It’s here. It’s queer. Get used to it. Y
ears ago when I was a kid, gay people marched and chanted: “We’re here. We’re queer. Get used to it!” As a child struggling with my own sexuality, I hated this message. I thought and still believe you can’t force your agenda on anyone whether it’s politics or sexual identity. You need to be patient, secure and have a consistent message to educate the uneducated.
I moved to Arizona to begin my new life. I delved into the LGBTQ community head first and never looked back. I decided to use my years of marketing and design experience to create a magazine to promote our state and lifestyle. While I was 100% gay (G), I quickly learned there is more than just gay men. First, women liked to be called lesbians (L). Second, while I first lied and told that I am “only” a bisexual, it is actually a reality for many people (B). Then I met a ton of wonderful people that did not identify with their sex at birth (T). Then I met others who prefer the term “queer” and others were still questioning their sexuality (Q), they are now part of our growing family. Hence, LGBTQ+ So here we are all together. Many agree we are at least 10% of the population. Sexuality, unlike people, doesn’t discriminate. Every religion, nationality, and mammal has a percentage of LGBTQ+. But as a minority, we actually have power to 26

change the world. Not only are we coming out and educating the ignorant, we are spending money. As a group, we spend more on dining, travel, transportation, electronics, housing and more. In fact, according to Bloomberg, a respectable news source, our spending power is estimated at almost $1 trillion dollars.
Which brings me to my third coming out story. First, it was to come out to my family and friends. Second, it was to come out to Phoenix and eventually the entire state through ION Arizona. Today, I am so proud to come out to the world. On October 10 we launch an app like no other. It will be available on every smart phone and every tablet in the world! This means that most people on the face of this amazing marble planet can have the entire Arizona LGBTQ+ in the palm of their hand. The power to explore this growing state that we call “home.” Let’s all come out together and show the world why Arizona is the place to live, work and play. So the new ION APP is here, it’s queer, get used to it. Better yet, download it by searching your mobile device’s app store and explore Arizona.

Reality TV celeb Antoni Porowski brings his talent to the AZCentral Wine + Food Experience.
ver since Netflix retooled Bravo’s classic reality TV show Queer Eye for the Straight Guy (2003-2007) for a new audience, calling it, simply, Queer Eye, viewers have been gobbling up everything the sizzling, saucy food and wine expert, Antoni Porowski, has to offer. Eater.com proclaimed Queer Eye’s TV snack as the “2018 Brand of the Year.” Watching him read his “Thirst Tweets” from fans are better than avotoast. He now has a new cookbook available, too. Antoni gives it to ION Arizona readers, well, as he says, “like so” in this exclusive interview. ION: You’re friends and were once the personal chef for the original Queer Eye food and wine representative, Chopped host Ted Allen. How did it feel stepping into that role? Antoni Porowski: I was his personal assistant, actually. While I did cook for him and his husband Barry, I had various responsibilities helping both of them with their business. It’s still quite unbelievable to imagine that I now have the job that gave Ted his own career. I wish I were clever enough to say it was all part of a master plan. ION: What was your favorite moment on Queer Eye? AP: Maybe the first day of filming season 1, when we were in Tom Jackson’s home. While I was nervous and wanted to do well, there was a
freedom in exploring his cupboards and asking him whatever came to mind. No one knew whether the show would become what it is today. We were all innocent to the future which awaited our lives and the show. ION: What’s the greatest takeaway you’d like for viewers to leave with after watching Queer Eye? AP: Remember to be kind to others. Waiters in restaurants, family members who drove you nuts and even people who at first don’t seem like they deserve it. It affects your well-being as much as it does theirs. ION: We know you’re crazy about avocados. Anything you really can’t stand? AP: I’m not, actually. While I do appreciate them, a lot of attention was brought to this fruit as the result of just two recipes shown on the show. I’m not a picky eater and will try anything twice, so I can’t really think of anything I cannot stand. ION: What’s your favorite “guilty pleasure” food porn dish that you’re secretly ashamed of eating (but not really)? AP: Any cheese on a non-stick pan until it gets crispy and then just eating it warm, right off the pan. ION: What’s the sexiest dish/meal anyone can make someone? (Besides having you serve it personally.) October 2019 WWW.IONAZ.COM 29
100 of your all-time favorite recipes. Was it hard to pick which ones to include? What was your criteria? AP: Pasta. Maybe it’s my love for the Lady and the Tramp and the iconic spaghetti and meatball scene, but pasta is just romantic as hell. ION: You used to work with vintage furniture in addition to being a chef. Here’s a Sophie’s Choice for you: a mint condition Saarinen tulip chair or, say, a fabulous Veal Prince Orloff?
AP: It was definitely a challenge. I tried to keep the ones that felt most personal and relevant to the rest of the book. I also must give credit to my incredible editor Rux Martin and co-author Mindy Fox. These women helped edit out all of the unnecessary, that is, my original wish to have five Mac and cheese recipes as well as usage of peas in literally anything.
AP: I refer to myself as a cook—not a chef. Orloff is the dream. Meat, mushrooms and cheese. As for chairs I’m more of an Afra and Tobia Scarpa or French Modern lover. ION: Your new book, Antoni in the Kitchen, features Watch Queer Eye streaming on Netflix. Find out more about the swoon-worthy cook at AntoniPorowski.com and follow him on Twitter @antoni

