This month we take you on a journey around the beautiful state of Arizona with some of our fabulous readers. Thank you to everyone who sent us the great photos. As the weather heats up in parts of the state, many of these locales boast cooler and more comfortable temperatures. We encourage everyone to head out and “Explore Arizona!”

The glamorous story about a kid from Scottsdale who made it big in Hollywood.

Daniel DiCriscio “Messiah of Makeover”

by Deon Brown Photo Rob Lebow for the book 34 by WWW.IONAZ.COM JuneGorgeous 2016

Y

ou can’t go to a red carpet event in Hollywood without seeing Daniel DiCriscio. He’s a renowned celebrity image consultant, hairstylist, model & musician, personality and familiarly known in the biz as the “Messiah of Makeover.” Everyone in Tinseltown knows the handsome, social butterfly with the trademark platinum blonde mane of hair. And most of of those celebrities have tapped him for his skills to create a unique style and image. Jeffrey Sanker and Lisa Vanderpump throw birthday parties for him.

Daniel DiCriscio is part of the Hollywood glitterati now, but before the bright lights he spent several years living in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Who? The Barbi Twins, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum Faye Resnick, Kyle Richards and Lisa Vanderpump, singer Stevie Nicks, Pamela Anderson, Anna Nicole Smith, Playboy playmates galore, plus Hugh Hefner himself (He was the highest paid stylist in the history of Playboy) President Richard Nixon’s daughter, Julie Nixon Eisenhower, keeps Daniel on speed dial. He even gave Marilyn Manson a makeover.

ION: How did you become a stylist savior to the stars?

Daniel appeared with Sasha Baron Cohen’s self-obsessed alter-ego, the German fashionista Brüno in an zany, exclusive “interview.” He released a fulllength album of dance music called Sin in the 1990s and in 2000 he was asked to perform at a birthday party for the legendary Grace Jones.

“I moved to Scottsdale after college. After working on the soap opera All My Children in New York and getting rained on, I decided, ‘I’m out’ and moved. Scottsdale is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been.” He still maintains a residence in the West’s Most Western Town. ION Arizona talked to Daniel about his life since Scottsdale. A life, he says, that “happens a lot by accident.”

Daniel DiCriscio: There’s really nobody who’s ugly. It’s just how people put themselves together to project themselves. “Messiah of Makeover” was a story that was done during the Clinton sex scandal about my work on Paula Jones. [Jones sued Pres. Clinton for sexual harrasment in 1999 - ed.] She had her agent call me to do a perm. I saw something different; we redid the whole thing. The Washington Post called it the most jaw-dropping public makeover ever. When she walked into the press conference my phone started ringing. Then came the deposition in DC. I got mobbed by the media. I didn’t understand the point why a hairdresser would be at the deposition. The New York Post put me on the “Winners” list, and June 2016 WWW.IONAZ.COM 35

Paula and her team on the “Losers” list. That gave me celebrity status. ION: Think you’ll be welcomed to the White House if Hillary Clinton wins? DDiC: I’ve met Hillary Clinton. I’m impartial but it’d be a little controversial having me in the White House considering I did makeover Paula Jones. [Last January, Jones demanded that Hillary apologize to women for “allowing” her husband to “abuse” women. Good luck with that, Paula. - ed.] I’d love to do Hillary. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong, but believe me, anyone can look better. It’s not about hair, makeup and clothes, it’s more about energy and persona. Donald Trump needs a makeover. He’s got the whole thing going with the spray tan and red tie. I could make him look so hot. ION: Exactly how does one give Marilyn Manson a makeover? DDiC:: That’s why I do what I do, and you do what you do. I could make you look like Marilyn Manson! Marilyn came in with long black hair. He said he wanted something new and showed me pictures of high fashion runway shows. I said, “Put those away.” Always turn people away from the mirror. I cut off his hair into the basic look on his Mechanical Animals album. He said, “Dude, you’re a fucking genius!”

