e have celebrated the League’s diamond anniversary of 75 years of history-making this year! The theme this year was to grow through what we have gone through. I know we have done just that! We have increased our community impact, brought more community awareness to the JLB, increased member numbers, engaged more sustainers, increased our volunteer hours as a League, and brought our fundraisers to new levels. We accomplished our CAF grant goal to give away $75,000 to local non-profits this year. We couldn’t have done all the great things without you, and I thank you for being a part of our year! Thank you all for the work you have done in the League this year to accomplish many goals! Thank you to our sustainers for your involvement, leadership, giving, and the legacy you set for us to continue your great work in Southeast Texas. It has been a joy to meet so many of you this year and connect with old friends. I am thankful to my sustaining advisor, past president Stephanie Vanskike, for your

GIVING THE GIFT OF

MOTHERHOOD: A Surrogate’s Story

T

he second Sunday in May is special. It’s Mother’s Day. A day to show appreciation to that special lady in your life. And for Susie Ramour of Vidor, that day is extra sweet. She is not only mom to her “mini me,” 5-year-old Avery, but also Susie has helped two families become complete, allowing other women to become mothers. Susie is a surrogate.

For Susie’s second surrogacy, she connected with a family that lives two hours away. “I was even able to attend the mom’s baby shower!” Susie exclaimed. “Which was one thing I had wanted to do, just to see how excited the parents’ family and friends were for them. Seeing the well deserving parents showered was so fun.”

“I was scrolling through Facebook when an article popped up about surrogacy. I read about it and thought, ‘how cool is that?’ I loved being pregnant and since we were done with a family of our own, I thought it was perfect for me,” Susie explained.

This family was not able to conceive because the mother battled cancer when she was younger and needed a hysterectomy.

Susie’s journey began in September 2018. A couple from Kentucky was striking out when it came to conceiving. They turned to IVF, which did not work either, and opted to use a donor egg and find a surrogate. “I am technically a gestational carrier, which means . . . the embryo [is] not related to me biologically,” Susie said. “How I explained it to my daughter, is if you want to bake cookies and you have the cookie dough but your oven isn’t working, you can put your cookie dough in someone else’s oven to bake them.” In May 2019, Susie gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. “[O]ne of the most touching things I remember was the baby’s grandmother was able to be there and she did not leave my side the entire time during labor. She didn’t speak English, but I could feel how emotional she was to be getting her first grandbaby,” Susie explained. Susie still keeps in contact with the family. The little girl is now 3-years-old and very well-traveled.

6

SPINNINGS | MAY 2022

“Their sweet baby girl arrived in December 2021. We still talk very often, and we plan to visit them in person anytime we travel near them,” Susie said. So what’s next for Susie? “Right now, I am just enjoying being me and living life with my family. I am looking forward to my first active year in the Junior League. I am definitely going to do another journey though. I’m thinking about next year!”

[O]ne of the most touching things I remember was the baby’s grandmother was able to be there and she did not leave my side the entire time during labor.

LEADERSHIP BEAUMONT By Lana Richards

One of my favorite quotes in reference to this program came from a team colleague: “I believe you can create a team so strong that no one can tell who the leader is.” Learning the art of leading can be exhausting and daunting, but I am so glad that I jumped in this year to be a part of the 50th class—the BEST class ever—of Leadership Beaumont. This program pushed me outside of my comfort zone and helped me to grow as an emerging leader for our community. This experience helped identify areas of being a leader where I am lacking and helped me find ways to work on those areas. There was great information, fun nights, and awesome networking opportunities. I can confidently say that I have friendships that will last a lifetime from this program. I don’t want to give too much away on what you actually do, because it’s more fun to go in blind and get your experience that way. That being said, I 10/10 would recommend any emerging leader to participate!

f you are a lover of great seafood, then you’ll most likely find yourself at a crawfish boil at some point in the spring season. This is the time of year when even the mention of crawfish has us imagining the steaming, spicy flavors and our mouths watering. But what do you do when you’re left with uneaten crawfish? What do you do with the leftovers? Wasting those flavorful crawfish tails that you’ve worked so hard to peel just isn’t an option! THIS recipe is the best answer to those questions. Crawfish Monica. This is a dish that Louisiana natives know and love from the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Created by NOLA native and chef Pierre Hilzim and named after his wife, this dish has become one of the most famous dishes at the festival. It’s easy to make, has simple ingredients, and it’s the perfect thing to do with your leftover crawfish!