Voodoo vs. Virtue I
By: Deon Brown
f you believe in spooks, spirits and things that go bump in the night -- or even if you don’t -- just turn on your crystal ball or your favorite streaming service and listen to the thought provoking, often wickedly funny, Believer Skeptic Podcast with chatty hosts, Chris Chavez, the velvet-voiced “believer,” and Cody Wagner, the super-excitable “skeptic,” who proclaim their show as, “The podcast where two idiots discuss the paranormal ...” often with an LGBT kooky correlation. Now launching their third year sorting out fact from fiction, a new podcast
is released every other Monday. Each episode of their show reaches up to 4,000 listeners monthly. They’ve had listeners from 75 countries. “We have random listeners from places as far away as Kuwait and Lithuania,” Cody said. It’s not easy getting those kinds of numbers for a podcast. “Chris handles the marketing end of things, connecting with other podcasters for crosspromotion, especially via Twitter. He’s fearless when it comes to reaching out to others.” Chris is a huge podcast fan, intrigued by My Favorite Murder and Bizarre States. “I told Cody, ‘This
seems pretty easy!’ but it took three or four months to finally hit the ‘record’ button. But now—every week— we work it out.” “I didn’t believe in the paranormal,” Cody said. “Chris came up with the concept and he wouldn’t let it go. He coaxed me, saying, ‘I’ll explain the topic and you can debunk it.’ So it was pretty natural.” The Believer Skeptic show’s topics include: cults, UFO’s, speaking in tongues, döppelgangers, Sheepsquatch, reincarnation, the Wicker Man, mass hysteria, the Devil, La Llorona, chupacabras, body snatchers, voodoo, haunted forests, and just about everything you can imagine in the Twilight Zone and the beyond. Paranormal discussions are Chris and Cody’s priority but they don’t shy away from incorporating an LGBT angle. During Pride month they talked about Harvey Milk ghost sightings. Bizarre stuff, right? “We try to steer around the mainstream—the weirder the better!” Cody promises. Sometimes discussions backfire after recording. Cody admitted, “After we talked about the Candyman, I could hardly
look in a mirror for weeks.” On the podcast about the sinister slave’s spirit he confesses to scaring himself so badly that he’d have to turn on an episode of Friends and pull the covers over his head. One of the duo’s favorite episode is “My Friend Tulpa.” Not familiar with them? Remember Jan Brady’s friend George Glass on The Brady Bunch? He was a tulpa. Kinda. “Tulpas who seem like imaginary friends are cheesy, but tulpa’s might explain some of the bigger phenomena, like Bigfoot and Slenderman— by willing them into existence,” Chris said. Some of the stories are cultural classics. “La Llorona is one of those urban legends I’ve grown up with. It’s a lot like the ancient Greek tragedy of Medea,” Chris explained. These tales of the supernatural and downright weird have existed all over the world for centuries, changing shape here and there. Are you a believer? Or a skeptic? Look deep into the crystal ball with Chris and Cody to decide.

