JI GOLF HISTORY
John’s Island is a 1,650-acre (3,200 acres including wetlands), barrier island masterpiece situated within the quaint town of Indian River Shores in Vero Beach. Homes have been strategically placed to preserve old oak trees. A rare and cherished three miles of private beach access and over nine miles of Intercoastal Waterway exposure make John’s Island a playground in paradise.
John’s Island Club has three fantastic golf courses. The South Course was opened in 1970 and was renovated in 2018. The North Course was opened in 1973 and was renovated in 2021. The West Course was opened in 1989 and underwent a major enhancement in 2022. John’s Island Club has hosted several events including the 2015 USGA Mid-Amateur championship on the North and the West Courses.
1969 - March 28 – Edwin Llwyd Ecclestone Sr., at age 67, undertook a long-term plan for the development of a unique and private, residential family Club community that would fully preserve the beauty of the land and the legacy of the past – John’s Island. He knew the need for a championship golf course. So he hired Pete Dye and consulted with Jack Nicklaus to build the South Course.
Ground was broken in March of 1969, and the first round of golf was played on the South Course, in December of that year. At that time it was called “The Bayou”.
1970 - The original Golf Clubhouse was built. It was designed by the noted James E. Gibson, one of the country’s leading classical Georgian architects.
1971 - The second 18-hole golf course designed by Pete Dye, called the North Course, begins development. John’s Island is the first Club to offer two 18-hole golf courses in Florida.
1986 - January 1 –John’s Island Club was organized and purchased by the membership from Lost Tree Village. Later in December, Mrs. Jane Chapin sold her interest in John’s Island to her sister, Mrs. Helen Ecclestone Stone, who became the sole owner and developer through Lost Tree Village and John’s Island Real Estate Company.
1987 - A prudent decision was made to hire top architect Tom Fazio to design a third course, six miles west of John’s Island, fittingly called The West. Building another course was the kind of perk needed to convince the members to buy the Club from the owners.
Fazio built a gem on the West Course, where he could rely on a natural sand ridge he spotted 20 years ago when he was designing Jupiter Hills to give the layout elevation change seldom seen in Florida. “The property was magnificent,” Fazio said. “And the Club gave me almost everything I asked for.”
The West Clubhouse was built on John’s Island’s West Course. John’s Island’s third 18-hole championship golf course, designed by Tom Fazio, is over 300-acres. The land was selected because of its natural, spectacular north/south sand ridge with elevations up to 50 feet. Designed “green,” there are no homes built around it. The course opened for play in 1989.
2018 - South Course renovated by Craig Schreiner.
2021 - North Course renovated by Craig Schreiner.
2022 - West Course major enhancement completed by Tom Fazio.

TOM FAZIO
“People constantly ask me which of all the golf courses I’ve designed is my favorite, and I can’t possibly answer because we’ve been fortunate to be involved in the design of many great golf courses. But if I put all of the names in a hat and someone drew out a name, and the name John’s Island West popped out, I’d be content.
I’d be happy to stake my design and business reputation on this course as any we’ve designed. I had an idea it would be outstanding the first day I saw the site; I didn’t know exactly what the golf course would look like, nor how many bunkers it would have, nor what shape the fairways would be, but I knew it had potential. It’s pure golf.”
Born February 10, 1945, Fazio has designed more than 120 courses and has more courses ranked among the top 100 in the U.S. than anyone else in the business. His individual honors include Best Modern Day Golf Course Architect, which he received from Golf Digest Magazine three times. In 1995, Fazio became only the second course architect to receive the highest recognition awarded by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, The Old Tom Morris Award.

