Love is in the Air I
love February in Arizona. Can you believe it’s winter here? Valentine’s Day is coming! Grab a loved one (or someone you just met) and get ready for a fun-filled love fest!
Love Cowboys
Who doesn’t love a sexy cowboy or cowgirl? While this state is far removed from its Wild West days, once a year we’re all wild cowboys. For 32 years, Arizona Gay Rodeo Association (AGRA) has brought us the biggest and best gay rodeo in the country. It’s a fun weekend of shows, vendors and contests. Be safe, have fun and hop on the rodeo shuttle at Charlie’s. Find out more on page 69.
Love Jonny Stanciu
In every issue of ION we bring you all the great events happening around the state in and out of the bars. There’s one person who I love and he takes it to another level. Jonny Stanciu created a group of friends dedicated to socializing beyond the environment of a bar or nightclub. We met up with Jonny and learned more about this fun-loving group called “Gays Do More Than Bars.” Check out the story on page 34.
Love Cooper and Cohen Two of my favorite stars are coming to Phoenix. Sexy CNN anchor Anderson Cooper and host of Watch What Happens: Live on Bravo, Andy Cohen, are coming to the Comerica Theater 28

June 9. Join ION Arizona in the VIP suites to enjoy the sexy celebrities for AC2. To reserve your own suite call Courtney at 602514-2919. Check out the ad on page 16.
Love Winter
Put down that remote, stop binge watching past seasons of RuPaul’s Drag Race, get out and have some fun! We have two great LGBTQ friendly sporting events happening this month: one with the ASU Sun Devil Women’s Basketball team, plus a hockey game with the Arizona Coyotes where everyone receives a rainbow Arizona Coyotes t-shirt for free (see page 42). There will be Super Bowl parties everywhere on February 5, the Renaissance Festival is back again (see page 88), and the HRC Gala (page 86) is this month, too. The love continues next month including Celtic Music and Microbrew Festival (page 65), Ignition Circuit Party at Charlie’s (page 64) and an awesome musical tribute to The Beatles called “In My Life” (page 64) at the Herberger Theatre. So love yourself. Love your friends and family. Love your community. Most importantly, I want you to love this issue of ION Arizona.