HALLOWEEN G
et ready for goblins and ghosts to usher in a few nightmares for the Halloween season, Hollywood style! A happy, horrifying family, two wicked witch, and brain-hungry living corpses should keep you happy.
The Addams Family Voiced by: Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Chloe Grace Moretz, Finn Wolfhard, Nick Kroll, “It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood, a beautiful day for a neighbor, would you be mine?” Sure. But what if your neighbors are the creepy, kooky, mysterious and spooky Addams Family? These groovy ghoulies pack up their home at 0001 Cemetery Lane, moving to New Jersey and into the 21st Century as they battle it out with slimy reality TV show host. This goofy goth animated feature includes an all-star voice cast (including Snoop Dogg!) just in time for Halloween.
you can’t cast a spell and murder them with, say, poisoned apples, sabotaged spinning wheels or a field of noxious poppies. Prince Phillip proposes to Aurora (Fanning). His nasty mother (Pfeiffer) plans to use the wedding for her own wicked needs in this Disney sequel. These bitchy mothers-inlaw wage a battle of the wands that Fairyland won’t forget. Lana Del Rey
Norman Fucking Rockwell A Lana Del Rey is always two things, a showcase of her haunting, Nancy Sinatra-style vocals and an almost Warholian commentary on everything quintessentially American. Her songs run the range of things like commercialism, excess, vanity and icons like Elvis, Dean and Monroe. So what better place to end up in our current state of culture than Norman Fucking Rockwell. With her fifth release Lana lets us know she’d been in on the formula all along and delivers what might be her most sophisticated album yet. Teaser singles “Venice Bitch,” “Mariners Apartment Complex?” “Fuck it I Love You” and “The Greatest” show off Del Rey’s growth and aptitude for songwriting. She manages to take the mall-reggae, adolescent feeling of Sublime’s “Doin’ Time” and converts it into her own dark love letter to California. Rockwell painted the propaganda of America, Del Rey is playing our culture’s iconography to make her point—it’s brilliant. Available Now
Charli XCX Charli
Watching an award show like the VMA’s, you quickly realize that pop stars aren’t in the pantheon of otherworldly talents, good looks and
charisma that they once were. In the undercurrent there’s Charli XCX—the Brit who’s bubbled to the surface with songs like “Fancy” with Iggy Azalea, and “I Love It” alongside the now forgotten Icona Pop. Now Charli creates her self-titled third studio album of collaborations with the best of indie pop music. “Blame it on Your Love” with Lizzo and “Gone” with Christine and the Queens, “1999” with Troye Sivan, all showcase Charli’s production sensibilities. Where her curatorial genius really strikes a chord is “Shake it” with Big Freedia, CupcakKe, and Brooke Candy, a posse cut that makes your car rattle. If you want to know where the party really is, it’s on this album. Available Now

Lipstick vs. Meatstick Cassandro el Exótico Nothing gives the Latino community’s identity of “machismo” a run for its dinero quite like the exótico luchadoro, the frou-frou wrestlers of the knock-down”drag”-out world of lucha libre. The sexually ambiguous exótico is campy; though not necessarily gay, but they often are, appropriating feather boas, glitter and sequins into their persona, defying culture that’s mucho macho. This 73-minute bio-documentary tells the the trailblazing tale of Saúl Armendáriz, the world famous, “out,” Liberace-like, kissing luchador who emerged from a world of drugs and alcohol in El Paso, Texas, to become a star luchador. Despite broken bones, eight concussions and lots of surgery, Cassandro still has moxie, optimism and unparalleled athleticism in the ring. Shot on 16-mm film using lots of heavy filters No matter how hard it is ... how tough it gets ... there’s always a bigger dick. with choppy editing, the doc suffers from being overly “art-y.” Nonetheless, you can’t help but falling in love with the fabulous Cassandro, Reina de los Luchadoro! All Male, All Nude: Johnson’s Hey, gay boys! Have we got a doc for you! Johnson’s in Wilton Manors, Florida, showcases the pulchritude of many a-blushing bud of ever blooming beauty anxious to make a few extra bucks. This documentary is a valentine, painting a rosy picture of schlong-slingin’. For example, Johnson’s gave a $5,000 for the city’s after-school programs. The, uhh, “talent” talks about what motivates them (money) and gives advice: “Don’t show your asshole on stage.” One emotional kid cries, “This business eats you up, swallows you, shits you out, and eats you up again. And you know what it you leaves you wanting? More.” What did we learn? Strippers are people, too. If you’d like to see some all-nude, male strippers with hearts of gold, look no further! Puerto Vallarta, Mexico offers beach weddings with picturesque sunsets
Marriott and Westin hotels welcome LGBTQ weddings 70
By Jerry Jones NEMA News Network
WWW.IONAZ.COM October 2019
P
uerto Vallarta (MX) - For many LGBTQ couples, a wedding in an exotic location or even one on the beach, was something they could dream about but never really afford. The staff at two sister hotels in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, want you to know that your wedding dreams can come true, and they are looking to work with you and your budget. The Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa and The Westin Resort and Spa Puerto Vallarta, sit about a mile apart from each other, and both have received LGBT certification by the Jalisco Tourism Secretariat and Talento Consultores; The Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa is also TAG Approved, and TMR Out Now certified. With the hotels operating under the Marriott International umbrella, they sit on beachfront property overlooking Banderas Bay and the Pacific, and each have ample space for just about any size wedding. Marriott International, has long been recognized as a leader in the hotel industry on topics of diversity and inclusion, regularly scoring a 100 on the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index. The company also offers education and sales training to its associates to give them greater insight into what their guests might expect. However, be warned that most of the American weddings performed at the hotels are symbolic in nature – the couples have gotten married before they left the USA. If you want a legal Mexican ceremony, the law requires that you be in the
country at least four days prior to your wedding, and there are several other steps that you must take. “Love is love has become our inspiration to coordinate wedding experience. We remember that this is not only the wedding day for the couple, it’s also the arrival of friends and family, setting up the right moments for networking and details that will long last memories of your special day” said. Areli Vega, wedding and special events manager, The Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort and Spa. “Our recently renovated resort offers amazing beachfront locations, it has become a preferred resort for Americans and Canadians. Some couples have have marked their first walk together on white horses, others prefer the butterfly release, and of course we can always make the vow pronunciation a special surprise for your love one.” Most of the weddings held at the hotels are done on the beach, and at sunset. Each hotel will only allow two weddings on the same day.

