Eben Alexander “Proof of Heaven” Thousands of people have had near-death experiences, but scientists have argued that they are impossible. Dr. Eben Alexander was one of those scientists. A highly trained neurosurgeon, Alexander knew that NDEs feel real, but are simply fantasies produced by brains under extreme stress.
Then, Dr. Alexander’s own brain was attacked by a rare illness. The part of the brain that controls thought and emotion—and in essence makes us human— shut down completely. For seven days he lay in a coma. Then, as his doctors considered stopping treatment, Alexander’s eyes popped open. He had come back. Alexander’s recovery is a medical miracle. But the real miracle of his story lies elsewhere. While his body lay in coma, Alexander journeyed beyond this world and encountered an angelic being who guided him into the deepest realms of super-physical existence. There he met, and spoke with, the Divine source of the universe itself. Alexander’s story is not a fantasy. Before he underwent his journey, he could not reconcile his knowledge of neuroscience with any belief in heaven, God, or the soul. Today Alexander is a doctor who believes that true health can be achieved only when we realize that God and the soul are real and that death is not the end of personal existence but only a transition. This story would be remarkable no matter who it happened to. That it happened to Dr. Alexander makes it revolutionary. No scientist or person of faith will be able to ignore it. Reading it will change your life. Dr. Eben Alexander III has been an academic neurosurgeon for the last 25 years, including 15 years at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital, the Children’s Hospital, and Harvard Medical School in Boston. When not speaking or conducting research, Dr. Alexander enjoys spending time with his two sons, Bond and Eben IV, his wife Holley, and friends. Release Date: October 23rd, 2012
Andrew Gross “No Way Back” No Way Back is a thrilling page-turner from Andrew Gross, the New York Times bestselling author of 15 Seconds and The Blue Zone. One woman is framed for a horrific crime, and desperate to prove her innocence.
A chance meeting with a stranger in a hotel ends in a shocking murder. Wendy Gould is an average mom—and the only witness. Nanny Lauritzia Velez knows a shocking secret that could prove to be deadly. Both of their lives in danger, this unlikely pair must work together against a network of dangerous men who want nothing more than to see them dead. A fast-paced, riveting tale with strong, compelling characters, No Way Back is an edge-of-your-seat read with nonstop action and a complex mystery. Gross is an American author of thriller novels including four New York Times bestsellers. He is known for his collaborations with suspense writer James Patterson. Gross’s books feature close family bonds, relationships characterized by loss or betrayal and large degree of emotional resonance which generally lead to wider crimes and cover ups. Andrew Gross grew up in Manhattan and attended the Barnard School for Boys. Gross received a degree in English from Middlebury College in 1974. In 1979, he met his wife Lynn on a blind date in New York City, NY and they were married three years later. In 1982, he received a Masters in Business Policy from Columbia University. Leigh Newman “Still Points North” Part adventure story, part love story, part homecoming, Still Points North is a pageturning memoir that explores the extremes of belonging and exile, and the difference between how to survive and knowing how to truly live.
Growing up in the wilds of Alaska, sevenyear-old Leigh Newman spent her time landing silver salmon, hiking glaciers, and flying in a single-prop plane. But her life split in two when her parents unexpectedly divorced, requiring her to spend summers on the tundra with her “Great Alaskan” father and the school year in Baltimore with her more urbane mother. Navigating the fraught terrain of her family’s unraveling, Newman did what any outdoorsman would do: She adapted. With her father she fished remote rivers, hunted caribou, and packed her own shotgun shells. With her mother she memorized the names of antique furniture, composed proper bread-andbutter notes, and studied Latin poetry at a private girl’s school. Charting her way through these two very different worlds, Newman learned to never get attached to people or places, and to leave others before they left her. As an adult, she explored the most distant reaches of the globe as a travel writer, yet had difficulty navigating the far more foreign landscape of love and marriage.