Ingredients: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

1 pound linguine, fettucine, or spirals 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 stick butter 2 sweet yellow onions, chopped 5 or 6 cloves of garlic, crushed 2 teaspoons Cajun or Creole seasoning 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/4 teaspoon cayenne 1/4 cup dry white wine 2 cups heavy cream 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1 pound crawfish tails 1/2 cup chopped green onions 1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley leaves 1 cup grated Parmesan

Instructions: Cook the pasta in a large pot of boiling salted water until al dente. Follow package directions. Drain, reserving 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup of the cooking liquid. Return pasta to the pot and toss with the olive oil and 1/4 cup of the reserved cooking liquid. Cover to keep warm. In a large sauté pan or skillet, melt the butter over mediumhigh heat. Add the onions and cook, stirring until soft, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic, Cajun seasoning, salt, and cayenne, and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Add the white wine and cook over high heat until nearly all evaporated. Add the cream and lemon juice and cook, stirring occasionally, until slightly reduced. Add the crawfish tails and cook, stirring, to warm through. Add the onions and parsley and cook for 1 minute. Add the cooked pasta and toss to coat with the sauce. Cook until the pasta is warmed through, about 1 minute. Remove from the heat and add 1/2 cup of the Parmesan cheese. Turn out into a serving bowl and top with the remaining 1/2 cup of cheese. Garnish the dish with chopped parsley or green onions. Serve and ENJOY!

Pro Tips for Active Moms

PRO TIPS: Busy Moms Between work, volunteering, social obligations, and maintaining the home, it’s a wonder you have time to raise your kids—let alone take care of yourself. Below, we offer tried and true tips from some of our busy moms:

Let go of mom guilt—every mom moms differently, and no one way is perfect. Make time for you—whether it’s a massage, reading a book, a getaway, or a weekly girls’ night, make sure you’re carving out time for your own wellbeing. You’re not at your best when you don’t feel your best. Keep a schedule—whether physical or digital, having a schedule helps everyone visualize what’s on the docket for the day/week/month—and writing things down has been proven to help you remember things so that they don’t fall through the cracks. But be flexible—no matter how much you plan, you can’t plan for everything.

Whether it’s an illness, inclement weather, or one of a million other unexpected complications, plans will derail. When that happens, take a deep breath and readjust. Automate everything—take away some of your mental load by using automatic bill pay, setting recurring orders for refill items like household supplies, and booking maintenance appointments in advance on a quarterly, semi-annual, or annual schedule where possible.

Exercise—exercise releases endorphins, right? Get your blood pumping to better your mood and help you stay in peak condition. Share the load—this is a team effort, and your spouse should be doing their fair share. Your kids can help, too: cleaning up after themselves, picking out their clothes, setting the table—age-appropriate involvement in running the household is helpful to them and to you!

Outsource what you can—curbside pickup versus in-person shopping, hiring a house-keeper, or using a meal service can all save you valuable time in your day (finances willing, of course).

The Honorable Ketanji Brown Jackson, the First African American Woman to Become a U.S. Supreme Court Justice By Melaney Villery-Samuel

A

proud moment in United States history occurred on April 7, 2022, when The Honorable Ketanji Brown Jackson, who currently sits on the U.S. Court of Appeals, D.C. Circuit, was confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court by the Senate after being nominated by President Joe Biden. Judge Jackson will be sworn in after Justice Stephen Breyer retires this summer. Judge Jackson will become the 116th Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, but only the sixth woman to sit on the bench. Judge Jackson was born in D.C. and grew up in Miami, Florida. Her father was an attorney, her brother served as an undercover officer, and two uncles were career law enforcement officers. She obtained her undergraduate degree from Harvard University, where she graduated magna cum laude. She then attended Harvard Law School, where she graduated cum laude and

was an editor of the Harvard Law Review. Today, she is a dedicated wife to husband Patrick and mother to their two daughters. Judge Jackson’s life experiences and family background make clear her regard for the law and law enforcement, along with dedication to her career. With experience as a U.S. District Court judge and a U.S. Court of Appeals judge, Judge Jackson is tied only with The Honorable Sonya Sotomayor (our first Latina Justice) as the most experienced U.S. Supreme Court Justice in several decades to have been confirmed to the bench. Judge Jackson is also set to become the first Supreme Court Justice to have served as a public defender. Thus, she is sure to add fresh perspective to the Supreme Court, because public defenders are assigned to defend individuals in criminal cases who may otherwise be unable to obtain their own counsel, which is a constitutional right.

