Dancing with the Stars of Southeast Texas

VOL 88 ISSUE 4 DWTS 2024

JLB has a new logo!

The Junior League of Beaumont wants to add to our currently used red column logo and include this new addition in our brand package. This helps our local and national network identify our commitment to Southeast Texas. This new logo was chosen because it is sleek, modern, bold, and transitional. It represents a group of women that are diverse, strong, classy, and friendly.

The JLB is proud of its affiliation with other Junior Leagues and is even more proud to be part of the Beaumont Community and to advance women’s leadership through volunteer action, collaboration, and training.

Letter from the President

Dear Members and Supporters of the Junior League of Beaumont,

As the flowers bloom, and the warmth of spring (finally) fills the air, I am delighted to extend a warm welcome to the DWTS edition of our Junior League of Beaumont publication. This season of renewal and growth provides us with the perfect opportunity to reflect on the incredible journey we’ve embarked upon together and express our heartfelt gratitude for your support.

Our League year begins June 1 and extends through the following May 31. I can’t believe I have less than 3 months left to serve as President! It feels like it has gone by way too fast, but as I reflect on all the things we’ve accomplished this year, I am proud of the hard work that has been done – especially thinking about the two activities that includes every member of the Junior League of Beaumont: our winter fundraiser, Main Street Market, and our spring fundraiser, Dancing With the Stars of Southeast Texas.

I am humbled and deeply grateful for the overwhelming response we received to these initiatives. Your enthusiasm, generosity, and unwavering support have exceeded all expectations, and it is because of you that we are able to continue making a meaningful impact in the lives of those we serve.

The success of our fundraisers is a testament to the strength of our community and the collective belief in our mission. Your contributions, whether through attendance, donations, or volunteering your time and talents, have not only helped us raise vital funds but have also reinforced the bonds that unite us as members of the Junior League of Beaumont, both Active and Sustaining Members. We feel especially grateful to those who have become honorary members of our Junior League family: our Star Dancers and Studio Choreographers. These people have been cheerleaders and champions of our mission, and their enthusiasm has been contagious!

In this special issue, you get a peek at our evening of lights, music, and amazing performances. If you were there, I hope these pages remind you of the fun you had and you see your face among the pictures. If you missed it, don’t miss out next year! Save the date for our next Dancing with the Stars of Southeast Texas: March 1, 2025.

As we celebrate the achievements of the past months, we also look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead. The spring season is a time of new beginnings and endless possibilities, and I am excited to see how we will continue to grow and evolve as an organization. Internally, we are gearing up for Placement, where each member will find her volunteer position for the coming year. The money we raised in our fundraisers will advance the goals and initiatives of our next League year and I can tell you, those funds are in good hands.

Our projects, initiatives, and collaborations have already made significant strides in addressing the critical needs in our community. If you haven’t seen the video highlighting our work this year and plans for the future, take a look at our official Facebook page. As always, every dollar helps, so please consider supporting us through a donation on our website www.juniorleaguebeaumont.org

On behalf of the entire Junior League of Beaumont, I extend my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you for your steadfast support and commitment to our cause. Your dedication is the cornerstone of our success, and it is because of you that we can continue to make a positive impact in the lives of those in our community!

Warmly,

Sara Norman

GINGER

What is your title/position at work?

I am the Chair of the Department of Sociology, Social Work, Criminal Justice and Anthropology and Associate Professor of Social Work at Lamar University!

What made you say YES to being a star?

Diana Miles asked me to be a star (who can say no to her?!) plus I love being active and involved in our community.

What are your hobbies and what do you enjoy doing when not working?

When not spending time with my family or walking my dog, I’m an avid fan of Lamar University Athletics, serve as a member of the Board of Directors for several non-profits, volunteer with many local social service agencies and events, cheer on my husband’s soccer team and exercise at the Wellness Center.

What is your favorite thing about living in SETX?

I love this community- the resilience and strength of our residents, businesses, industry and government is truly remarkable. I am honored to work at a local university that is dedicated to supporting our community and creating relationships that strengthen our entire region. We are a community of caring people, amazing food and outstanding leadership.

Miles Haynes

What is your title/position at work?

Assistant to the City Manager/Special Projects

What made you say YES to being a STAR?

I love competition that is connected to a purpose. Junior League is an excellent organization that is creating a bigger purpose for this event. I get an opportunity to bring awareness to mental health and help the community through this competition.

What are your hobbies?