In vivid, astonishing prose, Newman reveals how a child torn between two homes becomes a woman who both fears and idealizes connection, how a need for independence can morph into isolation, and how even the most guarded heart can still long for understanding. Still Points North is a love letter to an unconventional Alaskan childhood of endurance and affection, one that teaches us that no matter where you go in life, the truest tests of courage are the chances you take, not with bears and blizzards, but with other people. Leigh Newman is the Deputy Editor of Oprah.com where she writes about books, life, happiness, survival, and – on rare, lucky days – food. Her fiction and non-fiction have appeared in One Story, Tin House, The New York Times Modern Love and City sections, Fiction, New York Tyrant, O The Oprah Magazine, Oprah. com, Condé Nast Brides, Condé Nast Concierge, Travel Holiday, Ski, Arthur Frommer’s Budget Travel, and Bookforum. Her work has been anthologized in Crown’s The Collected Traveler book series and My Parents Were Awesome (Villard, 2011). She was the co-editor for One Ring Zero’s The Recipe Project (Black Balloon, 2011) and currently serves as an editor-at-large for the indie press Black Balloon Publishing. Release Date: March 5th, 2013
Lucinda Scala Quinn “Mad Hungry Cravings” Your family has a hankering--a yen for chicken tikka masala or queso fundido, for shrimp pad thai or a Philly cheesesteak--and they want it bad. So you decide to eat out at a local ethnic or roadside restaurant, or do takeout. It’s expedient, but is the food really that good? Really really good? Because Lucinda Scala Quinn’s versions of all those dishes families crave will knock your socks off and prove beyond a doubt that the foods you love can be made better, faster, tastier, cheaper, and more healthfully at home. Lucinda Scala Quinn is all about smart strategies that simplify and make for great taste, so why outsource feeding our families when it takes less time, money, and effort to cook these favorite comfort foods ourselves? And why miss out on the untold gifts of sitting at home with your family around the dining room table? So next time there’s a request for pulled pork or deep-dish pizza or chicken fettuccine Alfredo, or cold soba noodles or fried rice, forget about soggy takeout and overpriced restaurants--just crack open this book and you’ll find simple recipes for all those dishes your family wants to eat, right now. Lucinda Scala Quinn is Executive Food Director, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, a co-host of “Everyday Food” on PBS and has her own show EatDrink on Martha Stewart Living Radio on SIRIUS channel 112 and XM Radio 157. She appears regularly on CBS’ “Early Show,” NBC’s “Today Show” and the Emmy-winning daily, nationally syndicated television series, “The Martha Stewart Show,” and is the author of two cookbooks — the third book forthcoming, Mad Hungry: Feeding Men and Boys, Artisan, October 2009.
Lucinda started cooking professionally as a teenager, and has worked as a chef, cooking teacher, caterer and food writer. She lives with her husband and three boys in New York City. Release Date: March 19th, 2013
Rhonda Riley “The Enchanted Life of Adam Hope” The Enchanted Life of Adam Hope is an unconventional and passionately romantic love story that is as breathtaking and wondrous as The Time Traveler’s Wife and The Story of Edgar Sawtelle.
During WWII, teenager Evelyn Roe is sent to manage the family farm in rural North Carolina, where she finds what she takes to be a badly burned soldier on their property. She rescues him, and it quickly becomes clear he is not a man…and not one of us. The rescued body recovers at an unnatural speed, and just as fast, Evelyn and Adam fall deeply in love. In The Enchanted Life of Adam Hope, Rhonda Riley reveals the exhilarating, terrifying mystery inherent in all relationships: No matter how deeply we love someone, and no matter how much we will sacrifice for them, we can only know them so well… Rhonda Riley is a graduate of the creative writing program at the University of Florida. This is her first novel. She lives in Gainesville, Florida. Release Date: April 23rd, 2013
Michael Shelden “Young Titan: The Making of Winston Churchill” In modern memory, Winston Churchill remains the man with the cigar and the equanimity among the ruins. Few can remember that at the age of 40, he was considered washed up, his best days behind him. In Young Titan, historian Michael Shelden has produced the first biography focused on Churchill’s early career, the years between 1901 and 1915 that both nearly undid him but also forged the character that would later triumph in the Second World War.
