Happy Pride Month!

Celebrating 21 Years of Pride

P

ION JUST JACK

icture it … Sicily … 2001… No, wait. Phoenix. On July 1 we premiered IONAZ. 48 pages, black and white with Matt Woods on the glossy color cover. Chris Smith was my superstar salesman and Michael Keele was our talented photographer. Abercrombie & Fitch catalog and XY Magazine were hot. AOL was king and nobody had high speed internet let alone smart phones. Fast forward (on your VCR) 21 years, ION Arizona is a survivor. Now Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube are our competitors. We not only survived 21 years, three recessions and a pandemic, we are thriving. And now, we’re more than a magazine. We have our weekly email blast, social media contests and our killer app. I’m so proud of how far we’ve come! I’m also proud of how our community has embraced and supported us and I’m especially proud of my creative dream team our brilliant editor for 15 years Deon Brown and our super talented creative director Alex Campos. As we celebrate Pride Month, ask yourself what can you do to make our community better: Support our LGBTQ+ businesses, organizations, nonprofits, events. Many of these organizations are inside every issue of ION. We grew up with many of these organizations like Phoenix Pride, Aunt Rita’s, one•n•ten, Ripple Phoenix, and more. Most importantly, be true to yourself. Enjoy this special Pride Month issue featuring an exclusive interview with the hot, handsome and hilarious social media “weblebrity” Rob Anderson, who will be performing on July 13 at CB Live, and Dr. Eric Cervini, the creator and producer of the limited series The Book of Queer on Discovery+. History was never so much fun! Now, let’s all make some history together! Jack M. Tesorero Proud Gay Arizonan 20

George Michael Older re-release

O

riginally released in the UK on May 13, 1996 through Virgin Records, Older, George Michael’s iconic album, reached the pinnacle of chart success, where it remained for three consecutive weeks, The album was a huge global commercial success, going platinum six times in the UK, as well as verified platinum in another 22 countries— an achievement which is unparalleled to this day. Older was George’s third album as a solo artist. Dedicating three years to the recording, the album found him exploring new musical territories in a more serious way compared to his previous work. Particularly notable was the jazz flavor of the album’s sound. The album marked a departure from the synthesized production of his previous projects, delivering a more organic sound with the inclusion of brass and strings. Michael complemented this departure making a dramatic change of his clothes, hair style and overall appearance. ”The way my image changed in Europe was that I looked very different, I had very short hair—I had really a kind of gay look, in a way. I think I was trying to tell people I was okay with it [being gay], I just really didn’t want to share it with journalists. To my fans and the people that were really listening, I felt like I was trying to come out with them,” he said. Older tells the story of an extraordinary period in the life of the man who wrote, recorded and produced it as he journeyed through one of the most turbulent periods of his professional and personal life. “I think I composed the best, most healing piece of music that I’ve written in my life with this album. Older is my greatest moment,” Michael said. Older will be released on July 8, 2022 This stunning deluxe set features Older on double 180g vinyl remastered from original tapes plus Upper, available on vinyl for the first time. It also includes 5 CDs, three x 12”x12” art prints and a 12”x12” 48-page book The Story of Older with contributions from key people who helped make the album, plus rare and previously unseen photos. explains stuff.

heartthrobanderson ION: Oh, this is very exciting! I’ve wanted to speak with you for so long! I’m sorry to “fangirl” and gush, but I don’t care! Rob Anderson: No, I don’t hate it. So … (laughs) ION: Okay! Now, I can’t help but notice that in a lot of your publicity shots and TikToks and stuff that you polish your toenails. What color is your nail polish today? RA: Right now it is an aqua, but, unfortunately, I damage them so much from having gel on them that it’s split down the middle on one of my toes. So I have to wait for it to grow out until I have a new set. So it’s half aqua and then half nothing. They’re looking real bad right now, actually. ION: Do you get a high response from fans of the foot fetish community? RA: I don’t post a lot of my feet, I don’t think, [He does, really. We checked.—Ed.] so, I don’t know if I’ve given them an opportunity. I don’t think I push my feet a lot, actually. Maybe you’re a foot person, so you’re extra attentive to it. [We are. Really.—Ed.] ION: As a child, you had a huge collection of Beanie Babies.

RA: I have all of them. I don’t know if they’ll make a comeback. I hope so—that could be some good money! I was thinking of taking my childhood toys and making something out of them, like a harness made from Beanie Babies or something that’s a little more fun. Like mixing some of these things with kink, I thought it could be a fun photo shoot, but then I’d have to cut up the Beanie Babies, so TBD. JUN / JUL 2022

ION: We’ve seen the fabled Alaskan kingsize bed of yours. How many people can you fit on your bed? RA: I’ve had nine people on the bed to play Jackbox games. I think it could fit 12 if everyone was friends, if everyone was comfortable with each other, using each other’s laps as pillows and all of that. So I’d say eight to 12.