I’m an avid runner. I love spending time with my family and taking trips with my wife (without the kids)! I love researching (YouTube and books) and learning new things!

What is your favorite thing about living in SETX?

As a visionary type person, Beaumont’s untapped potential is my favorite. I see so much happening but am also content with the close community Beaumont provides. The connection Beaumont has to rural areas, the beach and bigger cities is awesome.

Ginger Gummelt DR. GUMMELT & MILES HAYNES

Lacey LeMoine

when not working?

I’m really enjoying this phase in life of watching my kids be involved in sports and dance activities! During the summer you’ll find me in the boat on the river or at the lake.

What is your favorite thing about living in SETX?

I truly love the people of SETX! I’m honored to support organizations that focus on making positive impacts to the businesses and individuals in the community.

Dr. Russell Perry

What is your title/position at work?

I am a Doctor at Family Allergy/Asthma & Aesthetic Laser Center.

What made you say YES to being a star?

This is our first year as empty nesters so I finally have a little free time!

What do you enjoy doing when not working/what are your hobbies?

I enjoy good wine and any place with a beach. I still do a little duck hunting too!

What is your favorite thing about living in SETX?

The water. We live on the bayou and I love being in the boat. You haven’t fully experienced Southeast Texas until you’ve been on the water.

What is your title/position at work?

I am a personal injury trial lawyer and a partner at The Ferguson Law Firm.

What made you say YES to being a star?

I have been to the event several times and watched some of my friends participate. I just could not say “no” to such a fun fundraising event that supports our local community despite the fact I am risking a broken hip with what our talented, but overly confident in me, choreographer has planned!

What are your hobbies/what do you do when not working? Since my work requires me to be indoors, I really enjoy the outdoors when not working. I love all types of boating and also enjoy hiking. I enjoy spending time near our beautiful waterways whether at the beach or nearby lakes and bays. I also have three dogs that keep me busy.

What is your favorite thing about living in SETX?

The resilience and self-reliance of our community is without a doubt my favorite thing about SETX. I was born and raised here so I can say this with authority. Anytime our community faces a challenge, it pulls together in a way that is remarkable. That and crawfish!

Paul Trevino

What is your title/position at work?

I am the President and CEO of Christus Health Southeast Texas.

What made you say YES to being a star?

I agreed to participate because one of my colleagues asked me and I had heard from others that it was a ton of fun. I like to dance so I thought, “Why not?” Also, the Junior League of Beaumont does great work in our community so I wanted to support them!

What are your hobbies/what do you do when not working? I love to play golf, but mostly I love to spend time with my family, our grandkids and our friends. I also love to cook! So it is a great combination.

What is your favorite thing about living in SETX?

I love living in Southeast Texas because of the people, the “can do” spirit and living along the coast. I grew up along the Texas Gulf coast and appreciate the water, the opportunities to be outside and of course the food. We are a great mix of so many rich cultures you can’t help but love the variety of things to do!

Jane Leger LACEY LEMOINE & DR. RUSSELL PERRY JANE LEGER & PAUL TREVINO

Michelle Matheson

What is your title/position at work?

I proudly serve as the Executive Director for the Reaud Guest House, providing low cost overnight accommodations to family members of hospitalized patients or patients receiving outpatient treatments at local medical facilities.

What made you say YES to being a star?

Honestly, because I see the effort of so many Junior League members and I want to honor their commitments. I would always say “yes” because I know that when the JLB works together as a team, we can move mountains!

What are your hobbies and what do you do when not working? I enjoy volunteering for several local organizations, going to live concerts, participating in hot yoga, attending the Symphony, going to Astros games and as many University of Alabama games I can fit in per season with my daughters. I am also a graduate student through the Center for Advances in Port Management at Lamar University.

What is your favorite thing about living in SETX?

Southeast Texas is home to some of the most culturally rich communities and events. As an active member of the Junior League of Beaumont and someone who loves volunteerism, I enjoy experiencing places and people who make the area what it is and to give back to enrich the community for the next generation.

Zach

What is your title/position at work?

I am the Sales Manager for the Beaumont branch of Guild Mortgage.

What is your title and/or position at work?

I work at Alter’s Gem Jewelry as an Expert Level Sales Professional and am also the website liaison.

What made you say YES to being a star?

It is such a huge honor and an easy YES because I love the Junior League of Beaumont and giving back to our community in any way that I can!

What do you do in your free time when you are not working?

