ION APP 4,000 Downloads Your Community in Your Pants 24/7
ION JUST JACK
A
s we celebrate ION Arizona’s 21st anniversary this month, we reached another milestone recently. Before the pandemic we spent almost two years developing a one of a kind app. This was a game changer. While we stopped publishing the magazine for 9 months in 2020, the app was alive and growing. In fact, we just hit 4,000 downloads with no end in site. Thank you to everyone who downloaded it and use it often to discover your Arizona LGBTQ+ community. To say summer in Phoenix is hot is an understatement of biblical proportions. Our very first cover 21 years ago was entitled “The Heat is On!” It seems like it keeps been getting hotter and hotter. It’s a perfect time to go to a bar, restaurant, see an exhibit, watch a drag show, enjoy theatre and take in a concert. Check out all of the upcoming events including War on the Catwalk, ATCs How to Make an American Son, the Frida Kahlo immersive experience, “One Night of Queen” at Chandler Center for the Arts and more! Another way to beat the heat is to join a social club like Phoenix Takeover featured in this months cover feature. Other groups highlighted in this issue are BLAEQ, ANDES and Fierce Friends. It’s a great way to meet new friends with similar interests. Next month we’re excited to feature all of the talented contestants for Dancing for one•n•ten coming Sunday, August 21. Enjoy this issue, stay safe and stay cool!

Takes Off!
“Darling, it wouldn’t be a party without you.” By Deon Brown
T
hree years ago a group of gay men looking for something to liven things up started a little club they called, “PhAGS” (Phoenix Association of Gay Socialites). They corralled their friends together for a few drinks together and some dancing now and then. Then their friends told friends. And they told their friends … They re-branded as “PHX Takeover” and they took off. They’re cerebrating one year of PHX Takeover Happy Hour. There’s no application process; it’s the second Friday of every month at various watering holes Valleywide, with no cover. Activities outside of the bars, dance parties with like “Scandal” at BS West, or “Rise” at Kobalt, or even a pop-up party at Boycott. Many of their themed events, like their recent Kaftan Crawl, raises money for charities. 100% of this event’s proceeds benefited Mulligan’s Manor. Founding fun-boy Bradley John Dial’s said his favorite part of the PHX Takeover is “Seeing everyone come together as a community, getting comfortable, and being themselves.” Because, as Madonna once sang (back when we still liked her), “Music makes the people come together.” “PHX Takeover is a group effort shared by seven people,” Bradley John pointed out. “We all do something.” It’s not all about drinking in a bar. Takeover kingpin Keith Effertz said, “We’re unique; we’ve done recreational things, too, like tubing down the Salt River; I like to focus on those events so that we can include more people. We keep our events going by trying out different things. We always welcome others to promote their own events on our social media, too.” “I like to look at the venue during a Takeover and see everyone in their element,” said Carlos Castañeda. “I see the joy, love and affection. It’s a kind of ‘brotherhood’—but we’re inclusive and we don’t exclude anybody. We have women friends and straight allies who are all welcome, too. I love seeing how the Phoenix community has evolved and expanded. It’s very special.” Keith Effertz emphasized simple, singular philosophy of PHX Takeover: “Our main focus is to bring people together.” (See? It all comes full circle. Just like Madonna sang, remember?) Find out more. Search for PHX Takeover on Facebook to join their group. #PHXtakeover 30

David Patterson searches for signs and symbolism through Tarot.
W
hat does the Future hold? Can the hidden be revealed? Is it possible to reach out to the infinite? Can the cloaked secrets of the Mystical reveal the power of the Divine? Ask David Patterson. He became interested in Tarot at 18-yearsold because he was drawn to the artwork and how people could intuitively talk by connecting to a divine force through Tarot. As a communications tool, Tarot readings can be used to focus, and it can prompt people to share. “Every reading is different every time; not just about what I see. How it applies to you is going to be different It helps people open up about other things,” Patterson said. Each reading begins with the Fool—it’s about the instincts at the beginning of a journey. Another idea about the Fool is the conundrum that he simply doesn’t know what he doesn’t know. Do you want to know? It’s not Ouija. It’s not voodoo, or Black Magic. David believes, “It gets harder as an adult to connect with strangers and people. Tarot is a conversation. It’s a moment we may not have had otherwise. It’s a nonprescriptive way to ask a question or share guidance.” Does Tarot represent anything unique for Queer people? “It doesn’t hold a lot of heteronormative ideas,” David believes. “Much of it is non-gender prescriptive; the queen may not necessarily represent a woman, but rather, a feminine energy.” There’s no hocus-pocus. “The spirit realm isn’t JUL / AUG 2022

