W

elcome to our 2014 Spring/Summer Edition of Intercom. As our fiscal year comes to a close, Foundation cannot thank you enough for the role that you play in making it possible for high school students to become college graduates; building tomorrow’s leaders; making a home a reality for a family and creating hope for so many.

Jack and Jill of America Foundation continues to Do Great Things For Kids and doing those things cannot be done alone. The Board of Trustees play an integral role in scoring and proposing the grants that Foundation supports each year. This year, our grant process moved to an online platform.

Foundation is moving in this direction and putting new technologies, systems and programs that best fit with our donors and grantees.

Thank you to the National Executive Board for all of your work in helping Foundation get in front of the members of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. Foundation was able to send out a survey to the membership and also have a Talkin’ on Tuesday dedicated to Foundation and the state of Black children in America. We have much work to do!

Des Moines, IA Activity: Service Project for local food agencies

program for the annual “SOUPER BOWL” held at a local church. The children helped with packaging donated nonperishable food items of 150,000 lbs of food (such as peanut butter; spaghetti sauce; pasta; canned meat; canned goods and vegetables; juice; cereal and more). Donations were delivered to over 50 local food agencies in the Des Moines area.

Description: On Monday, February 3, 2014 the Range Rovers (age: 9 to 12) & Black Leaders of Tomorrow (age: 13 to 18) of the Des Moines Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. participated in a collaborative project with the Des Moines Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. youth

Oklahoma City, OK Activity: 2013 Derby Fundraiser “Off to the Races”

homa City Chapter was fundraising for The Wonderfully Made Foundation in accomplishing its mission of providing a support system that EMPOWERs individuals to achieve. The Wonderfully Made Foundation (WMF) focuses on personal development, life skills, transitional housing for the homeless, a clothing closet for the less fortunate, domestic violence awareness, and youth development and mentoring.

Description: The Oklahoma City Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. hosted its annual fundraising benefit at on Sunday, September 29, 2013; in order to assist the Jack and Jill of America Foundation, Inc. in accomplishing its 2013 goals of initiating educational workshops, in conjunction with schools, community centers, and not-for-profit organizations. The Okla-

St. Clair County, IL Activity: “Jack and Jill on Wheels” Skate Party Description: St. Clair County Chapter held a “Jack and Jill on Wheels” skate party on January 19, 2014. Approximately 175 members, our families and many guests put on skates and had a two hour blast! The event proved to be a successful Foundation fundraiser and community social.

You could not tell who was serving whom. This partnership is here to stay. In the coming years the Baltimore County, MD chapter is looking forward to enhancing our participation with activities not only during the holidays but throughout the year.

Baltimore, MD Activity: Thanksgiving Dinner in Middle River to over 70 children Description: “Inspiring and enabling all young people to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens.” A quote from the Boys and Girls Club. This quote holds true for what the mothers of The Baltimore County, MD Chapter instills in their children. This is why they partnered with the Boys and Girls Club of Baltimore County for the last two years. This programming year they served Thanksgiving Dinner in Middle River to over 70 children. Ages 5 to 17 helped serve the food. As the children walked through the food line, the Jacks and Jill’s served chicken, ham, and string beans. They scooted meatballs and spooned pasta and stuffing onto plates.

Burlington-Willingboro, NJ Activity: Feeding over 200 members of the Burlington County community Description: On January 20, 2014, the BurlingtonWillingboro Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. Commemorated the National Day of Service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by feeding over 200 members of the Burlington County community. This event was held at Sisterhood, Inc. Sisterhood, Inc. is a 501-3c organization aimed at providing advocacy, mentoring, and supportive services for women and children in crisis and life transition. The program began by a short program in honor of MLK Day led by the Reverend Covington of Sisterhood, Inc. This was

followed by the community members being served lunch by the children in the B-W Chapter. The lunch was prepared and set up completely by our chapter moms. This was our third year working with this organization, and it is a wonderful experience for all participates. Our chapter has also donated money from our fundraising account to help off set some of the many expenses required to clothe, and feed the many woman and children who rely on this grass roots organization.

Activity: Independent Grant Recipient: Second Street Youth Center (SSYC) Description: Central New Jersey Chapter, partnered with the Second Street Youth Center who are the recipients of the 2013 Independent Grant. Through this grant, SSYC is tutoring and mentoring high school young men and women as they prepare for college entrance exams, namely the SAT. CNJ met with the students who are the beneficiaries of the mentoring.