With wedding packages starting as low as $75 USD per person (no including food), each hotel has specialists who will work with LGBTQ couples to help make them feel comfortable and make lifetime memories. “We have a lot option to offer with our packages, or we can personalize their wedding to meet their own needs,” said Denisse Montes De Oca, wedding and special events manager, The Westin Resort and Spa Puerto Vallarta. “We love to work with couples. And their location in the USA is not a problem. We work through email, telephone and FaceTime right up until the wedding.” Planning for a wedding – especially one that is in a foreign country – can be a daunting experience. But, rest assured Montes De Oca said, the thousands of details will be expertly handled.

“Our certified wedding planners are trained to help,” she explained. “After completing demanding coursework, each Marriott Certified Wedding Planner is qualified to coordinate weddings of all types, including ethnic and military weddings. Relying on experience, training, tradition and oldfashioned intuition, Marriott Certified Wedding Planners can help you determine an overall vision for your wedding and help you execute each detail. That includes setting an event budget; deciding on a menu; arranging table settings; and finding florists, photographers, a band and other entertainment for the big day.” Montes De Oca said she is often asked “when is the best time of year to have my wedding” and she said that the hotels can make any time of the year work. “We have a huge annual pride celebration in Puerto Vallarta around Memorial Day,” She said. “That’s always a high interest time. But there are pros and cons to our different seasons. The summer months can be hotter and the later in the summer rain showers are typical. But both hotels are experienced and can make anything work to please the happy brides or grooms.”

Marlys Ross
September 10, 1942—September 22, 2019
In 1986 Marlys opened one of the longest running neighborhood gay bars, Marly’s Pub on Cave Creek Road in Phoenix. Marlys was one of the toughest women her friends ever had the pleasure of knowing, keeping wild asses in line—and believe me, she should have gotten an award for that! Marlys showed us that being gay did not mean hiding who we were. Her bar was a safe haven and a place where we all became a family. Rest in peace, Boss, and don’t drink all the Skyy before we get there! Submitted by Beth Benjamin

hen I think of that handsome softball stud, Bobby Garcia Veyna, I think of him just oozing with that animalistic sensuality that drives everybody wild. (A) And by “everybody” I mean “me.” You stay away. During a recent foray to San Diego Bobby traded in his jock strap for a bra strap! With a little lipstick and a drop of Chanel No. 5 behind each ear, he turned into a punk Scottish lassie from the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond with all that plaid! (B) Yasss, hunty! Show me the Loch Ness Monster!
Dean Cassidy celebrated his winsome fiancé Dietrich Smith’s 21st birthday at Stacy’s. (D) Yep. That dear, little lamb is just 21 tender years old! I could almost smell the baby powder in the air! So pure. So untainted. Fair and unbesmirched by the wicked ways of this world of lies, mendacity, and Grindr. Well, maybe Dietrich’s just a little tainted and a tiny bit besmirched, because that precious little White boy can twerk and booty-pop his caboose with the best of ‘em. Marilyn Monroe’s long lost granddaughter Dixie Avenue and Paige Dior helped him ring in his legal introduction to alcohol and natal anniversary. (E)

