the President
Sara Norman
JLB has a new logo! The Junior League of Beaumont wants to add to our currently used red column logo and include this new addition in our brand package. This helps our local and national network identify our commitment to Southeast Texas. This new logo was chosen because it is sleek, modern, bold, and transitional. It represents a group of women that are diverse, strong, classy, and friendly. The JLB is proud of its affiliation with other Junior Leagues and is even more proud to be part of the Beaumont Community and to advance women’s leadership through volunteer action, collaboration, and training.
Members and Supporters of the Dear Junior League of Beaumont,
Nicki Messina Chair of Transitioning Youth Committee
The start of a new year is not just a change in the calendar; it’s an opportunity for renewal, growth, and a chance to reaffirm our commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of those around us. As we embark on this journey into 2024, we carry with us the spirit of service that defines our organization. The core of our mission has always been rooted in a deep-seated commitment to community betterment. This New Year, I invite each and every one of you to join me in making a resolution – a resolution to give back with even more passion, dedication, and purpose.
Emily Amedee Chair of Healthy Behaviors Committee
This resolution isn’t just about the grand gestures; for us, it’s about the collective impact of every act of JLB. Our leadership team provides the strategic planning and initiatives of our League, our fundraising committees work hard to secure the dollars we need to fund those initiatives, and our committees, in turn, carry out the good work of our plans. No matter the job, each action contributes to the larger tapestry of positive change we weave as the Junior League of Beaumont. As you read on, you’ll find inspiring stories of the impact we’ve made as an organization. I hope these stories serve as a catalyst for your own resolutions, sparking a renewed sense of purpose and determination to give back in ways that resonate with your passions and skills. A special thank you to the authors of these stories, our Community Council: Mallory Cross Community Council Director Michelle Matheson Chair of Abolish Committee

NEW YEAR
NEW READING CHALLENGE
E
ducation and Training has been on their game this year hosting exciting new events that are bringing members together in fun new ways. One event that closed out 2023 was a Book Swap. It was hosted at Headquarters and was a lot of fun. We were asked to bring our favorite book wrapped with three clues that would not give the title away. There were thrillers, romance comedies, and self-help books. Books were picked white elephant style and were able to be stolen 3 times. Watching everyone open their books and read the clues was so much fun. Everyone was trying to figure out the books from the clues before it was revealed. With this event, it brought new ideas for our upcoming issues. We will be introducing our members to JLB’s Books of the Season! Our members are starting strong with some top picks. Grab your Kindles, make your Amazon list, and get ready to read along with JLB.
Self-help:
The Art of Gathering by Priya Parker “The book, “The Art of Gathering” delves into the purpose of bringing people together, going beyond the surface of menus and atmosphere to emphasize the mission of each gathering. It has solidified my understanding of the why and how behind gatherings, inspiring me to explore new directions as well. I would recommend “The Art of Gathering” to anyone who values the significance of bringing people together.”
Sarah Wells
Romance Category:
Yours Truly by Abby Jimenez. “Abby Jimenez has been an auto-buy author for me since her 2019 debut novel, "The Friend Zone.” Jimenez's "Yours Truly" is second in the “Part of Your World” series but can be read as a stand-alone. “Yours Truly” is a SLOW burn, enemies-tolovers romance about two ER doctors, Briana and Jacob. Briana is a strong female character learning to love again post-divorce, while Jacob (the perfect “cinnamon roll” character) is dealing with his social anxiety. With Briana and Jacob, Jimenez has created an adorable love story that is humorous but also touches on some serious topics. Admittedly, it has multiple tropes I typically avoid, but Jimenez made them work in “Yours Truly.” One thing I love about Jimenez's books is you can always count on a happily ever after (and a dog!). I would recommend this book for anyone looking for an easygoing romance, and especially for fans of Emily Henry, Ali Hazelwood, and Christina Lauren. Jimenez doesn't shy away from some tough topics, so while the book is lighthearted overall, you may want to check trigger warnings.”
Sarah Brown
Thriller Category:
The Inmate by Freida McFadden.
Nonfiction:
“I would give this book 4.8 stars! I loved it. As someone that has worked in corrections for the last 4 and a half years in the behavioral health sector, I could not get enough. The twists at the end left me speechless and made me sit and contemplate what I just read. You think that you have it figured out within the first few chapters and then the ending slaps you right in the face!”
Educated by Tara Westover
“This book was an amazing memoir. It follows the childhood and life of someone who was denied education and once she found it, fell in love. If you’ve never read a memoir, it’s a great starter. I had to remind myself throughout the book that it was based on her true-life events. She went through some pretty terrible things to become a scholar. Tara’s story hit home a little harder for me because we’re very close to the same age. I highly recommend it!”