I love to travel and I collect art! I am also studying at the Gemological Institute of America for my graduate Gemology degree!

Shawn Webb-Locke

What is your title/position at work?

I am the CEO of the Shawn Sold It Real Estate Team and CEO of Seven Mobile Marketing LLC.

What made you say YES to being a star?

I said yes to being a Star because I understand the importance of the community involvement and leadership of the Junior League of Beaumont. DWTS SETX is a major fundraiser for the organization and I was up for the challenge to help make it a success.

What are your hobbies/what do you do when not working? When not working (which is rare lol), I enjoy spending quality time with my husband and kids, watching football, and attending community events.

What is your favorite thing about living in SETX?

My favorite thing about living in SETX is the hometown feel. Having connections with people in the community is important to running businesses and raising a family.

Lee Potter

What is your title/position at work?

I am the President of American Air Systems.

What made you say yes to being a star?

I said yes to being a STAR because why would you say no?!

It is one of the most prestigious and entertaining events we have in Beaumont; it’s another opportunity to help an organization that does so much for our community; to embarrass my wife (kidding); and for the chance to be a part of the lore of SETX DWTS’s.

What are your hobbies/what do you enjoy doing when not at work?

Our hobbies away from work are enjoying what SETX has to offer. We like to go to dinner with friends and local events. We also love traveling when we can.

What is your favorite thing about living in SETX?

I love the people in SETX. We have been blessed with so many opportunities and we cannot say thank you enough!

Erika Harris

The thing I love most about SETX is the sense of community. Plus I can get to just about anywhere I need to go in 10 minutes.

Lindsay Wortham

What is your title/position at work?

I work as an Occupational Therapist at Calder Woods. I do every type of therapy from outpatient, to rehabilitation to home health so that job never gets old. It is very satisfying helping others be able to live their life again. I have to say I love my job!

What made you say YES to being a star?

It was very easy to say YES to being a star. The Junior League of Beaumont has a special place in my heart. Ever since I moved to Beaumont I have been involved with the league in some capacity. I was an active member for 12 years and now I would say I am an “active” sustainer! The JLB has helped start up so many wonderful organizations and museums in SETX. Without the grants and funding provided by the JLB these organizations would not be possible!

What are some of your hobbies and what do you do when you are not working?

I absolutely love traveling to places where few people have been. Right now I am on a hiking kick. The next trip I have planned is hiking in Alaska. There are some new things I will be trying on this trip-kayaking around glaciers and then strapping on crampons and hiking those glaciers! I enjoy being able to have these experiences with my husband Baylor—this is when he does not leave me behind when I am hiking too slow.

What is your favorite thing about living in SETX?

Beaumont is a great place to raise a family. There are many opportunities for kids to engage in. If they are bored, the beach and lake are less than an hour away for entertainment. Beaumont also has a wonderful art community that continues to expand. We even have our own Symphony and they are fantastic!

FUN FACT: My dance partner Austin Williams is my boss’s husband! His wife Nicole and I share an office so we have plenty of time to discuss DWTS. That is why Nicole has claimed the title “manager” of our team!

Austin Williams

What is your title/position at work?

I am the VP of Marketing and Business Development Finance for First Security Bank. I am also the Founder/Minority Owner of 5 Under Golf Center.

What made you say YES to being a star?

I have been extended invitations for this event repeatedly over the years. What ultimately led me to accept the invitation were 2 factors. First, the support and encouragement from my colleagues at First Security Bank, which was truly overwhelming. Their words of encouragement meant a great deal to me. Additionally, my wife Nicole played a pivotal role in persuading me to participate. Her enthusiasm, along with the added push from Lindsay Wortham, who works alongside her at Calder Woods, left me with no choice but to accept! They didn’t give me an option to decline!

What do you do when you are not at work?

Golf is my life. It’s the magical key that has opened more doors for me than I can count, our family business for 40 years and competitive golf for another 35, the list goes on for days! I’ve also become a full-time golf spectator or “Golf Dad” following my son Reece’s quest for golf world domination. Watching my son compete in golf tournaments all across the country has been a true joy. And of course, I’ve become a professional 2-year old wrangler for my daughter Julia. I look forward to her playing golf as well as she begs me to play with her every day! When I’m not chasing after her sweetness, I’m adventuring with my wife, exploring the world, traveling and exploring new cities, dining at new hot spots and hunting for exciting business opportunities.

What is your favorite thing about living in SETX?