Social Butterfly Jonny Stanciu
aims to broaden gay social environments.
by Deon Brown by Deon Brown photos by Dean Cassidy 34 WWW.IONAZ.COM August February 2017 2017
IDecember, t all started with a hashtag. This past Jonny Stanciu remembers,
“I reflected what I wanted out of life and my goals; I discovered that bars weren’t conducive to what I get excited about and gives me joy.” Happy Hour wasn’t cutting it anymore. “I could go to a coffee shop, but there’s got to be other people who think this way,” Jonny thought. He was at a dog park with his dog, Oreo, and Ken Perez when he posted #GaysDoMoreThanBars with a photo on Facebook. He got 118 likes. Jonny submitted an entry for the new idea for his social group on the LGBTQ page with MeetUp.com and in just one day had fifteen people respond. Gays Do More Than Bars is committed to creating an open, safe space where members can be themselves and simply relax and have fun, making new friends. The group is open to everyone: gay, lesbians, trans. “We’re family friendly, too,” Jonny added. “We don’t always have to be 18-plus all the time. For those with kids, that really opens it up.” Gays Do More Than Bars
isn’t “anti-bar.” It’s a supplemental avenue to make new friends or just keep busy with other people like you. “I’m not dismissing bars. When people think about where to meet in the LGBT community, most will refer to a bar. But other than bars, some don’t know where to engage with others.
There’s a whole community of people who do things beyond a bar,” Jonny said. Individual, personal challenges spurred Jonny’s creation of the group, too. “I used to be the person who stayed at home with my dog, Oreo. This year I’ve experienced a lot of growth and opened up,” he said. “I went through some depression issues—I know what that’s like. So if you need someone who understands, I’m here,” he volunteered. This isn’t a group for lonelyhearts or spouse hunting, either. “If you think you’re gonna find the love of your life, it’s not gonna happen here. It’s not that kind of a thing. The point is to be yourself and to have fun. Where are your interests? What are your passions? If you like origami, if you like quilting, you can do it here! You February 2017 WWW.IONAZ.COM 35
“My favorite part is the impact it has on people,” Ken said. “Some people are just coming out and having a hard time connecting and meeting new people,” Ken explains. “It’s not work, it’s fun! We meet several times a week. It’s good oldfashioned interaction, face-to-face, with people Jonny, his dog asking, ‘How are you Oreo, & Ken Perez. doing?’ It’s a safe, it’s an alternative to bars; a lot more people are seeking us out.” Best of can make friends all, Ken pointed out, “We’re all inclusive. and find people who We’re not here to judge or turn anybody like the same things. It’s all possible and away.” it can happen.” Jonny believes. “Let’s bring this to fruition.” Human kindness goes a long way and the bedrock of the foundation of Gays Do The group has a standing date to meet More Than Bars. at a dog park every Sunday at 10 a.m. Other activities include movie night, “I really like meeting people,” said Jonny. bowling at ChrisTown Lanes for $2 “People see how welcoming the group is. Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Fifty Shades Darker
Starring: Dakota Johnson, Jamie Dornan, Kim Basinger “Okay, fine. I’ll have dinner with you. Only because I’m ... hungry.” The wooden, onedimensional, downright plain co-ed Anastasia Steele (Johnson, The Social Network) is lured–yet once again–into the web of sado-masochistic, bondage and dominationfilled world of the filthy rich (yet remarkably boring) tycoon Christian Grey (Dornan, Marie Antoinette) in this sequel to the boring, critically panned (“This film raped my intelligence,” claimed one reviewer) 2015 stinker. Expect moody, dimly lit scenes, pregnant pauses, meaningful stares, sad expressions and lots of whispered erotic dialogue in addition to a shadowy, ghost-like vengeful woman from Grey’s dubious past. Teen Wolf dreamboat and former Arizona State University Sun Devil baseball infielder Tyler Hoechlin co-stars.
Disney’s Newsies: The Broadway Musical
Starring: Jeremy Jordan, Kara Lindsay, Andrew KeenanBolger
Disney Theatrical Productions in cooperation with Fathom Events brings the 2011 Tony award winning show (an adaptation of the 1992 motion picture) to the big screen in select theaters across the nation for three days only. The script was adapted from the original screenplay by Tony winner Harvey Fierstein (Hairspray! The Musical). Jack Kelly (Jordan, the CW Network’s Supergirl) leads fellow newsboys in a strike in this fictionalized, musical retelling of the reallife 1899 New York City newsboy strike. Throw in a love interest, backflips, kicks and jumps from a gang of chorus boys in knickerbockers and you’ve got a musical hit with a score by Disney’s genius composer Alan Mencken.
Dornan got an extra $1.5 million for the full-frontal screen debut of “Little Mr. Pink,” so that’s a bonus. Well, hopefully.
If you love the TV live presentations of Hairspray! The Musical, Peter Pan, The Sound of Music and Broadway shows in general, you won’t want to miss this. Special behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with the cast and creators will be incorporated into the film.