Rob Anderson’s Pedicure

ION: Let’s talk about your new single, Nothing For You. Is this a musical mating call for bottoms or the Song of the Summer, or both?

RA: I think it could be both and even more. I wanted to take kink or something that is part of the gay community and kind of push it to the max and make it stupid, and then celebrate that as a queer anthem. It’s just having fun with a message and almost a joke that is very specifically gay within our community. A lot of straight people would hear this song and be very confused why this would be a gay anthem. They wouldn’t understand it, but a lot of gay people would. That’s the kind of song I wanted to make. The reception has been fantastic, especially on YouTube, where the comedy songs are more prevalent; people really understood the joke of it all. Instagram’s been generally positive. On TikTok, they take it very seriously. Comedy and music isn’t something that are typically combined, so when people see a song or they see a music video, they immediately think it’s serious—this, clearly, is not. I don’t know how I can make it any more obvious, but it really is a joke, but they’re, like, “Oh, I can’t believe you’re trying to be a pop star,” but they aren’t kidding. They really do think Rob Anderson’s Alaskan King Size Bed that’s what’s trying to happen. So for those types of people, I kind of enjoy it a little. I like that some people miss the joke. It’s kind of a little embarrassing for them, don’t you think? ION: I agree. How long did it take you to film the video? RA: The planning took about a month beforehand. I knew what I wanted to do, which included some original props, like the Bill of My Rights that I rip up, the Ouija board that says “I’m just a hole.” I designed and ordered those things, got my looks together, worked with Asad Yuko, the director, and we got the choreographer, the dancers, we found the location and then we shot it all in one very long day. But it was very fun to see it all come to life. ION: Are we going to see more music videos from you? RA: Totally. I have a lot of original music in that show that sounds similar to that kind of very stupid concept applied to good music with a good hook and a good melody. I will probably release an EP with those songs as a five- or six-song little EP. 34

JUN / JUL 2022

ION: It’s June. What is the best way to celebrate Pride this month—the Rob Anderson way? Rob Anderson: You learn a lot when you go and you visit another city’s Pride weekend. When I lived in Chicago I would only go to my own Pride and I really liked it. When I started to visit other cities Prides, other countries’ Prides, it was just a very cool way to see how other people in cities celebrate it. If you haven’t done that, this could be a good month to kind of break out and check out another Pride. I really recommend it. ION: We’re curious, is there a “Mr. Rob Anderson” out there? RA: Me! ION: Well, I mean, like, as in a partner? RA: (Laughs) Oh no, wouldn’t that be funny though, if I was dating someone and I made people refer to them as “Mr. Rob Anderson”? Like they didn’t have their own identity at all! (laughs) I’d get their name changed legally. They’re only known as my “other.” That would be really funny! Anyway, I don’t, I’m single, and I very much enjoy it. I do miss companionship. But I’m very focused right now on making the best content that I can, trying new things. And I need to kind of not have another thing to manage, I guess—I don’t mean to say “manage,” but I haven’t been looking. I haven’t been open to meeting new people in that way because I kind of like where my life is right now. ION: You’re getting more famous. You’re a very attractive man. Are there a lot of star fuckers out there? RA: I think that sometimes, well, if I were in a space, like just a regular straight bar or some public space, the chances of being recognized are very slim. It’s only exclusively in gay spaces that I’m recognized, which is so cool to me … the way that the things I make really resonate with gay people—but no straight people know who I am. It’s cool. It’s almost like when RuPaul’s Drag Race first started and it was exclusively a gay thing. So I really, I really love that that’s the case. People are very nice to me. They’re very kind in a way where they’ll say, like, “Oh my God, that one video with the boyfriend twins, I watched it a few times and I noticed that you hid a little thing in there …” which was a joke referring to another video. So they’ll notice little specific things. They watch my content and enjoy my humor. Those are the sorts of compliments and comments I get, which I love. And I’m always open to when someone says, Hey, I’ll always stop and talk to them. So I don’t know if it’s much, I don’t know if people give me any kind of “starfucker” attitude. They just really like the things I make. So, I would say, no, I just get a lot of really nice comments.