FLIGHT POOL
All teams may register for the Players Pool at any time up to their first match. Ninety percent of the money collected will stay within the flight in which it was wagered. The remaining ten percent will be set aside for the overall champions. Ties will be split evenly. Flight Winner Payout will be based on the team who qualifies for the Shootout. COST
$100 per 2-man team
PAYOUT: 20%
PLAY
45-HOLE ROUND ROBIN MATCH PLAY POINT TOURNAMENT
The field is divided into sixteen flights consisting of six 2-man teams (Flight size may vary based on participation). Flights are determined by the combined USGA handicap indexes (February 20th, 2024 revision date) of the Member and his Guest. Each team will play a 9-hole match against the other teams in their respective flight. Players will receive 90% of their course handicap. The maximum number of strokes between partners is 10. All strokes will fall on the card as they would for 18 holes. 1/2 shots will be provided.
In each match, the low handicap plays at scratch with the other players stroking off the low ball.
SCORING
2 Points for winning the hole
1 Point each for tying the hole Bye matches and all unopposed matches will be played vs. par as the opponent. A minimum of 10 points will be awarded in this scenario to the unopposed team. The full 9 holes must be played in each match.
AWARDS
Flight Champions: The team scoring the most points in the flight will be declared the Flight Winner.
A tie within the flight, between 2 teams, will be broken by the result of the head to head match. If the teams are still tied, a putt-off on the N/S Putting Green will determine the winner. A tie within the flight between three teams or more will be broken by a putt-off.
TEES:
Flight West North South
1 Back Back Back
2-5 B/M B/M Back
6-13 Middle Middle B/M
14-16 M/S M/S Middle
**Players must play from the flight’s designated location**
BALL
Players will play the ball as it lies throughout the competition
Penalty Areas: At the West Course only, balls leaving the “General Area” defined as maintained, mowed, or raked areas can proceed under “penalty area” rules. Penalty areas are defined as all areas that are marked with red paint, red penalty stakes or contain pine straw, palmetto, and are not main-tained on a regular basis. Procedure includes identifying the location the ball last left the general area and dropping within two club-lengths no closer to the hole (1 Penalty Stroke). Ground Under Repair is defined by white lines.
YARDAGE
Use of a distance-measuring device without slope measurement is permitted.
TIME
The expected completion time for a ninehole match is 2 hours. If a group falls out of position, a member of the Professional Staff may issue a warning asking to improve their position.
PRACTICE
In accordance with Rule 5.5, players are permitted to practice putt on or near the putting green of the last hole played, provided it does not unduly delay play for a following group.
NOTE
In match play, a claim must be made if there is a discrepancy with regards to a ruling. Players are encouraged to follow Rule 3.2d when unsure how to proceed. Please contact the phone numbers on the next page if assistance is required in your match.
OUT OF BOUNDS is defined by white stakes, bordering fence or inside edge of community roads. Any ball crossing over a community road is deemed to be out of bounds, even if the ball comes to rest on another area of the golf course. All paved cart paths, sprinkler heads, railroad ties, drain covers, and yardage markers which lie in the General Area are deemed to be immovable obstructions. The player may lift, clean, and drop the ball, without penalty, within one clublength of and not nearer the hole of the nearest point of relief. Lightning protection rods on trees, and bulkheads are deemed to be integral parts of the course, no relief.
SPRINKLER HEADS NEAR PUTTING GREEN – RULE 16.1: If a sprinkler head is situated within two club-lengths of the putting green and the ball lies in the General Area within two club-lengths of the obstruction (which intervenes on the line of play), the player may drop the ball at the nearest point (not closer to the hole) that avoids interference.
LOCAL RULES
All transition areas and sand paths are to be played as “the General Area” (you may ground the club).
Bunkers are identified as sandy areas that are completely enclosed by sod. All other sandy areas are to be treated as “the General Area.” Any sandy area not enclosed by turf is in “the General Area.” South Course Exception: #4
Bunker Right of Green, #17 Bunker Short Right of Green, #18 Bunker Left of Fairway. North Course Exception: #5 Bunker Left Of Green, #14 Bunker Right Of Fairway, #16 Bunker Left Of Green
BALL MOVED BY OUTSIDE INFLUENCE (CROW)
If it is known or virtually certain that an outside influence lifted or moved your ball there is no penalty. The ball must be replaced on its original spot (which if not known must be estimated).
In the event of lightning, one long blast of the horn will signal the IMMEDIATE suspension of play. If you have time, mark the location of you ball with a tee and find the nearest shelter (preferably returning to the Clubhouse)

FLIGHT WINNER SHOOTOUT
FORMAT : All Flight Winners will qualify for the Shootout. Foursome Stroke Play - In foursome stroke play, partners play one ball. One member of the team will hit the tee shot. From there, partners will alternate until the ball is holed.
RULES : USGA Rules will govern all play, with the exception of the local rules, which are followed throughout the tournament.
HANDICAP : No handicap strokes will be applied. Tee markers will be placed to create a level playing field among the flights.
WATER RULE: 1st Playoff Hole – Any team hitting any shot into the water on the first playoff hole will be eliminated.
2nd Playoff Hole – Teams that hit a shot into the water will have an opportunity to continue play under USGA Rules
CONTINUOUS PUTTING: Continuous putting will be in place on the first playoff hole. Once all teams are on the green, continuous putting will be in play from furthest team to closest team. Continuous putting on the 2nd Playoff hole will be at the discretion of the Rules Committee/Professional Staff
WINNER: The shootout will begin on #18 South. If one team records the lowest score, they will be the Overall Champion. If two or more teams tie for the low score, hole #18 will be played again with the opposite partner teeing off. If still tied, a closest-to-the-hole contest will be contested with both partners playing a shot. The ball closest to the hole will be the Overall Champion.
