BOB DEANS Master of Ceremonies Bob Deans started out in the news business delivering his hometown paper, The Richmond Times-Dispatch. Deans is an accomplished journalist who has traveled the world extensively during his 30 years as a newspaper reporter. That included a four-year stint as the chief Asia correspondent, based in Tokyo, for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and other Cox newspapers, and eight years covering the White House.

A past president of the White House Correspondent's Association, Deans currently serves as the Director of Federal Communications in the Washington office of the Natural Resources Defense Council, a national environmental advocacy group. The author of The River Where America Began: A Journey Along the James, he attended the 62nd Book & Author Dinner as a guest author. It is with delight that we welcome him back to his hometown tonight to serve as Master of Ceremonies!

Wiley Cash "A Land More Kind than Home" In the quiet, tight-knit community of Marshall in Madison County, only the most devout and 'God-fearing' congregants know for certain what goes on in Pastor Carson Chambliss' church from up the river. Rumors of the Pentecost and religious zealotry abound among the more common folk of this sleepy town. When 79-year-old Molly Jameson-an ardent follower of Chambliss' soul-saving methods-ends up face-down in her tomato garden with a blackened snakebite on her hand in 1975, only a very few of the less fearful residents begin to suspect something more than hymn-singing may be going on behind the papered-over windows of Pastor Chambliss' sanctuary.

More than 10 years later, Jess Hall, an adventurous, precocious boy is growing up in this town with his mother, a devout member of the same church, his father, a non-believer, and his mute older brother. One day the boys return early from catching salamanders by the creek and decide to climb up on the rickety rain barrel beside their house-a stunt their mother has told them time and time again not to do. Stump catches a glimpse of something in the window that he shouldn't see, and the boys are separated from each other. Soon catastrophe strikes, shattering the world as they know it. If Jess has suspected that there is much about the world of adults he doesn't understand, he now knows that that knowledge is also much more dangerous and close to him than ever before.

A North Carolina native, Wiley Cash currently lives with his wife in West Virginia and teaches English and creative writing at Bethany College. He holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where he studied fiction writing under Ernest J. Gaines and spent five long years sweating, celebrating Mardi Gras, and missing the mountains of North Carolina-a place Gaines encouraged him to write about. The title of "A Land More Kind than Home" is taken from the closing lines of Thomas Wolfe's final novel "You Can't Go Home Again".

Although Wiley loves the well-known author, he thinks Thomas Wolfe is completely wrong.

Our Community Impact Highlights include:

• More than 1,000 Junior League of Richmond members served the Richmond community, contributing over 30,000 hours of service annually.

• More than 1,200 students participated in free in-school presentations during author Graham Salisbury's visit as part of our 2012 Junior Book & Author initiative.

• Over 3,000 attendees enjoyed the 6th annual Touch a Truck event, a hands-on opportunity to explore construction trucks, buses and heavy machinery while meeting the people who build, protect, and serve the Richmond community.

• 600 children from four Richmond City schools and community centers enjoyed our Literacy Through Art Outreach program where art and books are brought together.

• More than 200 children have been participating in our ongoing Kids in the Kitchen initiative where they learn about nutrition, obesity, and healthy living.

• 111 children were served over 4 nights of back-to-school shopping through JLR's partnership with YMCA Bright Beginnings.

• 50 families are served monthly by our Good Sports program, which works with community partners such as the Richmond Kickers, University of Richmond Basketball, and the First Tee to promote character development through athletics for elementary school-aged youth.

• Our two Clothes Rack stores combined (Cary Street and Stratford Hills) provided quality,

affordable merchandise to over 38,000 customers, selling over 154,000 items. The Clothes Rack also partnered with Richmond Public Schools in the Work Experience Program, providing vocational education to students with intellectual disabilities, as well as re-donating thousands of unsold items to other organizations in need.

• JLR volunteers annually initiate at least 60 Done-in-a-Day community outreach projects with dozens of community partners through Richmond.

History of this Evening's Event Each spring, the Junior League of Richmond hosts one of its largest fundraising events, the Book & Author Dinner. The evening provides a wonderful opportunity for authors to travel to Richmond from all over to promote reading awareness and to be celebrated for their writing. This event also serves to spotlight the Junior League of Richmond's efforts in the community while providing muchneeded funds to support those activities. It is a wonderful tradition cherished by all Junior League members.

You may have attended the event in the past, but did you know that the actual dinner is the finale of many activities designed to celebrate and promote writing?

Local schools host visits with the authors who speak with students about books and share experiences that inspired them to write. In addition, authors speak with local media to promote their books and the event. The authors often graciously praise the Junior League throughout their visit for the southern hospitality shown to them, which is not surprising given the spirit of the Junior League of Richmond and its volunteers who work tirelessly in the Richmond community and on this wonderful event.

Many Richmonders have fond memories of the Miller & Rhoads department store, a Richmond institution for decades, and in 1943, Junior League member Em Bowles Locker Alsop introduced the idea of a "writers-with-your-meals" to store management. Intrigued because similar events had been quite successful in larger cities, they agreed to host "Book and Author" luncheons in 1943 and 1944. Following a hiatus due to the war, the Junior League of Richmond and the Miller & Rhoads department store held the first of many successful Book & Author Dinners in The Miller & Rhoads Tea Room in 1947.

Miller & Rhoads remained a loyal sponsor and location for 45 years, but with its closing in 1990, a new location and sponsor were needed. That year, the event moved to the Richmond Marriott with Retail Merchants Association of Greater Richmond as the new title sponsor. Again, the room was filled to capacity. In 2004, Verizon took on the role of title sponsor and, as with past sponsors, the relationships have been enjoyed by all. With a move to the Greater Richmond Convention Center in 2005, attendance at the Book & Author Dinner continues to grow and the event continues to thrive, now in its 67th year!