Judge Jackson’s track record displays a temperament deserving of her appointment to the highest court in the country. President Biden shared in his approval of the confirmation by tweeting, “Judge Jackson’s confirmation was a historic moment for our nation. We’ve taken another step toward making our highest court reflect the diversity of America. She will be an incredible Justice, and I was honored to share this moment with her.” For her confirmation, our nation’s first Black woman to serve as Vice President, Kamala Harris, presided over the chamber in her capacity as president of the Senate during the historic vote. Judge Jackson’s confirmation was truly a joyous, groundbreaking, and momentous period in our nation’s history that should be celebrated. We in the JLB congratulate Judge Jackson and wish her nothing but the best as our new U.S. Supreme Court Justice! 13

SUMMER 2022 Edition

As we gear up for the warm summer months ahead, I wanted to combine some of my favorite things and places that remind me of sunny weather, vacation, and good times!

Commodore Perry Estate, Austin, Texas This newly opened boutique hotel in Austin, Texas sits right in the middle of town, but you’d never know it! This 10-acre property was once the residence of a prominent Austinite and his wife Lutie, for whom the hotel’s restaurant is named. The gardens are picturesque, the service attentive, the food farmfresh and upscale, and the pool looks like a Slim Aarons postcard!

Electra Beach Cruiser Biking around my neighborhood on one of these vintage cruisers is one of my favorite things to do to catch a breeze when it’s hot outside. No, it doesn’t go fast and yes, it’s super cute! This is a step-through model so it’s very easy to hop on and off and I added a straw bucket to the handlebars (Nantucket-style) to ride up to my neighborhood’s mail shack to pick up my letters!

SPINNINGS | MAY 2022

Farm Rio Maxi Dresses I’m obsessed with maxi dresses for the summer! While not groundbreaking, there’s just something about a long sweeping airy skirt on the beach or sitting at an outdoor brunch. Farm Rio has been my latest favorite—founded by a group of designers in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the patterns and prints are so much fun.

Ranch Water Ranch water is my new favorite thing! Deceptively simple to make but oh-sorefreshing on a hot sunny day. Simply add equal parts fresh lime juice and a good tequila, and top it off with Topo Chico. From the several recipes that I perused, it seemed like a splash of agave and a salt or tajin rim are optional—but you MUST use Topo Chico or else it’s just not a ranch water! Pour over ice and sip away on a hot day.

DOUBLE-CRUSTED Key Lime Pie H

ere’s the scenario: It’s HOT outside. REALLY hot. You have a sweet tooth. But you’re hot! What is it that you’re craving? What is both sweet and cool? Satisfying, yet light? The answer is definitely none other than a key lime pie. Yes. This is one of those refreshing desserts that cures a sweet craving, but is light enough that you can have a slice and not feel like you overdid it! An absolute win-win. Joanna Gaines shares her doublecrusted key lime pie recipe in her Magnolia Table, Volume 2 cookbook and it’s pretty much perfect.

INGREDIENTS

• 2 cups cinnamon-flavored graham cracker crumbs • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted • 4 large egg yolks • 1 large egg • (1) 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk • ½ cup fresh key lime juice • 1 teaspoon grated lime zest, plus more for garnish • Whipped cream for serving

INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the graham cracker crumbs and melted butter until mixed evenly. Press the crumbs into a 9-inch pie dish and bake until the crust is set, about 10 minutes. Set aside to cool for another 10 minutes, but leave the oven on. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, whole egg, condensed milk, lime juice, and lime zest until well blended. Pour the filling into the cooled pie crust. Return the dish to the oven and bake until just set, about 14 minutes. Remove from the oven and let it cool completely, about 1 hour. Refrigerate until chilled, about 2 hours. Top with lime zest and whipped cream and serve. ENJOY! Credit: Magnolia Table - A Collection of Recipes for Gathering - Volume 2 by Joanna Gaines

T

he ONE Committee is proud to announce the Junior League of Beaumont’s partnership with the Beaumont Farmers Market for the upcoming 2022-2023 League year. Through this partnership, the Beaumont Farmers Market will be the first recipient of the ONE Grant and accompanying support. Over the past two years, the ONE Committee has worked hard to make the initial concept for this program a reality. Unlike the JLB’s Community Assistance Fund Grant, the ONE aims to provide the chosen nonprofit with handson support from the Junior League of Beaumont members to help elevate their organization, not just through monetary support. The Beaumont Farmers Market was recently approved to participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and is looking forward to accepting SNAP at the market soon. From printing materials to raise awareness on SNAP, disseminating educational materials to schools, helping with healthy eating presentations, and more, the Junior League of Beaumont will be able to do so much for the community through this partnership. In addition to helping with the organization’s immediate goals, the ONE is committed to spotlighting the Beaumont Farmers Market to increase the visibility of this great organization.

