Muskegon County Attractions

Muskegon is well known for its unspoiled Lake Michigan coastline with sugar sand beaches, crystal blue water and the natural beauty of her parks, dunes and hiking trails, but this “Midwest Riviera” also abounds in history and culture which is reflected in a multitude of attractions you’re sure to enjoy. In addition to our natural adventures, try Michigan’s Adventure Amusement and Water Park; ride miles of thrills aboard Shivering Timbers Rollercoaster or defy gravity on the Funnel of Fear. Our Muskegon Winter Sports Complex offers a more extreme kind of excitement, featuring one of only four publicly accessible luges in the United States. The addition of the new fiberglass luge allows for summer fun as well and is the only wheeled luge in North America. As one of the deepest ports in the Great Lakes, we have a rich maritime history as evidenced by our lighthouses, working harbor and celebrated historic ships such as the USS LST 393 Veterans Museum, USS Silversides Submarine Museum and the SS Milwaukee Clipper! Other outstanding museums reflect a time when Muskegon was known as the “Lumber Queen of the World,” boasting more millionaires than any U.S. city. SEE ATTRACTIONS, PAGE 17

Six decades of family fun

MUSKEGON – Michigan’s Adventure will be celebrating six decades of family fun, thrills and memories in 2016 with new events and a special attraction. To commemorate the park’s 60th anniversary, Michigan’s Adventure will be bringing back a petting farm. Funland Farm will be the name of the new area with “Funland” being reminiscent of the Deer Park Funland days. Funland Farm will feature a variety of animals, including llamas, alpacas, a mini horse and a miniature

donkey. Families will have the opportunity to interact with the animals and create photos and memories to last a lifetime. With the return of furry friends in 2016, guests will be able to learn about the animals with their children and grandchildren. Park guests will be able to feed and interact in a clean, barnyard style environment located near the Mad Mouse. Deer Park was established in 1956 as a small animal park featuring deer, Freddie the llama, Storybook Lane and a vari-

ety of barnyard animals. Eventually, the park grew and added amusement park attractions and a water park. Michigan’s Adventure has been helping families build memories for generations in a safe, family-friendly environment. Deer Park Funland’s name was changed to Michigan’s Adventure in 1988. That same year Michigan’s first wooden roller coaster, the Wolverine Wildcat, was built. Michigan’s largest water park, WildWater Adventure opened in August of 1990. Michigan’s Adventure

joined Cedar Fair Entertainment Company in 2001. The park will also offer special Throwback Thursdays on Facebook showcasing images from the park’s history and a contest encouraging guests to share their memories on Instagram. The events calendar has also been expanded to include a special celebration on Grandparents Day. Season passes are available to guests at a discounted rate through May 30. Daily admission specials are available at www.miadventure.com.