I See You
The xx To say 2009’s selftitled debut XX was an unlikely hit is an understatement. It was so unlikely that the UK band’s three members seemed completely startled by its success staging shows where they’d hide in the shadows before anxiously approaching the microphone. What the trio lacked in stage presence they made up for with a unique sound. Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sims’ haunting combination of voices, guitar and bass cleverly ride over the unique and sophisticated beats by DJ and producer Jamie. Where 2012’s followup Coexist felt like a rehashing of their debut, this is an album worthy of the band’s cult-like following. Jamie XX’s influence on I See You is undeniable after his own 2015 hit debut solo album and authoring hits for Drake and Rihanna. Where he previously seemed to provide the percussive backbone for two leads, his samples and nostalgic perspective are at this album’s forefront. Jamie’s genius sample of 80s duo Hall and Oates and 90’s house roller rink romp takes over with “On Hold.” This fantastic balance is found throughout with songs like “Dangerous” and “A Violent Noise.” “Say Something Loving” is the epic song that highlights the XX’s much needed and rewarding evolution. La La Land OST Various Artists La La Land stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling as
Aural Fixation
Angelenos longing to realize their dreams. In a more Disney approach, La La Land isn’t a traditional musical but songs are sprinkled throughout with montages between dialogue. “Another Day in the Sun” and “Someone in the Crowd” harken back to Hollywood’s Golden Age with its jazz rhythms and bass lines. “Mia and Sebastian’s Theme” is at the soundtrack’s core with its sweeping piano. Gosling and Stone’s vocals are at the forefront of “A Lovely Night” and “City of Stars.” Their singing is decent; Gosling talk-sings to hide his deficiencies where Stone plays coy making her amateur vocals charming. John Legend’s cameo finds a place with “Start a Fire,” a metaphoric title for the drama he’s a catalyst for in the film. Director Damien Chazelle and composer Justin Hurwitz created a clever gateway drug for a new generation to become addicted to classics like Singin’ in the Rain and Cabaret thanks to this. As the thoughtful host of National Geographic’s series, The Story of God with Morgan Freeman it’s a natural fit. Six episodes of season 1 feature Freeman visiting 20 cities in seven different countries, examining ancient and modern world cultures’ theories about the afterlife, the apocalypse, creation, evil, miracles, and questioning, “Who Is God?” Scholars, theologians and experts around the world talk about the divine with him. Discussions can get a bit weighty, but that’s God for you. Still, the mellifluous Freeman is a treat, providing food for thought for the metaphysical and philosophical. Does Freeman believe in God? “I think we invented God,” he said in 2012. “So if I believe in God–and I do–it’s because I think I’m God.” That’s comforting. Season 2 is now being broadcast on NatGeo. 2-discs available on NationalGeographic.com or on DVD $29.99 MSRP
The Red Skelton Hour in Color A huge comic movie and radio star of his day, (Watch the Birdie, 1950, it’s hysterical) comedian Red Skelton kept TV audiences in stitches for 20 years from 195171 with The Red Skelton Hour, winning a Golden Globe for “Best TV Show” in 1959. Red’s zany Sheriff Deadeye, Clem Kadiddlehopper and Freddie the Freeloader were staples characters. The Rolling Stones made their American TV debut here. Hollywood greats like John Wayne, Vincent Price, Mae West and Mickey Rooney guest starred with an enthusiastic Red. The 3-DVD collection features 12 never before released episodes of the variety show in color, not seen for 50 years. Although Vaudeville-like skits and jokes and gags are oddly quaint by today’s standards, it’s an interesting window into what tickled America’s funny-bone once upon a time, but the show will largely only appeal to the TV history enthusiasts. Your grandparents will love it! ★★☆☆☆
3-DVD, $29.95 MSRP, single disc $12.95. 11 & 22-DVD collections also available on Amazon. com and TimeLife.com

Award-winning with Texas critics as “Best Bowl of Red” it’s only $5 you can also make it a Frito Pie, honey!
fork-tender filets will have your tongue kicking out your teeth to get at it. Topped with a generous dollop of country gravy and only $15, nearly a million of these have been served. Honest! We ain’t tryin’ to bamboozle you here, neither! This old cowhand from the Rio Grande is mighty fond of the Southern Style Pork Chops. David Lawson 72
WWW.IONAZ.COM February 2017
ION: When did you first get involved with rodeo? David Lawson: I started showing horses and competing in 8th grade, so I’ve been a “horse person” for nearly 30 years. I attended my first gay rodeo in Kansas City, Missouri back in 2004, where I entered the Barrel Race and the Pole Bending. I was nervous as hell, and my boyfriend at the time–who was not a horse person–placed higher than I did that weekend.
wrestling from the bucking chute instead of out of the roping
ION: What’s your favorite rodeo event? DL: Pole Bending is my favorite individual event. I have a horse that truly loves it, and it’s extremely fun to pair up with Maverick for this event. Team Roping is my other favorite event. I get to compete with my best friend and rodeo partner, Greg Begay. Through rodeo we’ve become great friends, and getting to compete with someone who loves it as much as I do is a thrill. ION: Do people need to come from a rodeo background to participate? DL: Absolutely not. IGRA is the perfect place for absolutely anyone who is interested in rodeo to get his or her feet wet. We have many ways that newcomers can get involved. Volunteers are always welcome to help run the rodeos. Crew members can learn the “back of the house” aspects of rodeo production and what it takes to keep things moving. After gaining experience, there are more official positions that a newcomer might be interested in. As far as competition, we have events like Calf Roping On Foot and Goat Dressing for people who don’t have horses. If one chooses the rough stock events, we have Steer Riding as a lead-up to riding bulls, and Chute Dogging, which is steer
box on a horse. Additionally, there is a strong royalty program for people who dream of being a rodeo queen or king. ION: Why is gay rodeo important? DL: Gay rodeo is extremely close to my heart. I spend my entire life training horses, giving riding lessons, and attending competitions. Gay rodeo is important to me because it’s my chance to let my hair down and have fun with my gay peers while at the same time enjoying the sport of rodeo which I’m so passionate about. A lot of people don’t realize it, but IGRA and its sanctioned rodeo associations are major fundraisers for the gay community. Our rodeos and royalty programs have raised millions of dollars over the years for local, state and national charities. IGRA’s mission is to help rodeo associations who help their communities. ION: Tell us about your national title. February 2017 WWW.IONAZ.COM 73
DL: At the 2016 World Gay Rodeo Finals I was finally fortunate enough to win “All Around Cowboy”―a title that’s eluded me for years. I tied with Greg, my rodeo partner, one year but lost the tie breaker! Throughout the regular season, we all compete at various rodeos. We get points based on our placings. The first hurdle is to get qualified for finals in at least three of the four categories; rough stock, roping, speed events, and camp. Once qualified for finals, it all comes down to two days of competition where the top 20 in each event do their best to win. This year I was able to keep my head in the game, my eye on the prize, and I won the gold buckle! It was very special because my association, Golden State Gay Rodeo Association, took top honors in the team points, and I was the All Around Cowboy. I got to receive my award in front of my parents who were attending World Gay Rodeo