Sci-fi/Fantasy:
A Court of Thorns and Roses Series by Sarah J. Maas “I was never very interested in fantasy or faeries, so I only bought the first book to see if I could get through it... and I have never finished a series more quickly. Sarah's writing style isn't outrageously impressive, but I am hugely attached to the world and characters she built. Considering I'm new to the genre, I was impressed with how easy it was to understand some of the more fantastical content, and even more surprised by the emotional effect the characters had on me. I don't love romance, but the spice sprinkled throughout made it so enjoyable- not to mention the familial relationships that made my heart burst with joy. The action was great and detailed enough that I was actually nervous at times. The storyline is unpredictable in my opinion, which made for an exciting read. I spent every day looking forward to when I'd get to visit their world, sharing laughter and shedding tears alongside some of my favorite characters. I'm not exaggerating when I say I cannot get this series out of my mind. I'm so glad it's unfinished because I can't wait to revisit my newfound friends in Prythian. In fact, I'm such a fan that I'm now in Sarah's second series (very addicted) and am slowly piecing together the glorious multiverse that SJM has created for us.”

Community T
he opportunity to be the Community Council Director for the Junior League of Beaumont is always an honor, but this year feels even more special because of the amazing co-chairs and committees I get to work with. Each chair has gone above and beyond to implement opportunities that have been successful for each placement, but have also found ways to make it their own and bring new ideas to cement their leadership and ideals. They have made sure that the Southeast Texas community is in good hands. I truly feel that each project has gone above and beyond to create a new standard for what can be done, and I am so proud of the opportunities and support they have given to the community.
HEALTHY BEHAVIORS PROJECT PURPOSE:
The committee’s purpose is to aid families in making wholistic lifestyle changes specifically targeting their eating habits and physical fitness. We strive to educate and engage our youth on how to make smart eating choices and incorporate physical activity into their daily lives. The Healthy Behaviors committee hosts programs throughout the year at various locations and events specifically geared towards women and children in Southeast Texas. We hope to empower kids to choose healthy options at school lunch, to choose physical activity over video games, and to say no to alcohol, drugs, and tobacco. We agree with the 5-2-1-0 Plan for daily Healthy Living: • 5 servings of fruits or vegetables • 2 hours or less of recreational screen time • 1 hour or more of physical activity • 0 tolerance for alcohol, drugs, and tobacco Accomplishments: • Met our goal for Market to Hope Food Drive on launch day. • $617 in cash donations and 60+ lbs of physical food donations. • The Healthy Behaviors committee logged 40+ volunteer hours at Market to Hope. • Handed out over 3,000 pieces of fruit at 2 different community events and encouraged kids in Southeast Texas to make healthier choices.

