SPECTRUM gothic configuration

This semester long project analyzed and researched various architectural styles. We were partnered in a duo throughout the development of this project. My section focused on gothic window tracery and the curves which were extracted from those window designs. We then carried out multiple phases with these various curves in order to create sheets or fields of configurations which would eventually lead to the basic structural and physical walls of our building. This 8 - story building was programmed to be an LGBTQ+ center based in the inner heart of Chicago.

We then used unique techniques to form gaps and rooms which followed the processes seen in the initial composition of the curves. The addition of stained colored glass was intentionally placed as a reflective effect on the white surface which we represented as a blank canvas. The renderings are the most effective way to express the conceptual decisions made in the development of this building.

LGBT Population in Chicago, Illinois: Chicago is home to 146,000 adults who identify as LGBT, according to a new report from the city’s health department. In what it describes as “the first-ever population estimate and demographic profile for all LGBT adults,” the Chicago Department of Public Health estimates 7.5 percent of Chicago’s adult population identifies as such.“We know that the only way to ensure a greater quality of life and access to services for LGBT individuals is to better understand the size of, and opportunities and challenges specific to, Chicago’s LGBT community,” CDPH Commissioner Julie Morita said in a statement. “This report is a first step, giving providers, elected officials and community leaders a deeper understanding of Chicago’s LGBT population so we can in turn help better strengthen the community.” The study combined analysis from two sources: a Youth Risk Behavior Survey randomly given to CPS high schoolers and the random telephone Healthy Chicago Survey aimed at Chicago adults. The estimates found that 138,000 adults identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual while 10,500 identify as transgender. The numbers only include “self-identified” LGBTQ Chicagoans.“We expect the actual number to be even higher,” said Brian Richardson, first deputy commissioner of the public health department. “We are in the age of data. Nearly everything Center on Halsted does must be supported through data, both in terms of justifying our programs and in providing that the program met its goal,” Torres said. “This report will be a vital instrument in explaining the need for the services offered by Center on Halsted.” The research done by Chicago Department of Public Health has found that sexual and gender minorities are more likely to engage in risky behaviors than their heterosexual and/or cisgender peers. Policies and cultural norms that stigmatize and exclude sexual and gender minorities can foster these behaviors and ultimately lead to negative health effects for individuals and population health disparities specific to these communities. It is of the utmost importance to understand and address the unique health needs of sexual and gender minorities.

ern United States. The LGBT community in Chicago held its first annual Gay Liberation March in June of 1970. This march encouraged people to fight homophobia, to come out and raise awareness of the issues and injustices facing the community. PRIDE continued to grow in the ’70s and ’80s, promoting visibility for the community and eventually gaining the support of many local politicians and businesses. The Chicago Gay Pride Parade is held annually on the last Sunday of June in Chicago. The Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame was created in June 1991. The hall of fame is the first “municipal institution of its kind in the United States, and possibly in the world.” The first ceremony took place during Pride Week and was held at Chicago City Hall.

23
We, as individuals, form experiences and memories through objects around us. As curious as we are, the only real way we can identify happenings from the rest is using our senses. Everything carries its characteristics that offer its unique identification, whether that be the thrashing of water upon rocks or the tree trunk’s rugged texture. For this project, I wished to morph these experiences into a sensory hierarchy based solely on their strength in our bodies. You will experience differing amplitudes of sensory connection to the space you are traveling in. I beleived following a rock slab placement concept as seen on the bare foundation of the manchester mills and the sides which coat the artifical sepeartion in the creek would guide me in shifting and stacking program elements.

Artisan Yards, an area near the southern part of Atlanta, is centered among three prominent neighborhoods: Castleberry Hill, Mechanicsville, and Downtown Atlanta. These areas have dealt with continuous battles of economic suppression, social and cultural separation, and many of the current residents still undergo the repercussions from the early 1900s during racial segregation. This proposition will provide resources to heal the broken pieces of these neighborhoods and expand beyond reintroducing social connection and cultural union among the local residents. Finally, this area will soon be on its way towards being the progressive place it once was before and possibly better.
36 Project Label | Year of Project | Section Critic
In turning these motives into reality, the program intends to resolve and address the issues among the neighborhoods. The proposed program consists of residential and non-residential programs. Secondly, there is a non-residential program aimed towards the further development of career and job demographics. the residential housing units will be designed purposefully to promote new friendships, relationships, and more (reconnection). This will tackle housing insecurity and eviction present in the area.

This project was a two-phase project which involved the creation of a machine which would transition towards the development of an activist-run center. My concept focuses on the relationship of the native american diaspora and the storytelling of their experiences which helps to bring awareness to this commonly shadowed culture. Through the implementation of program and space, this is a center made for native americans to spread their culture while also teaching the local public about their past. With communication as a driver in this project, they are able to access radios, performance spaces, broadcasting hubs, and more.

The section-perspective view offers a unique view of the spatial structure of the interior, as well as circulation added by furniture. This North-South section, facing west, cuts through beams, the aluminum massing, glass, as well as open space on the facades to reveal how thee materials are used in relation to one another in order to create intersecting shapes of different transparencies. This view offers a look at the depth of the structure, as this section is taken approximately at the midpoint of the North and South facades. The exploded axonometric view allows us to deconstruct the structure horizontally and vertically to understand all the structural components and elements of a structure, as well as how they come together to complete the structure. For this specific view, the glass, aluminum massing, and steel beams are all separated into separate layers based on their placement on the actual structure. This view allows for greater context as to how the beam structure influences the placement of the aluminum massing, and subsequently the glass panels. The complex algorithm designed by the architect, Toyo Ito, was the main focal point of this entire pavilion and this axonometric view captures the exact interpretation of those angles and intersections.

REPRESENTING RENOVATION Floral Court + Carraige Hall, London, UK Introduction to Floral Courtyard & Carriage Hall The Floral Courts, also known as the Covent Garden, is a mixed-use oriented project which attempts to heal an urban fabric which ties back to the past historical war conflicts which occurred during WW2. This space is a six-story stack of forty five apartments with a commercial courtyard and frontage. The frontage contains various forms of commerce such as high-end restaurants, boutiques, and other related retail fronts. This being a structure / place which replaced a bulky 3 decade old office building, this is certainly not your typical regular marketplace. Inspiration for the unique massing of this courtyard and the surroundings refers back to the historical commercial fruit and vegetable crates. This architecture is the epicenter of London’s luxury residences and it it was designed to improve the urban environment. The architects, KPF, even stated “The key to the project has been finding the balance between old and new”. This space is marrying modern architecture with the conservation and sympathetic restoration of a heritage building.

Map Development Through Time
This represents a timeline which depicts multiple maps that indicate some of the program and space that was used during those times. As time passed, this space grew to be a central commerce hub which ulltimately effected the use and prupose of the area to compliment that specific neccesity. The denseness of the program is exponentiallly increasing as you progress through time. Displaying this immediate shift towards urbanization would be an interesting concept to uncover.
