(gypsy jazz and more)

Sunday, August 5

4:30pm

Touché is the new creation of Christophe Chagnard, music director of the Northwest Sinfonietta, Lake Union Civic Orchestra, and University of Puget Sound Orchestra. Featuring gypsy jazz made famous by Django Reinhardt, Touché plays music from all corners of the world. All six musicians bring unique and versatile perspectives, from classical music to traditional Indian ragas, creating highly distinctive, sophisticated arrangements of jazz standards, folk tunes, and pop icons. Famed as a dynamic and sensitive conductor, Christophe plays guitar in this sextet, along with guitarists Neil Andersson (founding member of Pearl Django) and Ron Peters, and Jo Nardolillo, violin, Ethan Sobotta, bass, and Chaz Hastings, tabla and percussion.

Noon-6:00pm

Local favorite Julie Duke and her band of seasoned bluesmen open the festival with a set of classic tunes near and dear to blues fans’ hearts. Julie counts Etta James, Koko Taylor, and Billie Holiday among her favorite influences, and it shows. Next up, the West Coast Women’s Blues Revue, featuring Alice Stuart and Teri Anne Wilson, will rock the meadow with folk and rock-influenced blues. Legendary singer-song writer-guitarist Alice Stuart has been a trail-blazer for women in music since 1964, touring and recording with Mississippi John Hurt, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Joan Baez, Doc Watson, Jerry Garcia, Sonny Terry, Elvin Bishop, and Frank Zappa, to name just a few. Then it’s diva-time, as Lady A and the Baby Blues Funk Band take the stage. A perfect gumbo of gospel, blues and funk, Lady A’s show is an action-packed, audience-participation party. Comparisons to Tina Turner are right on the money.
