Happy New Year!
Build Back Better - Together We Move Forward
W
ION JUST JACK
hen I was a kid my mother used to say, “Idle hands are the Devil’s workshop.” My dad used to say, “Many hands make light work.” I never knew what either meant until I was older. Now I get it! This month we celebrated our first full year back since the pandemic started. Last year many of us were unemployed. It was the first time since I was 14 years old I was out of work. I hated it. I was bored. Unproductive. Sad. But last December we got the ION team back together to produce the new ION Arizona. We all pulled together to relaunch the new design, the new website and the ION Arizona app. Now I’m not idle and our many hands are having fun again creating the best magazine in the country. I’m happy! As we approach the new year, I always like to look back and look forward. I want to right any wrongs. Fix what’s broken. Start with a clean slate. Reset and restart. Appreciate all we have done and all we will do in the new year. The best is yet to come! So as we enter the holiday season and the New Year, I want you all to think about what you can do to make your world a better place. Make the world a better place. Help people that need help. Help people you don’t even know. Get out and support your community, donate to your favorite charity and volunteer. Enjoy this final issue of 2021 (and the first of 2022.) Check out all the exciting upcoming events and parties throughout the magazine. Check out the app, weekly e-mail blast and our social media for our upcoming Live Nation ticket giveaways. I love what I do, I love the many people that produce ION and I love the people that love what we do. That’s my happiness.

Sort Of In a day and age where everyone is staging their “best life” and either cis-gender, gay, trans, bi, polyamorous, or whatever, it’s important to realize that we are all real people. This sweet, touching dramedy focuses on non-binary Sabi Mehboob, a nanny, a Pakistani living in Toronto. Living an “authentic life” isn’t just about identity; it’s about receiving the love and support you need. Don’t miss this.

The B***h Who Stole Christmas In another attempt to take over the world, RuPaul employs a squadron of her show’s queens (no doubt for free since they’re probably under a contract) in a film about a fashion journalist on an assignment from her editor (RuPaul) who travels to a Christmasobsessed town to dig up a story. Could it be worse than AJ & The Queen? Probably so.
Under the Christmas Tree Lifetime … Tragedy television for women. (And gay men.) Check out their first lesbian holiday romance! Romantic sparks begin to fly thanks to an enchanted tree and some Christmas fairy dust from the town’s pâtissière extraordinaire as two gals take leaps of faith and fight for love—Christmas magic. Ricki Lake should make this all worthwhile. Also available on Amazon Prime and Hulu+ Live. December 19

Saint-Narcisse Twins: Two to kiss, two to hug, two to love. Wow.
Starring: Félix-Antoine Duval, Tania Kontoyanni, Alexandra Petrachuk, Andreas Apergis This indictment about our “selfieobsessed” culture from legendary rogue underground filmmaker Bruce LaBruce, Canada’s reigning “King of Kink,” (who was unabashedly queer before it was cool) follows Dominic, a young man with a fetish … for himself. Nothing turns him on more than his reflection, with much of his time spent taking Polaroid selfies. When his loving grandmother dies, he discovers a deep family secret: his lesbian mother didn’t die in childbirth and he has a twin brother, Daniel, raised in a remote monastery by a depraved priest, held captive against his will. This twisted, not-so-classic love affair set in Quebec in 1972, the film stars dreamy newcomer Félix-Antoine Duval as a pair of identical twins who were separated at birth and did not previously know of each other’s existence, but who fall in love and begin a “twincestuous” relationship with each other after being reunited. The power of destiny brings together the two beautiful, identical brothers, who, after being reunited with their mother Beatrice, are soon embroiled in a blasphemous web of sex, revenge and redemption. This fabulously bizarre film unites mythology, religion, self-obsession, and—what else?—sex in a kinky tale told in a way that only the freaky filmmaker Bruce LaBruce can tell it. Focusing on the afterglow of sexual liberation, Saint-Narcisse, nominated for a Queer Lion at the Venice Film Festival and the New Visions Award at Sitges, is a love letter to the psychosexual thrillers. Elegant visuals are combined with LaBruce’s notorious punk provocations in “a wild ride that’s enjoyable in all its B-movie glory while also titillating the intellect” (The Hollywood Reporter). Kitschy, queer, and LaBruce at his titillating best. After all who doesn’t love a little bit of scandalizing erotic perversion between twins with the Catholic church in the background, right? Bonus features include deleted scenes, and commentary by director Bruce LaBruce. If you love queer film and you haven’t seen his 1995 opus magnus Hustler White, well, I just don’t know what we’re gonna do with you. Find out more about him at BruceLaBruce.com For more information visit FilmMovement.com Available on DVD, digital (iTunes, Amazon and Vudu) DEC / JAN 2022

