I saw this question in 2009 and I also thought B is the same with the middle one. I struggled why many Asians think that. I finally realized that it’s because of their culture and values emphasizing the essence. All products we use should be designed by someone. It means we can understand the purpose(essence) of products. Essential design is understanding the essence of everything and dividing into two things that should be changed and should not be.

Essential design is progressed in two ways. One is analyzing the essence of products. The other is finding the essence of behaviors. First one, ‘The essence of a product’ is progressed through some questions, like why some products are manufactured and what people want to do using these products. Comfort Airport(Contents No.01), Bil-live(02), Magic Window(03) and Huge Dispenser(07) are designed through this way. On the other hand, the other one, ‘The essence of a behavior’, is progressed to find some desires that we have missed before. I think if we find them, we can design products really needed. Jari(Contents No.04), Sexy Back(05) and Smarcy(06) is designed through this way.

Process of Essential Design is divided into 4 steps. In the 1st step, I find problems. And in the 2nd step, I comprehend essentials of them. Essential Design can be divided into 2 types. One is ‘the essential of a product’, the other is ‘the essential of a behavior’. In this step, I decide the design directions. In the 3rd step to design products differentiated and devoting essentials, I modify functions by adding or removing. It’s the key point to divide into two things that should be changed and should not be, in this step. In the final step, I test prototypes and modify products to design them which are really needed.
Finding Problems
Comprehending essentials
First, I always find problems that I should solve. In this step I approach broadly and vaguely.
In second, I simplify the problems and finding essentials of them. This step is for materialization and making products devoted essentials.

Taking a break does not necessarily mean sitting and doing nothing. We often do various things while taking a rest - for example, using a computer, reading a book, or eating something. Comfort Airport, an airport seating system, was designed based on this notion. Passengers often spend long periods waiting for flights at airports. In addition, many feel tired after long distance flights. Public chairs are installed throughout airports to provide places for relaxation. Comfort Airport offers more. It is a convertible chair that makes airports more comfortable and convenient. While Comfort Airport can be used as a regular chair, it can also be easily transformed into a table on which people can use computers and mobile devices. In a grouped table configuration, it can also serve as a place to converse with friends or family. With its backrest and table folded down, it can be transformed into a daybed on which passengers can lay down for a nap.

Passengers often spend long periods waiting for flights at airports. In addition, many feel tired after long-distance flights. In order to provide places for relaxation, public chairs are installed throughout airports. Taking a rest, however, doesn’t mean ‘Sitting and doing nothing’. This is why Comfort Airport is designed. People do really various things, while taking a rest. For example, they use a computer or mobile phone, read a book, talk with someone, or eat something. To design a bench, which offers a comfortable space for taking a rest, I have considered many things people do when having a break.

The more popular smart devices are, the more people make use of them for their business, journey and others. For instance, travelers reserve their hotel or transportation, and receive information about how to be their destination or how long does it take. Also they spend their waiting time using them. Recently WiFi service at airport has been one of the most important things to evaluate service quality, because it’s the easiest way that strangers receive their necessary information. Therefore, space for using smart devices, also, would be an important thing.

Passengers often take a nap when waiting for a long time at airport. Many people are, however, reluctant to lying on a bench, because they take too many seats if they do that. While they take a nap, lying is more comfortable than sitting on a bench. This extensible seat design helps passengers take fewer space when they are having a nap. “Now, you can cook, eat and store with only one.” Recently, the number of single-person households are increased in Asia. Their residential environments are narrow, and their spaces for living, cooking and eating are not separated. They have only 1 or 2 rooms and the average size of their houses are about 23~33 square meters. Therefore efficient use of space are necessary. The biggest advantage of built-in furniture is the ability to utilize space efficiently. ‘Bil-live’, the built-in kitchen system, is created based on this idea. It’s designed to offer a kitchen system, efficient and comfortable, to a single-person household. It is composed with refrigerators, tables and electric ranges and convertible. Now, users can store their food ingredients appropriately and take them out easily. They can also cook at comfortable space and eat their meals at the same space.

The number of SPH is not a few in the world. It is, especially, being increased dramatically in Korea. It is estimated that it would reach about 5,880 thousands in 2020.
The biggest advantage of built-in furnitures or appliances is that they helps to using space more efficiently. This advantage would be worth more in particular to Korean SPHs, who have only 22~32 square meters averagely.
The size of SPH’s houses are narrow, and they have few rooms. It means their spaces for living, cooking and eating is not separate. It is, therefore, essential to use their space efficiently.

