The ION Arizona Fleet: ION Aztek and the new ION RV Priscilla Queen of the Desert
ION PRISCILLA
hen I was a young boy, my favorite means of transportation was a toy Tonka Winnebago motor home. I would ride it down my driveway with my Ken and GI Joe dolls inside. Sorry Barbie. After I got my first skateboard and traveled throughout our neighborhood. Then I got my first bike and traveled even further. At 15 I bought my first moped and went even further. On my 16th birthday, I received my drivers license and bought a car and went even further. You see where this is going? What goes around comes around Introducing the new ION Arizona Winnebago RV! This vehicle was purchased from my good friend and supporter of our community for decades, Scott Kohler, owner of Fast Signs on Central. Not only did he give us a great deal, he included a full wrap and storage. Thank you, Scott! The ION RV premiered at the Pride Run hosted by the Phoenix Front Runners. Next, it was off to the Cactus Cities Chili Cook-off and Salsa Challenge at Charlie’s. My goal is to have the RV at most events, parades, bar crawls and fundraisers throughout the state. The road’s the limit. This issue is our annual “Pets in the City” featuring furry models and their owners; because of their generous donations, they each received a professional portrait from The Real McCoy Photography, helping raise money for the non-profit Joshua Tree Pet Feeding Program. We raised $1000. Thank you! This issue will be distributed at the ION booth at Rainbows Festival April 30-May 1. Bring your dog to the ION booth for a free photo! What’s next for your travels? Hope to see you all out and about on your next excellent Arizona adventure. Make sure you send us your traveling photos to IONarizona@me,com for our “Explore Arizona” issue this summer. Enjoy this issue, your pets and all this community has to offer! Jack M. Tesorero Captain Just Jack 20

Joshua Tree Pet Assistance Project ION “Pets in the City” beneficiary
I
ON Arizona and everyone who participated in our annual “Pets in the City” feature helped raise funds for Joshua Tree Pet Assistance Project with their professional portraits in this issue by Jason McCoy and The Real McCoy Photography. For over ten years this has been our beneficiary. Thanks to our readers and their pets, we are proud to make this contribution again this year. The goal of Joshua Tree Feeding Program is to provide nourishment to low-income residents of Maricopa County with an HIV/AIDS diagnosis. This all volunteer organization provides balanced meals from their pantry as well as medical and community resources to encourage self-sustainability of their clients in a social, supportive and welcoming environment where they are respected. Joshua Tree Feeding Program’s outreach extends beyond people. Our pet friends are valuable members of our family, and our lives. No one should have to choose between feeding themselves or feeding their pets, or be unable to keep their pet healthy. Expanded services give assistance to their clients’ pets, providing food and supplies. This is important because we know that pets help maintain comfort and provide support for those to those with HIV/AIDS. Joshua Tree Pet Assistance Project keeps a supply of unopened cans, bags and/or boxes of food for cats and dogs. Silent film star Charlie Chaplin said, “He who feeds a hungry animal feeds his own soul.” Don’t we all need a little nourishment? You can make a donation with a single or monthly monetary contribution, non-perishable or bags of pet food, or with gift cards to pet stores (or human stores, too!) You can contact them (or if you need help) use the information below: Joshua Tree Feeding Program First Congregation United Church of Christ 214 E. Willetta St. Donation Hours Monday–Thursday: 9 a.m.–12 noon Distribution Hours Wednesday: 8:30 a.m.–12 noon, & 5:30PM – 7 p.m. JTFP.org Email: JoshuaTree@JTFP.org Phone: 602-264-0223

And just like that! We’ve gone to the dogs with our annual photo feature showcasing ION readers with their best friends. Pups ’n’ pooches! Purebreds and mutts, all dogs need homes. They help their people lead fuller lives, rewarding them with unconditional love and lots of laughs along the way with their silly antics. These portraits were taken in the middle of our city at Margaret T. Hance Park. Our photographer, Jason McCoy of The Real McCoy Photography who often donates his time to help rescue animals get the perfect headshot and find their furever home. You can reach him on Instagram at ItsJasonMcCoy for more about him & his photography. With our readers’ help we raised nearly $1,000 for Joshua Tree Pet Feeding Assistance Program this year. You can donate, too, by scanning the QR code provided. Arf! 30