ABOLISH PROJECT PURPOSE:
The mission of the ABOLISH committee is to work in collaboration for the best interests of victims / survivors of human sex trafficking. The committee may collaborate with community partners, such as Harvest House whose mission is to provide a safe environment for long-term care, rehabilitation, and healing for victims of sex trafficking. • Formed a new partnership with Family Services of SETX to expand reach to include assistance to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault - as well as mental health resources. • Hosted 25 attendees for Hair Stylist Bingo to raise community awareness of trafficking and training on signs to look for in the industry. Attendees heard testimony from a guest speaker who was a survivor of sex trafficking. • Formed a new partnership with A21 in the Walk for Freedom to raise awareness of sex trafficking. The Walk for Freedom is a day to take a stand, on a global level, on the issue of trafficking - striving to make changes, one step at a time. • Provided all 26 participants of the Harvest House Thanksgiving meals for their families and then some! • Hosted over 30 people to take the training quiz for the Christmas Polaris Project. Abolish was able to donate over • $200 to the Harvest House for Christmas and raise awareness. • On January 9, 2024, Abolish received a proclamation from the Beaumont City Council proclaiming the month of January as National Human Trafficking Awareness Month. The JLB partnered with the Lake Charles Junior League for Brainstorm at the Border to discuss ways to end trafficking across the Texas/ Louisiana border and beyond.
CAF & PRD PROJECT PURPOSE:
This dual purpose committee oversees the application process, select recipients, and administer CAF (Community Assistance Fund) grant funds. Through the PRD (Project Research & Development) arm, it evaluates the Junior League’s community projects’ effectiveness and sustainability. They seek to fill needs in our community by proposing projects that could be ongoing committee projects or a signature project. • CAF awarded $20,000 in October 2023 and $40,000 in 2024. • From 2021-2023, CAF has awarded $150,000 to invest in nonprofits around the community. • Since 2016, JLB has given away over $250,000 to local nonprofits. • Yearly research is done to make sure that all current projects are aligned with our JLB mission in order to make a difference in the community, and to fill gaps where we can.
TRANSITIONING YOUTH PROJECT PURPOSE:
The committee provides support to help ease the transition out of foster care and prepare youth for independent living. Work with the Court Appointed Special Advocate Association and Staff and Child Protective Services staff for the best interest of abused and neglected children in the foster care system. • Providing crucial information to foster care children about their resources during their stay in foster care and after they age out of the system. • Emphasis on growing self-esteem and positive thinking. • Helping navigate a plan for their future and the different avenues they can take to be successful and independent. • The PAL Resource Fair provided youth with employment training and placement, educational opportunities, financial literacy and budgeting assistance, mental health and wellness services, college admissions information, military recruiters and more. • “Day of Fishing” introduced a positive hobby that the children can use for years to come. • Hosted a Mardi Gras-themed prom where both the girls and boys received a full day of pampering: having their hair done, manicures, professional makeup, and picking out formal wear. The guys rode in corvettes to the prom and danced the night away. The community came together for this event and showered these kids with endless kind gestures. • Hosted a formal shoe drive.
SERVICE SQUAD PROJECT PURPOSE:
Service Squad supports the JLB’s community partners by providing skilled volunteers for projects and events that further the mission of the JLB. Service Squad serves as a way for the JLB to be more visible in the community and give community volunteers more options and flexibility to complete their placement. Service Squad provides a structure to explore, develop, and examine potential new projects and continue to support projects that do not need a full committee placement. The Service Squad Committee has liaison positions to support specific community partners, such as the Beaumont Children’s Museum and Make-A-Wish. • Service Squad continued to volunteer in various activities with organizations throughout Southeast Texas, including: • Botanical Gardens • Girls’ Haven • Arc of Beaumont • Market to Hope • Beaumont Farmers Market • Beaumont Children’s Museum • Make-A-Wish • Evangeline’s Stockings • College Street Nursing Home • Night To Shine – Tim Tebow Foundation • 3 Bros. Running Group -5 Ks • Nutrition and Services for Seniors • Stable Spirit • CASA The 2023-2024 Service Squad season included volunteer activities at the below organizations for the 1st time: • Shine on Summer Carnival Event June 2023 – Tim Tebow Foundation • Pumpkin Walk at John Jay French House with Beaumont Heritage Society • Cattle Baron’s Ball • Special Angels Rodeo • Hosted a community-wide Make-A-Wish info session and training.
THE O.N.E. PROJECT PURPOSE:
The O.N.E. (Our Nonprofits Elevated) Signature Project committee partners with a carefully selected nonprofit, for the term of one league year, allowing opportunities for League resources to assist the non-profit to reach its fullest potential. By selecting and supporting a new nonprofit each year, the Junior League of Beaumont can maximize the impact, create leadership opportunities for members and cultivate long lasting relationships in the community. • For 2023-2024, the O.N.E. partnered with Make Ends Meet, an organization whose mission is to support single parent families in Southeast Texas. • The O.N.E. assisted Make Ends Meet with a rebrand, including a new logo. • Make Ends Meet is developing a strategic plan and Board development tools with the help of Junior League expertise. • Make Ends Meets hosted an Angel Tree for Christmas and exceeded their goal, so they were able to double the amount of gifts given to each child. The total amount raised was $2,261.80. • Make Ends Meet participated in the Fire Museum and Beaumont PD Trunk or Treat Events in October. • Make Ends Meet partnered with Beaumont ISD for a Backpack Drive in July. Gave away over 200 backpacks with supplies tailored for each grade level. Plans to continue this event yearly. • The O.N.E. partnered with the Beaumont Farmers Market in its inaugural year of 2022-2023. The JLB members helped to implement the SNAP Program, increase volunteerism, and spread awareness of the Beaumont Farmers Market’s services and programs.