36

WWW.IONAZ.COM June 2016

ION: In 2007 you were a defendant on Christina’s Court in a wild episode of “Celebrity Justice,” battling it out with the wacky designer, Bobby Trendy. DDiC: He’s been around forever. People think we were friends and concocted this whole thing. No way. I was at an event and TMZ asked me about Bobby; all of a sudden we had this TMZ war going. I don’t know him at all, and I don’t want to know him. The press puts us together for pictures, but personally, I’m not interested. I’ve got to be the bigger person. When we filmed the show I said, “Do not put us in the same hotel or on the same plane.” We both made history in a weird way. ION: TMZ named you and Bobby Trendy among the “Top Train Wrecks of 2007.” DDiC: I know! I went from being this really nice boy to a train wreck! (Laughs) ION: What are your future plans? DDiC: I’m also revamping my music, working on haircare product lines, a book and a reality TV show is in the works. I’m in a movie called Hair. It won the Independent Filmmakers Showcase for “Best Documentary.” It will make a difference for people that are suffering from hair loss, and it will make you aware of how strongly we identify with our hair. I’m honored that they contacted me—it was because of my hair. Daniel DiCriscio’s music is available on iTunes. An animal rights activist, Daniel writes for LICK magazine. He also appears in the forthcoming indie schlock horror movie, VampBikers Tres: ZomBikers with Michael Alig and Michael Musto

Ariana Grande

Dangerous Woman “Ain’t you ever seen a princess be a bad b*tch?” asks Ariana Grande on her third LP, Dangerous Woman. She poses that question on the bubbly, “Bad Decisions” where she blames a boy for all the “stupid things” she’s done lately. To answer her question: yes, we have. In fact, Grande’s “bad b*tch” incarnation is a career move we’ve seen many times before. Usually it entails underwear as outerwear, tattoos and leather chaps. Where other pop divas seem to have actually done the dirty, our naughty little Grande seems only to suggest. Lead single and title track, “Dangerous Woman” is a watered down “Earned It,” but only made interesting at its end with Imogene Heap-style effects. Dancefloor tracks “Be Alright,” “Into You” and “Greedy” fight against her own grown woman proclamations made throughout the rest of the album’s genres and content. She takes a stab at rap, “Everyday” feat. Future, which along with “Bad Decisions” sounds like Beyoncé impersonations, something we know is one of her fortes. “Side to Side” with Nicki Minaj stands out; it’s the only song Grande sounds like she enjoyed recording but even there Minaj outshines her in only 16 bars. The same commitment Grande makes to that ponytail should be applied to the distinct vocal delivery and style that defines her as the Diva o’ the Day. Available Now

ANOHNI

HOPELESSNESS ANOHNI has transitioned—both literally and figuratively. From the Downtown New York ingénue to internationally beloved outsider artist, from frontman Antony Hegarty of his chamber pop ensemble Antony and the Johnsons to female solo artist ANOHNI. Since 2005 her distinct voice and approach to the staleness of popular music has put ANOHNI on a global pedestal that only a few artists like Björk or Radiohead get to stand on. It only takes one listen of her cover of Beyonce’s “Crazy in Love” and you hear nuances only a propensity toward deep love and despair can provide. With HOPELESSNESS, ANOHNI takes her unapproachable sound and socially conscious perspective and puts it in a musical context meant to reach the masses. “4 Degrees,” a song about climate change, is SIA like in its grandeur and her Nina Simoneesque vocals soar. She sings an antagonistic lullaby to the drone bomb, on “Drone Bomb Me.” Surveillance is addressed in “Watch Me” and she sings to the ever-present “Daddy.” HOPELESSNESS is as beautiful as it is enlightening, an epic by the who might be our world’s most influential trans artist. Mystery & Music Backtrack

Vinyl

(2016)

Starring: Bobby Canavale, Olivia Wilde, Ray Romano

Starring: Adrien Brody, Sam Neill Apparently if you practice psychiatry you see dead people. In the grand tradition of M. Night Shyamalan’s eerie The Sixth Sense, we find the world peppered with spooks from another dimension. Of course, they’re usually completely unaware that they’re long gone. Australian shrink Peter Bowers (Brody, The Pianist) is grief stricken after the death of his daughter, triggering recollections of a train derailment killing 47 people that he unwittingly helped cause nearly 30 years earlier. And that, kids, is why you never leave your bicycle on the train tracks in the middle of the night. But is that exactly how it happened? Hitchcock-like complications add more revelations (or are they diversions?) in the supernatural denouement of this ghost story. Brody is impeccable (as always.) Critics lambasted the picture upon release because of The Sixth Sense similarities, nearly dooming it to VOD. Not without flaws, there are a few “things that go bump in the night” that’ll give you the heebie-jeebies in this suspenseful tale. Available now, Blu-ray, DVD, SRP $19.99

season one (2016)

Sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll. Experience the seamy, sleazy underbelly of the music industry back in the 1970s. Hollywood directing genius Martin Scorcese and Rolling Stone front man Mick Jagger (who, no doubt, lived through most of this stuff in real life) created the series and gritty storyline for HBO. Record executive Richie Finestra (Canavale, Boardwalk Empire) starts his record company American Century. He lands on hard times and copes with challenges and obstacles while he’s forced to negotiate the sale of the company to Polygram Records. Richie just happens to be a drug addict an accessory to a murder. The 10 episode series has all the grime and crime that you’d expect from a Scorcese opus, shot in a brittle, yellowish tint. And don’t forget the violence. It is Scorcese, after all. At times plodding and overwrought, still, this imaginary window to the epic age of rock music and the people that gave it a place on the stage and turntables is likely to interest music historians. Besides, the impeccable Bobby Canavale is in it. Available June 7, Blu-ray $45.95 SRP ★★★☆☆

Something’s Fishy Swiss Army Man

Finding Dory

Voiced by: Ellen DeGeneres, Albert Brooks and others When Disney’s 101 Dalmatians was released, everybody wanted a Dalmatian. Taco Bell’s spokes-Chihuahua boosted the yappy pooch’s sales. Pixar’s Finding Nemo earned $936 million and flooded the market (so to speak) with clownfish. Expect the returning, daffy, mentally deficient blue tang (Degeneres, Ellen) Dory to do the same in Finding Dory. The story: six months after the little lost Nemo incident, Dory sets sail to find her own family off the coast of California. A white beluga whale, a whale shark and an octopus help her navigate the waters–so to speak. Please note that unlike clown fish, blue tangs do not thrive in aquariums. Of course, neither do Dalmatians or Chihuahuas. Opens June 17

Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Paul Dano Imagine Robinson Crusoe, Castaway Tom Hanks (and Wilson the volleyball) with the macabre stiff from Weekend at Bernie’s plus a dash of surreal comedy from Gilligan’s Island. Hank (Dano, Little Miss Sunshine) is alone, marooned on an island, on the verge of suicide. Manny, a magically talking corpse (Radcliffe, Harry Potter franchise), washes ashore. Voilà! Instant friend who farts and gets spontaneous erections. A lot. Sundance festival audiences bolted for the theater doors, but the dramedy’s heart lends tragic fragility to the tale of human foibles and frailties. Opens June 24

The Shallows

Starring: Blake Lively, Shark

Nancy (Lively, Gossip Girl and celebrity homemaker) is surfing when she’s stranded on a rock 200 yards from the shore. The rub: a very hungry Great White Shark has his eye (and his sharp pearly whites) on her juicy “Oakland booty.” Jaws for the new generation, except this shark looks real. Opens June 29

True Brew, Baby I Love You Fact: Arizona’s restaurant industry posts the largest in growth, sales and jobs in the nation. It’s probably all due to the wild storm of building activity on Seventh Street in Phoenix. No wonder they’re calling it “Restaurant Row.” New eateries are spreading faster than a grease fire on a kitchen stove. The latest spark is Central Kitchen, located at the Crown on 7th, the hub for Chef Cullen Campbell’s restaurant Okra, and other choice retail and service shops. This neighborhood-y, casual, wood-heavy sports video bar-slashrestaurant with a definite “straight” vibe is friendly and emphasizes a great choice of over a dozen sudsy craft beers and foam capped ales. Got the hungries? Their pantry is packed with pots and pans, plates and platters ready to be filled a variety of vittles to please your palate along with a hint of which beer will enhance the taste and culinary experience. We started off with Pretzel Bites for $8. These dense, mini-rolls of traditional Bavarian bread

are fresh from the oven, sprinkled with salt. The warm Bird City Pale Ale cheese fondue is blended with caraway, giving the flavor a twist. Try the to-die-for house-made Ironwood Porter mustard with whole mustard seeds. The $4 ramekin of Orange Peel IPA Marinated Olives are deliciously oily, although we couldn’t detect much in the way of the beer marinade that we noticed. Two kinds of Chicken Wings, a Charcuterie Sampler, Chicken Tenders, Black Bean Hummus and peanuts help start the meal and are great for sharing. The Roasted and Pickled Beets are a vitamin and mineral powerhouse. Here they’re served with an all too small dab of whipped goat cheese, crushed almonds and grilled focaccia. Not bad (if you like beets—we do) but expected so much more to warrant the whopping $11 price tag.