White Hot: The Rise & Fall of Abercrombie & Fitch You couldn’t walk into a gay bar in the 90s without smelling the Abercrombie & Fitch signature scent “FIERCE.” Behind the scenes of the preppy popular mall moose logo store (where clerks never said, “Hello”), exclusion and discrimination ran rampant. This documentary examines the contrast behind the snooty brand’s unsavory practices and its allAmerican public image. April 19

Glen Spencer
Glen was involved in HIV & AIDS issues in Arizona since 2002 following his own AIDS diagnosis. He was a big part of Aunt Rita’s Foundation since 2007, becoming Executive Director of Aunt Rita’s in 2016. Glen was instrumental in working with the City of Phoenix to become an UNAIDS Fast Track City, generating community support for HIV prevention and treatment. We remember Glen Spencer as a bold, charismatic, and talented leader. Glen didn’t just help change the conversation of HIV in Arizona, he insisted that more conversations be had, and that work got done. Glen passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 19, with his loving husband Marc Allen by his side. Glen’s legacy has forever influenced the landscape of HIV/AIDS services in Arizona, and for that we are eternally grateful. From our feelings of loss, we can collectively cultivate a field of personal and community success in his honor. He always be in our hearts.

n April 12, there is a celestial rendezvous between Jupiter and Neptune in Pisces. This is the first time they canoodled there since 1856. They’re strong planets, and this is a once in a lifetime chance to make it happen … for who? You. Open doors. Take a step. It’s so worth it. It’s more beautiful than you realize. ¶ Pluto, the Darth Vader of the Underworld, goes retrograde in Capricorn on April 29. Don’t stress; it takes up nearly half of the year and shouldn’t impact your day-to-day life. (But you never know. Kidding!) Pause for some serious reflection and get rid of stuff you don’t need. Wait … keep that; you might need it. (That was a test. You don’t need it.) ARIES Mar. 21 - Apr. 20 Someone owes you money. It’s time for a shakedown and get your coin. Make threats. Birthday Rams can look forward to reconnecting with friends. Interesting news hits you like a bolt of lightning. How will you process it? (Relax, it’s okay!) TAURUS April. 21 - May 20 Expect some critical feedback and commentary that might not sit well, but it will benefit you. Birthday Bovines: the Sun enters Taurus and it’s your season! A cosmic re-set has you starting over. You are adored! Quirks and all. GEMINI May 21 - June 21 Expand your outreach and discover that you’re a born leader. You just might inspire the beginning of a new movement. A little one, but still … Free yourself from what’s holding you back. CANCER June 22 - July 22 You’ll be recognized for a notable achievement. If you had some help along the way be sure to share the credit. You discover loyalty from an obscure source. LEO July 23 - Aug. 22 Your work methods are unconventional, but you know what? 94

You get shit done. You are meticulous and thorough. Sometimes it’s a little annoying being so perfect, isn’t it? VIRGO Aug. 23 - Sep. 22 Today you will win a prize! (Okay, maybe not today, but soon.) This is a month where you will see improvements. The key to maintaining all this is discipline. (And you love discipline, right?) LIBRA Sep. 23 - Oct. 22 Follow your instincts and you won’t go wrong. Well, hopefully. Be sure to use some common sense. Embrace the moment and a secret will be revealed about … who? You. That’s who. SCORPIO Oct. 23 - Nov.23 It’s time to switch things up in your daily routine, your beauty regimen, and lifestyle patterns. It’s a refreshing change. This creates a new curve for you. We like it. SAGITTARIUS Nov. 23 - Dec. 23 There’s some rumors circulating. About you. Some of them are delicious. Swear they’re true. Especially if they’re scandalous. Avoid temptation. That’s the hard part. CAPRICORN Dec. 23 - Jan. 20 Hey, this isn’t the path you thought you were on. Okay. Look at your surroundings. Ask yourself the right questions. Remember where you want to go? You have that key. Go. Now. Hurry! AQUARIUS Jan. 21 - Feb. 19 Conversations are born, and speed up, either via phone, text, email or in person. They will all connect you to others in a significant way. Word of advice: don’t cuss so much. Keep it classy. PISCES Feb. 20 - Mar. 20 Cowabunga! Surf the cosmic wave, dude! A newfound confidence has you riding the crest to the shore of a selfrealization that’s pretty trippy-outtie. Like, totally for sure!
