Members have been busy planning and preparing for this year all summer! It has been exciting to see all the League’s work in the first few months of the League year.
We wouldn’t be here without many ladies before us making history and making a pathway for us to continue the League’s legacy. We celebrate 75 years of women working to create a better community for all that live here, and cheers to many more years of giving back to Southeast Texas!
We had our first general meeting in August. Meeting Arrangements set the tone for the year with a great garden party. It was wonderful to see members back together in person using safety precautions or on Zoom, as we continue to monitor COVID and want to keep everyone safe. Plants from sustainers’ gardens were taken home and rocks were painted to make the botanical gardens beautiful. The provisional class is busy and has forty-one ladies ready to learn about the League. They are beginning to complete the requirements and plan for a provisional project. Under the leadership of Tea Do and her committee, they will be ready in May to become active members! COVID didn’t stop our fundraisers last year, and because of your hard work and the work of many years past, we will grant $75,000 in Community Assistance Fund grants. The committee is taking applications until Oct 1 for fall grants, so please

y name is Christina Majdalani Lokey. My husband, JT, and I are proud to call Beaumont our home and are lucky to have both our families nearby. We have two dogs, Beatrice and Mowgli, whom we love to spoil a little too much. I graduated from Kelly High School in 2006 and went on to receive my bachelor’s degree in business administration at The University of Georgia. I continued my education by attending culinary school at the Art Institute of Atlanta. I currently work for the Beaumont Convention and Visitors Bureau as the Marketing and Tourism Director. This is my first active year in Junior League and my placement is on the Meeting Arrangements committee. My day begins with a large cup of coffee to try to wake up my brain and head to the office. You can ask my team to back me up on this, but the number of emails that I receive is staggering, so I try to chip away at those to start the morning. Then, I go in to check our

Then, it is non-stop from there. Every day is different, but the common theme is that my team and I are working to better Beaumont! A huge part of my job is being out and about and if I’m not out, you will usually find me in meetings with local partners. I meet with everyone from non-profits, event planners, museum directors, business owners, city departments, and more. If I’m in the office, you can find me at 505 Willow Street, at the Beaumont Convention and Visitors Bureau office. It’s a great spot to start a bike ride with our new Beaucycles or bring family and friends to get resources to find things to do. Since traveling has slowed down, we have rolled

out more community initiatives this past year. Some of the programs you might recognize are the ArTaco Festival, Restaurant Week, Cajun Trail, Geocaching, Localist Program, Beaulympics, Birdie Passports, and a slew of things happening at Cattail Marsh Wetlands. Even in a pandemic year, tourism attributed $315 million in visitors’ spending, which is essential for Beaumont’s growth and our local economy. Simply put, more visitors equal more money that goes back into the community, and my job is to create a marketing strategy that does just that. After a long day of meetings and being out, my favorite thing is to have a nice quiet night at home. You can find me watching Ted Lasso for the fifteenth time or playing video games with JT. I also like to cook, but you won’t find me cleaning. For someone who is always going, I cherish the down time and enjoy picking up a book.