2012-2013 CNJ Foundation Chair Lisa Redmond congratulated SSYC on their grant and presented SSYC with a Community Leadership Award.

Central New Jersey, NJ Activity: Holiday Smiles – Thanksgiving Baskets Description: In today’s challenging environment food insecurity is present in 1 in 4 African American homes. Families struggle to consistently provide nourishing meals despite having a working adult in the home. Central New Jersey Chapter brought smiles to the faces of struggling families during the holiday season through our Holiday Smiles program. In partnership with the Simuel Whitfield Simmons organization, CNJ prepared Thanksgiving Baskets filled with the trimmings for a holiday dinner. Through local store and chapter donations we secured the neces-

Essex-Hudson, NJ Activity: Foundation for Success Workshop Description: Proceeds from the Jacqueline Robinson Grant enabled the Essex-Hudson County chapter of Jack and Jill to partner with NJ SEEDS to 5

conduct the Foundation for Success Workshop. NJ SEEDS is a Newark, NJ based nonprofit organization that provides students from low-income families with educational opportunities, knowledge, support and skills to thrive in some of the nation’s most prestigious schools and colleges. “NJ SEEDS identifies and selects scholars at three different points along their educational trajectory and has developed three distinct academic programs to meet their needs.”

Our chapter chose to work with the Young Scholars Program - a group of twenty-five 4th and 5th graders who are given academic preparation and leadership development for placement at independent day and boarding schools. Young Scholars students face several social and cultural challenges as they transition from their public school environment to private school. The main objective of the workshop was to provide them with tools that will help them navigate these challenges. Each student was provided a copy of the book, “We Beat The Street”, an inspirational story by three doctors who grew up on the same inner city streets of Newark, NJ, beating the odds and achieving their goals. On the morning of the workshop we held a book club discussion moderated by one of our mothers who shared a similar exp erience.

The book club was followed by an open discussion with Mayor Dwayne Warren of Orange NJ. Mayor Warren shared his own personal story of what it was like growing up in the inner city and having to navigate the social and cultural challenges he experienced in making the same transition. He shared the strategies and tools he used to become successful.

We concluded the session by splitting the NJ SEEDS kids into small groups with some of our own EssexHudson teens at each table, answered questions and leading conversations about all that had been covered.

Loudoun County, VA Activity: Cotillion-Beautillion, “Emerging Emeralds… Crystallizing the Elements” Description: The Loudoun County Chapter of Jack and Jill of America. Inc. hosted their signature biennial fundraising event Cotillion-Beautillion, “Emerging Emeralds… Crystallizing the Elements”. An elegant12-month program designed to provide teens from both Jack and Jill and the local community with leadership development, community service, academic enrichment, etiquette, and networking opportunities. This program ended with an evening of elegance at the formal presentation, November 30, 2013. Proceeds from the event were donated to the Jack & Jill Foundation in addition to the many special projects sponsored by LCVC: $5,000 Gift presented to our community partner, The Orphan Foundation $ 2,000 to Sugarland Elementary School to fund a 3rd grade Science and Technology event $2,500 to sponsor a “Stop Hunger Now” event in Loudoun County on April 13, 2014

Nassau County, NY Activity: 55th Anniversary & Fundraiser Description: Nassau County chapter of Jack and Jill celebrated its 55th anniversary on November 23, 2013 with a very successful gala fundraiser held at the Carlyle on the Green in Bethpage State Park, NY. With over 400 attendees, Black Diamond Gala raised over $100,000 to fund the Nassau County Chapter Alicia Ashby-Boyd Memorial Scholarship Program and to benefit the March of Dimes and the Asso6

ciation of Black Cardiologists. Keeping with our emphasis on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), they chose Thelma Dye-Holmes, Ph.D., Dr. Icilma Fergus-Rowe, FACC, and Dr. Delcasse Joseph Jr., three distinguished medical leaders, as the honorees to serve as role models, demonstrating the importance of leveraging talents and leadership to contribute to one’s community. True to their classic “parties with a purpose,” they celebrated the chapter’s 55 years of service to the Long Island community by giving back, making it a night to remember for all in attendance. be donated to the Oakwood Avenue School in Orange, NJ. Oakwood Avenue is a PreK to 7th grade elementary school of approximately 300 students that has the highest level of families that qualify for free and reduced lunches in Orange.

