient.

A good source of potassium

Potassium is the mineral that helps us to regulate our blood pressure, kidney function and nervous system. It is not an easy mineral to find in modern diets, but pumpkin is a great source. If you’re not a fan of pumpkin as a vegetable, try it puréed and baked with eggs, spices, coconut cream and honey for a nutritious dessert.

Prebiotic fibre

The microbiota that live in our gut not only give our digestion a helping hand, they also have a huge role to play in regulating our immune system. These microbes like a nice supply of fibre in our diet, to fuel their growth and activity. Pumpkin is particularly high in prebiotic fibre, the kind of fibre that readily feeds our gut microbiota. Add chunks of pumpkin to soups and casseroles for colour, flavour and a boost for your microbiome!

What’s cooking?

Jimmy’s Crispy Pork Belly, Braised Hispi & Juniper

Try this delicious recipe from Jimmy Doherty, which features in For the Love of the Land II, written by Jenny Jeffries (Meze Publishing).

“I absolutely love this delicious recipe. If you can, I recommend getting the pork belly from a local butcher. You will be able to tell the difference in the meat; its rich variety of flavour comes from a good life, and you’ll be supporting local farmers just like me.”

Ingredients

1kg pork belly, skin on 50ml gin

2 tbsp juniper berries

1 tbsp rock salt (we use Maldon)

1 tbsp black pepper

1 lime, zested

30ml rapeseed oil

1 hispi cabbage

50g butter 300ml vegetable stock

200ml pork stock

100ml double cream

1 tbsp cornflour

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 130°C. Score the skin of the pork belly, place it in a tray, and pour over the gin. Crush the juniper berries, rock salt and black pepper, then rub this mixture into the skin with the lime zest and rapeseed oil. Place the pork in the preheated oven for 1 hour 30 minutes. Cooking it slowly allows the fat to render and keep the meat soft, while the skin will be crisp.

2. Meanwhile, remove the outer leaves of the cabbage and cut it into quarters, ensuring the root remains intact as this will hold it together. Fry both

sides of the cabbage in pan with a little oil and butter on a medium heat until they have a nice colour, then transfer to a tray and pour in the vegetable stock. Place the tray in the oven to cook for 20 minutes until soft.

3. After the pork has been in for 90 minutes, turn the oven up to 190°C and continue cooking for 30 minutes to crisp up the skin. Remove the pork belly from the tray, pour off any excess fat, add the pork stock and heat gently to loosen up the juices. Stir in the cream and cornflour, then bring to the boil and simmer for 2 minutes. Cut the pork belly into 4 pieces with a serrated knife, then drizzle with the creamy sauce, avoiding the crackling as you’ll want it to stay crisp. Serve with the cabbage and your favourite potatoes (I prefer a fondant or bubble and squeak). A good piece of meat will always speak for itself, and only needs a simple accompaniment to make it shine.

Scrumptiously Sweet

Honey baked figs

Ingredients

6 figs

4 tsp Rowse Greek Honey

1 tbsp light olive oil

Small bunch fresh mint

Method

1. Make a cross-cut in the top of each fig, then put into a snug-fitting, shallow ovenproof dish. Drizzle the honey and olive oil into the top cuts, then bake in a preheated oven at 180°C for 5-10 minutes,

checking after 5 minutes. If the fruit are very ripe, they will be warm and ready; if a little under-ripe, they will take 3-5 minutes more.

2. Spoon the honey juices from the base of the dish over the figs, then sprinkle with torn mint leaves and serve hot or cold.

3. Tip: Incredibly quick and easy to put together, serve warm for

breakfast with a spoonful of Greek yogurt drizzled with honey or as part of a meze selection with cheese, cold ham, salad and warm bread.