& Halloween Day of the Dead HALLOWEEN HISTORY hile the true origin of Halloween is debated, it likely dates back to the ancient Celts two W thousand years ago. Across different regions it was generally seen as a celebration of the end of summer and the harvest and entry into the cold, dark winter months—and a time when the
fabric between the live and the spiritual worlds is at its most fragile. Many of the season’s traditions come from this history: apple bobbing, bonfires, and pumpkins celebrate autumn and harvest, as does going door to door collecting provisions (in this case, candy); while ghost stories, witches, séances, and all things paranormal stem from the belief that the supernatural connection is strongest this time of year—and wearing costumes is meant to ward off these spirits.
WAYS TO CELEBRATE • • • •
Scary movie marathon – the Halloween and Paranormal Activity series are top hits – to be interspersed with classics like Hocus Pocus or Beetlejuice Trick or treating – while the “trick” side of things is dying down, candy sales show no signs of stopping Carving jack-o-lanterns Costume parties
FUN FACTS • • • • • • • • •
The first time the White House was decorated for Halloween was by Mamie Eisenhower in 1958 Halloween features a full moon every nineteen years (the last one was in 2020) Jack-o-lanterns were originally carved from potatoes and turnips Seeing a spider on Halloween is a symbol of good luck! According to tradition, sprinkling salt at your doorstep will keep evil spirits at bay The world’s longest haunted house is a cave in Ohio, located 80 feet underground and spanning 3,564 feet Only one holiday surpasses Halloween in annual consumer sales: you guessed it, Christmas Silly string is banned in California on Halloween The proper spelling is Hallowe’en—a contraction of All Hallows Even (Evening)
D ÍA DE (LOS) MUERTOS / DAY OF THE DEAD HISTORY ay of the Dead traces its history to the Aztec culture, as an honor to the Aztec god D Mictlantecuhtli, to celebrate the dead, and to allow them to visit the living. While it’s called Day of the Dead, it’s actually a two-day celebration: it is believed that on November 1st, the souls of departed children are able to visit as angelitos and on November 2nd, it’s the adults’ turn to return as difuntos. The holiday is one of celebration, not mourning, and is full of vibrant colors and the sharing of memories.
TRADITIONS • • • • • •
Building altars, called ofrendas, with offerings to deceased loved ones’ souls. An ofrenda should have four components: fire, water, earth, and wind Reading letters and poems to deceased family and friends or telling jokes or recounting anecdotes about them Decorating using marigolds—their bright color and strong scent are guides for the spirits, luring them from their place of rest Eating pan de muerto, a Mexican sweet bread made just for the holiday Painting and decorating sugar skulls, vibrant and flower-covered skulls meant to celebrate death instead of showcasing fear Cleaning graves at cemeteries, to prepare for a spirit’s crossing to the earthly realm
HOW BEST TO CELEBRATE San Antonio has one of the largest Day of the Dead celebrations in the nation, running from October 26 to November 3 throughout downtown. Themed barges pass along the Riverwalk on a river parade, Coco screens for free, and Mexican and Mexican-American chefs delight the palate. Live music, folk art, and cultural education abound.

Transitioning Youth Chair Spotlight: Brooke Morrow Transitioning Youth Co-Chair Spotlight: Shaina Escobedo-Milan Tell us about yourself! My name is Brooke Morrow and I am from Beaumont, Texas. I attended the University of Alabama and I am the Executive Director for the Reaud Guest House. Tell us about your time in the League. This is my third year serving in the Junior League of Beaumont. Some of my placements have included: Transitioning Youth Chair, Headquarters Committee Member - In League Placement, Marketing Committee Member - In League Placement, Project Research Development & CAF Committee Member - In-League Placement. Why do you have an interest in Transitioning Youth? As a former CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate), I understand the importance of mentors to youth in the foster care system. I feel most children lack the opportunity to learn day-to-day life skills for “adulting” and are thrown into the real world with no direction. I am excited to have this placement and look forward to the committee providing educational seminars and gatherings the youth will remember for many years. What are your goals for this year’s Transitioning Youth committee? I’d like to hold at least six monthly gatherings to provide support and education to the youth in the Preparation for Adult Living program, focusing on life skills. What are some upcoming projects for this year’s Transitioning Youth? Projects and topics will include: college application and financial aid process, resume building and interviewing, workplace survival skills, financial literacy, home economics, health, and wellness. Share some successes from last year’s projects! Despite dealing with a pandemic last year, the Transitioning Youth committee hosted several monthly events. The event program topics included healthy relationships, balancing nutritional needs, financial literacy, basic car maintenance, business etiquette, etc. Our youth were able to interact with their peers, socially distanced, while learning imperative life skills. At the end of the year, TYC members were able to attend a graduation celebration for the seniors participating in the program.

Tell us about yourself! My name is Shaina M. Escobedo-Milan. I grew up in Port Arthur, Texas, but currently live in Port Neches, Texas with my wonderful husband, Austin Milan. I attended Lamar University and earned my bachelor’s degree in Marketing from the College of Business. Currently, I am the president of Beaumont’s chapter of LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens), a board member on HPAC (Hispanic Proactive Coalition), and serve as the Chapter Advisor of Lamar’s chapter of Alpha Chi Omega, in addition to being cochair of JLB’s Transitioning Youth committee. Why do you have an interest in Transitioning Youth? One of my passions is helping those around me, and this includes developing young leaders and preparing our youth to be the next generation that will contribute to society. Transitioning Youth was one of the committees that I felt would allow me to fully utilize my skills in the League and our community. What are your goals for this year’s Transitioning Youth committee? I am a true believer that education is power, and the more informed a person is the more successful they can be. Overall, I think the committee wants to do the best it possibly can in helping the transitioning youth have the most success they can on their own. This includes introducing them to the right people and organizations that can be a resource to them even after they are transitioned, and informing and educating the youth so that they are better equipped to face the world on their own.