ION: Now, you’re bringing your show here to Phoenix. RA: Yes. It’ll be the last of a few dates where I’m trying out new material, seeing how people like it before it goes on tour in the fall. The show is a mix of, music, original songs, some sketch, and personal stories that I haven’t really talked about on the internet. They’re probably not appropriate for the social networks. These really more explicit stories that I have a lot of fun telling that I wanted to tell in a more intimate comedy space environment. And I’m so excited to meet everybody and be able to tell these stories. ION: All of your video content is just you. I know you have a theatrical background, but is it hard putting on a one man show on stage? RA: Right. When I had my first show I definitely had some nerves beforehand—more than I typically would have if I was doing improv, which I have a lot of experience in. This is very reliant on me knowing my material very well and being able to execute all of it. But it went really well. I’m very hard on myself, and I challenged myself in a lot of ways and I was very happy with how the audience loved it. It is a little intimidating, like, “How are people going to respond to this?” But after that, I feel really good. ION: You’re also appearing in The Book of Queer on Discovery+. Creator/producer Eric Cervini (see interview in this issue) was impressed by your improv skills during filming. RA: He was so nice to give me an opportunity to be in that show. He’s so smart and so fun. I watched the first episode that’s out and I love that it is really informative. I think people are really going to get a kick out of the episode I’m in. I improvised the whole thing. I was just going off the cuff and everyone loved it. ION: We can’t wait to see your show in Phoenix. Thank you for your time! It’s been a pleasure! RA: You’re so welcome. I’m so happy to give the interview.

Cheers for

ueers Q ! Dr. Eric Cervini creates a Hall of Flamers with The Book of Queer for Discovery+

ION: Your new Discovery+ series The Book of Queer combines world history, a little bit of vaudeville, plus a splash of MGM musical extravaganzas, telling the stories of great LGBTQ figures. Did it turn out how you envisioned it? Eric Cervini: Oh, did it! It turned out so much better than I could have possibly imagined. I think as a writer, as a historian, we’re used to working by ourselves. For my last book (The Deviant’s War: The Homosexual vs. the United States), it took me eight years and that was, a relatively solitary task. In contrast with this show, it’s the largest, all queer cast in the history of television. We’re working with 12 queer writers, 18 queer historians, and then around 30 actors and comedians to bring it to life. And it was just the most humbling, beautiful experience of my life to work with so many folks who are infinitely talented than me, whether it was our set designer or our costumer or other writers, to take the stories that I was familiar with as a historian, but to turn it into art, to turn it into comedy, into music. That is just something that I’ll never forget. It was truly the honor of a lifetime. ION: Was it difficult to narrow down the “stars of queer history” to fit the needs of the series? EC: By far the hardest part of the entire process was figuring out of the hundreds, thousands, likely millions of queer stories that are out there from millennia of history, what are the 15 that we’re going to choose? We decided to go for depth instead of breadth. We didn’t want to give a five hour long global history, so we tried to find a diverse array of stories. I’ll admit it’s mostly for an American audience—since that’s most Discovery+ viewers are—but we were also certain to include those in ancient Egypt, Europe, and all over the place. So we try to make sure we have that diversity of geography as well. ION: You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have the facts of life. Of all the people in the series, who would you say has the greatest moral fiber and character, and who is the most despicable? You pretty much picked out heroes. King James is a little on the iffy side. EC: I’ll say one of my favorite queer hero versus villain pairings from American history is that Bayard Rustin and J. Edgar Hoover. You cannot have a more stark contrast between moral fiber on one hand, and moral depravity on the other. You have Rustin who brought non-violence to Dr. King in Montgomery and essentially turned the Black Freedom Movement into a more Gandhian, pacifist movement and the chief architect JUN / JUL 2022

of the 1963 March on Washington. Then you have someone who is rumored to have been a queer himself, but spent his entire life blackmailing queer federal employees, security clearance holders, even elected officials to increase his own power and ruined countless lives in the process. Both of those are included in this very first episode. ION: Nobody’s either all good or all bad. It’d be interesting to include more queer villains. I mean, Roy Cohn, a tremendous villain and very interesting, if problematic, individual. EC: I’m hoping in future seasons to do a queer villains episode; I think that would be so fun and I could not agree more. I think we could always tell more of those stories because they haven’t gotten their fair share. ION: Do you think that we’ll see the day when queer studies will be taught in public schools? And should history’s greatest have their sexual preferences and proclivities highlighted? EC: I think queer history is American history. Queer history is world history. We have the dual task of ensuring that we’re included in the surveys of American History and World History, that Stonewall has its own subsection or even just paragraphs. We need to at least be including ourselves in the larger story of American history. On the other hand, I think of having specialized queer history courses, certainly at the collegiate level. These courses are crucial and I wouldn’t be surprised if demand is skyrocketing. You talk to professors who are teaching these survey courses, If you ask them, what is the enrollment? Through the roof. There is so much demand, especially among Generation Z for understanding our past, because they understand that we weren’t able to tell these stories for a very long time without risking our careers. Now because they recognize that it’s been hidden from them and from our entire community for too long, they want to go learn for themselves and hopefully create new knowledge, create new books, new docuseries in the future. ION: Will there be future seasons of more queers from history? EC: Stay tuned. I can’t say anything yet, but certainly keep an eye out and I think there will be lots of great news coming from the world of queer history. 48