The Junior League will be offering opportunities for the Beaumont Farmers Market to speak at League meetings, sponsoring its membership in the Southeast Texas Nonprofit Development Center, featuring it in Spinnings Magazine, providing exposure at JLB annual fundraisers, and supporting its efforts with volunteers. The opportunity to work with Kate Thorne as the 2021-2022 Chair for this project has been such an amazing experience. We were able to create structure and expectations for this committee, have a competitive selection process with worthy applicants, and ultimately choose an amazing organization with which to partner. I could not have done it without her, and I am so thankful to have her in my corner. As Chair, I am looking forward to a great year with my co-chair, Marie Murray, our wonderful committee, and the Beaumont Farmers Market. We will also be starting the process of choosing yet another deserving nonprofit organization to partner with for the 2023-2024 League year. If you are interested in learning more about this project or assisting with spreading the word about the SNAP program and healthy eating at your child’s school, please email me at mallory. cross5@gmail.com.

past PRESIDENTS

unior League of Beaumont presidents give J their time and talents to lead the League with grace and dedication. We honor these women for their efforts, leadership, and continued love for the League! Here are a few quotes, favorite moments, and advice from our past leaders.

“Congratulations Brenna Rodriguez and the 20212022 Board of Directors for inspiring us all to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more during our 75th anniversary! Bravo!” -Joanne Brown, 2000-2001

QUOTE:

I was in the League for about 13–14 years, but there is a moment that I’ll never forget and one of my proudest for our MSM committee. The year I chaired MSM was the year that Hurricane Ike hit our area. It was a devastating blow to our area and the surrounding area as well, and not long after the hurricane hit, we began losing many vendors, which was understandable. Again though, our team pulled together to create a wonderful Market, which many felt was one of the first events that made us all feel we’re getting back to our norm. I remember going to the hospitality room upstairs and taking a moment to breathe, and being in awe of our committee’s hard work coming to fruition as I looked down at all the activity. I know there have been many others after me who have felt that pride and joy in working together and achieving much for our community. - Stephanie Vanskike, 2012-2013 I attended an Area V workshop, "Managing Organizational Change" (MOC) in 1988! The workshop logo was the Chinese character for change. This character has a dual meaning: Crisis/Opportunity. I have used this character to sort out many situations. It is well known that "Change" can produce a crisis or an opportunity. It is all in one's perspective! - Paula Lovoi, 1988-1989

ADVICE:

FAVORITE MOMENTS:

My favorite quote: "Service to others is the rent you pay for the room here on earth." - Muhammad Ali in 1978 - Diana Miles, 2016-2017

Honestly, I think I’m still processing my JLB presidency! It makes sense that after several high involvement years it would take another several years to decompress. But letting go and deciding to move on is probably the hardest lesson I’ve had to learn. It’s hard to let go when things are still good, but I realized in this last year that I’ve had my time to make an impact in the League as an active member and I need to let go and allow new leaders to do the same! It’s been my favorite thing to be able to witness the amazing accomplishments of our members from the perspective of executive leadership in the League and I can’t wait for others to be able to experience that, too. - Maite Broussard, 2020-2021

The years will pass so quickly. Enjoy the friendships, the personal growth, and be sure to challenge yourself. Step out of your comfort zone. Try something new. There is no better platform to learn to become a strong leader…a strong woman. Always remember that your time in the JLB is “TIME WELL SPENT!” - Janci Kimball, 2009-2010

A great leader listens more than she talks. - The Honorable Christine Stetson, 2010-2011

YEAR IN REVIEW ake-A-Wish creates life-changing wishes for children M with critical illnesses and the Junior League of Beaumont is happy to partner with the organization to support this worthwhile mission.

The highlight of 2021-2022 included “having the opportunity to reach more kids in the Southeast Texas area, hosting an in person training with the home chapter traveling here from Houston to train our ladies to be able to reach more kids and complete more wishes,” Make-A-Wish Liaison Amber Villareal said. “The strategic goal for the League in ’21–’22 was to increase trained volunteers to eight. We currently have nine League volunteers trained and in the training process,” Villareal explained. JLB was part of four wishes over the summer, sending two children to the beach, one to a dude ranch, and another to Tennessee. “It brings a special joy to be able to meet with kiddos and be the bright spot offering them a wish to be a distraction from a diagnosis, medical appointments, or treatments,” Villareal said. But the need is great. For every wish we grant, there are three more children with critical illnesses whose wishes need support. “I know that we have many great volunteers that will continue to meet with kids and grant wishes. I can't wait to see more opportunities be available for wish kids and getting back to normal wish granting. I will be chairing Service Squad next year, so I look forward to still being a part of the program,” Villareal said.

“It brings a special joy to be able to meet with kiddos and be the bright spot offering them a wish to be a distraction from a diagnosis, medical appointments, or treatments,” Villareal said.