MAKE WISHES COME TRUE a village to make dreams come true and this year, Ithetfivetakes Junior League “wish granters” are working to make magic happen. “Our goals for this year include increasing the number of wish granters through JLB to be able to help more kids get their wishes granted,” Make-A-Wish liaison Amber Villarreal says. The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children who are diagnosed with a critical illness. According to the nonprofit’s website, “a wish can be that spark that helps these children believe that anything is possible and gives them the strength to fight harder against their illnesses.” Junior League has been a proud supporter of the MakeA-Wish Foundation, and representatives from the League were working hard this summer to make wishes come true. “JLB was part of four kids’ wishes over the summer, sending two kids to the beach, one to a dude ranch, and another to Tennessee,” Villarreal explains. Make-A-Wish Texas Gulf Coast and Louisiana has granted more than 9,000 wishes since its inception in 1984. “We seek to bring every eligible child's wish to life because a wish is an integral part of a child's treatment journey. Research shows children who have wishes granted can build the physical and emotional strength they need to fight their illness,” Villarreal says. There is some special training involved in becoming a wish granter. Virtual training will be held the first Tuesday of every month from 5-6:30 pm. Three Junior League representatives will also be volunteering at the Lamborghini Club of Houston on October 2, for its annual gala. All the proceeds from the silent auction and live auction will go back to the Make-AWish Foundation.

or lovers of the fall season, anything “pumpkin spice” is a necessity. From pumpkin coffee concoctions that warm us up, to spice scented candles that fill our homes with the essence of fall, we love a good pumpkin spice ANYTHING! This made-fromscratch pumpkin spice bundtini recipe by the Barefoot Contessa, Ina Garten, is filled with the best flavors of the fall season. It has that nostalgic flavor combination that we all crave this time of year and it’s topped with the most decadent maple cream cheese frosting. There is no doubt that this dessert will be the highlight of your fall holiday gatherings.
Bundtini ingredients: • • • • • • • • • • • •
½ cup vegetable oil, plus extra for greasing the pan 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 tsp. baking powder ½ tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. ground cinnamon ½ tsp. ground ginger ½ tsp. ground nutmeg ½ tsp. salt 2 large eggs 1 cup canned pumpkin purée (not pie filling) ½ cup granulated sugar ½ cup light brown sugar
Frosting ingredients: • • • • • •
6 oz. cream cheese, at room temperature 3 tbsp. unsalted butter, at room temperature 2 tbsp. pure maple syrup ½ tsp. pure vanilla extract 2 cups sifted confectioners’ sugar ½ cup coarsely chopped Heath bars, to sprinkle on top
Instructions :
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease the inside of the mini bundt pan(s) with vegetable oil. In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and salt. In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, pumpkin, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and the ½ cup vegetable oil. Add in the flour mixture and stir together to combine. Scoop the batter into the prepared mini bundt pans and bake for 20-25 minutes.
“
FOR LOVERS OF THE FALL SEASON... WE LOVE A GOOD PUMPKIN SPICE ANYTHING!”
While the bundtinis are baking, use an electric mixer to make the frosting. Cream the cream cheese, butter, maple syrup, and vanilla on medium-low speed until smooth. With the mixer on low, slowly mix in the confectioners’ sugar until smooth. When the bundtinis are done, let them cool completely, spread them with the frosting, and sprinkle with the chopped Heath bars. ENJOY!

“This year we are trying to do things a little bit different,” Cristina Lawson, Healthy Behaviors Chair says. “We CRISTINA LAWSON continue to honor our goal to build quality relationships and inspire healthy lifestyles in young people. We seek to empower children in SETX to make healthy lifestyle choices by modeling and giving options on small choices and physical activity throughout our events.” The team of six women plans to attend thirty community events. “We want to support other committees in their events by bringing a table to set up and provide brochures with recipes for healthy and fun cooking ideas, along with coloring pages and examples of exercises and dance moves. We don’t plan to host many events, but we will be joining other committees in theirs,” Lawson says. The group plans to partner with local high schools and leadership clubs to carry its vision.

