Arrival at the Mason County Fairgrounds - Aug. 7, 2012
A Budweiser Clydesdale peeks its head out of the team’s horse trailer upon arrival at the Mason County Fairgrounds on Tuesday, Aug. 7.
Clydesdales a hit with community By PATTI KLEVORN News Editor The Budweiser Clydesdales attracted roughly 42,000 people during a six-night stay at the Mason County Fairgrounds Aug. 7-13 with five public appearances in the area. The crew travels about 320 days a year, taking this 10-horse team — one of three in the country — to communities eager to view the jaw-dropping beauty of the manicured draft horses. Anheuser-Busch introduced the Clydesdales as the company’s ambassadors for beer in 1933 to celebrate the repeal of Prohibition. They’ve been drawing huge public interest ever since. Ludington Beverage, celebrating its 75year anniversary of working with Anheuser-Busch, has been able to bring Clydesdale teams to the Ludington area four times in those 75 years — 1986, 1987 (because of
torrential rains in ’86 they returned in 1987), 2004 and now 2012. “When something comes here that’s world-class, in our little corner of the world, people come out,” said Budde Reed, owner of Ludington Beverage. “We couldn’t have asked for more support.” Reed and his employees and customers were excited, but so were the Clydesdales’ crew members, whom Reed said were thrilled with the numbers, comments and respect of the local crowds. The local showings also helped provide $10,000 to charity through T-shirt and hat sales. The 4-H groups in Manistee and Mason counties provided help to the teams — including dozens of 4-H’ers and their parents and leaders spending the night to guard the horses — in return for keeping shirt/hat sale proceeds. In Pentwater the shirt sale monies went to the fireworks fund.