something I’m tapping into. I try hard not to play into the ‘scary’ part of it as a medium. For me, Tarot is a tool for insight and looking into ourselves. Some people journal, I can tap into parts of myself that may not otherwise be present.” David reads the cards daily and based on feelings, current events, or emotions. “I use it to center myself for the day, it’s almost meditative. It’s been really helpful to focus on the present and clear the interfering ‘chatter’ out. Some people use it as divination or communication tool. It can be very emotional and spiritual,” he said. Wands, cups, coins, swords. “Tarot opens a conversation,” David said—and he’s a master of conversation and human intuition—with or without Tarot. “I get to share these moments with people the I otherwise couldn’t have.” Are you interested in a Tarot card reading for yourself, gathering, or party? Let the cards speak! David Patterson can help. Email him at NAUoldcrow@gmail.com Find him on Instagram @OldCrowGypsyBro See more of Kyle Shields’ photography @OMGheyKyle

Loot SNL alum Maya Rudolph stars as the megabillionaire, Molly Novak, whose life spins out of control after a divorce. She applies herself to work at her own charitable foundation with predictably zany results. Michaela Jaé Rodriguez (Pose) stars as the charity’s director and Joel Kim Booster (Fire Island) is Molly’s bitchy gay assistant who lend a hand.
Uncoupled Neil Patrick Harris stars as Michael, a happily married New Yorker whose 17-year marriage comes crashing down when his husband blindsides him by walking out the door. Michael suddenly finding himself as a single gay man in his mid-40s in this romantic comedy. (Frankly, getting dumped doesn’t sound romantic or funny to us.)

hat at topsy-turvy time! Mars, the planet of war, squares off against Pluto, the planet of destruction. It can be a little scary, so expect manipulative power plays but don’t pull any triggers that could create a WWIII kind of crisis. Ever onward! Keep your hands clean. ¶ The “wounded healer,” the comet Chiron, goes retrograde through December. This a good time to take a deep breath and resolve any trauma, Mama. ¶ The New Moon in Leo on July 28 brings some magical “bibbidy-bobbidyboo” fairy dust to your world. Time to manifest those goals, Cinderella!
ION HOMOSCOPES
ARIES Mar. 21 - Apr. 20 Take action about something that needs your attention. (No, it’s not in your pants or up your skirt!) Mindless, endless chatter is overruling your decision making. TAURUS April. 21 - May 20 Some days are all about mad, passionate lovemaking, thanks to Venus and Mars. Some are about doing the dishes. Stay home during the full Moon. You’ll be glad you did. GEMINI May 21 - June 21 Everything you attract is part of a plan. Both, good and bad. It’s all about maintaining “balance.” Even if you have to push a jerk out of your way. Do it when nobody’s watching. CANCER June 22 - July 22 This is the time to show off your sizzle. Birthday Crabs: Mercury passes you a cocktail and makes you the life of the party. The Full Moon turns you into a kinky, sexy bitch. And we love it! LEO July 23 - Aug. 22 The Sun enters Leo on July 22 and then get ready to shine your light on the world! Birthday kitties find lots of extra ambition. People look at you and say, “Whoa!” because you’re extra awesome. 70

VIRGO Aug. 23 - Sep. 22 You and your partner will go on a trip. If you don’t have a partner, well, sorry, but you’ll probably go grocery shopping at Food Cityt all alone and buy Budget Gourmet dinners. 10 for $10 So be optimistic! LIBRA Sep. 23 - Oct. 22 This is a great jumping off point for something. Not a cliff, however. You face conflict and confrontation. You hate that. This time you can do it silently and slowly. Sneaky, right? SCORPIO Oct. 23 - Nov.23 It’s all about taking action and and the first step is initiative. New information is brought to light when Mars and Pluto square off on the 18th & 19th. SAGITTARIUS Nov. 23 - Dec. 23 You are “woke” and you get more “woke.” You’re so “woke” you need some rest. Do something that brings you joy. That doesn’t mean Marie Kondo style housecleaning. CAPRICORN Dec. 23 - Jan. 20 Scheduling and organization is challenging, but not out of control. People are noticing your contributions. Time to grab the spotlight! Don’t share it with anyone. Screw them! AQUARIUS Jan. 21 - Feb. 19 You feel motivated to complete pending tasks. That’s kind of a laugh since you often cherrypick what you like to do. It sure ain’t housework. A trip out of town de-rails that, thank God. PISCES Feb. 20 - Mar. 20 This is a good time to kick bad habits. While you’re out there kicking, I know a few people who need kicked in the ass. Feeling pressured? It’s okay to ask for help. I’m happy to help with the kicking.