Donations were also accepted in September to support the Southeast Texas Food Bank in honor of Hunger Action Month. Lawson feels passionate about the group’s mission and is aiming to make an impact in the community. “It is important to learn and understand that a healthy lifestyle can help us live a longer and healthier life. Our youth needs to know this and see that it is something achievable, not just a slogan,” Lawson says.

Beaumont Children Museum’s personal connection to the Junior League
T
he Beaumont Children’s Museum has a jam-packed lineup for this year. From Touch-A-Truck to Toddler Takeover, the beloved museum continues its tradition of delighting families throughout the Golden Triangle. For the new League liaison to the museum, Kristen Ritter, her connection to the museum is a personal one. “I now have three children under the age of four. My family and I have spent a ton of time at the BCM, allowing the littles to get their energy out when it's too hot or too rainy to go to the park,” Ritter says.
Most moms can relate! The museum is the perfect place to get the energy out and to let imaginations run wild. “I think it's an awesome contribution to our community. I'm excited that JLB can support the BCM and the work they do,” Ritter says. A League initiative called “Storytime with BCM” will continue this year. But there is a need for volunteers. League members can volunteer to read a children’s book via Facebook Live; and to add to the excitement, the volunteer will provide a copy of the book and a toy to be given to a lucky listener.

Also mark your calendar for TouchA-Truck. Kids and adults can get up close with things that go “vroom” on October 16. ½ cup vegetable oil 1 lb. pork, cubed 1 lb. chicken, cubed 1.5 links Zummo’s andouille sausage, sliced 2 stalks celery, chopped 1 yellow onion, chopped 1 green bell pepper, chopped 1 bundle green onions, chopped 1 tbsp. fresh garlic, minced 3 beef bouillon cubes ½ tbsp. creole seasoning 3 ½ cups water 1 10oz. can cream of chicken soup 2 tbsp. kitchen bouquet 1 tbsp. hot pepper sauce 1 lb. bowtie pasta Salt + pepper to taste
Instructions :
In a large oven-safe pot, heat the vegetable oil on medium-high heat. Add the pork and chicken, season with salt and pepper, then sear until no longer pink. Once seared, reduce to low heat and simmer for 20-30 minutes. Remove all of the meat with a slotted spoon into a bowl, then sear the sausage separately. Once the sausage is cooked, remove to the meat bowl. In the pot, sauté the celery, bell pepper, yellow onion, and green onion for 10 minutes. After the first 10 minutes of sautéing the veggies, add the minced garlic, creole seasoning, and beef bouillon cubes, then continue to cook for another 20 minutes. Next, add the water, can of soup, hot pepper sauce, and kitchen bouquet. Turn up to high heat and allow the mixture to combine evenly. Add in the meats, then add in the bowtie pasta. Mix everything together and gently pat down the top so that all ingredients are covered by the liquid mixture. Cover the pot with a lid and cook in the oven at 300 degrees for 1 hour. Remove after 1 hour, keep it covered and let it rest for 5 minutes, then ENJOY! SOURCE: The Cajun Ninja’s YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/X5YR9pGxH0E 20

First General Meeting
J
LB held its first General Meeting on Tuesday, August 31, 2021, at the Beaumont Botanical Gardens (including a Zoom option). People turned up in their best gardening outfits, making for a fun and flowery crowd, and were greeted with their choice of libations—whether it was a Bloody Mary, White Claw, wine, or water. After choosing a place card embossed with a famous lady—fictional or real—members made their way to assigned tables decorated with stones and plants (the stones were for decorating, while the plants were for taking home). Dog and cat food donations were also collected for the Humane Society of Southeast Texas. After a year of Zoom meetings, it was fun for everyone to kick off JLB’s 75th year by mixing and mingling in person again. Here’s to a new year of growth!