What’s the best vacation you’ve ever been on?
What is a unique fun fact about you that some may not know?
It’s hard to pick just one! I really enjoyed our family vacation to California this past summer. It was a group of 16 of us exploring LA, great scenic drives, and going to Disneyland. A lot of great memories were made.
I’ve seen over 50 Broadway shows/tours. I love going to the theater and seeing a new show or getting to see one of my favorites again!
What would be the first thing you’d do if you won the lottery?
Do it! I originally joined because my sister, Krystal Sanchez, is a member and had said so many good things about it. I like to volunteer so I figured I would join the league and see what it was about. Though I haven’t been with the league very long, I have met so many incredible women and learned so much about myself. It has been a rewarding experience and would encourage those thinking of joining to try it out!
Plan a trip around the world going to the four tennis Grand Slams. What is your favorite thing about living in SETX?
The people and sense of community. I recently moved back to the area 2 years ago and have met so many great people. I also enjoy there not being so much traffic.

This is not a simple answer. As a Preacher’s kid, I partially grew up in Wichita Falls and Beaumont. Beaumont is where I graduated HS and returned to after 20 years however.
What made you decide to join the Junior League of Beaumont?
When we moved back to Beaumont I knew I wanted to be involved in the community. Growing up, I remember hearing my mom’s friends talk about being in the league and it always sounded so fun. Since I am not actively using my degree in social work for employment, serving in the League fulfills the need and desire I have to serve others. What is the best piece of advice you’ve received?
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Lubbock Christian University Family
Husband, Josh Ingram, his dad was our HS principal. We have 3 kids, Carter age 15, Easton age 8 and Torin age 4 Pets

My kid’s hobbies seem to take up my hobby time these days which is fine with me as I so enjoy watching them do what they love. One day I will have time so sit back down on the piano again and play.
Trust God. Those two words sound so simple but seem so incredibly difficult to achieve. There have been several times over the past 4 years where the only thing I could do was to trust God. How do you like to relax after a long day?
If I have time to turn on the TV, most likely it will be tuned to an episode of Dateline, Snapped, or a similar true crime show. Where is the most interesting place you’ve been?
I went on a Mission Trip to Brazil when I was 17 and had the opportunity to take an overnight Amazon River Cruise, swim in the Rio Negro and hike the Rainforest. I also was able to hold a baby sloth which had been a dream of mine since 3rd grade. What are some of your favorite restaurants in town?
I have always loved Novrosky’s. I ate there with my family every Saturday when I was in high school. Frankie’s is my second favorite. What is your favorite holiday, and how do you celebrate it?
Christmas is my favorite. It is always spent with family but every other year is with my mom and Step-father, and the other years are with my in-laws. Christmas was dad’s favorite holiday as well. What’s the most spontaneous thing you’ve done in your life?
I dropped out of Texas A&M after 2 years and applied to be a Flight Attendant. I went to the open “cattle call” auditions and was one of the lucky very few to be hired by Continental. Who would you want to play you in a movie?
Sarah Michelle Gellar because Buffy The Vampire Slayer was my favorite tv show.

What is your current placement this year?
Healthy Behaviors, 5210. I absolutely love this group and our wonderful leaders in it that keep us so involved in the community! We partner with Beaumont farmer’s market as well as Market to Hope. These are just a few of the organizations were involved with. What is your favorite thing about living in SETX?
I honestly wanted to move out of the area for the longest time and go off to school. The very last minute I decided to switch to Lamar University and was only going to stay there for a short period of time. Unexpectedly I fell in love with SETX and Lamar University and am still here 8 years later. I learned so much about the community and passion people have for our area. The more I got involved at Lamar and in the Junior League I noticed how much love and time people put into making SETX a better place for all of us to live. I admire how much everyone contributes to our community and genuinely helps each other for the greater good. I thought to myself this is something I want to continuously be a part of. I also enjoy spending time with my family on my days off and those are the days I learn the most about them. I also love to go run errands anywhere and everywhere! What is the best vacation you’ve been on?
The best vacation I ever went on was a trip to Italy I took with my friend. I was 20 years old and we were at work and decided it would be fun to go to Rome and booked our tickets that day. I remember I got home that day and told my parents I booked a trip to Rome in a few months. They were just as surprised as I was especially because I was not even allowed to drive to Houston at the time...haha. That was the first time I did something on my own and really enjoyed the culture, the art and the food. I always said that was my impromptu study abroad trip I did in college and I didn’t have to be graded on it which was a perk. I also was allowed to drive to Houston after that trip for those wondering. What is a unique fun fact about you that some may not know?
I was adopted from Bulgaria when I was almost 4. It was and will always be the best thing that ever happened to me.

