Floating square 2012.7. -SITUATION -HOW TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM -DIAGRAM -3D VIEW -STUDY MODEL
My project began with two questions raised by our Constitutional Court’s architecture. The Court is a facility and space built for the people, but its forwarding architecture gives a withering feeling and creates an uncomfortable atmosphere. Hence, ‘Should not the Court represent a space for the people?’ and, ‘do we not dream of a space where people may come and go as they please and where they may freely discuss and debate?’
I wanted to build a facility that would praise the true meaning of the Constitution, while fitting with changing political and social trends. While in the past we had such designs as the Chandigarh High Court, we are now moving towards the trends of an Antwerp High Court-like architecture. Architecture clearly adjusts to the changes of time, and this is why I pondered over how to blend the spaces of our Constitutional Court.

SITUATION
The Court’s architecture contradicts the current paradigm. Located in a historic and cultural district including the Han-ok (traditional Korean house) preservation zone, it thereby fails to blend with its environment. What can we do to resolve this situation?
15, Bukchon-ro(Jae-dong), Jongno-gu, Seoul, Korea The Constitutional Court of Korea is an independent and specialised court in South Korea, whose primary role is the reviewing of constitutionality under the Constitution of the Republic of Korea. It also has administrative law functions such as ruling on competence disputes between governmental entities, giving final decisions on impeachments, and making judgments on the dissolution of political parties.

HOW TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM
길/ ROAD,PASSWAY 광장/SQUARE,AGORA Four walls that seem to symbolically, and strictly guard our Constitution surround the present Constitutional Court. We focused on the elements of ‘path’ and ‘plaza’ to allow citizens to freely come and go to the Court, all the while preserving the walls. The path has diverse directions and is an architectural space that is familiar to the people. Meanwhile the plaza is a place where various activities occur. Together, they constitute a democratic and familiar space. We allowed the path to lead naturally to the Constitutional Court. Once inside the facility of the Court, we encounter an open plaza. The new Constitutional Court, reborn in the form of a square, is a new space of free communication.