e are so excited to announce Morgan Miles as our 2022 Neches River Festival Princess. Morgan is the daughter of Sustainer and JLB Past President, Diana Miles. Morgan attends West Brook High School, where she is the Varsity Cheer Captain, Baseball Manager, Student Council Member, NHS Member, and WB Sparkle Member. She is also a Symphony League Debutante and Symphony League Youth Guild Member. Morgan is a member of Praise Youth and was selected to cheer in the 2021 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in NYC. Morgan does all of this and more while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. Morgan is also a former Jr. Jr. League Member, and so many of us fondly remember her "growing up in the League" as she attended various events over the years with her mother. It is hard to believe Morgan is now a senior in high school! Morgan, we are so proud of you, and we hope you have a fantastic senior year!
Chair Training
Preserving the past, moving forward By: Kara Timberlake he Junior League of Beaumont is T celebrating its 75th anniversary, a celebratory feat that deserves taking a look
back at previous projects in the community. We’ve always been a network of women with the common desire to make our city a better place to live, providing volunteer and financial assistance to those in need, including to historical and cultural organizations. One of note is that of the John Jay French House.
1967
In 1966, women from the Junior League of Beaumont formed a committee to study the 1845 French home, built by John Jay French - a tanner and merchant - as a preservation project. By November 1967, the Beaumont Heritage Society (BHS) voted to undertake the French House as a restoration project. The Junior League supplied funds to purchase the French House and held it in trust until the BHS could raise matching funds. Membership drives and fundraisers were held and by October 1968, the matching grant requirement was met. In turn, JLB President, Mrs. James Dishman, presented the French Trading Post deed to BHS President Mildred Hall. With the help of the community, including the Junior League, the French House was taken back to its original condition, furnished with period objects, and extensively researched to tell the story of one of Beaumont’s early frontier families.
Present Day
First Provisional Meeting
Today, the John Jay French Museum operates as a unique museum, demonstrating the life of a prosperous Texas pioneer family from 1845-1865. The oldest home in Beaumont that has been restored to its original state, the historic pioneer settlement contains antique furnishings and outbuildings such as a blacksmith shop and smokehouse. In addition to offering tours, the museum provides Camp Lookinback Summer Camp, an Easter egg hunt, a Pumpkin Walk, a Christmas Candlelight tour, and other miscellaneous events and services. Over 50 years later, the John Jay French House relishes its partnership with the Junior League of Beaumont, welcoming continued volunteer efforts and financial support to improve and maintain the museum. 25

SPOTLIGHT PROVISIONAL
Kaylee (Dickens) Henry Hometown:
Longview, Texas. I moved to Groves when I was nine. I currently reside in Port Acres with my husband and son. Education:
I am a Port NechesGroves alum and graduated with my Bachelors in Corporate Communications from Lamar University. Family:
I have been married for going on two years now and have a seven-month-old son named Trey. Pets:
I have two dogs: a lab named Woodrow and a shih-tzu/ schnauzer mix named Olive. I have had Olive for nine years now and Woodrow for almost two.
of my son. It hasn’t been easy with a seven-month-old, but it has also been a lot of fun! I am also very proud of my accomplishments the last few years at Girls’ Haven. I left just a few months after my son was born, and it was one of the hardest decisions I have made, but taking this time to focus on my son was very important to me. What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
I can’t think of any advice specifically, but I will share a quote that has kept me strong and kept my chin up through several situations: “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” Eleanor Roosevelt What is the last show you binge watched?
All-American was the last show I binge-watched, but I swear I have seen almost everything. Who would you want to play you in a movie about your life?
I am not sure about someone my age, but if I could choose anyone of any age, it would be Kate Hudson. What inspired you to join the League?
The Junior League was heavily involved with Girls’ Haven while I was there, and I loved when they came up to volunteer and spend time with the girls. I wanted to be a part of a group of inspiring, caring women. If you had to pick a cocktail/coffee that best describes you, what would it be and why?
For a coffee, I would say a white chocolate mocha. It’s sweet but also very strong.
Anything you think others would be surprised to learn about you?
I was the singer in a band for several years touring locally in Houston and at the Golden Nugget.
Funny story about Woodrow...I was the PR Director for Girls’ Haven and was putting on the annual Gala. One of the auction items was Woodrow, and I had to keep him at my house as a puppy until the Gala. We ended up falling in love with him and my husband bid on him at the Gala. We couldn’t let anyone else take him home!