Window Coffeebar Their Joe is Your Jam
L
ooking for a hug in a mug to start your day? Sounds like you need some coffee, friend. Marcus Sanchez and Homero Medrano partnered up to create a place where a person can be a person. And personing is hard without caffeine, right? Life happens; coffee helps. All you gotta do is ask. Window Coffeebar is there for that. Marcus gained his barista skills at Starbucks during college. Homero was a familiar face at Charlie’s for 11 years. They combined their knowhow to bring something they both loved and opened Window Coffeebar at Hive Solutions in the Coronado neighborhood on May 1, 2021. Of every dollar spent at a locally owned business, about 70 cents stays in your neighborhood. Of every dollar spent at a national corporation, less than 40 cents stays local. Window uses locally sourced bread, coffee roaster, and pastries (try the Fruit Tarts from Süss Pastries.) “The coffee culture in Phoenix is strong,” Marcus noticed. “Coffee lovers make maps of coffee bars and houses everywhere. We’ve had people from out of state making a point to visit us.” Homero added, “We get a lot of support from our friends and people in the neighborhood.” He’s the man behind “Homero’s Increasingly Famous Avocado Toast,” using a chewy, rustic sourdough bread from local bakery Noble Bread for the raft, adding a rich, thick spread of avocado with olive oil, sea salt, black pepper, a kick of chili flakes and a hint of citrus. Window Coffeebar loves you a latté. Crowd pleasing signature drinks include Burnt Cream Latté—think crême brûlée in a cup. Aztec Mocha gets a south of the border kick with cayenne pepper and cinnamon. Lucky Charms Latté is topped with colorful marshmallows and magically delicious. Try the Chaga Latté, made with the Inonotus obliquus chaga mushroom; it may boost your immune system, lend mental clarity, help lower blood sugar and cholesterol, perk things up with anti-oxidants, and it also promotes world peace. (Okay, that DEC / JAN 2022

last part isn’t true. But you never know.) If java ain’t your jive, they offer hot and iced teas (try the prickly pear), fresh squeezed lemonade with lavender, or the chai. Giving back? Charity begins at home—and at Window Coffeebar, too. For the Holiday Season Mark, Homero and coffee loving patrons are helping those who are less fortunate. They’re collecting gloves, hats, clean socks, and lip balm for the needful clients of Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS. Collection boxes are in the yard. Homero said, “It’s different working for yourselves. We love it; we even come here on our days off.” Cheerful baristas Caleb, Sierra, and Soraya are happy to help with your caffeination needs, too. You’ll be amazed how you become an instant human by just adding coffee. If you’re a bitch before you have your coffee, try Window Coffeebar. If that doesn’t help, well, maybe you’re just a bitch anyway. But at least be a local caffeinated bitch. Window Coffeebar loves you anyway. “Welcome As You Are.” Just like their sign says. Window Coffeebar Located in the backyard of Hive Solutions, an artists’ collective, at 2222 N. 16th St. at Cypress St. in Phoenix. Open 7 days a week. he stars and planets don’t fool around. December 18 the Full Moon is in Gemini. Trust your instincts despite emotional confusion. ¶ Venus retrograde starts on December 19 and lasts until January 29, 2022. Examine your relationships with money and unresolved relationships. ¶ The Winter Solstice begins on December 21 at 8:58 MST here in Arizona. It’s a short day, but a long night, baby. Look for a perfect mixture of emotions and good cheer as the days lengthen. ¶ Lucky Jupiter brings expansion and growth, and re-enters Pisces on December 28, bringing a funky kind of mysticism and compassion to our lives, spirits, and hearts. It’s time for spiritual growth, less restriction, and a lot more focus as we head into 2022. Ask the Universe for something you want and deserve. But be judicious and ask wisely. We’ve included a few New Year’s Resolutions for you.
LEO July 23 - Aug. 22 The Sun is in Sagittarius and the urge to give (and receive) love is strong. Be generous with your feelings. Resolution: Pick out “Safe Words.” For everything. You’ll need ‘em. VIRGO Aug. 23 - Sep. 22 After the Winter Solstice many relationships go through a major overhaul. Beginning 2022 with Venus in retrograde brings a blessing in disguise. Resolution: Learn how to handle your own sass. LIBRA Sep. 23 - Oct. 22 You’re approaching a new chapter. Engage others, and voice opinions. After the Full Moon on December 18, it’ll all make sense. Resolution: Speak your mind. But not too much.
SCORPIO Oct. 23 - Nov.23 Look for a surge of financial prosperity. Mars is paving the way to the Full Moon so you spend a lot of that ARIES Mar. 21 - Apr. 20 money. Look for a personal or philosophical TAURUS April. 21 - May 20 Mercury encourages you to stop being passive-aggressive. Look for a facelift to your social status. Resolution: Avoid borrowing. Anything. Especially money. And sex toys because, ewww. Even Venus says that’s icky. GEMINI May 21 - June 21 You’ll see a shift with a competitor. Maybe in business, or maybe in your personal life, and in whose favor? Strike a new deal! Resolution: Tackle that “To Do” list. CANCER June 22 - July 22 Courageous adventures await, but here’s the thing: not with anyone in your family, that’s for sure. None of them. Resolution: Don’t be so, well, “crabby.” Get a grip on something. But on what? 62

transformation, thanks to Mars. Is it your birthday? Resolution: Don’t drag certain people or problems into the new year.
CAPRICORN Dec. 23 - Jan. 20 Venus retrograde helps you fix crappy relationships. Is it your birthday? Push back from the past and discover a truth. Resolution: Make a vision board for your mental health in 2022. AQUARIUS Jan. 21 - Feb. 19 Saturn and Uranus duke it out; tradition versus change. Just remember that conflict isn’t abuse. Resolution: Expose yourself. To new ideas, that is. PISCES Feb. 20 - Mar. 20 Look for relationships with star power. See those red flags? Pay attention! Jupiter guarantees a good time. Resolution: Say, “Yes.” Bring a condom and $20 cash just in case.
