1.0 THREE RELATIONSHIPS

4

The three different designs show a continuous ideation which is a preparation for the final secret design. On the ground, underground and above ground, from heavy to antigravity, various features combine together then create a final project.

5

6

1.1 POINT LINE & PLANE The exploration of the spatial relationship among the three concepts is indicated here, how the lines form the curved plane, the pilotis can be both of point and line in different aspects. Connections created by how they were placed and angled.

7

PRECEDENT

A sculpture designed by Sidney Gordin, the definition of elements depends on viewers’ sight. They could be a line in one direction but a point in another elevation.

Light and dark, their collision creates abstract spaces, on the ground and underground, light penetrates in every place.

13

1.3 FRAME & INFILL Transparent, antigravity, my frame & infill model has the sense of weightless. Volumes, planes, folded surfaces, all the elements consist a clear circulation.

3.0 FRAME & INFILL 14

15

FRAME & INFILL

16

PRECEDENT 1 Piet Mondrian’s painting, a product of De Stijl movement. Simply consist of colors and lines, lines are frame while colors are infill, shows a harmonious connection between various elements. 17

PRECEDENT 2 The Inside / Outside Tree, by Sou Fujimoto Architects, an exploration regarding the notion of ‘in-between-ness’. A great precedent for infill. Consist of random triangles, the model has interesting volumes. Transparency of the material gives me inspiration for making infills.

DRAWINGS

Separately showing the frame and infills, the frame was added randomly, however, each of the small element has relation with others in terms of either spatial composition or proportion. 22

Infill elements, all the foldings were created in a complex way, attempted to fabricate the shapes which can fit the frame as perfect as possible, meanwhile, need to keep them in one circulation. 23

2.0 HERRING ISLAND. SOMETHING LIKE A PAVILION

Visiting Herring Island for two times, try to find out our own site and discover inspiration for designing a secret pavilion. Started with the site analysis, decide the concept and find our own way for designing.

For selecting the final site, I have considered things regarding whether the position is private or not, how the river flowing there as well as constructions around. My site is on the east part of the Herring Island, a quiet place facing very natural environments. All the conditions are suitable for my concept.

2.2 CONCEPT

Lyrics of the song RIVERSIDE became my concept. It describes a special atmosphere, negative but still hopeful. There is a place you want to be alone, the river is our baptism, go and find the place, see how the river flowing, and discover the secret of life.

28

RIVERSIDE Down by the river by the boats Where everybody goes to be alone Where you won’t see any rising sun Down to the river we will run

When that old river runs past your eyes To wash off the dirt on the riverside Go to the water so every near The river will be your eyes and ears

When by the water we drinks to the dregs Look at the stones on the riverbed I can tell from your eyes You’ve never been by the riverside

I walk to the borders on my own Fall in the water just like a stone Chilled to the marrow in them bones Why do I go here alone

Down by the water the riverbed Somebody calls you somebody says Swim with the current and float away Down by the river every day

Oh my god I see how everything is torn in the river deep And I don’t know why I go the way Down by the riverside

Oh my god I see how everything is torn in the river deep And I don’t know why I go the way Down by the riverside

Oh my god I see how everything is torn in the river deep And I don’t know why I go the way Down by the riverside

2.3 CONCEPTACLE

Combining all the three projects before, I utilized grafting and conjunction, the plane in the middle represents the ground line, volumes on the ground and underground are the conjunction of mass, the rotating stairs indicate conjunction of point line & plane while the frame and infill are grafting with both of them.

2.4 DEVELOPED SKETCH DESIGN

Following the feeling of concept song, I tried to create a circulation for people to walk alone and steadily down to the riverside, the environment is always dark and cold, and when reaching the final volume overlap into the river, people can see the river flowing and find the secret.

33

34

DOWN BY THE

RIVERSIDE

3.0 FINAL DESIGN Developed from the sketch design as well as conceptacle, I found a better way to represent the concept. Got the inspiration from the island design from Japan, I changed the volume into a transparent route which can only allow one person pass each time. Sloping lead people down and down, then reach the final square room and as they coming close to it, the concept song will be heard clearer and clearer. All for leading people to the secret.

Two levels of the pavilion show one of the secrets. Volumes are separated on the ground while actually they are connected underground.

EXPERIENCE

The attractive part. Above ground, there is a space created by glass surfaces and frame, an obvious element from the frame and infill model, transparent floors and walls are attractive to children, they might curious that how people floating above the ground.

41

A lockable room, see through the transparent wall, see what is happening down on the river. Then go and find the way.

4.0 REFLECTION I enjoyed the whole design process, it is well organized, we were reaching to the final project step by step, and as an architecture student, I actually learned a lot from it. Searching precedent images was always the thing I am not confident with, I was not able to totally understand the standard for searching every time at the beginning, however, when I see what did other students found and how they present them, I would be clear with the abstract definitions. The studio tells me how to define architectures and what I should do during the design process. However, most of the projects I’ve done were satisfying. The point/line/plane, mass, frame and infill, the models and drawings’ outcome encouraged me a lot, especially the frame and infill, I considered a lot and tried my best to achieve the feeling in my mind and I did it. I found myself kind of good at creating an atmosphere in an abstract way though sometimes still not mature enough. During the two visits to Herring Island, I was not clear enough what I should observe and record, this led me to the failure of analyzing well. My analysis of the surrounding environment was not strong enough to support the conditions which were the reason why I have chosen the site. I deeply knew that then I tried to complete it better, still need to improve the related skills. All the final portions were under the assistance of my concept song which is one of my favorite English songs, I heard it randomly and thanks to its unique connotation provided the main thinking of the final design. Hella deeply understands the importance to always keep a concept while designing things. I was so lucky to learn with kind and talented tutor and classmates. The ideation of my final design consisted mostly of suggestions from them, Hella is a respected tutor, she always can give me decisive advice when I got stuck. Christopher is who I must mention, he is so talented and helpful, his mind is always full of inspirations which influenced me a lot. Earth Studio is the most enjoyable subject to me during the whole semester, hopefully, I will do better in the coming studios with all the experience I have gained from it. 51