house sauce, smoked mozzarella, pepperoni, sausage and bacon. The perfect crust wasn’t too thin, the toppings were plentiful and the flavor couldn’t be beat.

If you’ve got an appetite, Central Kitchen has six main courses specializing in “comfort food” from this side of the border as well as the other. The Ale House Chicken Fried Chicken was so good it had our tongues knockin’ out the back of our front teeth just to get at it. The Orange Peel IPA-brined boneless chicken breast, mashed Red Bliss potatoes with chicken gravy reminds you of what made America great. For $13 it was a winner, winner, chicken dinner. Fish and chips, Macaroni & Cheese, Root Beer-brined Pork Shoulder Tacos, Steak ‘n’ Taters and and a Grilled Gulf Prawn Tostada round out the Main Menu. Love pizza? Central Kitchen founder Rich Stark, the former CEO of NYPD Pizza, brings his know-how with the Black Iron Pizza, a baked thin-crust pie, hand-formed available in 10” and 14” sizes. Six different styles, plus a “Do It Yourself” option are available. The Brewmaster ($12.50 & $16.50) includes 52

Central Kitchen has a selection of burgers and sandwiches, plus plenty of soups, salads and chili. Finish your meal off with one of Mamma Toledo’s mouthwatering pies, baked locally. Your meal can be complemented by the craft beer on tap, which ranges from 4.8 to 10.1 per cent alcohol content (quaff carefully!) Not only that, Central Kitchen participates in the Cicerone Beer Certification program, making them experts. Can’t decide? They’ll help! Try a flight with four sample beers. (You’ll go nuts for the White Chocolate Ale.) Pay it forward. “Buy a Buddy a Brew!” Pick out a pint for your bestie, give Central Kitchen your pal’s name and email, and they’ll have 30 days to belly up to the bar and bend their elbow, thanks to you. Plus, you’ll see your names scroll by on the screen, so you’ll feel like big shots. Or pints, in this case.

They’re still very proud of that fact.” Bisbee is a special place in Arizona where tolerance and acceptance has always been the name of the game. In Vino Veritas. “I’m excited to share the history of wine production here in Arizona. Currently, it’s our state’s fastest growing industry and we have so many wineries to take advantage of visiting,” said Marshall. “Did you know that we have vineyards in northern Arizona dating back to the time of the Spanish

Michael Soucier 1960-2016

There was always room for you at a table in the Acacia Café. Owner Mike Soucier made sure that each guest was welcome. Everybody always had a full plate, but more than that, they often left with a full heart. His customers became “family.” Mike’s practical, no-nonsense approach to just about everything was marked by his subtle, dry, and the wicked sense of humor characteristic to his native Maine. Never one to brag, his quiet

Mike’s all too short life is celebrated by his beloved husband, Jeff Piñales, his adoring nephew, Alex Poland and family, his devoted employees at Acacia Café and more friends than you could ever imagine. Although he may be gone for now, it’s nice to know that Mike will always save everyone a place at his table. We’ll miss him and his cooking very much.

HAVASU FALLS ► Hector Leon Araiza and Cesar Sedano Villa, “10 miles and five hours hiking with heavy gear and arriving with busted feet, yet so worth it!” Havasu Falls are part of Havasupai Canyon, part of the Grand Canyon and among the most dramatic in the entire southwestern United States. This unique part of the canyon is home to the Havasupai American Indian tribe. Havasupai is roughly translated as “The people of the blue-green waters,” and refers to the beautiful turquoise color of Havasu Creek. The color of the water is the result of having been stored underground – in limestone caverns or aquifers – for as much as 30,000 years. A permit is required to hike and camp in the canyon, but you should put this on your bucket list of “Arizona Experiences”