Ocean County, NJ Activity: Pink and Denim Chance for Charity Description: The Ocean County Chapter hosted its first “Pink and Denim Chance for Charity” Fundraiser to benefit the Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated Foundation, NJ Orators, and 180 Turning Lives Around. The fundraiser was held at FISH Restaurant in Asbury Park, NJ. The décor and ambiance added to a classy and comfortable event featuring games of chance: silent auction, merchandise raffle, 50/50 raffle, and door prizes. Members, fathers, children and guests wore pink and chic denim attire, enjoyed butler passed hors d’oeuvres, laughs, and a social event for all ages. The Ocean County Chapter is committed to empowering our youth and strengthening families.

Long Live Jack and Jill!

North Jersey, NJ Activity: The Carole Robertson Back To School Drive Description: As an added component to our September, 2013 Carole Robertson Celebration, the three chapters decided to hold a community service project to kick off the year. So, in lieu of bringing desserts and drinks, we conducted a donation campaign called the “Carole Robertson Back To School Drive”. We asked that our families bring spiral notebooks, pencils, rulers, erasers and backpacks. These supplies will

Queens, NY Activity: The Digital Divide: The Arts and Science of Leadership Description: This Winter, The Queens Chapter, under the tutelage of President, Elizabeth Hooks, in conjunction with St. John’s University’s Liberty Partnership Program, presented lunch and learn winter program; The Digital Divide: The Arts and Science of Leadership. The generous grant awarded to us by Jack and Jill Foundation allowed us to increase participant knowledge of Microsoft Word, Power Point, debate skills, information gathering, leadership skills, and contributions made by members of society of all walks. On the first day, participants learned about bolstering their knowledge of PowerPoint presentations and strategies of leadership. The leaders discussed included famed civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Musician and Activist Bob Marley, United States Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and President Barack H. Obama. The facilitator truly kept the students fascinated as she discussed the contributions and backgrounds of these men, all while encouraging them to create interesting PowerPoint presentations with vignettes of each as fabric for their creations. Teens assisted facilitators in making the week long winter break experience enjoyable for attendees.

Teens, shared their community, but, their lives often never intersect with Liberty Partnership Program participants. During the implementation of the grant each were given an opportunity to see that their interests are similar, despite the fact that their access to some information was sometimes quite different.

Each group of teens learned that their peers are interested in matters that concern each of their lives.

President Hooks said it best when she said, “I am so pleased that Queens Chapter Teens understand the importance of strengthening their peers, even as

they too are growing and learning. And I am grateful that I get to lead an organization that includes a large group of committed mothers, some of whom took time off from work to see that this Lunch and Learn Series was possible.”

Rochester, NY Activity: Foodlink Description: On January 18th, 2014 The Rochester Chapter of Jack and Jill volunteered at Foodlink, our region’s local foodbank as part of our Martin Luther King Jr. Day of service. For three hours, Jack and Jill moms, teens, dads and children sorted through pounds of food that were shipped off to local pantries. In addition, we sliced apples for Foodlink’s farm to school program, recycled beverages and learned

Activity: Children’s Aid Society Donation Description: During their annual Christmas Brunch, the Southern Maryland Chapter collected over 50 different non-perishable food items and toys. The Southern Maryland Chapter carefully plans activities each program year that will promote a spirit of service and compassionate giving to the immediate community. In addition to the moms planning activities, the children are given a voice in how they think they can make a positive impact and address the needs of Southern Maryland, MD their community. The first stop on the Wine Tasting Tour was Friday’s Creek Winery in Owings, Maryland. Participants were warmly greeted inside the winery and informed about the winery’s history, staff and wines. After tasting six wines, the group was given the opportunity to taste a wine that will not be released until December or January 2014. The tasty and informative experience resulted in many participants choosing a wine or two to take home. The next stop on the tour was Running Hare Winery in Prince Frederick, Maryland. The five-wine tasting was enhanced by a tasty boxed lunch and sparkling water. The lunch was a perfect complement to the wine and fellowship enjoyed on the lawn.

FAR WEST REGION

The Fabulous Far West Region

O

ur hearts are as vast as our region, which includes Alaska, Arizona, California, Nevada and Washington. During our 2013 Mother’s Regional conference we provided over 240 hours of “mom power” service to Anchorage’s YWCA and Covenant House (for homeless teens). During the course of one afternoon, ten different programs under the YWCA and Covenant House umbrella were served. The ladies completed administrative tasks, organized baby

boutiques, created breast cancer awareness materials, made beds, sorted linens, cleaned community closets, entertained youth, and cooked and served meals. The afternoon concluded with a “blessing” of the brand new Covenant House facilities. The staff of both agencies stated that the positive impact of our presence would be felt for the entire year and beyond. It was truly an each one reach one type of day.