Taste the rainbow! Forget your Stevia and Aspartame, and saccharine. Nothing artificial here! Josh Rivers threw a 100% pure cane sugar-coated event for his super sweet beau James Stravato, Willy Wonkastyle in a minty-fresh, frosting-covered Candyland where just about everything was edible. It was a dentist’s dream come true, there 98

BS West brings the mostest bootylicious boys to the stage every Thursday night, thanks to the fabulous Mandi Boom-Boom. Dreamy Chris Gonzales joined in the fun, too. (F) Of course, he works there, too, so ... y’know, he’s always there. Believe it or not, Kiki Andrews made a surprise appearance attempting to get impregnated by super-delish ex-go-go boy, Ethan.

(G) Kiki, honey, we need to have a talk about how biology works. HOLLYWOOD-ish NEWS: Everyone is gabbing about the new movie, JUDY, the patron saint of the gays. It was okay. Here’s a side-by-side of Renée Zellweger’s wonky, busted up “Judy Face” (H) compared to the real-life Garland’s poor, 47-year-old, clockstopping mug near the end of her short life (I). Wow. Just ... wow. I can’t wait to see the “Judy” Funko Pop! doll creates.

Speaking of Funko Pop! figures, (destined to be the worthless Beanie Babies of tomorrow) they L just released “Bellatrix LeStrange” M in their newest “Harry Potter Collection.” (J) Now ... is it just me, or does this look suspiciously like the late, very dead Michael Jackson during the “Bad” years, complete with the tiny nose and white skin? (K) Spooky.
Is it live, or is it Memorex? Our darling Barbra Seville (L) she gives and gives and gives ... Well, apparently she done gave her Dynalon® synthetic hairs away, too. I had to do a double-take because it looks like 80s pop icon Cyndi Lauper popped one of Barbra’s wigs on her own dome at a recent show biz event. (M) Coming soon! Order can your very own wig from the “Barbra Seville’s Celebrity Wig Collection” coming to QVC!
I know you think this just like US Weekly’s “Stars! They’re Just Like Us!” column about the glitterati of TinselTown, but that would be plagiarism. And plagiarism is bad. Not to mention illegal. But if you change the wording just a teeny ... “Starz! K They’re Kind of Like Some of Us!” I can avoid getting sued. What’s this? Is it true?! Yes! Local fabulosity, talented, hunky designer non pareil Dusty Brinsmade, (N) was spotted checking out of the Town & Country Trader Joe’s buying a carton of ... seltzer water? It’s all about White N Claw these days, girl!

he planets have plans for us. Lots! The Full Moon on October 13 guides you toward spontaneity. Don’t be foolish by “over-preparing.” Your goal is in sight! ¶ The Sun enters Scorpio on October 23. Pluto, the planet of Magic and Power, gives you a clue: this is an excellent time for self-transformation. It’s a great time to be the person you want to be. And by that I don’t mean J-Lo. ¶ Mercury goes back into Retrograde in Scorpio mode October 31-November 20. This time it’s a real stinker. Lies and mendacity abound. You can expect the breaching moral and social codes. (That’s a polite way of saying “blowies in the Port-a-Potty at the BS West Halloween Block Party.”) You’ll discover crap you’ve forgotten or ignored just hoping it gets resolved. It won’t. Deal with it for once and for all. You’ll feel better. Promise. ARIES Mar. 21 - Apr. 20 Time to spark up the everyday with a little more energy. Professionally, that’s a good thing. Personally, you’re super-emotional. WAell, and you’re horny, too, but careful with the sexting stuff. It may haunt you later. TAURUS April. 21 - May 20 How do I put this gently? Things look lousy. Hold on, don’t jump to conclusions. Deal with stuff you’ve neglected and you’ll sail through easily. Look outside the box for fun. GEMINI May 21 - June 21 Invest in your own well-being. This doesn’t give you free reign to be a brat and act selfish, though. You develop a creative project because you’re extra-artistic. It’s a little wacky, but you’re kinda wacky. CANCER June 22 - July 22 Money this month will help you pay off debt after that financial pickle you got yourself into. (Oops! Was that a secret?) Eat quality fish and grains for better health. (Weird,I know, but, hey, that’s what the stars are saying. I’m just the messenger.) 100