Reading, going to any beach but Crystal beach will always have special place in my heart. I also enjoy spending time with family and friends, bike rides and eating tacos.
What’s one thing that can instantly make your day better?
Spending time with family and friends. No matter what the day brings I always know I have that support to be able to laugh, cry and just be me. What would be the first thing you’d do if you won the lottery?
This is my favorite question to think on! First, I would not tell anyone and then do really nice things for people and they not know where it came from. I would also help the adoption center where I am from. What would you tell someone who is interested in joining the league?
I would tell them this is a great opportunity to be a part of a group that really wants to improve their community and it is not just a title for us to have on a resume. It is a great network of women to have throughout different stages of your life to help you grow in your personal life and possibly in your career. We love what we do, and you can see the passion through every meeting and event we have. You also get to learn more about the community and how we can help grow it.
AJLI ODI MEETING Written by Cheri Dickerson
n our ongoing commitment to Ileadership providing members with the best training and development,
the Junior League of Beaumont has invested in several conferences presented by the Associations of Junior Leagues International (AJLI). AJLI offers JLB the opportunity to collaborate with every Junior League in the world – over 295! Their purpose is to add value to its member Leagues in their fulfillment of the Junior League mission: to advance women’s leadership for meaningful community impact through volunteer action, collaboration and training. Most recently, on November 3-5, 2023, AJLI hosted the Organizational Development Institute meeting (ODI) in Washington, D.C. The meeting was held in-person for the first time in three years and it was wonderful to be able to get together with other leagues to collaborate and have face-to-face discussions. JLB sent four women to the conference; there were more than 350 women from over 30 states in attendance. Organizational Development Institutes are AJLI leadership development meetings that provide Junior League members with missionbased training in key areas critical to the healthy functioning of a League. At ODIs, delegates build organizational capacity by learning about:
“
Collaborating with and learning from other Leagues ensures that the Junior League of Beaumont is fresh and relevant with issues facing like-communities.
”
• Innovative approaches to developing Junior League members as effective volunteer leaders in their communities • Powerful ways to design community programs and partnerships that have significant impact • Strategies for sustainable and diversified fund development • Keys to building strong internal operational controls • New approaches that enable the League to be governed strategically and effectively • Ways to build relationships, engagement and understanding through marketing and communications • Leading The Junior League to be more diverse and inclusive ODIs also provide a unique opportunity to meet members of other Leagues and share/discuss best practices. The topics covered at meetings of this size are focused on marketing and branding, DEIBA , Mission-Based Recruitment, using collaborations, fund development, finance, membership growth and retention strategies, sustainer engagement, high school league programming, utilizing social media, and what makes a good community impact project.
Also included were leadership skills for members: public speaking, creating friendships, interpersonal communication skills, planning effective meetings, preparing yourself for leadership. The best thing about ODIs? There is something for everyone: whether members are interested in learning what is going on within the AJLI, or members who are serving, about to serve, or are interested in leadership roles within their league, or members who are interested in organizational development, professional development, and learning to be an effective community leader. Collaborating with and learning from other Leagues ensures that the Junior League of Beaumont is fresh and relevant with issues facing like-communities. It was at a 2021 conference that the Junior League of Beaumont connected with the Junior League of Lake Charles. See the fruits of that collaborative relationship on page 24!

Through their efforts, JLB has identified 4 primary reasons our members feel fulfilled in the League and continue to be involved: • • • •
Leadership Development Professional Networking Community Impact Social Expansion
In this third installment of our four-part series, we explore the most outward-facing element of the Junior League: our Community Impact.
The Heart of JLB: Community Engagement Over half of our members serve on a community project committee as their full-time placement, meaning they commit to at least 40 hours of volunteer time for the year in their community project. In its newest Value of Volunteer Time report, Independent Sector, with the Do Good Institute, announced that the latest value of a volunteer hour in Texas is estimated to be

