Fall Sports Are Back!
Too Bad I Suck at ALL Sports
A
ION JUST JACK
s the weather “cools” down, it’s time for our annual Fall Sports preview. My problem is, while I love sports, I was never good at them. And that is an understatement. But I tried most of them because of my love for jocks. This month celebrates both people: athletes and the ones that watch them. It started with swimming at 5-years-old. I was always in the lowest swimming group yet I loved swimmers. Next was baseball. My dad coached our little league team and he threw me in left field since mentally I was in left field. I couldn’t even throw a ball (my nickname was rubber arm) and definitely couldn’t hit a baseball. I prayed I would get hit by the pitch or walked so I can get to 1st base (now it’s a lot easier). But I loved my fellow baseball players. Then I said, “Let’s try bowling.” My ball loved the gutter so that’s out. OK, let’s try basketball. I tried out for the school team and didn’t sink a shot, yet the players were sexy. Let’s do track. So much work but I liked the shorts. Failed again. Last was volleyball. Love the game but once again I sucked at that too. The moral of my story is I thank God for talented, hard working, competitive and great players in our community. I am always amazed at how big sports leagues are in Phoenix. Were these players good when they were younger but closeted and now they can play free and in a welcoming league. Either way, there is no better time to join a team. There is something for everyone (except me). I promise to continue being a spectator and athletic supporter. Enjoy this issue, enjoy your community and join a team found in this issue. Check out the ION Arizona App for quick links. Go to JOIN A TEAM button. You will have fun and meet new people. I’ll be on the sidelines. Typical. Jack Tesorero Athletic Supporter

Bats, mitts, nets, gloves, pins, targets, and balls … lots and lots of balls. Whatever your “racquet” is, there’s a sport for you. ION gives you the rundown on LGBTQ inclusive sports leagues in the Valley and how you can join. Remember, it’s not about whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game. Although winning is definitely better. Trust us on that. 24

American Horror Stories Don’t miss this spooky spin-off featuring 16 selfcontained episodes from Hollywood Queenpin Ryan Murphy’s fright factory of terrifying tales directed by out lesbian Sarah Paulson starring gay boys from Murphy’s stable o’ stars including Matt Bomer, Assassination of Gianni Versace’s Cody Fern, Glee’s Kevin McHale, and honorary gays, Finn Wittrock plus Chad James Buchanan.
ION STREAMING
Pray Away Exodus International, founded in the 1970s by five members of an evangelical church, claimed gays could become straight if they would “pray the gay away.” The documentary follows the former leaders as they contend with the aftermath of their actions, along with a survivor, as they seek healing and acceptance after more than a decade of conversion therapy. Again, Tinseltown’s Power Gay, Ryan Murphy, is the executive producer.
Rūranji After skipping town a decade ago after his mother’s death, transgender activist Caz Davis returns to the remote, politically divided dairy community of Rūrangi, New Zealand, hoping to reconnect with his estranged father, and friends who haven’t heard from Caz since before he transitioned. Scrum Fun I
t looks like Stormy weather this fall. The Phoenix Storm Rugby Football Club has the advantage line. Mathew Navarez, has been part of the team for four years, and is the league’s president. “We’re very teamwork oriented. That’s the Storm, we’re a brotherhood,” said Navarez. “We’re all inclusive and welcoming. I never played sports before—it wasn’t part of my background—and here I am! I’m proud to be part of this.” Phoenix Storm is part to the International Gay Rugby Association with 20 teams worldwide numbering about 1,200 players. In October they be play in tournament in Colorado. They’ll also play in the International Gay Rugby Association’s Bingham Cup, in Ottawa in August of 2022. Navarez said, “Everyone plays an important role. One of the phrases we use while playing is, ‘With you.’ We might be covering someone in the field, or backing up someone and say, ‘With you.’ We’re always there for each other.” Player Erick Tanchez expanded on his experience with Phoenix Storm. “I like the community and the camaraderie. Being gay and sports sometimes don’t go together. This helps people come out of their shell.” You don’t have to be a Sherman tank to play. The small but mighty Diego Tolentino has been playing with the team for two years. “I play Rugby because it brings me challenges where my size as a little guy can do anything rugby related,” he said. As the only gay rugby team in town, the Phoenix Storm plays games with approximately eight other straight teams in town. “They’ve all been very welcoming. No matter what happens on the field, we celebrate together afterwards with some drinks, along with some cheers and chants we all do.”
Navarez said, “We’re registering new members who never played rugby before.” The Phoenix Storm is gearing up 21 team members. They’re looking for 30 members in the league. If you can’t play, you can still be part of the league as a “Storm Chaser,” and help with fundraisers, attend socials, and travel to games with the players. If you’re looking for a challenge, rugby is it! Phoenix Storm wants you! Touch practice is every Thursday at 6:30 p.m. and on Saturdays at 8 a.m. at Colter Park, 702 W. Colter St. in Phoenix. Storm Rugby Boot Camp is Saturday, September 11 from 7 a.m.-11 a.m. ION Arizona is a proud sponsor of Phoenix Storm. 42