Los Angeles, CA

The Los Angeles chapter began the club year by par- home. Another success for our chapter was Jeans ticipating in the California Coastal Clean-up day at for Teens. Our teens organized the collection and Inkwell beach in Santa Monica, CA. At this event, delivery of 212 pairs of jeans for charity. we learned that Inkwell was the first “African American” beach and that we had great ties to the history of this location. We participated by cleaning the coast which was followed by a history lesson.

Our next project was to build a library for a school in need. The Los Angeles chapter worked hard to gather 3000 gently used books to assist in building classroom libraries. Our children and moms gathered and sorted books into grade levels. One of the best parts of this day – our children creating murals in the library. They transformed the walls. Book shelves were filled with our books and the walls came alive with the artwork. On January 20, 2014, more than 70 Los Angeles Chapter Moms, Dads and children joined 1500 volunteers to transform Hillcrest Elementary School and commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a day of service. The project was sponsored by LA Works.

On a beautiful 80 degree day, our volunteers rolled up their sleeves and went to work on a variety of service projects that included painting and gardening. Hillcrest Drive Elementary School is located in the heart of the community in which we live and it was wonderful to participate on a project so close to

Tri Valley, CA

Tri Valley Chapter’s 2014 fundraiser was Jazz, Jeans, and Jimmy C’s, held on January 31, 2014 at the Bridges Golf Club in San Ramon, CA. The event was well attended with over 175+ guests; most notable among the guests were National and Regional Representatives of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. and management officials from the non-profit, pact.

The very festive evening included a profitable silent auction, a live band, an awesome DJ that appealed to all, refreshing, complimentary beverages to greet our guests, photos to commemorate the event and loads of dancing and laughing. A great time was had by all. The proceeds for the event will benefit Jack and Jill Foundation and Pact, an adoption alliance.

Tucson, AZ

The Tucson Chapter in partnership with the Tucson Urban League (TUL) has raised funds to support programs that serve Tucson youth. This year we are supporting Project YES, an afterschool mentoring and tutoring program and The Community Closet, a store that provides food, supplies, clothes, and other items of need on a weekly basis for low-incomes individuals. On February 1, 2014, the Tucson chapter hosted 150+ people at our second annual winter fundraiser, Carnevale: A Venetian Inspired Masquerade Ball. Our chapter raised over $22,000 with the net proceeds benefiting both TUL’s Project YES and Jack and Jill of America Foundation, Inc. The evening started with a networking reception on the rooftop terrace where guests were greeted by our chap-

ter teens and costumed stilt walkers while enjoying Italian inspired hors d’oeuvres and signature cocktails. As Venetian inspired music played, our mother members made a grand entrance wearing Venetian costumes, masks, and gloves. The director of TUL’s Project YES, Sister Mary Ann, gave heartfelt words as she sincerely stated “our children just need some books.” The Tucson chapter’s fundraising committee did an outstanding job planning and implementing Carnevale – a truly Venetian inspired experience that proved to be a great time for everyone. In support of TUL Community Closet, the children collect food and monetary donations. Last year they were able to collect almost 900 pounds of food, and this year they hope to double that donation.

MID-ATLANTIC REGION

Charleston, SC • Columbia, SC • Spartanburg, SC for the United States Senate Executive Dining Room and the Head Banquet & Catering Chef for the United States Capitol. His Capitol Hill tenure included direct meal planning and preparation for President Barack Obama and Vice President Joseph Biden during their visits to the Capitol. As the Head Banquet and Catering Chef, he successfully prepared lunches, dinners, official meals and meetings for international diplomats and foreign heads of states and countries.

Each event featured musical performances from local artist. During the Expo weekend, Chef Daniel conducted separate events designed for children of all ages to educate them on the career opportunities of a personal chef. The events enabled the chapters support the Jack and Jill of America Foundation.

