IN BEAUTY IS STRENGTH
Holsinger’s Portraits of African Americans in Charlottesville & Albemarle from a Century Ago April 1-30 Rufus Holsinger’s portraits of African Americans show us a community that refused to be defined by its oppression. At the height of the Jim Crow era, hundreds of black women and men from Charlottesville and the surrounding counties commissioned Holsinger, the city’s leading studio photographer, to make portraits that depicted them as they wished to be seen - a people of beauty, grace, strength, and dignity. Every image was an act of resistance to a culture of white supremacy, a small but significant act of self-determination.