hose wacky stars! Uranus turns retrograde on August 19 for about five months. Examine how you depend on others and create new methods to change this in ways that benefit you and others. ¶ The Full Moon on August 22 is fabulous, because generous Jupiter will be in tight conjunction with it, bringing abundance and happiness. Mercury is in a strong orbit and won’t be retrograde until September 26. Get rid of clutter and reorganize everything. Like, your entire life. It’ll be fun! The stars promise!

ARIES Mar. 21 - Apr. 20 So, Mercury and Mars are hanging out in a bar on August 22. Pretty soon the Sun drops in. Guess what a happens? A huge shift in energy. Expect radical change. No kidding. TAURUS April. 21 - May 20 Shake ups help you break out of a rut because of Mercury and Uranus. This is a good time to update your wardrobe. Seriously. That’s Venus talking. And everybody else. GEMINI May 21 - June 21 Venus enters the sign of Libra on August 16. Expect electricity when the stars sprinkle fairy dust. You can be a real heartbreaker, so watch out. Other people have feelings, too. Even Capricorns, poor things. CANCER June 22 - July 22 No thanks to Saturn you’re feeling financially pinched. You’ll have to figure out how to cover expenses until big, fat Jupiter comes to your rescue—again—on August 22. LEO July 23 - Aug. 22 The New Moon in Leo affects you more than any other sign. This means conquering! Everything! If it’s your birthday, harness this lunar energy and you’ll be shocked at how capable you really are. Shocked! We’re all shocked! 62

VIRGO Aug. 23 - Sep. 22 You get lots of information that’s intriguing and curious. Follow your intuition. Is it your Solar Return? Mars connects with Uranus, and you’ll be feeling experimental and free. Exactly how experimental are you feeling? LIBRA Sep. 23 - Oct. 22 Expect progress through friendships, networking, and sharing ideas with others. Since they think just like you, that helps. The Full Moon sparks your creativity, maybe a romance. Or not. It’s up to you. SCORPIO Oct. 23 - Nov.23 Mercury brings lots of energy to the table. It also makes you irritable and grumpy. Mars opposite Jupiter makes you overconfident, and that’s problematic. Try a little humility and gain points with those around you. SAGITTARIUS Nov. 23 - Dec. 23 You feel a surge of ambition on August 18 when Mercury and Mars give your career a boost. But you’ve got to help, too. The planets can’t do everything. The Full Moon means you’ll get some information that’ll blow your mind. CAPRICORN Dec. 23 - Jan. 20 You love beginnings. You love that fresh Downy feeling. What happens when the circus leaves? After the New Moon on August 8 you need to ask yourself, “What the heck is going on?” You’ll get answers. AQUARIUS Jan. 21 - Feb. 19 You’re brash and independent. Well, sure, sometimes you’re a jerk, too. But you can’t be all things to all people. The Mercury-Venus transit means set some boundaries by August 11. Your attention turns to the bigger picture. PISCES Feb. 20 - Mar. 20 Venus brings out all of your wiles and charms. Well, until August 15. After that we’re not sure what happens. Should we be scared? The Full Moon and Jupiter bring you treats galore.
