There’s really no getting around it, our Design Village was a failure. At the start of DV, I would not have known the dreary mood of defeat and aggravation I would be cemented in upon finishing the project only to find that the same mood would wear on for months following the end of this project. The most significant and applicable characteristics I have learned from Design Village is to first, make sure all team members are reliable. Second, to not be mislead. Third and lastly, to recover quickly as to not allow other project advancements to be hindered.

Influence
Zeitgeist: • Japan’s post WWII national objective: establishment of peaceful, cultural nation • Government initiatives create lightweight constructions of habitable space + floor plans limited to absolute minimum • Employment of new materials (cement, steel + glass) • Allows Japan to reconnect to global architectural processes = modern Western design + Japanese architectural tradition

International Dwelling was, to me, a peek into our own future research obligations for the rest of our career. Understanding now that research is not simply when and how a structure was made, but also why it was made, why it was placed where it was placed, how it affected its environment, what impact it had on anything or anyone involved, as well as its history makes research not seem like research. It makes research seem like an accountability and commitment that we, as novice designers and future innovators, should consistently be thinking about.

As much as I knew International Dwelling was necessary, the prompt of Motion Studio was such a relief to execute. The freedom to make models was unavoidably satisfying. The predicament I would not assume I would ever get into, however, was creating this form into a real-life, functionable, with a program structure. Learning the difficulties and complexities that come with actual building has prepared my mindset for the start of the following quarter.
The capacity an individual can learn over a couple months time is absolutely insane. I admit I don’t see much of anything the same anymore whether it be a window, an art gallery, or an obnoxious skyscraper. Concrete, not cement. Function always over form. Intention, intention, intention. This program seems to indoctrinate tributes of our generation and raise them to set out and become environmental-friendly, conscious innovators and I crave to excel and succeed within this program with that in mind in an exploration of space, structure, forms, material, as well as an understanding of myself through all these means. Never have I been through such a toilsome, divine school year; stating this is a bit masochistic, but I look forward to more.
