Sketch Proposal 1: Fluid-Dynamics – Street Vortex The aerodynamic process called the vortex street are basically several vortexes swirling in a pattern due to the unsteady flow of fluids.
But this distribution caused by the unsteady flow gradually shapes into a balanced form which I tried to incorporate in my design. I have tried to form an asymmetrical yet balanced design.

Sketch Proposal 2: Sound Waves Sounds are made by a type of pressure waves that is caused by the vibration of an object in a compressible media such as air and water. These are called sound waves
sound waves differ in frequency and amplitude depending on the sound's pitch and volume. The quieter the volume, the lower the amplitude, and the lower the pitch, the less frequency and visa versa.
Sketch Proposal 2: Sound Waves Music is an unavoidable factor in life that impacts everyone. Melody, rhythm, tempo, harmony, etc. all coincide and plays an influence on our day-to-day life, This is the effect that I wanted to capture through this design.
Sketch Proposal 2: Sound Waves
Here I have separated the waves into 2 parts and interconnected them to represent the fusion of sound qualities such as rhythm and melody.
Sketch Proposal 3: Tree Barks
The bark of a tree is consisted of 2 major parts; the inner and outer barks. The bark that we commonly refer to is the outer bark which are dead tissues that creates a protective barrier for the tree from the environment. The outer bark, called the rhytidome, shows its specific patterns and fissures due to its incapability to keep up with the pace of growth of the trunk. The appearance of the rhytidome differs for every type of species, and even among same species, influenced by external environments such as climate.
Sketch Proposal 3: Tree Barks I first started looking into the patterns evident in tree barks due to the versatile range of textures and forms it took. But during my research I unexpectedly was able to compare two types of barks – one from a younger tree and one from an older tree. The seemingly very different texture and its correlation that it had with humans (eg. Younger bark: smoother, simpler. Older bark: rough, sophisticated) which lead to such design proposal.
Sketch Proposal 3: Tree Barks
One of my design aim was to represent a 'timeline' of life through the different textures . By varying the dynamics and sizes of the panels, I wanted to show a process of maturity that can be reflected upon us humans as well.
At this point, I had to critically reflect upon my process. The design is still too literal and the change of dynamics that I am looking for is not clear. Also, the application of the design on the body seems quite challenging, as it will be very hard to walk in it and to apply in the first place.
Idea Development: Further Research Whilst I focused mainly on the characteristics of outer barks priorly, I decided to have a look into the inner bark, changing the scale of observation. What I found was very interesting, with another series of patterns made up of cellular pores.
I have attempted to apply critical drawing analysis to try and form different patterns and panels.
Idea Development: Form Development
Incorporating neighbouring features of the bark, I made a foundational form based on the grain structure of the trunk. By extruding each 'layer', it reinforces the intended effect of gradual growth and maturity.
Idea Development: Form Development
Some alternative designs influenced mainly by the inner bark system.
Idea Development: Form Development & Panel Exploration
Using Rhino and hand sketch, I tried to start applying some panelling effects into the design.
Idea Development Exploring application of the design on the body. Initially began exploring for aesthetic purposes, but I was able to identify other purposes and significance of the position of the lantern.
By placing the most dynamic side towards the front, it gives a sense of protection like that of an armour, which is basically what the purpose of an outer bark is.
Module 1 Final Design
Incorporating the characteristics of both inner and outer bark, along with the concept of the process of life and maturity, the lantern is worn over the shoulders and chest area to show a dominant protective look, the panels leading towards the heart, the centre of life.
Reflection Module 1 has been very challenging, mainly due to being slow on getting used to the structure of the class and work. It has continuously proven to keep me busy, much more than I have expected. However at the end I feel that it was a very good learning experience, and allowed me to get a glimpse of what is expected of me in my further studies in Architecture. One of the very challenging aspect of Module 1 was visualising the natural process and interpreting them into a 3D form. I think it was because of this wall that I couldn't get over that lead me to feel demotivated, but as I gradually began to overcome this, I was able to engage with the topic more and more. The readings and the tutorials definitely assisted me in thinking outside the box and create ideas. I hope to be able to continuously be motivated to try my hardest in this subject. In the more difficult modules yet to come, I hope to adapt and apply the various techniques and knowledge provided to my benefit to create a final design that I can be proud of.
