hen Michiganders hold up their hand to show people from other states where they live on the map, their pinky represents the Leelanau Peninsula.

Getting to the tip of the pinky from the knuckle (Mason County) can take anywhere from two hours to two days. Getting sidetracked along M-22 is pretty easy.

The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore alone is worth the trip.

“Good Morning America” viewers recently voted the area the Most Beautiful Place in America. Michigan’s northwestern Lower Peninsula is breathtaking, area residents know.

Now the rest of the country does, too.

After running down the dunes like you’re flying and taking photographs as keepsakes, enjoy the area then head to Leland. Find the first parking place you can after crossing the bridge over the river that flows from Lake Leelanau to Lake Michigan. If you’re hungry when you arrive, there are lots of options from sit-down lunches overlooking Leland’s Fishtown to take-out fare from many of the vendors in Fishtown itself.

Leland is a jumping-off point for hikers and backpackers heading to the Manitou Islands for a day trip or longer. So it’s not uncommon to see hikers loaded down with heavy packs heading for the islands. A ferry company provides rides to South and North Manitou during the hiking season. Leland also has great shops and art galleries.

Once you’ve had your fill of Leland, it’s time to get back on M-22 and head north to Northport. The Village of Northport traces its roots back several centuries when the area was settled by the Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. Northport’s street signs reflect this heritage. White settlers moved in during 1849 and the village was incorporated in 1903.

Today the area has historic walking tours, restaurants and parks for area visitors. One of the main attractions is the Grand Traverse Lighthouse, inside of the Leelanau State Park. The current light was built in 1858 and is open to the public.

After your tour of the Grand Traverse Light and the Leelanau State Park there are several places in Northport to grab a quick snack before moving on to Suttons Bay. Suttons Bay has become a popular destination for “foodies.” Over a dozen restaurants line the main street offering everything from burgers to high-end fare.

Suttons Bay is also home to the Inland Seas Educational Association and the Great Lakes Schoolship Inland Seas. The 77foot schooner offers several sailings each week, most from Suttons Bay. The area boasts many fine wineries that offer daily wine tastings — see the ads in this section.