Finals for their second time. I’d also like to mention that Candi Pratt of Red River Rodeo Association won the All Around Cowgirl title as well. ION: What do you do when you’re not training for rodeo events? DL: This is a hard question for me to answer. When I’m not doing something related to IGRA rodeos, I’m working with students and horses at other rodeo related events. I train horses full-time and have around 20 horses to manage and ride at any given time. Most weekends I’m traveling to a competition of some kind. You might say I need to work on broadening my horizons, but I’m doing what I love, and my gypsy rodeo lifestyle is a lot of fun! ION: What’s something ION readers might not realize about rodeo as a sport?
DL: The sense of community and camaraderie that comes with rodeo is second to none. The amount of dedication and trust it takes to be successful in this sport is intense. I don’t think I’ve ever been to a gay rodeo where the words “my rodeo family” were not mentioned. A lot goes into any rodeo, but the heart and passion associated with IGRA rodeos is what keeps me coming back for more. For more information about gay rodeo check out IGRA.com

teaches rodeo school S addle up, pardner, because Arizona’s own Greg Begay, World Gay Ro-
deo’s All-Around Cowboy 2015, teaches Rodeo School Friday, February 17 from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. The AGRA Rodeo is always looking for new contestants, and Rodeo School is a great way to get involved even if you’re completely new to the rodeo events. Need suggestions? Try Calf Roping on Foot. Greg teaches this event as well as Chute Dogging and Steer Decorating. Calf Roping on Foot is an individual event that’s all about how fast you rope a calf on foot, where technique, flair and a lot of luck are needed. Whoever has the fastest time wins!
Let’s ‘rassle! The wrestling event of rodeo is Chute Dogging. It’s Man against steer! The faster you wrestle the steer 76

to the ground, the better. This is a timed event where muscle and heart can win you a buckle. Steer Decorating is a team even that gets real interesting real quick. Once the steer is released into the arena, one cowpoke holds the steer by a rope while the other scrambles to tie a ribbon to the beast’s tail. The rope holding the steer is immediately removed by the partner. The team races to tag the timer’s hand and stop the clock. Got what it takes? Give it a try! We’ll see you buckaroos bright and early at the Corona Ranch and Rodeo Grounds at 7611 S. 29th Ave. just south of Baseline Road in Laveen for Rodeo School with World Gay Rodeo All-Around Cowboy and champeen Greg Begay!

ANTHONY
LAWSON A
nthony Lawson was destined for the rodeo life. “My dad was a team roper. When I was four-years-old, he let me use his horse and I ran in a gymkhana—a horse racing competition. I did great and took off from there. Later I also joined and completed eight years of 4H.” Eventually Anthony decided to compete in open shows and compete in other rodeo circuits. It was only a matter of time until he became a star competitor in the AGRA circuit. “When I was 21 I went to Charlies and spoke with Ruben Contreras about the gay rodeo. The first year I watched and the following year I competed. Later I was introduced to Greg Begay and David Lawson, who’ve become great friends and mentors.” February 2017 WWW.IONAZ.COM 77