Also I tried designing a cooking space in which users can take food ingredients out, trim them without moving a lot. If a view of Paris is seen through the windows, don't you feel you're really there? This air purification system makes users feel they're somewhere they want to be. It's true that air purification systems make indoor air fresher. But it doesn't mean that they make users feel fresher. I want to design an air purification system which really do that. One of the best way to feel fresher is going somewhere fresh (and want to go), but can’t do that every time. In this situation Magic Window would be valuable. It shows anywhere users want to be, and it provides the same atmosphere and climate environment including the wind, humidity, temperature, scent, fragrance and sound to make them feel they're really there. If you want to breathe with the freshest air? With Magic Window, go to Amazon! Also if you want a romantic dinner with your lover? Go to a city which have a nice night view. In the future, you can be anywhere you want to be only with Magic window and no effort.

6XPPDU\ ‘Jariki[d3ariki]’ is a Korean word which means drinking water placed on the bedside for night use. I thought it’s one of actions to make a bedroom comfortable. We all have a desire to make our bedroom comfortable and convenient. Many actions, like placing a humidifier, drinking water or setting up a mood lamp, are also for it. Jari is designed based on this desire. It’s a small-size water purifier combined with a humidifier. Through it people can drink water more easily when they feel thirsty in their sleep. They also can make their room air be healthier. Recently in Korea, a small-size water purifier is becoming increasingly popular. By the way, smallerization of appliances doesn’t mean just they’re smaller. They will change more. The place that they can be installed would change. And users and functions would. Jari would be a proposal about smallerization.

We often place drinking water before sleeping to handle sudden thirst easily. By the way this action is from a desire to make our residential space pleasant and convenient. The reason we put a humidifier or an alarm clock in our bedroom is the same. Jari was designed based on this action and our desire.

Recently in Korea, the small-size water purifier is becoming increasingly popular. It occupied 26% of Korean Market in 2013. It is because the number of single-person households is increasing and their residential space are getting smaller. The smallerization of appliances doesn’t mean that they’re just being smaller. I focused on this change and I’m expecting the water purifiers don’t need to be only in the kitchen any more. I also think Jari would be a good product especially for a single person household.

In order to bring a water purifier into the bedroom, something new is needed. For this reason I considered behaviors to make our bedroom comfortable and pleasant, and I focused on a humidifier. It has two things in common with a water purifier. One is that they are appliances using water, and the other is that they have built-in filters to make water clean. Water, at the bedroom, will be used to make indoor water environment clear in users’ sleep, and it also be used to help users drink water easily in their sleep. If be with Jari, your sleeping environment would be more pleasant and your morning would be refreshed more.

The shape is inspired from a bamboo. The reason is that Jari is motivated from a Korean word and it has functions humidifying and filtering water. Therefore, I tried to find image portraying Asia and pure water. A bamboo is so straight so it represents values like honesty, fidelity and integrity. It is also used as various implements in Asia. The water running on it is pure water image that Korean people easily imagine.

We are using bags to keep our items. I progressed analysis about keeping patterns and found that we always keep the same things in the same pocket. And also found that most people have a similar tendency. This tendency comes from some features that each item and pocket has. We feel that the upper pocket is easy to take out, and the pocket located close to our back is safe. So things frequently used are kept in the upper pocket and things which is needed to be kept safely is kept closely. Sexy back is designed based on this notion. I thought that a backpack which provides keeping space people really want is really sexy and I intended to design the sexiest backpack.

When people use their bags, they add some characters they think to each pocket. For example, precious items are kept in a deeper pocket. And items, used frequently and cheap, are usually packed in the forefront pocket. Usually people judge properties of a pocket according to the position of it, and this tendency is generally similar. People think that the pocket located deep is safer and that the forefront pocket is easy to take out. I think that backpack which is convenient for packing is a really sexy pack. So I want to design it using the tendency that people commonly have.

06. Smarcy
6XPPDU\ The main purpose of washing dishes is to make them clean. And we usually wash them with detergent. However we`re overlooking that detergent is not good for our bodies. To remove it perfectly, we have to rinse with water about 100 times. There are some benefits if we use detergent only when really needed - for example, when we wash a glass just used for drinking water or milk. First, it will reduce detergent we take unconsciously. Second it`ll reduces amount of using it, so it would be more financial. At last it`ll reduce water pollution. Smarcy is designed based on this idea. This smart sink faucet detects the dirty degree of dishes, and guides the most reasonable way to wash. It would help us wash them easily and conveniently. At the same time, it would be good for our natural environment.