$29.86.1 That means that the Junior League expects to contribute over $88,000 in value to our community in volunteer hours alone! Couple that with our financial investment in our community projects (over $75,000), and we have allocated over $165,000 in actual dollars and volunteer value for the 2023-2024 League year. This year, we are championing the following Community Projects: Community Project: ABOLISH Project Purpose: The mission of the ABOLISH committee is to work in collaboration for the best interests of victims / survivors of human sex trafficking. The committee may collaborate with community partners, such as Harvest House whose mission is to provide a safe environment for long-term care, rehabilitation, and healing for victims of sex trafficking. Community Partners: Harvest House, Garth House, The Office of the Texas Governor, Beaumont Police Department
Community Project:
Transitioning Youth
Project Purpose: The committee provides support to help ease the transition out of foster care and prepare youth for independent living. Work with the Court Appointed Special Advocate Association and Staff and Child Protective Services staff for the best interest of abused and neglected children in the foster care system. Community Partners: CASA of Southeast Texas, CPS Community Project: The O.N.E Signature Project Project Purpose: The O.N.E. (Our Nonprofits Elevated) Signature Project committee partners with a carefully selected nonprofit, for the term of one league year, allowing opportunities for League resources to assist the non-profit to reach its fullest potential. By selecting and supporting a new nonprofit each year, the Junior League of
Beaumont can maximize the impact, create leadership opportunities for members and cultivate long lasting relationships in the community. Community Partners: Make Ends Meet, Inc. Community Project:
Healthy Behaviors
Project Purpose: The committee’s purpose is to aid families in making wholistic lifestyle changes specifically targeting their eating habits and physical fitness. We agree with the 5-2-1-0 Plan for daily Healthy Living: • 5 servings of fruits or vegetables • 2 hours or less of recreational screen time • 1 hour or more of physical activity • 0 tolerance for alcohol, drugs, and tobacco Community Partners: Market to Hope
Community Project: Service Squad
Project Purpose: Service Squad supports the JLB’s community partners by providing skilled volunteers for projects and events that further the mission of the JLB. Community Partners: Beaumont Botanical Gardens, Girls’ Haven, Arc of Beaumont, Beaumont Farmers Market, Beaumont Children’s Museum, Make-A-Wish, Evangeline’s Stockings, College Street Nursing Home, Night To Shine – Tim Tebow Foundation, 3 Bros. Running Group, Nutrition and Services for Seniors, Stable Spirit Community Project: Community Assistance Fund/ Project Research & Development Project Purpose: This dual-purpose committee oversees the application
process, selects recipients, and administers CAF (Community Assistance Fund) grant funds. Through the PRD (Project Research & Development) arm, it evaluates the Junior League’s community projects’ effectiveness and sustainability. They seek to fill needs in our community by proposing projects that could be ongoing committee projects or a signature project. Fall 2023 Grant Recipients: Beaumont Art League, Boys and Girls Club of Deep East Texas, Christus Health Foundation of SETX, Greater Orange Area Literacy Services, Hardin County Christian Care Center, Jackson Community Center, Nutrition and Services for Seniors, Orangefield Elementary, Sabine Neches Chapter Texas Masters Naturalist, Shorkey Center, Some Other Place, Southeast Texas Family Resource Center, Southeast Texas Nonprofit Development Center, Texas Christian Professional Women Network, The H.O.W Center, The Hughen Center DBA Bob Hope School. Members at the Forefront of Change Members of the Junior League aren’t just passive participants; they are the driving force behind our community projects. Take a look at these meaningful experience’s members gained through their involvement in community programs.
Meredith Youngson Service Squad My experience with Service Squad has been so rewarding. Through Junior League and other ladies with the goal of bettering the community around them, I have learned about and been able to volunteer with so many organizations that I otherwise may have never heard of before. My 1st year as provisional, I learned about and attended an event at the Arc of Beaumont, an organization that works with people with special needs. Ever since that event, I have been passionate about volunteering with Arc of Beaumont. I saw a place where members could come together and just be themselves and have a great time with their friends. It was just a party, no pressures from the outside, no concerns of bullying or people not understanding them, just full-on inclusion. The smiles on the members' faces were pure joy. Ultimately, I like knowing, seeing, and being part of the difference that the Junior League is making in the community.
Arquellle Gilder Service Squad I have gained some great experiences while being in the JLB. One of my most favorite experiences has been volunteering for the Night to Shine Prom event with the Tim Tebow Foundation. It caters to special needs and those with disabilities ranging in age from 14 to elderly. I volunteered as a buddy to accompany 2 guests to the event which included them getting their shoes shined, a luxury limo ride, walking down the red carpet, and hitting the dance floor until we sweated. My favorite part was teaching my buddy Allen who was blind how to Dougie and Cupid Shuffle. We had such a blast and I enjoyed seeing the smiles on their faces from the great time they were having. I’d do it again a million times more.