POLE BENDING The horse and rider compete for fastest time working a linear pattern through six poles, equally spaced 21 feet apart. A running start is allowed. Time penalties are assessed for knocking a pole down. CALF ROPING ON FOOT The contestant stands in the roping box; when the calf is released, he attempts to throw the loop over the calf’s head. Once the loop passes over the calf’s head, the contestant must pull up the rope’s slack.
STEER RIDING The rider must stay mounted on the steer using only a hand-held rope and his legs, wrapped around the animal. Riders spurring or moving legs back and forth on the animal’s sides, receive a higher score.
TEAM ROPING The team consists of two ropers (a “header” and a “heeler”) and two horses. The header catches the steer by the horns while the heeler must catch the steer’s back legs. Once this is accomplished, they must turn their horses to face the steer, pulling their ropes taut.
CHUTE DOGGING The steer and the contestant both start in the bucking chute , facing a 60-second time limit. When the chute gate opens, the contestant must bring the steer out to a 10-foot line and attempt to wrestle, or “dog” the steer to the ground.
BREAKAWAY ROPING The roper is mounted on horseback. When the calf is released from the chute, the roper will be in hot pursuit with his lasso. Once thrown, it must pass completely over the calf’s head. 80
WWW.IONAZ.COM February 2017
RANCH SADDLE BRONC RIDING The rider holds onto a soft rope, fastened to the horse’s head with a special halter. The rider uses only on free hand to hold onto the saddle while maintaining his position.
WILD DRAG An IGRA audience favorite with one male, one female, with one in “drag” (either male or female) and one wild steer. Once the gate opens, the team tries to direct the steer toward the finish line, then ride back with the “drag” mounted on the steer.
BULL RIDING The ultimate event of the rodeo! Once the chute opens, few riders ever leave the arena without being slammed to the ground, scurrying for cover as the Bull Fighter moves in to save the cowboy or cowgirl.
BARREL RACING Contestants vie for the fastest time in running a 3-point, cloverleaf pattern around three barrels with 5-second penalty assessed for knocking over a barrel. Contestants leaving the prescribed course are disqualified.
FLAG RACES A triangular pattern similar to the barrel race is used. The rider may pass the first barrel, pick up a flag, race past the pole, back to the second barrel, attempting to place the flag in the second bucket. If the rider knocks over the first bucket or the pole, a 5-second penalty is assessed. If the rider does not pick up the flag or misses the second bucket, no time will be given. If the second bucket or barrel are knocked over, the rider is disqualified. STEER DECORATING This event requires a two-person team. One holds the end of a 25 foot rope, looped around the steer’s horns. The other stands 40 feet away holding a ribbon. When the gate opens, one cowboy ties the ribbon on the steer’s tail while the other one removes the rope from the steer’s horns. Once completed, the ribbon-tier must tag the timer.
GOAT DRESSING This two-person event was created just for gay rodeo. The whistle sounds, the team runs to a tethered goat; one cowboy picks up the goat’s rear legs, the other grabs the underwear, pulling them up the goat’s hind end. Both team members race back to the start/finish line to stop timing. The underwear must stay over the goat’s backside until the timer is tagged by both members. February 2017 WWW.IONAZ.COM 81

“ h won’t you stay with me? ‘Cause you’re all I A need ...” And when weepy Brit Sam Smith starts bawling for you to stay with him, he’s serious. Really, really serious! When Kyle Padden recently B celebrated his birthday in West Hollywood, he sold a couple of kidneys and partied at The Abbey. (Hey, have every bought a drink at C The Abbey? I certainly can’t. Not on a Society Columnist’s salary.) Anyway, a rather tipsy Smith knows a good thing when he sees it, obviously, even if it ain’t love, it’s clear to see. Needless to say, however, D Kyle came back alone. Minus two vital organs, a wallet full of mad money, but with a great Celebrity Make-Out story. (A) If you’re still one missing out on the freaky-licious “We Three Queens” underground parties, you’re missing out on a funkload o’ fun! Not only was fab photog Micah James generously
offering up his latex teets with which he suckles the world, a thirsty, colorful (and totes adorabs) Austin Martin eagerly lapped away with a quick flick of his little pink tongue! “Tough titty,” said the kitty, “but the milk’s okay!” (B) Marshall Shore, the celebrated, cultivated, elevated, and highly promulgated Historian of Everything Queer & Dear in Arizona, canoodled shamelessly with the panty-less gay-sha Chance Gullon a.k.a “Madame Chiang Kai-Chic.” (C) And then there was this hot guy: (D) All I know is that he’s a barista somewhere in Old Town Scottsdale and his tattoo of runic writing on his taught, firm stomach says something about Voldemort. I think. Either that or he might be Rosemary’s Baby. Not sure. Paris, Milan, New York! On the runways of Plazma supermodel Celia Putty (E) tore up the catwalk with her Bicentennial knock-off of horsey Trump Whisperer-slash-campaign manager Kellyanne Conway’s inaugural outfit (F) she stole from the costume department of the Broadway smash Hamilton. Who wore it better? (Or is that possible?)