IONARIZONA

JUN / JUL 2022

ION: From your research through the mists of time, who emerges as the most fabulous so far and who would’ve approved of this project the most, in your opinion? Eric: Oh, that’s hard. I think Gil Baker who created the rainbow flag, and was a contemporary and friend of Harvey Milk. He was a drag queen. He recognized the political and community building importance of a symbol, like the rainbow flag, and the importance of a diversity, a rainbow of experiences coming together to constitute the LGBTQ plus community. He did so through joy, through art, through camp, through humor, through music and through performance. I hope that he, and his predecessor, José Sarria, would approve. We tell both of their stories together with the help of Ms. Vanji, the drag queen. They understood that art is activism, is politics, is beauty. You cannot separate those things when it comes to telling queer stories. ION: If you could choose, say, five people from queer history, to join you at your own queer dinner party, who would you invite? EC: Oh, that’s really a good question. Well, I wrote my book and my dissertation on Frank Kameny and I never got to interview him, unfortunately, because he passed away before I even learned his name. So I think after spending eight years with his ghost, it would be wonderful to actually have a conversation with him. Bayard Rustin is a personal hero of mine. I think James Baldwin is another who I would love to have a conversation with. Oh my gosh, there are so many! I’d love to hear more of Sappho’s poetry, so much of it has been lost. It would be incredible. We’d have to have a translator there as well. I would love to have her maybe provide the entertainment. And then last, I think if I can have six, I think Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, I think having them at the table, having them tell their stories and getting them to just continue speaking to this moment. In U.S. history right now it’s a very dark time and I think they were so effective at not just fighting back, but at reminding us who we are as a community and what we need to do and what our obligations are to those with the least to lose. And I think it’s their voices that we really need to be amplifying today. ION: You’ve picked very contemporary people, mostly. EC: Yeah, I’m a modernist. I should say an Americanist. I’m a modern American historian. I have a passion, of course, for all of queer history, but I think it’s those folks in mid-century America that tickles my intellectual fancy the most. Lovestruck High: Season One Relive the horror of high school in this reality show. Single adults are thrown into in a recreated high school for a term of love, lust and drama. You’ve got the sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, wastoids, dweebies, dickheads, queen bees, (and queers) all competing to get laid and win Prom King & Queen. Narrated by trainwreck bicon Lindsay Lohan.

ION STREAMING

Kids in the Hall This bizarre, hilarious, meta sketch comedy series originally ran on TV from 1988 to 1995 with characters like the super gay, wickedly wise barfly, Buddy Cole (Scott Thompson). They’re back 27 years later with eight new episodes. A two-part documentary The Kids in the Hall: Comedy Punks also debuted on Prime Video.

Fire Island Noah (Joel Kim Booster) is, a “happily, defiantly single” gay man, determined to make this summer special and meet the man of his dreams at the legendary party island. Partly Booster’s own story, this Gaysian/Round Eye rom-com is also loosely based on Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, while addressing classism and racism.

The American Dream Collides with The Reality of Immigration

Arizona Theatre Company Stages how to make an American Son to Close Season A “model immigrant” and business mogul, Honduran born Mando’s cleaning empire is bracing for a downturn at the exact same moment when he must rein in his overprivileged American son, Orlando—who is living large on his dime. To teach him a lesson, he puts Orlando on the floor with the cleaning team, but in the wake of a gay-bashing, Orlando suddenly finds himself responsible for the fate of a treasured undocumented worker and the future of his father’s entire enterprise. What happens when the promise of the American Dream collides with the reality of immigration and family? A moving new play about the complexities of privilege, citizenship, sexual identity, plus social and legal status within a newly wealthy immigrant family in addition to the most complex relationship of all: family. Playwright Christopher Oscar Peña said, “I wrote this play because immigrants were sold the ideal of the American dream. But I look around and realize that racism and hatred are so deeply ingrained into the fabric of who we are that rapists sit in the highest seats of government, children are separated from their parents simply because they are brown, and Black kids get shot up on the street by those meant to protect them. This is what we’re supposed to be proud of? What a time to be an American.” A gifted storyteller, Peña was a writer on the Golden Globe nominated debut season of the CW show Jane the Virgin, and HBO’s Insecure, as well as the Starz show Sweetbitter. He is currently developing an original series for Netflix. how to make an American Son will have its world premiere in a co-production between Arizona Theatre Company and Rattlestick Playwrights Theatre in New York. He was recently named an Artistic Associate at Arizona Theatre Company, and a proud member of New Dramatists, named one of “The 1st Annual Future Broadway Power List” by Backstage. Don’t miss this play closing out Arizona Theatre Company’s season. Phoenix: June 30-July 17 Tucson: June 2-25 Herberger Theater Temple of Music and Art 222 E. Monroe St. 330 S.