Michelle Matheson Abolish The knowledge and experience I have gained from the Abolish Committee has been eye-opening. The goal of this committee is to promote community awareness of sex trafficking and to advocate for victims. This year we hosted our very first summit called Brainstorm at the Border with Lake Charles Junior League with a shared purpose to eradicate trafficking at the Texas/ Louisiana border. We learned the signs and red flags of what to look for, how to gather information, and how to report it to the right authorities. So many people are unaware that this is happening right here and with the misconceptions of trafficking, it is important to know the signs and the red flags. That is why we believe in sharing “if you see something say something” that we can help prevent trafficking in our community.

Tackles Human Trafficking at "Brainstorm at the Border" Summit By Lauren Graham
I
n a powerful display of community resolve, the Junior League of Beaumont hosted its inaugural "Brainstorm at the Border" summit, tackling the urgent issue of human trafficking at the Texas-Louisiana border. The Abolish Committee, spearheading the effort, partnered with the Junior League of Lake Charles, Harvest House, the Beaumont Police Department, and a diverse range of stakeholders to brainstorm proactive solutions for eradicating this insidious crime. The summit marked a critical step in recognizing the unique vulnerabilities of the Texas-Louisiana border region. Interstate 10, a major artery through the area, sadly functions as a conduit for traffickers. But "Brainstorm at the Border" beats with an energy of collaboration and determination. Law enforcement and victim advocates provided crucial insights into the complex patterns of trafficking. Representatives from non-profit organizations like Harvest House shared their groundbreaking work in supporting survivors and raising awareness. The Junior League members, known for their dedication to community service, brought their fresh perspectives and organizational prowess to the table. Together, these diverse voices ignited a cascade of innovative ideas. Among the key initiatives discussed were: • Cross-border collaboration: Recognizing the lack of jurisdictional boundaries for traffickers, the summit
24
SPINNINGS | SPRING 2024
emphasized the need for closer coordination between Texas and Louisiana law enforcement agencies and social service providers. • Community education: Raising awareness amongst vulnerable populations and the public was identified as an essential preventative measure. Educational workshops and campaigns designed to educate potential victims and empower bystanders to report suspicious activity were proposed. • Economic empowerment: Recognizing that economic vulnerability often makes individuals susceptible to trafficking, the summit explored initiatives to provide survivors with job training and financial support, enabling them to reclaim their lives and rebuild their independence. • Legislative advocacy: Recognizing the need for comprehensive legal frameworks to combat trafficking, the summit explored avenues for advocating for stronger antitrafficking legislation at both state and federal levels. "Brainstorm at the Border" transcended the confines of a oneday event. It ignited a movement, fostering a spirit of collaboration and commitment to eradicating human trafficking. The Junior League of Beaumont, along with its partners, has planted a seed of hope, proving
that a collective effort can indeed rewrite the narrative of this border region, transforming it from a conduit for exploitation into a beacon of protection and empowerment. The summit's success lies not only in the resolutions forged, but also in the sheer power of its united front. "Brainstorm at the Border" showcased the unwavering spirit of the Junior League of Beaumont, their unwavering commitment to justice, and their inspiring ability to mobilize a community for a cause that transcends borders and unites hearts. This is just the beginning. The "Brainstorm at the Border" has sown the seeds of a movement, and the time for action is now. As the Junior League of Beaumont, along with its partners, marches forward, the Beaumont-Lake Charles region stands poised to become a model for border communities combating human trafficking, showcasing the transformative power of collaboration and unwavering spirit.
PROVISIONAL CORNER November Provisional Event Date: November 3, 2023 Location: Cattail Marsh Theme: Provisional Super Saturday Hosted by: Mattie Beaver and Stephanie Cassels Overview of Event: Super Saturday has traditionally been a day of team building and giving the provisionals an opportunity to build relationships within their class. This year we took our event to the great outdoors and enjoyed all the beauty that Cattail Marsh has to offer! We were able to start the day with a brief yoga session led by one of our very own provisionals, Juliana Davila. From there we did vision boards of #whyiJLB and the ladies got to go on a tour of the marsh where they competed in a scavenger hunt. It was a special day where we got to slow down and enjoy each other's company! Thank you to the Convention & Visitors Bureau of Beaumont for providing this opportunity and giving us a beautiful setting for our Super Saturday!
January Provisional Event Date: January 9, 2024 Location: Garth House Children Advocacy Center Theme: Taco Tuesday Hosted by: Courtney White, Sara Carson, Lisa Cardenas, Michelle Domingue, Melissa McHaney, Paige Reed, and Britney White Overview of Event: Garth House, whom our League assisted back in 1990, opened their doors to our Provisionals for our January meeting. It was a great opportunity for the Provisionals to see the play therapy room that was recently redone thanks to the CAF grant Garth House received! When the meeting started, their provisional project took center stage and no time was wasted! They were able to get everyone assigned to a committee of their choosing and all chair positions for the project were filled before the meeting was closed! The room was full of excitement and plans were made for committees to meet outside of their monthly meetings so that the project can stay on task!
December Provisional Event Date: December 11, 2023 Location: Mattie Beaver’s Home Theme: Merry Mixer Christmas Party Hosted by: Membership Development Committee Overview of Event: We wrapped up 2023 with a cup of cheer and got to celebrate the most wonderful time of year together! The committee wanted to honor our provisionals and all their greatness with a Christmas mixer! Prior to the meeting the provisionals voted on their provisional project and we were able to make the special announcement at the party. There is such a fantastic level of energy and positivity that continues to be served by our Provisional Class and we are so proud of them!

