No Matter |

No Matter is a holistic solution to avoid particulate matter in South Korea. These days, South Korea suffers from very serious particulate matter pollution. For this reason, air purifier and mask markets are growing drastically, but these are not enough to avoid particulate matters efficiently and effectively. With No Matter, Korean people will have better chances to reduce exposure to particulate matter.

HaA Design Inc. Korea / LG Electronics

LG Motion Remote Control | HaA Inc is a leading design firm in Korea, they had designed LG’s remote controls for four years in a row. I worked as an industrial designer at this company, and LG Electronics was our client. This project focused on LG’s new remote control models in 2016.

28

There are two types of TV remote controls including MR and SP in this project. MR16 is the bigger one with various sensors including motion capturing, and SP16 is the smaller one offering only basic functions. The client, LG company, wanted us to design those two remote controls with a premium image as well as with ergonomic shapes. In this project, conceptual and aesthetical connections between an MR and an SP.

DRINKING WATER

JARI |

Jari is a product design project focusing on a trend, miniaturization of products. This project is inspired by an idea that we all have a desire to make our bedroom comfortable and convenient. Jari provides not only a comfortable sleep environment but also suitable interaction for your convenience with the combination of physical and graphic user interface.

59

We often place drinking water before sleeping to handle sudden thirst easily. By the way, this action is from a desire to make our residential space pleasant and convenient. The reason why we put a humidifier or an alarm clock in our bedrooms is the same. Jari has been designed based on this action and our desire.

Small-size water purifiers are becoming increasingly popular. It occupied 26% of Korean Market in 2013. It is because the number of single-person households is increasing and their residential space are getting smaller. The miniaturization of appliances doesn’t mean that they’re just being smaller. I’m expecting that the water purifiers don’t need to be only in the kitchen anymore in the future. I also think Jari would be a good product for a single person household.

In order to bring a water purifier into the bedroom, something new is needed. For this reason, I considered behaviors to make our bedroom comfortable and pleasant, and I focused on a humidifier. It has two common features with a water purifier. One is that they are appliances using water, and the other is that they have built-in filters to make water clean. Water, at the bedroom, will be used to make indoor water environment clear in users’ sleep, and it also be used to help users drink water easily in their sleep. If you are with Jari, your sleeping environment would be more pleasant and your morning will be fresh more.

Humidifier Water purifier

63

sketch

The shape is inspired from a bamboo. The reason is that Jari is motivated from a Korean word and it has functions humidifying and filtering water. Therefore, I tried to find image portraying Asia and pure water. A bamboo is so straight, so that it represents some values, like honesty, fidelity and integrity. It is also used as various implements in Asia. The water running on it is pure water image that Korean people easily imagine. 64

Two study models are created to cosider user experience. I’ve focused on designing it as a small but a convenient product for use.

These days, the number of single-person households has been drastically increasing in Asian countries. Their residential environments are very narrow, and their living, cooking, and eating spaces are not separated. The Bil-Live Refrigerator is a module that fits into the wall, thus taking up very little space. Fridge comes integrated with a table, making it easy to dine in the limited space.

Average size of SPHs’ homes in Korea

2

The average size of SPHs’ houses is small and narrow with only a few rooms. It means that their space for living, cooking, and eating is not separate, and It is necessary to use their space efficiently. The biggest advantage of built-in furniture and appliances is that they are useful to use space more efficiently. This advantage would be worth more in particular to Korean SPHs, who have only 22~32 square meters on average.

301 sqaure feet / 8.5 pyeong (Korean Unit)

72

In order to design a kitchen system which occupies efficient space, various transformation methods were considered, such as a slide, rotating, and folding types. Also, I tried to design a cooking space where users can take out food ingredients and trim them without moving a lot. The final solution, the L-shaped cooking space with a rotating and slide mechanism will make the space efficient and neat. In the case of the eating table, a slide type is used to make the space wide enough. Many people have experiences inconvenience when they take something out from a refrigerator fully filled. The rotatable interior design is chosen to solve this weakness.

