If that weren't the case then we couldn't have grown to become the third largest auto insurer in the state and we wouldn't have a 95% renewal rate”, said.

And strongly deny that Mercury engages in a pattern of violations. “We strictly adhere to the rules set forth by the department of insurance and current law”.

By that reason, according to a statement, Mercury Insurance Group manifests very disappointed by the Commissioner's decision to attach the Market Conduct Exam Report. 'It is

highly unusual for this to occur. In fact, we are unaware of any instance in the past where this has occurred with any other company. We can only speculate that this decision is politically motivated'.

A few days ago, Carla Marinucci, Political Writer of the San Francisco Chronicle, wrote: -“the Mercury company and its chairman, George Joseph, have donated more than $7.2 million to state political campaigns in the past decade. In 2009, Mercury donated $13,000 to the gubernatorial campaign of Attorney General Jerry Brown but has not donated to Poizner's campaign for governor”.

It may be true, maybe not, but in the meantime, professional insurance agents in California we oppose the manipulation of information through the media. We regret that people with political interests seek to tarnish the image and reputation of serious business, law abiding and committed to their customers.

Diferent kinds of Coverage available in auto insurance

T

he consumer may be protected with different coverage types depending on what coverage the insured purchases. Some states require that motorists carry liability insurance coverage to ensure that their drivers can cover the cost of damages to people or property in the event of an automobile accident.

In the United States, liability insurance covers claims against the policy holder and generally, any other operator of the insured vehicles, provided they do not live at the same address as the policy holder, and are not specifically excluded on the policy. In the case of those living at the same address, they must specifically be covered on the policy. Thus it is necessary, for example, when a family member comes of driving age that they be added to the policy.

Liability insurance sometimes does not protect the policy holder if they operate any vehicles other than their own. When

you drive a vehicle owned by another party, you are covered under that party’s policy. Non-owners policies may be offered that would cover an insured on any vehicle they drive.

This coverage is available only to those who do not own their own vehicle and is sometimes required by the government for drivers who have previously been found at fault in an accident. Non-owners policies are also known as Named Operator Policies. The policies are useful for people whose drivers license has been suspended and they have to have insurance for their license to be reinstated.

Generally, liability coverage extends when you rent a car. Comprehensive policies ("full coverage") usually also apply to the rental vehicle, although this should be verified beforehand. Full coverage premiums are based on, among other factors, the value of the insured’s vehicle.

AAA: The average cost of auto insurance grew 5.7% last year

he average cost of auto insurance grew 5.7% last year, according to AAA's annual "Your Driving Cost" study released on April 6, 2010, and the average ownership costs per year to operate a medium-sized automobile increased 4.8% in the last 12 months, based on driving 15,000 miles a year, it costs 47.6 cents a mile, or $9,519 a year, the study said.

AAA has published Your Driving Costs since 1950. That year, driving a car 10,000 miles cost 9 cents a mile, and gasoline sold for 27 cents per gallon.

The increases can be attributed to rising prices for fuel, tires and insurance, the study said.