Between his rise and his fall, Churchill built a modern navy, experimented with radical social reforms, survived various threats on his life, made powerful enemies and a few good friends, annoyed and delighted two British monarchs, became a husband and father, took the measure of the German military machine, authorized executions of notorious murderers, and faced deadly artillery barrages on the Western front. Along the way, he learned how to outwit more experienced rivals, how to overcome bureaucratic obstacles, how to question the assumptions of his upbringing, how to be patient and avoid overconfidence, and how to value loyalty. He also learned how to fall in love. Shelden gives us a portrait of Churchill as the dashing young suitor who pursued three great beauties of British society with his witty repartee, political f lair, and poetic letters. In one of many neverbefore-told episodes, Churchill is seen racing to a Scottish castle to prepare the heartbroken daughter of the prime minister for his impending marriage. This was a time of high drama, intrigue, personal courage, and grave miscalculations. But as Shelden shows in this fresh and revealing biography, Churchill’s later success was predicated on his struggles to redeem the promise of his youth. Born in Oklahoma, Shelden earned his Ph.D. in English from Indiana University in 1979. He then began teaching at nearby Indiana State University, where he was promoted to Professor of English in 1989, and where he remains a full-time member of the faculty. For ten years he was a fiction critic for the Baltimore Sun, and from 1995 to 2007 he was a Features Writer for the Daily Telegraph of London, where he contributed dozens of articles on notable figures in film, literature, and public affairs, including interviews with Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi; American philosopher Richard Rorty; and feminist Betty Friedan. He also did one of the last interviews with actor Christopher Reeve. Shelden is married and the father of two daughters. Release Date: March 5th, 2013

INVITATIONS
History of this Evening's Event Each spring, the Junior League of Richmond hosts one of its largest fundraising events, the Book & Author Dinner. The evening provides a wonderful opportunity for authors to travel to Richmond from all over to promote reading awareness and to be celebrated for their writing. This event also serves to spotlight the Junior League of Richmond's efforts in the community while providing much-needed funds to support those activities. It is a wonderful tradition cherished by all Junior League members. You may have attended the event in the past, but did you know that the actual dinner is the finale of many activities designed to celebrate and promote writing? Local schools host visits with the authors who speak with students about books and share experiences that inspired them to write. In addition, authors speak with local media to promote their books and the event. The authors often graciously praise the Junior League throughout their visit for the southern hospitality shown to them, which is not surprising given the spirit of the Junior League of Richmond and its volunteers who work tirelessly in the Richmond community and on this wonderful event. Many Richmonders have fond memories of the Miller & Rhoads department store, a Richmond institution for decades, and in 1943, Junior League member Em Bowles Locker Alsop introduced the idea of a "writers-with-your-meals" to store management. Intrigued because similar events had been quite successful in larger cities, they agreed to host "Book and Author" luncheons in 1943 and 1944. Following a hiatus due to the war, the Junior League of Richmond and the Miller & Rhoads department store held the first of many successful Book & Author Dinners in The Miller & Rhoads Tea Room in 1947. Miller & Rhoads remained a loyal sponsor and location for 45 years, but with its closing in 1990, a new location and sponsor were needed. That year, the event moved to the Richmond Marriott with Retail Merchants Association of Greater Richmond as the new title sponsor. Again, the room was filled to capacity. In 2004, Verizon took on the role of title sponsor and support the event until 2010. Dominion Resources has generously served as the presenting sponsor from 2011 to the present. With a move to the Greater Richmond Convention Center in 2005, attendance at the Book & Author Dinner continues to grow and the event continues to thrive, now in its 68th year!