Provisional Project: “Courtroom Pals”
The Junior League of Beaumont Provisionals is currently hosting a project called "Courtroom Pals." They are partnering with the Jefferson County Courthouse to provide witness bags filled with stuffed animals and other stress relief items for child witnesses who have to testify in court. These children have the opportunity to bring the stuffed animal and bags home with them. In addition, the project involves making updates to the Child Witness Waiting Room, where children often have to wait for extended periods, sometimes up to 2-3 days. To enhance the waiting room, the Junior League of Beaumont Provisionals has assessed its current offerings and has developed a donation list of items that can be donated to update the room. The purpose of this project is to create a stress-free environment for children who are asked to testify, allowing them to feel comfortable and relaxed as they wait. If you would like an itemized list of donations, Please reach out to Paige Reed or Taylor Herring, the chair and co-chair of the Courtroom Pals Project.

I
may be partial, as I am half-Cuban myself, but if you have never tried Cuban food, you are missing out. Ropa Vieja is my fathers favorite dish, as well as one of the most popular Cuban dishes. You normally would eat this with white rice and black beans on the side.
INGREDIENTS:
Preparation:

In a casserole place meat, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, cover with water and bring to a boil. Simmer over low heat for 2 1/2 to 3 hours or until meat is very tender. ( Use a pressure cooker to reduce cooking time). Remove meat from pan and shred using two table forks . You should end up with fine meat threads. Do not discard the water or beef stock. To a pan, add 2tbs. of olive oil and sauté the onion and green pepper until the onions are translucent. Add the garlic, tomatoes, bay leaf paprika, cooking wine, 1/2 tsp of salt and 1/4 tsp of pepper. Cook for a few minute until tomatoes are soft. Add the beef stock , 1/2 sweet pimento chopped, bread crumbs and finally the shredded beef. Simmer over low heat for another 25 minutes, stir occasionally. Adjust for salt and pepper.

id-year check in- “The O.N.E. committee has been working hard to work with Make Ends Meet on developing their Strategic Plan and strengthen the organization for the future. Make Ends Meet has already successfully hosted a Backpack Drive in partnership with Beaumont ISD and an Angel Tree Christmas Drive where they doubled the expected amount of donations. They've also leveraged community partnerships for other events in order to reach a larger amount of the SETX community. We look forward to working with them further in the Spring on establishing projects such as a parent support group.” The application deadline for next year’s The O.N.E. project is February 23, 2024. “
Sharon was my Sustaining Advisor for Headquarters this year. When I asked her to serve, she litterally jumped for joy and laughed out loud. She loved the Junior League and was so pleased to be a part of the league this year in a wonderful role to guide us. She was gracious, beautiful, and gave amazing advice. I am blessed to have known her and even more thankful for her as an advisor. 35