73

One of the biggest issues in this project was the connection between a rotatable structure and its exterior design. To use circle-shaped trays, the exterior shape should be cylinder-shaped. However, cylinder shape is not very useful for a refrigerator. In order to solve this problem, various ideas were considered.

REFRIGERATOR FOR FOOD MATERIALS The height of this section is based on the cooking table. Users can prepare their ingredients on cooking table, as soon as they take out them from a refrigerator.

ROTATABLE STRUCTURE A weakness of built-in refrigerators is that users have trouble taking out something stored deeply. For this reason, the rotatable structure is used.

STORAGE FOR COOKING OIL AND CONDIMENTS It’s recommended to finish a cooking oil within 2 months. In order to store condiments and cooking oils for longer than 2 months, appropriate storage condition is offered in this section with dry humidity and cool temperature.

REFRIGERATOR FOR SIDE DISHES The height of this section is designed based on the table for eating. Users can put side dishes into and take them out from the refrigerator easily when they are having meals on the table.

TRANSPARENT DOORS All doors are transparent, so users can look into the refrigerators without opening.

In Korea, sitting on a floor is very common while eating a meal. This lifestyle is helpful for more people to have meals together in the same place. Sitting on a floor during meals will help people use their space more efficiently. Moreover, it makes upper space empty, so people can use this space for other purposes.

Single-person households’ lifestyles are quite different from lifestyles of other households. For example, it’s recommended that condiments, like cooking oil, be consumed entirely within 2 months. SPHs, however, use less amount of condiments, so they have problems to consume them in this period. An appropriate storage system which is helpful to store condiments much longer is needed, by making a dry and cool environment. Also, technologies which maintain optimal environment are necessary for the households’ lifestyles.

79

SPACE FOR COOKING By spreading a cooking table and electric ranges, users can make their cooking space. The refrigerator, for food ingredients, is at almost the same height of the cooking table. It makes users easily take out food ingredients and trim them. This structure helps users cook comfortably at small space.

Table for eating

TABLE FOR EATING By pulling the table, users can make a space for their meals. The refrigerator for side dishes, is situated at almost the same height of the eating table. It helps users take out their side dishes easily. It also helps users put aside remaining dishes into the refrigerator after meals. Sitting on the floor occupies smaller space, so people can use their space efficiently.

COMFORT AIRPORT |

Comfort Airport is a convertible chair that makes airports more comfortable. While Comfort Airport can be used as a regular chair, it can also be easily transformed into a table on which people can use computers and mobile devices. In a grouped table configuration, it serves as a place to converse with others. It can also be transformed into a daybed on which passengers can lay down for a nap.

Passengers often spend long periods waiting for flights at airports. In addition, many feel tired after long-distance flights. I believe that public chairs are installed to provide places for relaxation. However, taking a rest doesn’t mean ‘sitting and doing nothing’. This is why Comfort Airport is designed. People do various things while taking a rest. For example, they use a computer or mobile phone, read a book, talk with other people, or eat something. To design a bench, which offers a comfortable space for taking a rest, I considered many things people do when having a break.

ADJUSTABLE TABLE & BACKREST DESIGN Sometimes, tables are useful to take a rest comfortably, when people are eating, using a laptop or reading a book. Each backrest of the bench is convertible, and users can use it as a table when they need. It would help them do more things on the bench.

86

ROTATABLE TABLE DESIGN The cylinder shaped axis is for a convertible function of the bench. Passengers can make their own space by rotating some parts of the bench. The rotatable structure is helpful for users to get a place with a large table and to have conversations.

87

EXTENSIBLE SEAT DESIGN Passengers often take a nap when waiting for a long time at an airport. It is true that when they take a nap, lying is more comfortable than sitting on a bench. This extensible seat design helps passengers take less space when they are having a nap. And it means they can sleep or take a break more comfortably.

88

ELECTRIC OUTLET DESIGN It is important for people to recharge their own smart devices easily to use theirs conveniently. Therefore, electric outlets should be considered as a key factor to make airports comfortable. This feature will make passengers use their devices more easily, because many of them have trouble in recharging theirs repeatedly when traveling.