Activity: “Taste Of ” Event Description: The chapters of the Mid-Atlantic Region worked tirelessly to host successful fundraising events to support the Foundation and local projects and charities. In 2013, the Charleston, Columbia and Spartanburg chapters partnered with Thomas Media’s Black Expo and Black Pages USA to host three “Taste Of…” events. The 2013 Taste events featured culinary cuisine from top chefs and restaurants from throughout South Carolina. All three events featured Celebrity Chef Daniel W. Thomas. Chef Daniel is a Private Chef to Washington D.C.’s power elite, his clients include numerous U.S. Senators and other elected officials, many of whom were introduced to his creative treats when he served as a Head Chef

Burlington-Graham, NC Activity: Children’s Ball Description: The Burlington Graham chapter hosted its 4th biannual Children’s Heritage Ball. Families experienced the taste of Mardi Gras as they were enveloped in the African, Creole, French, and Spanish culture. Children took part in a cultural dance and watched a theatrical presentation, and listened to lively music as the adorned formal attire. The event was attended by the community, local and neighboring Jack and Jill families. Each of these chapters forged partnerships with local entities and Jack and Jill chapters to host successful events.

Portsmouth, VA Activity: “Casino Night” Description: The Portsmouth chapter hosted a spirited fundraising event that featured a Las Vegas type casino setting. A cashless system was used during the ticketed event. The event was for entertainment only and was well attended by members of the community and other area Jack and Jill Chapter members.

MID-WESTERN REGION

The Mid-Western Region

P

hilanthropy works to make us all better, as it enables all to be benefactors of good will. Jack and Jill of America, Inc. and Jack and Jill of America Foundation serve as beacons of this message to not only our members but to our community as a whole.

The funds raised were utilized in conjunction with the Lucille Hadley Grant to ensure that each community hosting the Teen Leadership Conference was left a better stronger community. In addition, local support and sponsorship has aided the various campaigns. The partnership forged between Jack and Jill and Westfield Insurance not only allowed the teens to service the Akron community but in celebration of the 75th anniversary of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. Westfield Insurance donated 75 laptops to the Boys and Girls Club of Akron. Partnership makes us stronger!

Communities grow and improve when they are able to expand the breadth of service to their constituency. And this is only possible through aggressive, well-planned and well executed service and funding campaigns.

The members of the Mighty Mid-Western Region believe in service and sacrifice. It was in our region that 1997-2001 Regional Foundation Member-At-Large Alice Leigh Peoples, whom later served as the 20th National President (2003-2005), launched the first Teen Conference Community Service Project. This community changing project model has now been emulated in all regions of the organization and served thousands.

The teens of the Mighty Mid-Western Region have raised revenue to ensure that projects chosen are meaningful and not limited by financial constraints.

In the past the teen fundraising campaigns have been colorful and creative in nature always encouraging the teens of the Mid-Western region to not only give of their resources but to give with their hearts.

SOUTH CENTRAL REGION

Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated South Central Region and the City of Prairie View Join Together for an IMPACT Day of Service

T

he Katy Prairie View Chapter hosted the 59th Annual Sensational South Central Region Teen Conference. More than 420 teens participated in the IMPACT Day of Service: “Inspiring and Motivating Public Awareness for the Community Together�. The purpose of this community service project was to provide an opportunity for our teens to make an impact in the City of Prairie View by sharing their time, talents and skills through community outreach.

Curb and Fire Hydrant Check Provided readiness to the Fire department by painting fire hydrants and home curb addresses Back Pack Drive, Literacy Project, Painting & Beautification for Jones Elementary School Donated school supplies, backpacks and library books for grades Pre-K through 4th. Repainted the cafeteria and school halls. Provided beautification and landscaping (trees, flower, plants, etc.) for the school grounds and organized the library bookshelves.

The IMPACT Day of Service allowed the teens to participate in one of the following community service The Mayor of Prairie View partnered with the Katy projects: Prairie View Chapter to promote this event through Downtown Beautification his weekly radio show and conducted a live interview Planted flowers and trees along University Drive to with South Central Region President Nelson Winrow.

The funds awarded from the Lucille Hadley grant were invaluable and afforded the opportunity to support the various projects. The teens were empowered to be creative and were excited to give back to the Prairie View community. A legacy of giving and caring by the South Central Region teens will be remembered for many years by the citizens of Prairie View, Texas.

South Central Region mothers continued their supportive efforts of the Jack and Jill of America Foundation through various fundraisers including beautillions, debutante balls, golf tournaments, casino nights, children’s ball and theatre events, just to name a few. A special thank you is also extended to our children for their Loose Change contributions. Giving back to the communities where we live, work and play continues to exemplify the Sensational South Central Region’s goal to provide One Focus: Excellence For All Children!