I believe that the majority of people in SETX are resilient, compassionate and hardworking individuals who are always willing to lend a helping hand. The sense of community here is strong and you’ll find people who would give you the shirt off their back. I have lived in other places and people are less inviting. Beaumont doesn’t shun anyone and that includes me! Second, one of the perks of living in this area is the convenience of getting around. Beaumont’s strategic location makes it easy to access neighboring regions. It is also affordable to live in Beaumont. The lower cost of living allows for more financial flexibility and you can achieve your goals and dreams here that might be harder to attain in larger cities. I’ve always taken pride in calling Beaumont my hometown. When I would stand on the first tee and my name would ring out “Now hailing from Beaumont, TX Austin Williams’ the words ‘from Beaumont, TX’ never failed to send goosebumps down my spine.

February 24th at Courtyard Cafe in Groves

JLB & the Rainbow Room assisted boys and girls in foster care with their annual "CPS Prom" event. This included treating the boys to Buffalo Wild Wings, suit fittings from Ortiz Formal Wear, then the Corvette Club took the boys for haircuts and on to the prom at the Courtyard Cafe in Groves. TEA PARTY

SPRING TEA PARTY

Spring (or, in my opinion, anytime), is the perfect time for a tea party! I love a tea party because there are so many ways to customize it to your event or preferences and you can make it as simple or as complicated as you would like.

Tea party food is served on a tiered tray. The first course is served on the bottom tray and consists of sandwiches or savory food. The second course is served on the middle tray and consists of scones with clotted cream and jam. The top tier is sweets or desserts.

Beverages:

Tea is the obvious choice, but mimosas for the adults and juice for the kids is also a fun idea.

Check out the 2nd course Scones with Clotted Cream and Jam recipe on the next page!

SCONE CLOTTED CREAM with

Clotted Cream

(Easy and worth making homemade):

Ingredients:

• 3 oz. cream cheese, softened

• 3 TBS granulated sugar

• A pinch of salt

• 1 cup of whipping cream

Directions:

1. Cream the cream cheese, sugar, and salt in a large mixing bowl

2. Slowly add the whipping cream and whip until stiff peaks form

3. Chill before serving

Scone Ingredients:

• 2 cups (250 grams) all-purpose flour spooned & leveled

• 1/3 cup (65 grams) granulated sugar

• 1 tablespoon baking powder

• 1/2 teaspoon salt

• 6 tablespoons (85 grams) cold unsalted butter cubed into pieces

• 1/2 cup (120 ml) heavy whipping cream plus more for brushing the tops

• 1 large egg

• 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Scone Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (204°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat and set aside.

2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add the cold cubed butter and use a pastry cutter or fork to cut it into the dry ingredients until you have small pea-sized crumbs.

3. In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together the heavy whipping cream, egg, and vanilla extract until fully combined. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. The mixture may be a little crumbly at this point, this is okay!

4. Scoop the mixture out onto a lightly floured surface and work it together in a ball, then flatten into a 7-inch circle. Cut the dough into 8 equal-sized pieces and place them on the prepared baking sheet, making sure to leave a little room between each one.

5. Place the baking sheet in the freezer for 5-10 minutes or until the scones are chilled.

6. Brush the tops of each scone with a little heavy whipping cream.

7. Bake at 400°F (204°C) for 18-22 minutes or until the tops of the scones are lightly browned and cooked through.

8. Remove from the oven and let it cool completely.

Provisional Announcements

Junior League of Beaumont’s Provisional Project: The Provisional Class of 2023-2024 has voted on an awesome project to make an impact - Courtroom Pals! JLB provisionals are partnering with the Jefferson County Courthouse to amplify the waiting room where many await trial. The project also consists of supplying “Joy Bags” filled with items to help the youngest witnesses both before and after they testify, including stuffed animals, fidget toys, and tissues. The Joy Bags are intended to combat anxiety for children, and we hope the newly renovated witness room will create a calmness for the adults. Our provisional class created a list of items needed to make this project possible. Donations were collected with gracious support of donors including JLB Actives, Sustainers, and many anonymous donors in our community. We will begin the remodeling portion of the project at the Jefferson County Courthouse on March 20th and 22nd. The second part of our project will include stuffing and delivering the Joy Bags to the Jefferson County Courthouse in April. Many provisionals have expressed how this project has made them tap into a different level of compassion for circumstances many face in our community that most cannot identify with. #ThisIsWhyWeJLB
