Meet
Donna Jo Napoli Donna Jo Napoli teaches linguistics at Swarthmore College and is the author of 68 books for young readers, from historical to fantasy to gothic horror to contemporary humor. She lives outside of Philadelphia with her husband. She has five children and two grandchildren. She dreams of moving to the woods to become a naturalist, and loves to garden and bake bread. Her books have won national awards, including the Sydney Taylor Award, the Parents' Choice Gold Award (and two Silver awards), the Golden Kite Award (and an honor book), the Anne Izard's Storytellers' Choice Award, the Frances and Wesley Bock Book Award, the Sons of Italy National Book Club selection, as well as numerous American Library Association best book awards. Her books have won state awards, including New Jersey’s M. Jerry Weiss Book Award, the Kentucky Bluegrass Award, the Nevada Young Readers' Award, California’s Eureka! Silver honor, and Pennsylvania’s Carolyn W. Field honor award many times. Her books have been translated into over a dozen languages. Her novel Beast was translated into Persian and she was a guest of the Iranian government for a 10-day trip to several cities in Iran in 2005. At that time, she visited Bam, where an earthquake had struck, and then wrote the picture book The Earth Shook (the proceeds of which go to a day care center in Bam). The research for both books involved reading Persian literature, which led to her finding the classical poem that spawned A Single Pearl, a picture book coming out in 2013. She is working on A Treasury of Egyptian Mythology, to appear in 2013, and a contemporary young adult novel with the working title Skin. And she has begun research on a sequel to her novel Hush: An Irish Princess Tale.

Join the League in Sharing Stories Eight years ago, the Junior League of Richmond established the Junior Book & Author program to provide middle school students with the opportunity to share in that experience. During the 2012–2013 school year, the 9th Junior Book & Author event will touch the lives of thousands of middle school students, opening their eyes to the magical stories of acclaimed authors and fostering excitement about books and writing. Through Junior Book & Author, copies of Donna Jo Napoli’s books are provided to our partnering middle schools to maintain as classroom reading sets or to offer in their libraries. Teachers have incorporated these books into their curriculum before and after the author’s visits. Join the Junior League of Richmond as we foster a love of reading by sharing Napoli’s works with middle school students in the Richmond area. Your gift to the 2012 Book Drive will help the League to provide books to thirteen local middle schools. Book Drive gifts can be made in $10 increments by visiting www.RVAjuniorauthor.com. Following Donna Jo Napoli’s visit to Richmond November 1 – 2, 2012, the Junior League of Richmond will continue the momentum of her visit by holding Book Clubs at area schools during November and December. Book Clubs, facilitated by our membership, are designed to give students a greater appreciation and deeper understanding of all that reading has to offer. Each book club is comprised of approximately thirty 6th, 7th or 8th grade students. The League will provide volunteers for teacher-created programs or will provide its own professionally designed and executed lesson plans. League volunteers work closely with teachers to ensure that the activities are personally tailored to each classroom.

Be a Junior Author Writing Competition Many of Donna Jo Napoli's books tell stories that relay feelings of pain and hurt. Competition participants were asked to share similar stories about a time when they or a character witnessed or experienced an injustice that “hurt the soul” and how the character survived the experience. The Junior League of Richmond would like to thank this year’s young authors. We applaud all entrants for their hard work and creativity!
